Titre :
The Quebec mercury

whatever power, im-(or)-pro|>cl!ed.It | is however richly stored with articles suited to all tastes, that it of the “reading public;" some of these it will be our pleasing task to notice on tins occasion. The opening paper is a review of a pamphlet, •• Ot Popular and Liitr-d f.lHeultot," by Fiufestor ( .tldwell, of :he Tian«\\l.1 vaosa University, Kentuck*.The pamphlet gives un- i favourable account* of the state of (mpular education generally in the United States, though it makes some exceptions, and attributes this defect to causes which must always militate a-gaimt education,vu the want of adequate remuiieiation to the teacher*, acca-ioiiing those important offices to be held by pcrwmt ill suited to the task and unal.la to command respect from the pupils portion of the community ran ••toil to the highest eminence and uarlainess, for which their faculties have lilted them.A contrary course has often driven young men from rolleges and universities, who, had they been indulged in their favourite studies, and liberated from those toward* which they had a native and unconquerable aversion, might have become ornaments to science, aud benefactors of their iace." On this principle the Prnfcsmr, if w* read him correctly, disapproves of pei severing in the study of the Clawics, where the scholar evinces an evident distaste for Mich acquirements, and ftpreially where the line of life in which be is to move does not render such acquirement necessary to bis success, or standing in society.H I’rttrorfh is continued in the
