settling small affairs with the Militia Department, prior to the meeting of the claims commission in this city next month, Mr, McGibbon stated to-day that the recent reports of a rising of the Blood and other Indiansin the Alberta District were greatly exaggerated.Beyond a few cases of horse stealing in the vicinity of Fort McLeod the members of the various tribes are unusually quiet. The American Indians across the border need not be expected to commit any inroads of British territory jon account of the stringent measures adopted by the American Government. The Black Feet, the strongest and most warlike tribe in the Territories, are still friendly.Speaking of the work accomplished by the war, Commissioner McGibbon said that between one thousand and twelve hundred claims have been considered, In the mejority of cases they were to recover the amount sustained by the loss of horses on the trail Jor in action, broken vebi- cles, etc.everal enterprising individuals, who thought to, realize handsomely by claiming heavy amounts, were disappointed to find that their bills were considerably reduced. One third of the task is uncompleted, but it will be disposed of at the approaching session of the board in this city next month. The amount paid out at Winnipeg, so far, as contingent ex- enses of the campaign, including claims iquidated, was about $3,250,000, Judge McDougall, this morning, at Aylmer, sentenced young Ardel, found guilty of manslaughter, on Thursday last, to fourteen years in the penitentiary, the highest penalty the law allows for that crime, In sentencing him, lay to until morning, We then approached to about a distance of two miles.I have not words to express my wonder and surprise at its changing splendor.Eruptions take place every one or two minutes, chauging its appearance every second like a dissolving view.I can only say it was one of the most awfully graud sights I ever witnessed on the high seas. The volcano is about fourteen miles from the Island of Honga Tonga. As to the size of this island thrown up, I am unable to state cor- [ rectly, there being so much steam and clouds hanging over it, but I judge it is at least two or three miles long and sixty feet high, Death of a Prominent Land Owner.PIERREPORT MANOR, N.Y, Dec.21.— Hon.William C.Pierreport, L.L.D., died yesterday morning, aged 83.He inherited 500,000 acres of land in Pa., Dec.21.—The last Clement Markham and Cap-/ Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg, father | messenger connected with the exploring party came out of the slope at 12.20 a.m., and reports that none of the men have as yet been discovered, All hope is abandoned by rescuers of ever seeing their comrades alive again. They are making vigorous search, but it appears to be almost certain that the unfortunate men perished.WILKESBARRE, Pa, Dec.21.-At the fatal shaft in Nanticoke, this evening, little was to be observed of a different nature than what has occurred on other days since the disaster took plpce at Morgantown, a mining village a few miles from Nanticoke. All the miners suspended work to-day and joined the relief party at Nanticoke.Four men are now at work at No.1 slope, which enters the fatal chamber, working en eight hour shifts, One hundred men are vigorously digging away at the first, being relieved every six hours.Itis by this way that the only hopes are entertained of ever saving them.Cars of rock and sand are sent out every eight hours from the salope, but the treacherous quicksand, mixed with culim, keeps pouring in, so that it is impossible to form an idea of the vastness of the work that lies before the relief party. The fan is kept running night and day, but experienced ine bosses doubt whether there is sufficient power to cause fresh air to penetrate the vast obstruction filling the gangway of No.1 slope. In case the air is cut off, the imprisoned men are lost, It is estimated by some persons that the relief party will be able to reach the missing men some time during the night, but old and experienced miners and mine contractors are of the opinion that it will take at least two days to cut through the barrier.WILKESBARRE, Pa., Dec.21,—About 9 o’clock, this evening, the work of the rescuing party was euddenly interrupted by another fall of sand, rock and culm. The men were working in a steep incline when a vast mass of debris came down on them with great violence. They fled for their lives and several had very narrow escapes. The work for a time was stopped, but the officials in charge are making strenuous preparations to overcome the difficulty, and hope to have the work progressing again within an hour or two.An Additional Denial.Boston, Dec, 21.-F, Montague Sow- den, who acted as auditor for the Canada Agricultural Insurance Committee on Foreign Relations :— Whereas, The correspondence between the Government of the United States and Austria-Hungary, which has been trars- mitted to the Senate by the President, shows that the Hon, Anthony M.Keiley, 0 was, on April 29, 1885, appointes Minister to Austria-Hungary ; that on May 9, 1885, the Government of the United States was officially notified by the Government of Austria-Hungary that the position of a foreign envoy wedded to a Jewess by civil marriage would be untenable and even impossible in Vienna, and on August 4, 1885, the Government of Austria-Hungary declared its determination not to receive Mr.Keiley as Minister from the United States ; Resolved, By the Senate and House of Representatives that the position assumed by this Government and the principles affirmed in said correspondence by the Secretary of State meet with our unqualified approbation. The Constitution of the United States pro vides that no religious test shall ever be required as qualification to any office ublic trust under the United States, and whilst sincerely anxious to maintain friendly relations with Austria and other Governments, the people of the United States deny the right of any foreign (Fov- ernment to a sert against any citizen of this country disqualification for office by reason of his religious belief or that of his family.Senator West strongly com- Scene of Bustle and Activity. At this season of the year it is not to be expected that much of an interesting nature can be written of the harbor of Montreal, seeing that every vestige of anything denoting that it is a marine depot has disappeared, nothing being left but a few coal dumps which are being carted away with all despatch, some barrels of fish, late importations from the Eastern Prc- vinces and Labrador coast, and a shanty or two, known during the open season as offices.Of course there is nothing to be seen ia the shape of sailing craft, the last of the kind—the dredges of the Harbor Commie- sioners—having been removed to their usual winter quarters at Sorel. It might be mentioned in this connection, that these same dredges did good work during the entire season of navigation, and although their operations in the Dasins this year were somewhat curtailed owing to the sudden and unexpected advent of King Frost, the work was, it is said, satisfactorily performed.Every- thiag is in the usual quiescent state in the offices of the Harbor Commissioners office, the Custom House and other public institutions. The annual report of the Harbor Board will be submitted at the meeting to be held about the 12th or 15th of next month, a detailed statement of the business of the year will then be presented, and it is expected that on the whole the result will be of a satisfactory nature. The preparation of the report 1s a tedious and arduous work, but is being prose~ cuted with as-iduity and attention by the efficient staff in the employ of the Board. There is no change to note in the work of the Custom House. The emplyes prosecute their labors in spite of wind or weather, open water or closed navigation.Their duties during the busy season are arduous and exacting, but to a certain extent they have a,‘ rest” during the ‘glacial period.” East of the Custom House nothing strikes the eye of the spectator so much as the new C.P.R.elavator, now nearly completed. It is a magnificent struciure of the kind, and is visible from all parts of the harbor east or west. Its erection is only another illustration of the enterprize and go-aheardedness of that great corporation, the Canadian Pacific Railway, Treal Zinilm Fjerald Single Co &ubsorip IRELAND'S CRISIS.lies Three Cents on 86.00 a Year.English Statesmen Continue to Discuss the Question of Home Rule.— A Strong Manifesto From the Orangemen of the Emerald Isle. They Appeal for Minority Rights and the Empire's Unity.LoNpoN, Dec.21.— Joseph Cowen, radical reformer, member of Parliament elect for Newcastle-on-Tyne, has issued à manifesto to his constituents respecting Home Rule for Ireland, Cowen was the chief one of the exceptions made by Paw- nell in his manifesto instructing the Nationalists not to vote for Liberal or Radical candidates.Cowen says: *1t is impossib'e for England to consent to protective tariffs fom Ireland, to confiscation of the property of landlords in Ireland, or to allow Irish members to legislate on home affairs in England, in addition te baving their own Parliament. With these exceptions, I approve of Home Rule for Ireland.Paper guarantees for the representation of minorities, equitable partition of all Imperial charges and unity of the Empire in my opinion are useless. The best security against the disruption of the union is the mutual interests existing between England and Ireland.MR.CHILDERS BPEAKS, LONDON, Dec.21.—Hugh C.Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequer under Gladstone’s administration, speaking to-da on the subject of Irish Home Rule, said that his views on the question had under- one no change, He thought that if frome Rule were granted to Ireland, a rigid line should be drawn between strictly Imperial matters which the Imperial Parliament alone should deal with, and measures relating to the ordinary administration of justice, inter nal trade, railways, public wor education and relief of the poor, all o which could be better dealt with by a Local Government, Childers said he was generally disposed to meet in a generons spirit the request of Ireland for local self- government. He thought Parliament might require, even in regulations of urely Irish matters, maintenance of re- Eigious liberty and strict observance of contracts, and that right of property should be as much protected as under the United States constitution from infringement by individual states.OPPOSITION OF THE ORANGE BODY.DuBLiN, Dec.21.—The Grsnd Orange Lodge of Ireland held à meeting in Da lin to-day, to devise means of opposin the scheme of Home Rule for Irelan A large number of Protestants and several Loyalist Members of the House of Commons were present.A manifesto addressed to the Orangemen of Great Britain was drafted and will be posted throughout Great Britain and Ireland tomorrow. The manifesto is substantially as follows : “The aspect of affairs in Ireland was never more menacing than at present.Protestantism in three of four Provinces is at the mercy of avowed conspirators, who are endeavoring to overthrow the rule of the Imperial Government, The duty of all true Irishmen is plain, while unswervingly upholding our principles and abating not eme jot of our conscientious opinion, we shall cordially welcome all who are willing to assist in keeping intact the bond of unity with the great empire, of which we are proud to form a not unimportant part ; our little band of Loyalists nds itself in a position of unequaled difficulty, we are greatly outnumbered by the Irish National League, The but firmly united band of Loyalist members of the House of Commons, by en and determination, may convinee th English brethren that the Loyalists represent the industry and intelligence, of Ireland, If the Parnellite faction does not succeed wholly in its endeavor to sever the union by degrees, one of the first points which is will seek to obtain will be the complete control of educational matters. This would give the Pax- nellites control over the rising generation. If the police should be commanded by Parnell’s nominees, as would cer tainly be the case in the [event of Parnell’s demands being granted, the Loyalists would be placed in a wotse position than that of their ancestors UNDER THE RULE OF TYRJONNEL, The slightest relaxation of the ties of union will eventuate in separation and ultimately in the ruin of the country.K will establish a drill ground for hostile armies and dockyards for foreign fleets in the most vulnerable part of the Empire. Therefore, we appeal to those realizing our imminent peril to stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of the union and in the promotion of the cause of loyalty, liberty and religion, the Queen and the country.” The manifesto is signed by Lords Erne and Enniskillen.PARNELL AND THE AMERICANS, New York, Dec.21.—At a meeting of the Irish Parliamentary Fund Association, to-night, the gold lined, with a gold band encircling it on the outside. On one side is an engraving representing a curling team engaged in play, whilst the other side bears the inscription. The stone or block rests upon three upright brooms crossed, the bandles of which are gilver and the broom part of gold.Beneath the broome, underneath, is a smal iron stone, highly polished, the whole resting on a beautifully carved silver stand.——N.Ÿ.Scottish American Journal.Curling Dinner at Ormstown.MR.D.L.LOCKERBY PRESENTS A SILVER TANKARD FOR COMPETITION AMONG THE CHATEAUGUAY CLUBS.On Friday night last a dinner was given by the Chateauguay Curling Clubs to Mr.D.L.Lockerby, on the occasion of his presenting the clubs with a silver tankard. He had promised to do 80 80 soon as a curling rink had been built, and the Stoney Creek Curling Club being the first in the field the custody of the cup is with them.Ii is to be competed for by tie clubs of Chateauguay County, and to become the property of that club which wins it in two consecutive matches. The games in this competition are to be played for this season at the Stoney Creek Club, at Orme- town and Chateauguay, and in these and all subsequent games in the competition, iron curling stones must be used.‘At the dinner on Friday last Mr.Grey, the Mayor, took the chair and read several letters of regret from gentlemen who were unable to be present, including Colonel McEachern, C.M.G., Colonel Stevenson and othere. There were between fifty and sixty at dinner.Dinner being over, the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were drunk, entire success.Tobogganing.The following notice of the Saratoga, N.Y., Toboggan Slide has been very kindly furnished us by Mr.J.R.McLaren, jr., manufacturer of the Star Toboggans :— What the Saratoga Toboggan Club has already accomplished, with plans now receiving attention for further achievements, gives promise of an exceptional season of exhilarating winter sport at the Spa, OX NEW GROUNDS.The Glen Mitchell grounds of forty acres, one and a quarter miles from the village, have been leased by the Club for one year, with the privilege of renewal. The slide in use last winter at Woodlawn park, which ig about one-quarter of a mile from Glen Mitchell, was provided with only one chute. This was entirely inadequate to meet the demand, members not having more than 8ix or seven slides in an evening, and the leasing of new grounds and the introduction of superior facilities have resulted.WITHOUT AN EQUAL, There has been constructed at Glen Mitchell, this year, a slide with three chutes and which, with all its adjuncts, is | the most extensive and complete in the world. It is far in advance of the Mountain slide at Montreal or the Lansdowne at the same place. The work has been done under the direction of “the executive ‘committee of the Saratoga Toboggan Club, and in a manner thoroughly satisfactory and praiseworthy. The slide starts from a natural elevation and attains the remarkable length of 2,200 feet. The trestle 1s 240 feet long and 76 feet high and is buiit in the strongest manner. Many of the supports are large tamarack trees. In width the slide 18 20 feet. The three chutes are each three and a half feet wide,"and in their length of 240 feet they have a fali of 76 feet. The fall in the first 600 feet of the slide is 112 feet. From the foot of the chutes to the end of the incline there are 36 feet more of fall.Fifteen electric lights will illuminate the chutes and track.FROM WELLS AND LAKE, From four wells on the premises water will be obtained to flood the slide when necessary.Three of the four are driven wells. The chutes will be paved with ice from Saratoga Lake, The blocks will be five feet long, three and a haif feet wile and six inches thick, The glary evenness of this slippery pavement wiil be wain- tained by the freezing, iu the spaces where the blocks are matched, of the water] ‘which will be thrown over the icy passage.PLATFORM AND HOUSE, The roomy platform at the top of the slide is 26x26 feet, has a wall eight feet high around it and is half roofed. The club-houee is at the bottom of the chutes and contains a reception room 86x40 feet, & room for ladies and another for gentlemen, each apartment being 13x15 feet and a kitchen 10x15 feet and supplied with all conveniences. The toboggan house, 40x60 feet, is divided into numbered spaces where the toboggans, of which there ure 500 in the club, are kept when not in use.THE EXPENSES.The club will employ five men about the grounds.John Welsh, who acted as caretaker last season, will hold the same position last winter, The expenses this year will be $3,000 or more, which includes the cost of the new slide and its accom - paniments. The monthly expenses will aggregate $400.THE MEMBERSHIP, The regilar membership now reaches 215, and besides the the roll bears the names of 125 ladies and 150 children. The membership includes residents cf Sara- toga Springs, 'I'roy, Albany, Schenectady, North Adams, Mass., Stottville, Coluin.- bia County, Ballston and New York, those from the last named city including Cornelius Vanderbilt, Dr.W.S.Webb, Spencer Rich Want to Have a Merry Christmas.Where Those Charitably Disposed May Leave Their Gifts.Ae the Christmas season approaches * many people who from their store of comfortable plenty would fain bestow a little upon the more unfortunate, are constantly cuufrouted by the question of how best to reach the worthy poor, how to distinguish them from that vast army of social off- scourings, whose clamorous voices drown the week petitions of the comparatively few deserving. It is a difficult task, and oue that the various charitable institutions of Montreal have tried for upward of twenty years to successfully accomplish» with good, if not with successful, results. With the advent of every winter, bringing with it Christmas and New Years holidays, there somes to the knowledge of many persons cases of jextreme poverty, which they are able 10 assist s0 as to briog happiness and good cheer to many homes. However, if one does not know of any case deserving charity from personal experience, the best way is to depend upou tuose societies organized for the special purpose of assisting the poor, and especially upon the wiedom and experience of the Protestaut Board of Associated Charities, acustomed to discriminate between the true and false in poverty, this association can furnish unlimited sug gestions.Unlike many other charitable institutions, they do not enroll their proteges as paupers, but all assistance is rendered privately, thus upbailding the pride and independecce of the needy. Those who have not money to bestow can give simply a portion of their time, and this association will give them a list of houses to visit, where money, clothing or provisions will be most thankfully received. The central office of the Association is at the Protestant House of Industry and Refuge, on Dorchester street.Alderman W.D.Stroud is President of the Board, and Mr.Edward Hollis is the able and efficient Secretary.Mr.D, McMillan, Superintendent of the House of Refuge, is aiso a member of the Board, and will undertake to place all donaticns eatrusted to him where they will do the most good.Under the supervision of the associated charities the city is divided into eight Mr.J.K.Ward, President of the St.George’s Society has issued a circular which has been widely distributed asking that money and provisions be sent in to enable the Society to make glad the many week, which opens to-day, is always full of interest to those who ad- mixe gaily-decorated stores and tempting arrays of presents for the holiday season.Shoppers find a source of pleasure in visiting those establishments which make a gpecisl display at this ceason, even when their purchases are confined to the neces- garies of life or a few simple and cheap delicacies to grace the Christmas table. To those whose purses are fuller there isa pewildering profusion of purchaseable commodities either to add to home comforts or to gladden the hearts of others in the form of presents.A hasty tour among & number of the retail establishments of the city reveals no lack of special preparatio.s for largehearted holiday purchasers. To begin with, the caterers to the cupboards and dining tables of the community merit special notice at a seasou when ‘‘Christmas Cheer” forms so large a factor in the festivities of the season.FRASER, VIGER & 00.A glance At the exlerior of the popular store of Fraser, Viger & Co., 199 St.James street, is but an index of the cheerful character of the interior aspect.Rows of evergreens “doue up in moderate-sized bundles for home decorations are the firet objects which attract the eye.Enormous wild turkeys imported expressly for Christmas week hang in the doorway besides numerous qualities of game, plump and wholesome looking.Inside the store the variety of articles to complete the housewife’s special Christmas dinner is profusion itself.raser, Viger & Co.’s rhelves contain the choicest quality only of staple and fancy groceries, as their large and increasing family trade testifies. In preserved fruits, confections and other seasonable delicacies, the display 18 more than ordivarily tempting. This firm has a more than local re- utation for the quality of its wines and iquors for family use, aud in thie branch of their business it is sufficient to say that an extra effort has been made to preserve a full line of the very choicest grades for the Christmas trade.Ales aud porters of special bottling fur the holidays, and the celebrated light wines of the firm’s own bottling are a special feature of the display. The finest brands of Havana cigars in boxes are to be purchased here, and form one of the most acceptable in the range of Christmas gifts to gentlemen. An enumeration of one-tenth of uhe articles which are absolutely necessary to the correct furnishing of the Christmas board would tax more space than is at our command, and when we add that a staff of obliging snd willing clerks find a genuine pleasure in showing goods to customers it may be inferred that a visit to Fraser, Viger & Co.’s will repay those who intend purchasing holiday supplies.DETLEFS BROS.The large and brilliant show window of Detlets Bros., corner Victoria and St.Catherine streets, is a constant source of attraction to pedestrians on that busy thoroughfare, The display of confectionery and candy toys suggests to the children unlimited good thiugs for Christmas, and the beautiful samples of holiday cake baking makes the prudent young housewife wisely consider the advisability of purchasing tlie ready-made article instead A Christmas of soiling her daiuty hands.À ( dinner witho at tue lighter qualities of des~ sert would be an anomaly and a visit to Detlefs Bros.is all thet is required to furnish one’s table witu the daiutiest of ices, jellies, trifles and marvelous tidbits in the form of light and digestible cakes. This firm is making a specialty of ordered cakes for Christmas, and is already booking a large number of orders in advance both from town and country.DAWSON BROS.Holiday gifts are pre-eminently saleable goods at this season of the year and, as a consequence, the book aud toy stores have donned their handsomest holiday attire.Speaking of gifis, it is one of the pleasing signs of the times that so many take the form of enduring interest, such as books of trgvel, poetry or standard fiction.Richly encased and illustrated works line the shelves of the bookstores, many of them being veritable gems of art.A visit to Messrs.Dawson Bros., at 233 8t.James street, or their branch store, 1336 St.Catheriue atreet, is a treat to lovers of books, whether of solid literature for the mature or of tuy-books for the children. To the latter this store is simply a fairyland or delight, and their eyes never ure of feast- log ou the splendid productions of the children’s artists either inside or outside thé covers of the i'lustrated books for boys and girls.Presente iu eudless varie'y can be found here to suit every age and condition of life. The full lines of elegant stationery and Christmas cards appear to attract the special attention of the lady oustomers of the establishment, W.J, CLARKE & CO.Another very attractive store during the present Christmas season is Messrs.W.J.Clarke & Co.’s, Beaver Hall Hill, It is to children the storehouse of Santa Claus, where the old gentleman lays in his stock preparatory to his Christmas morning rounds.Toye of all grades, quality and uniform attractiveness go to make up as preity a display as can be found in any of the city stores.Dolls, large and small, for girls, rockiog horses aud wonderful Noah's arks tor’ boys, toy biocks for the very young children, and a thousand and one other sources of pleasure to the Jus en- le world can be found in profusion.‘Fancy workboxes, albums, photograph frames, and the endless bric-a-brac of gift articles which gentlemen are in the habit of purchasing for their lady friends or vice versa, and a large stock of very elegant gift books are among the special attractions at Messrs, Clarke & Co.'s during the present week.THOS.ALLAN & 00.3 Souvenirs of Christmas tide never take 8 more acceptable form to the majority of personal friends or relatives than keepsakes in the shape of the articles to be Purchased at a jewellery store.Watch charms, chains or rings for gentlemen, son at Thos.Allan & Co’s., 1307 St, Catherine street.Diamond setting is a specialty with this firm, and the extensive quantity of beautiful gems contained in their show cases is well worthy the inspection of intending purchasers.A line of exceedingly beautiful vases and bouquet holders iu chaste and rich workmanship are very desirable articles for Christmas gifts. The reputation of this firm for manufactured jewellery is a guarantee that special attention will be paid to ordered work, F.E.GRAFTON & BONS.Messrs.F.BE.Grafton & Sons 250 and 252 St.James street, have made their store exceptionally attractive for the Christmas season.Their stock of gift books is large and elegant, and comprises the newest as well as the more standard literary productions, A line ot devotional works, such as prayer books, hymn books and Bibles, in elegant bindings and cases, are especially suitable for presents.Messrs.Grafton & Sons are selling a large number of beautiful pocket books, diaries and note books as presents from ladies to their gentlemen friends, A very pretty article just received is a Calendar ia the form of a crescent and star, which is very tasteful in design and an agreeable New Year’s souvenir. The bound volumes of the favorite magazines, illustrated by the world’s best-known artists, which are shown at this store are among the most acceptable of holiday gifts, either to young or old.PAISLEY & ROSS.The festivities of the holiday season call for more than the creature comforts to be found in a well-filled larder, and the male portion of the community at this season are often obliged to ‘“ dress up” for the gayeties incident to holiday-making.The conventional dress suit for balls and parties, or out-door garments for driving, walking, skating or tobogganing can be ovtained nowhere to better advantage than at the store of Paisley & Rose, 206 St.James street.A visit to their store will convince the observer that tneir principal patronage is among the class in the community who specially pride themselves upon being well- dreseed. The quality of material is the best, and the firm°s prices are exceptionally low.The nobbiest overcoatiugs and suit.ings for winter wear are piled in great variety on the shelves of the firm and meet with ready sale.Fur-edged coats in the various styles pleasing to the wearers, and in all grades of expengiveness are having a great run, as Paisley & Ross have made a successful effort to turn out only the finest quality of work.R.J.TOOKE.À call at the store of Mr.R.J.Tooke, 177 St.James street, is always full of interest to those who are looking for the most useful class of presents for their gentlemen friends. This fact is attested by the number of ladies who have lately taken to shopping at this well-known gentlemen’s furnishing store.A more acceptable gift to a gentleman on Christmas morning than a box of the beautiful initial handkerchiefs shown al this store it would be difficult to imagine. Many ladies will choose as presents for husbands or brothers some ot the choice assortment of tuques, sashes, scarfs or ties to be found at Tooke’s.Elegant lines of underwear, collars and cuffs are to be found here, and are well suited for gifts to gentlemen.A genuine
