Eglise St Camille de Lellis celebration du 100c anniversaire Eglise Trinity célébration du 105e anniversaire Eglise St.Peter's célébration du 150e anniversaire La Tribune 3 IA WIBUNf ÎHFIIBROOKt, SAMfDI ?5 MAI IA6B SON HONNEUR LE MAIRE DONAL CHAPDELAINE / INVITATION.Le maire et les membres du conseil municipal se font un plaisir d'accueillir tous les visiteurs et les invitent à se joindre à la population de Cookshire afin de célébrer avec éclat les anniversaires simultanés de la paroisse St-Camille de Lellis (100 ans), ainsi que des églises Trinity (105 ons) et St.Peter's (150 ans).VILLE de COOKSHIRE INVITATION.The Mayor and the Members of the Municipal Council take pleasure in greeting all the visitors and invite them to join the population of Cookshire in the happy celebration of the simultaneous anniversaries of the St Peter's Church (150 years), the Trinity Church (105 years) and the St.Camille de Lellis Parish (100 years) M Maurice Talbot, échevm M Grant Garneau, échcvin M Jeon Metric Bcaudom, ec Kevin ¦ M John Gill, échevm M Lucien Brault, échevm M Ernect Nadeau, échevm .i -, M Rosaire Doyon, sec refaire trésorier ne EDITION SPECIALE La Tribune LE PLUS GRAND QUOTIDIEN DE LA RIVE SUD FETES ANNIVERSAIRES A (OOKSHIRE Cookshire en fête tout leté La ville de Cookshire est sur le point de célébrer plusieurs anniversaires importants au cours de l'été, le centenaire de la paroisse érigée sous le vocable de saint Camille, le cent cinquantième de la mission anglicane St Peter's, le 75e de l'incorporation de la municipalité et le 50e de l'arrivée des religieuses des Saints Noms de Jésus et de Marie.Ces célébrations, qui seront inaugurées le 2 juin par un concert en l'église catholique, ont demandé beaucoup de travail depuis plusieurs mois et des sous-comités ont été ajoutés au comité général pour la bonne marche des manifestations.C'est en 1834 que les prêtres catholiques auraient commencé à \"missionner\" dans Cookshire et parmi ces premiers missionnaires, plusieurs qui é-taient irlandais furent les premiers curés de St-Mi-chel de Sherbrooke.La municipalité fut désignée au debut sous le nom d'Eaton, probablement a cause de la rivière de ce nom qui coupe le bas de la ville en deux.Les premiers colons y seraient arrivés vers 1800, venant du New Hampshire et du Vermont et c'est l'un d'eux, John Cook, qui a donné son nom à la localité.D'après le dernier recensement paroissial, la population totale est de 2,223, celle catholique, de 1,700 et les familles, de 330.Cookshire est l'une des coquettes localités du comté de Compton Elle est le chef-lieu de la circonscription électorale au fédéral tandis que Bury est celui au provincial Cookshire est l'une des petites villes et villages de la région qui furent le plus affectés lors du mémorable cyclone du début d'août 1933, alors que les plus gros dommages avaient été enregistrés à l'église catholique.Celle-ci se trouvait dans la trajectoire de l'ouragan et fut pour ainsi dire complètement démolie.Ses murs avaient été lézardés, une partie du toit s'était effondrée et le clocher s'était écrasé sur la terrasse du presbytère On chercha la cloche et on la trouva sous la galerie Le curé du temps lui-mème l'échappa belle.C'était une belle église de briques rouges mais l'intérieur n'était pas fini.L'ouragan fut le prétexte à sa reconstruction et on utilisa ce qui restait de solide à la base des murs, mais on la reconstruisit plus basse et à la même occasion, on aménagea l'intérieur.L'ouragan avait laissé beaucoup d autres meurtrissures dans le village.Les mois prochains, à l'occasion des fêtes qui s'annoncent, on arrivera sans doute à cette page, mais on la tournera sans hésitation comme toutes les pages où s'inscrivent les souvenirs que l'on veut oublier.The Cookshire of Yesterday and Today Three religious celebrations are underway in Cookshire, starting this June the second.They are the 150th of St Peter's Anglican Church, the 105th of the Trinity Church and the centenary of the St-Comille de Lellis Roman Catholic Church.Not so many localities in the neighborhood, even in the Eastern Townships can be proud of such accomplishments.Of course, the living people of this day are not responsible at large of the growth of a little borough that became a village, and then a town are at the very start and responsible for what has been done, but their descendants have kept the ball rolling a-round.Cookshire was first called Eaton by the name, we would think, of some settler who came there first The very beginning seems to have started a-round 1800 when a man by the name of John Cook came from New Hampshire or Vermont and his name was given to the borough or hamlet on outlet since there was a river there.The first missionnaries were of protestant faith and established St-Peter's Anglican Church;
