Mind you, folks do prefer a smart monkey leader -well, reasonably smart- but what voters look for most is an \u201cappearance of strength\u201d.Now if we do a kind of collage on party leaders as to their resemblance to the apes, what do we get?Because of his larger size compared to other candidates, incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper is unquestionably the big gorilla.Stéphane Dion, more willowy, looks to be a chimpanzee.Jack Layton, on the athletic side, is somewhere between a gorilla and monkey- let's say an orangutan.Gilles Duceppe is a tall, spider monkey- but let us not forget, a \u201cdistinct\u201d breed of these.Elizabeth May is a female baboon figure very much at home in her green jungle- watch out! It is important to understand what monkey-politicians do to win votes.They get your vote by engaging in \u201cconfrontational communication\u201d.This is just like the grunts and growls and screams of jungle animals - only more linguistically sophisticated.Here's a sample: Monkey Candidate A : \u201cI have great ideas\u201d (grunt) Monkey Candidate B: \u201cI have better ideas\u201d (grunt and growl) Monkey Candidate C: My opponents are so bad, they will screw up the country with their agenda, making you poorer, killing you with policies that encourage pollution and so destroy your supply of bananas, etc.(extreme scream) To bring more drama to the electoral situation, they enter into public debates on TV which are really spectacles involving confrontational communication on a grand scale.But here is where the emphasis is not only on ideas but presenting them in a very physical fashion using body language.The intention of politician-monkeys is to show that they are not only smart but swift, in a kind of Darwinian demonstration of the survival of the fittest.They bare their teeth, swing their arms, point fingers and make extreme faces and strident screams in an effort to dominate.We saw them engaging in this behaviour around a table at the TV debate; Ma famille est mon bonheur et deux fois par année, le Nouveau-Brunswick est mon port où j'y jette mon ancre pour quelques jours.Qu'il fait bon se retrouver chez-nous ! J'aime sentir le pain frais de ma Mamie, discuter et rire à table avec ma mère et mes oncles, accueillir la visite qui s'invite continuellement à la maison, prendre des marches sur le bord de la mer.J'aime retrouver les manies et coutumes familiales, l'accent acadien, l'odeur saline sur ma peau et le sable entre mes orteils.Dès mon arrivée, j'aime faire le tour de la maison, sentir son odeur particulière, vérifier si certaines choses ont changé, certains meubles ont été déplacés.J'aime retrouver mon lit, les vieux objets auxquels je me suis attachée au fil des années.J'aime retrouver les sandwiches au baloney de ma grand-mère, son fameux steak et la lasagne de ma mère qui, même si elle m'en a donné la recette, est toujours telle- ment meilleure que la mienne.J'aime emmagasiner leurs voix, leurs rires, leurs odeurs.J'aime les filmer à leur insu.À mon retour quand je m'ennuierai, je ressortirai ces films et j'aurai alors l'impression d'être avec eux malgré la distance.La famille, c'est celle qui nous unit par le lien de sang.Celle qu'on se crée parce qu'on demeure loin de chez-soi ou que la nôtre n'existe plus.Celle que l'on choisit, à défaut de ne pas bien s'entendre avec sa famille.À mon retour à Ottawa, je retrouverai ma famille « adoptive ».Celle qui m'aide à rendre les fêtes plus tolérables et à trouver un certain plaisir quand il est impossible d'être avec la mienne.Et quand l'ennui de ma famille me sera devenu insupportable, je visionnerai ces films et regarderai les photos prises cet été.Dans environ 52 jours, je serai de retour avec eux !
