brigand chieftain. It hsH Income a serious degradation for any civili/.ed princess to marry a member of the Run ian house.Row sad the account of the enforced parading of a Protestant princess, wife of the Grand Duke .Sergius, as a victim at the altar of a Greek Catholic cathedral.\u2019This lady, whose conscience evidently forbids the act, was before all the people much agitated at thus being required to bow iu the house of Rimmoo.Heartless treatment of a wife is, however, not the greatest cause why an hoeest woman should recoil from union with a family in whose veins arc the lees of the worst blood in tbe world, and whose sway la extended by systematic treachery, not shrinking from kidnapping and assassination. The Nestorian Curium, according tr* a Frenchified ecclesiastic, who has gone as an envoy to the l'»pe, desires union with the Roman Catholics, not having found satisfaC' tion in Protestantism or with the Greek THE REASON WHY.That the happiness of life docs not de-perd on outward circumstances, is an old and olt told lesson of tho Christian pulpit and finds an equal place in tbe religious teaching of all lands.Except in so far as outward circumstances aflect health or intercourse they can hardly be counted a factor of happiness.Contentment is dependent on conditions of the soul, for which the individual is personally responsible.Faith, hope and love are the three enemies of unhappiness and are ready at the service of every one.A man who is discontented because otlura are better ofl than himself must he discontented always.Dis content with one's owu attainment is a good thing. There would be no progress if men were satisfied to remain as they arc.Envy of the advantages of others, on the other hand, is the cause of much unhappiness, and begets no good. Those who find their lot in life a hard one are to be honored when they exercise those virtues which will almost certainly lift them into a better.Such men are progressive and may, therefore, ho happy, as progress is one of the conditions of happiness. No selfish effort, however, can ever bring real happiness, as God has so willed it that wo can only be really happy in the service of others. Those who live unselfish lives are not only contented and happy but are more likely than any others to improve in all that in outward cir ciiinstances goes to make life larger and more enjoyable. Those, on the other hand, who waste their feelings in complaining about the better lot of others, which they often very wrongly imagine to he attained at their expense, are necessarily unhappy. To some people, any man s good fortune ia a source of misery.Such people naturally join the 'jodslists and not only make themselves and their associates miserable, but discredit and retard whatever of good and true there may be in the movement. It was probably thia sort of .Socialists who mohlted Mr.Stanley at Shellield on Friday night.IheShetbeld operatives, though earning large wages, are given to losing from one to three days a week in busy times through drinking. These are just the kind of people to he envious of those who through patience and perseverance attain to success. They had, doubtless, good reasons of their own for looking on Mr.Stanley with disfavor as tho pioneer of tho movement by which British money is spent on civili/ing foreign lands without always taking the advice or waiting for the consent of tho peoples of those lands. But such philosophy finds great aid from the fact that unthrifty people do not like successful ones.Tuesday, May 19, 1891.WHY THE WARDENS RESIGNED.Thu letter of resignation of the three churchwardens of Notre Dame has been male public. The principal grievances complained of by them are that the cur6 contesta their right to fix the salaries of the church em-plovees ; that the curé seems to be disposed to take notice of the decisions of the churchwardens only in as much as they meet his own views, interpreting tho law and claiming or despenaing with the authority of the bishop, according to the needs of the cause which he is himself disposed to support, and that although the accountant churchwarden is alone authori/.ed to collect the church revenues and to render an account thereof, still the cuié continues to take in the collections, without rendering any account, although repeatedly asked to allow the amount of said collections to be credited to the Fabrique.A DRIVER\u2019S ACCIDENT.Robert Long, a laundry driver, met with an accident at the corner of St.Charles Bor-rommee and St.Catherine street yesterday afternoon. As he was driving past an opening in the street one of the wheels suddenly sank down, causing the horse to take fright and run away. The waggon was overturned, and Sir.Long was thrown violently to the ground, receiving a severe wound on the head about four inches long.Tho injured man was taken up in an unconscious state, the ambulance was summoned, and lie was taken to the General Hospital. The horse ran about three blocks before it was stopped.Tbe waggon, which is worth about Si;>0, was completely smashed.Mr.Long left the hospital for his home last night and to-day is much better.ART SCHOLARSHIPS.The
