after an illness of six months, Dr.Melville Chretien died.During Dr.Chretien\u2019s six months of illness, he spent several weeks in the Hotel Dieu hospital and then returned home to live out his few remaining days.He was fifty years and four months old.Dr.Chretien was born in St.Frederic, County of Beau-ce, and for the past twenty-three years had resided in Leeds as a doctor, being called by all from far and near.He married Lucien Perron in 1937 and to this union five children were born, Jean Remi, Paul, Aljne, Therese and Jeanne, all of whom survive him.He also leaves to mourn his passing, his aged father, Dr.J.R.Chretien of St.Frederic and several brothers and aisters-in-law.Dr.Chretien was mayor of Leeds for a term, served on the School Board and was always ready to give advice and year on January IGth.The meeting was presided over by their Officers Mrs.R.Gingras, Captain, Miss G.Doyle and Miss Annie Foy, Lieutenants.The meeting was opened with the inspection and roll call, after which, the guides s\u2019tood in forma- tion while the Captain addressed the Company.Following this the tying of knots was reviewed and the semaphore study was begun.Since this English Girl Annual Meeting of the Thet-ford Mines United Church was* held in the Church Hall, Monday evening, January 20th, with Rev.L.v all Simpson presiding.The meeting opened with a hymn followed by a prayer.The minutes of 'the previous meeting were read by the retiring Secretary, Mr.Leonard Montgomery, who having filled this office in a most devoted and faithful manner for tlie past IP years now wished to retire.Rev.L.Simpson thanked Mr.Montgomery for the well recorded minutes and expressed appreciation for the many years he had given to this office.A vote of thanks followed and Mr.Norman Bradley took over having been elected to this office replacing Mr.Montgomery.The correspondence, consisting of one letter of resignation from Mr.C.V.Hacker, ns Trustee, was read.Rev.L.Simpson, Chairman of the Session, then read a report giving the membership of the church during 1057 as G4 ; with a pastoral oversight of 237.He said the Session had met regularly during the year, the elders having served at 5 communion services.He explained further the duties of the Session which included handling special services, the Vacation School having been a product of the Sessions and, in concl ;-sion, he suggested that a Benevolent Fund be established for needy persons in our midst.As Mr.Finley Morrison wished to retire as Elder, Mr.G.Kuyt wa selected to replace Mr.Morrison.The elders, miscellaneous items would bring the budget for 1958 to about $5,834.55.average attendance of 85%.The Junior Choir\u2019s membership had increased from 10 to 2(3 in the past year with an average attendance of 75%.Mrs.David Scott was at present Choir Leader and Organist.Rev.L.Simpson reported on behalf of the Official Board saying that the Kinnear\u2019s Mills and The't-ford Mines boards had met 3 times during the year.Of this board, Mr.Henry Robinson was the official representative to Presbytery.The tenu of office for Mrs.\tThe question was brought for- Kenneth Little and Mr.Harry Eden, as Stewards having come to an end, an election followed with Mrs.Lit\u2019lle and Mr.Eden being re-elected as Stewards.Messrs.Oliver Morrison, E.W.Reid, ,\\V.Hoogendyk, A.Hollet and L.Taylor continued for their term of office.The report of the Trustee Board was then given by Rev.L.Simpson outlining their duties during the past year which consisted of moving furnishings and equipping the new church, attending to insurance and legal matters, a caretaker, and having set up a committee responsible for the new parking area at the church.Mr.U.A.Vaudrey was then asked to give a report regarding insurance matters in which policies hud been very efficiently drawn up covering insuring the building and contents including coverage of }>elisons injured on the premises.Mr.E.\\V.Reid then gave a report on the Building Finance Committee.He began by expressing grateful appreciation to Miss Phyllis Hacker, who during the past year had very ably handled the many details re money matters involved on this committee.He also thanked thd ladies for their donated time and money which had been a great help.In his financial report he pointed out that the Time Cost of the new building is $40,485.30 while the True Value is $52,732.31.He also added that within one year we would be freo of debt and would own the church.A special vote of thanks was moved to Mr.Reid for his untiring efforts on this committee.A report then followed of the Missionary and Maintenance Committee given by Mr.Robert Scott.In his report he mentioned that n total of $421.GO had been spent on the M.and M.Fund which showed an increase but it was hoped io surpass this amount in the coming year.The Superintendent of the Sunday School, Mrs.Henry Robinson, was then asked to give her report on the work of the Sunday School.At the beginning of 1957 there were 40 pupils and 4 teachers, and at the end of the year there were 54 pupils and 7 teachers.There had been a picnis for the Sunday School in the summer months and the W.A.\u2014W.M.S.Iftdies had given a Christmas party.The Cradle Roll Enrollment, at the beginning of 1957 had been 11, with 2 christenings and 7 promotion to the Beginners\u2019 Classes, there now remained G.The report of the Women\u2019s Association-Women\u2019s Missionary Society followed being given by Mrs.Howard McHarg President.The financial report showed a Balance on Hand of $1,215.29 with a total of $1,500.having been given to the Building Fund during the year.The activities consisted mainly of the Opening of the New Church in March, a May day Turkey Supper and the annual Bazaar, in addition to the regular meetings.The membership totalled 35.The Get-Together Club was called upon to give a report and this was given by Mr.Dick Boardman in the absence of Mr.Dick Hall, its President.Mr.Boardman reported that this club had been formed mainly to promote Christian fellowship in the church and was not money-making organization.There were about 30 members belonging.Mrs.P.Kennedy then gave a report on the Senior and Junior Choirs, as President of the Senior Choir.There had been 13 members in the Senior Choir at the beginning of 1957 and had increased to 16 at the year'» end with an ward regarding the Bible Society and Rev.Simpson said a few words about the very fine and faithful work done by Mrs.W.Petery which was greatly appreciated by all.Mrs.Petery then expressed the wish to retire from this but was persuaded to carry on and a new committee was formed with Mrs.Finley Morrison, Mrs.Harr\\ Eden and Mr.Robert Scott a* members 'to give assistance to Mrs Petery who has so ably done this work .alone for so manv vears.Rev.L.Simpson then spoke emphasizing what a successful year it had been showing a measure of special growth, pointing out 'that it had been a stimulating year for he and Mrs.Simpson beginning with the completion and dedication of the new church, with his first class of cummu ni cants being held, a joyful Easter sendee had followed, then his ordination on June 6th had taken place which was a very happy occasion, and on June 21st 'the Quebec Sherbrooke Presbytery having met in Kinnear\u2019s Mills when he had been inducted as minister of the Kin-near\u2019s Mills\u2014Thetford Mines pastoral charge.He had also been privileged to spend two weeks at a Boy\u2019s Camp which was followed by a much-needed holiday in July.In August had been the sad experience of the floods in this a-rea and the never-to-be-forgotten search for the bodies of Mrs.John Larochelle and children.The Vacation School, held in August had been a most worthwhile experience, and people were*already asking to have it repeated.The Christmas service with the children taking part and a special Christmas Eve Carol Service had been most uplifting and 'then, to climax it all, he and Mrs.Simpson had been blessed with a son on Christmas morning.He went on to say that during the past year there had been many new beginnings, many ways in which God had been with us in the work of His church.However, we in this church still needed to get our roots deeper and to press on.The Secretary was authorized to write
