MATTHEW MCCULLY CONT’D ON PAGE 5 Regional homelessness count to begin April 24 By Gordon Lambie The CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS, the Eastern Townships’ regional healthcare institution, will be counting the region’s homeless people on the night of April 24 and over the course of the days that follow in the hopes of being able to produce a better picture of the resources and support needed.Entitled “Tout le monde compte,” which translates to, “everyone counts,” the activity is part of a simultaneous survey of the province aimed at producing an overall report on homelessness in Quebec by 2020 and a Canada-wide initiative to count people who are homeless at the same time of the year.Charles Coulombe, who oversees the coordination of matters related to homelessness between different sectors of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS, explained that the focus of this activity is not to get an exact census of who is homeless and who is not, but rather to get a clearer Tenants begin the search for new accommodations CONT’D ON PAGE 3 To say that Anthony Horowitz is a prolific writer badly understates the case.Nor is it just the volume and quality of his production that is astonishing, but also the variety. He started out writing primarily for children and young adult audiences with the Alex Rider and Diamond Brothers series. He has also done plays, story collections, graphic novels and movie screenplays. But he is probably best known for writing television scripts for such popular series as Foyle’s War and Midsomer Murders, as well as doing many of the adaptations of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot stories for the TV series starring David Suchet. It is only in recent years that the OBE has turned his attention to writing novels for adult audiences, spurred on by the estates of Arthur Conan Doyle and Ian Fleming, who commissioned him to write two new Sherlock Holmes adventures (The House of Silk and Moriarty) and a new James Bond thriller (Trigger- Mortis). Now Horowitz has crafted the double barrelled Magpie Murders.Your host and narrator for these two interconnected mysteries is Susan Ryeland, a book editor for Cloverleaf Books. Her boss, Charles Clover, has given her a manuscript to read over the weekend. It is the ninth in the very popular Atticus Pünd series by Alan Conway.Pünd is largely an imitation of Christie’s Poirot.Instead of being a Belgian refugee from WWI, he is a German prison camp survivor from WWII.Like Poirot, he is a fastidious dresser, vain about his appearance and his detecting abilities, and he even has a clueless assistant named Fraser. When we meet Pünd, it is 1955 and he is at the doctor’s receiving the bad news that a brain tumor has left him with only a few months to live. This revelation sets off alarm bells for Ryeland and Pünd.The Pünd novels are Cloverleaf’s most popular books and their chief source of income. If Conway is writing the end to this character, Cloverleaf is in almost as much peril as Pünd himself. So it is no surprise that when Joy Sanderling, a young woman from the village of Saxby-on-Avon in Somerset, asks Pünd to investigate the death of her boyfriend’s mother, Atticus politely refuses.Mary Blakiston had fallen down the main staircase in Pye Hall where she lived and worked as the housekeeper. The police are treating her death as an accident. But the last words her son Robert shouted at her outside the Queen’s Arms pub were, “I just wish you’d drop dead and give me a bit of peace.” Suspicious tongues in the village are wagging. It is only when there is a violent death in the same building a few days later that is unquestionably not an accident that Pünd decides he might have time for one last case. One of the things we learn about Conway is that he loves word games and puzzles.Atticus Pünd turns out to be a three word anagram. The names of the main characters and suspects all have a common theme.Sir Magnus Pye, the lord of Pye Hall, is evidently the Mag Pye of the story who will be revealed as the murderer or the murderee. The investigation proceeds apace until Atticus finally announces in true Poirotian fashion that it is time to summon the suspects and the police so that he can demonstrate how clever he has been in solving the crimes. And that is where the manuscript ends. The last few chapters are missing. When Ryeland tells Clover about this, he informs her that Conway won’t tell them: he has died over the weekend, the victim of a fall from the upper terrace at Abbey Grange, his home in Suffolk.A note in the mail from Conway reveals that he too was dying of cancer and appears to have taken his own life.Ryeland sets off for Suffolk to look for the missing pages. She does not find the rest of the manuscript, but she does find people who don’t buy the suicide story and evidence that they may be right. This makes the quest for the manuscript pages more urgent.Ryeland thinks that Conway planned to reveal more in those pages than just the fictional killer in Saxby-on-Avon.And that revelation was damaging enough to make it worth someone’s while to kill Conway and steal the final pages. So if she can find the missing pages, she can find Conway’s killer.Or vice versa. If a murder mystery can be described as fun, Magpie Murders is it.The one complaint I have is that the whole enterprise is a bit long. But who cares when you are enjoying yourself, as I certainly did?-Vincent Cuddihy All of the titles mentioned in this review are in the this Saturday, April 7, at the Galeries Quatre Saisons shopping mall on 13th Avenue North in Sherbrooke. From 10 a.m.to 4 p.m.reservists will be on site with vehicles and equipment offering workshops and information on their areas of expertise to the general public.According to Lieutenant Jean- François Wehrung, the public affairs representative for the Hussars, this open house is being held at the mall as part of an effort to be more accessible.“We want to move closer to the community,” Wehrung said, noting that the unit’s armoury, located between William and Winter Streets in Sherbrooke’s north end, is not in a very high-traffic area. The open house will feature both an indoor and outdoor space to meet with representatives of the two units; where the indoor location will offer a more comfortable opportunity to talk about the work of the Army reservists, the area in the mall parking lot with serve as an exhibition of the Hussars’ Tactical Armoured Patrol become a one- stop shop for resources and services for English Townshippers, Murray said the condition of the building has reached a point where the board is thinking of disposing of the property in the long-term.Townshippers’ Association President Gerald Cutting said the Marguerite Knapp building would be a hard act to follow, but was optimistic about finding new quarters.“It was the place for things English,” Cutting said, explaining there was many a time there were mutual referrals among the organizations in the building.“It’s not a surprise,” commented Cutting, saying the association knew there would be a time, given the state of the building, that this day would come.“We’re in search mode at the moment,” he said. The tenants include Centre, The Townships Sun and the Township Regional Union of Support Staff. While sticking together would be the ideal scenario, Cutting said the various organizations have to be realistic about the situation. With so many must-haves in terms of location, space and accessibility, a number of the groups will likely go their separate ways.“We’re really thankful,” Cutting said, for the failure proves deadly for Magog pet shop denizens Record staff MAGOG The Animalerie Orford pet shop at Magog’s Galleries Orford, was in crisis Thursday morning when its owners discovered that several dozen animals had died overnight as temperatures plunged inside the store. When the owners showed up for work, they found that the temperature had dropped to 8 degrees Celsius and that dozens of fish, birds, including a parrot had succumbed. They also had to bring their cats to a veterinarian because of the deplorable state they were in.Financial losses to the store are estimated at between $5,000 and $10,000.Evidently, the sprinkler system in the shopping centre, where work is being done, froze overnight, causing the ventilation and heating systems to shut down automatically.Normally, the pet shop managers would receive an alert so that they could intervene quickly, In this instance, an Internet connection problem at the store apparently caused the system to fail. The store said it will survive the dis- taster but admits the situation is difficult, especially since the victims were animals and represent significant financial losses.Re-supplying the store could take some time. For the fish alone, many have to be imported from Asia.Despite the circumstances, the store remained open Thursday. CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 picture of what resources are needed and where.“When we look at everything all together, it will give us a better idea of the scale of the issue and the needs in the community,” the coordinator said.In mid-March the Table itinérance de Sherbrooke (TIS), Sherbrooke's round table group on homelessness, expressed concerns about the counting activity in a letter sent to local media.Coulombe acknowledged the group’s concerns, but pointed out that the count is one part of a four step process.“We agree that if all we were doing was counting, things would not go very far,” he said, explaining that the count will be followed by a voluntary questionnaire in local resource centres and shelters, a survey of local services to determine annual use, and an attempt to determine social and societal causes of homelessness on the local level.Coulombe said that the TIS’s feelings that the questions might stigmatize their clientele are “completely legitimate,” but put an emphasis on trying to get as much information as possible without pushing further than participants are willing to go.“We are not going to be walking around saying, hello, are you homeless,” the coordinator said.“that is not how this works.” Coulombe also drew a distinction between visible and hidden homelessness, explaining that the organizers of the upcoming count are conscious of the fact that people are not necessarily homeless at all times, do not necessarily think of themselves as homeless, and that not all people who could be considered homeless can be found by wandering downtown street corners and local shelters.“It is not the end of the world if we do not reach everyone,” he said, clarifying that the follow-up steps are meant to help get a clearer sense of the scope of hidden homelessness in the region.“For those of us at the CIUSSS, these results will always be one piece of the puzzle,” Coulombe said.Michelle Morin, the Regional Coordinator for the count, said that the CIUSSS is currently looking for about 100 volunteers aged 16 years or older in Sherbrooke and Granby to help out on the night of April 24 and the following days.“We have decided to focus on streets in Sherbrooke and Granby based on input from local resources,” Morin said, explaining that the organizations at work in other municipalities across the region said that homelessness in their communities has a greater tendency to be hidden.Volunteers will work in teams of two, and Morin said that an effort will be made that at least one member of each volunteer pairing will be able to speak English. The questionnaires given out as a part of step two of the project will also be available in English.“When we are in a place of vulnerability, it is important to have access to services in our own language,” Coulombe said.Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the count is invited to register online at the website of the ministry of health and social services, http://msss.gouv.qc.ca.The section devoted to the “Tout le monde compte,” activity is not available can’t find a dress in our closet,” Grey said, adding the committee has a seamstress on hand to help with alterations. This year, there are 17 students on the list for some prom primping.Because of the popularity of the initiative, the Prom Fairies committee, which started with Grey and Wanda Evans, has grown with the addition of Judy Williams and Louise Tardif. The group has also had to change locations from The Hut, which used to host the annual bingo event, to the Galt Cafeteria.“It was too crowded,” Grey said, wanting the participants to have some room to move. When they made the move to Galt last year, they packed the cafeteria and hope for a similar turnout this year.“There are lots of people stepping up,” Grey said.According to Grey, Bishop’s University students will be at the event to lend a hand. There will also be helpers from local schools, and Lennoxville borough councillor Jennifer Garfat is expected to stop by and pitch in as well.“It’s a big event and it takes a lot of man hours,” Grey explained.Doors open at noon on Sunday.Grey said the event is open to all ages and fun for the whole family. There will be a variety of activities including the popular spinning wheel and fairy drop. The bingo will start at 1:30 p.m.sharp with one child and one adult winner each round.Grey credited support from the community for the Prom Fairies’ ability to continue with its mission of providing a stress free prom night for students in financial difficulty.“I’ve never seen a community step up to investment to establish a Mother's Education Program in the region. The project aims to assist mothers in resuming their studies in conciliation with their family responsibilities. This allows them to network with other moms who are in similar situations, as well as to have access to a teacher who guides them through their education profile. The goal of the mothers' education program in Estrie is to promote the return to school and labor market integration of mothers in the region. This initial investment will allow for the completion of the first phase of the program, which has two components, academic and entrepreneurial, and includes workshops on socio-professional, parental or psychosocial themes. While promoting the graduation of mothers, the program also aims to promote the educational success of children and to meet the needs of families in the territory. For more information about how to get involved with the project, visit the Richmond youth employment centre website at http://cjerichmond.qc.ca/portfolio/maman-futee-2.By David Suzuki The fossil fuel era must end, or it will spell humanity’s end.The threat isn’t just from pollution and accelerating climate change.Rapid, wasteful exploitation of these valuable resources has also led to a world choked in plastic.Almost all plastics are made from fossil fuels, often by the same companies that produce oil and gas.Our profligate use of plastics has created swirling masses in ocean gyres. It’s worse than once thought.New research concludes that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is 16 times larger than previously estimated, with 79,000 tonnes of plastic churning through 1.6 million square kilometres of the North Pacific. That’s larger than the area of Quebec — and it continues to grow! Researchers say if we don’t clean up our act, the oceans will have more plastics by weight than fish by 2050.The Ocean Cleanup Foundation commissioned the study, published in Nature, based on a 2015 expedition using 30 vessels and a C-130 Hercules airplane to look at the eastern part of the patch.According to a CBC article, researchers estimate that the patch holds 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, much of it broken down into microplastics less than half a centimetre in diameter. They also found “plastic bottles, containers, packaging straps, lids, ropes and fishing nets,” some dating from the late 1970s and into the ’80s and ’90s, and large amount of debris from the 2011 tsunami in Fukushima, Japan. When plastics break down into smaller pieces, they’re more difficult to clean up, and marine animals often ingest the pieces, which is killing them in ever-increasing numbers.Larger pieces can entangle marine animals, and bigger animals often ingest those, too.The North Pacific patch isn’t unique.Debris accumulates wherever wind and ocean conditions and Earth’s rotation create ocean gyres, including the North Pacific, North Atlantic, South Pacific, South Atlantic and Indian Ocean. There’s also one in the Arctic Ocean, although it isn’t a gyre, but an “accumulation zone,” where water from warmer areas sinks as it cools. As the 5 Gyres organization points out, plastics are everywhere, not just in the gyres. It says the idea of a floating island of garbage is a misconception: “In the ocean, plastic is less like an island, and more like smog.” Although some of the plastic comes from ships, most is washed from land into the seas via runoff, rivers and wind.Scientists are conducting research into ways of cleaning up some ocean plastic, but say the only way to adequately address the problem is to stop it at its source.Marcus Eriksen, 5 Gyres co- founder and research director, told CBC that governments need to implement policies to get manufacturers to clean up their acts, “And make smarter products and think of the full life cycle; stop making something that, when it becomes waste, becomes a nightmare for everyone.” Fossil fuels and the products derived from them have made life easier, but at what cost? We’ve only been using plastics since the 1950s, and our excessive fossil fuel use is also a relatively recent phenomenon.Putting plastics in the recycling bin isn’t the only answer either.Low fossil fuel prices and lack of profitable markets for recycled materials means a lot of plastic doesn’t get recycled, and it doesn’t biodegrade. We don’t have to stop using fossil fuels and producing fossil-fuel-derived plastics overnight, but we can’t continue to regard the industry as the backbone of our economies and ways of life, and we must stop being so wasteful. As individuals, we can help reduce the amounts of plastic waste in the oceans and on land by eschewing single- use items like plastic bags, drink containers, straws and excessively packaged items; by avoiding clothing made with plastic microfibers and products containing microbeads; and by choosing reusable containers or disposables made from other materials, such as aluminum, that are more likely to be recycled.Be wary of compostable plastics.Although made from plant materials, they require large industrial facilities to break them down. The real solution is to buy less stuff in the first place, reduce waste, conserve energy and shift to cleaner, renewable power sources and product materials. It’s past time to take pollution, climate change and waste seriously.David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Opening to the Spirit Today’s word: Universal By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) I am a folk music fan, and have many memories of festivals spent wandering from tent to tent listening to musicians share songs that promoted peace and harmony. One piece that immediately came to mind when we chose this word came from a Canadian named Buffy Ste.Marie.Her ballad, The Universal Soldier, became a key element of the peace movement in the sixties. She did, however, pay a price as she was blacklisted on American radio for many years afterward. The song spoke of how each soldier from every country shares some responsibility for the actions of war.The word universal, for me, means that all of us, from different ethnicities, cultures, religions or or other distinctions, shares a common humanity and also a common responsibility to the planet. We are far more alike than we are different.Too often it is easy to blame “the other” for all of society's problems. This frees individuals to hold back, remain inactive, and simply point the finger of blame elsewhere. This attitude may protect people from guilt feelings but does nothing to contribute to a new world of hope and peace. If we continue to wait for change from someone else, perhaps it may never come.We have a universal responsibility to helkp each other, speak out for the less fortunate, and change our world for the better.2) How did we get the universe into such a small word?My first thoughts when this word was chosen were things like universal remote control and universal insurance coverage.I was looking down when I should have been looking up.A few days ago a good friend and I were driving home from a dinner out of town. The night was clear and we stopped at a hiking trail to look up at the night sky.Soon our vision was filled with stars. The word universal should mean vast, expanding, mysterious, and filled with velvet blackness. It is dizzying and humbling to feel our place in the world in relation to the stars. With a universal perspective we are oh, so small but our souls are joined with dazzling lightness.3) What part of our practices, our customs and our beliefs are universal and what parts are unique to each person, culture or organization? One of the keys to success in the era of industrialization was to create objects of universal appeal so that they could be mass produced , thus creating economies of scale and vast profits for the manufacturers.Still today a group of colour specialists meet once a year to determine what the most popular colours will be in sixteen months from now. Then the marketers busy themselves convincing retailers that these particular colours will have mass if not universal appeal. All of this leads to a certain scepticism regarding so called universality.I recently listened to an interview of someone who was encouraging us to abandon fashion altogether and voluntarily opt for a standard jumpsuit to be worn for all occasions.Although the idea of discouraging excess consumerism in the fashion industry was appealing I just couldn’t see myself dressed like all my neighbours day in, day out.Somehow the idea makes my heart sink. The post-modern age brings us a deeper appreciation for diversity.Human beings are not stamped out of assembly lines. We each bring unique qualities and life experiences that add to the flavour of the soup.Rather than striving for universality I would be quite happy learning to better accommodate and appreciate our differences. One sleepless night last month I happened to turn to the Winter Paralympics of 2018.Now that was a celebration of diversity and the capacity of the human spirit to overcome adversity! Truly inspiring. It made my heart soar. One word, three voices this time - now it's your turn to reflect: What does the word Universal mean to you?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley.Sherbrooke creates Women’s Advisory Committee Record Staff SHERBROOKE The women’s advocacy group PÉPINES and the Sherbrooke Feminist Collective are proud to announce the decision by the city of Sherbrooke to create an advisory subcommittee on the status of women in the city. The creation of this consultative body will help the city develop expertise concerning the needs and realities of women living in the area, to encourage the participation of women and their interests in municipal politics, and to better target and reinforce the city’s actions in matters likely to influence the living conditions of women.Marie-Danielle Larocque, spokesperson for the Sherbrooke Feminist Collective, pointed out the volunteer work of citizens involved in the Collective for the Advancement of Women 's Rights in Sherbrooke over the last year, from the adoption of an sexually neutral or inclusive drafting policy to the creation of an advisory body that takes into account feminist issues in the City of Sherbrooke. The Collective submitted a motion to create an advisory body in November of last year, supported by 220 citizens and 27 local and regional organizations. The importance of cities in terms of organizing and providing services to the public is intensifying in the context of Bill 122 that recognizes municipalities as local governments. The City of Sherbrooke, through its new Advisory Committee on Women's Issues, is invited to recognize the principle of gender equality and to contribute to equality between women and men in local governance.Évelyne Beaudin, Chair of the Social and Community Development Committee and former President of PÉPINES, welcomed the creation of a women's advisory committee, said "Tonight is the culmination of a long-term citizen initiative that is finally taking shape.Women have mobilized to demand from their elected representatives a democratic space where they can express themselves and be heard. The women's committee will have a broad mandate that will allow it to express opinions on all municipal government activities." Costs force revision of Magog Downtown Revitalization plans Record Staff MAGOG As part of the revitalization of its downtown area, Magog City Council has agreed to extend the mandate of the firm Pluritec Consulting Engineers to review plans and specifications for the project as soon as possible. In September 2017, Council refused bids received in the call for tenders for the contract for the revitalization of the downtown core. This decision was made because the lowest bid exceeded the amount allocated to the project.Mayor Vicki-May Hamm explained that "in light of this information, our teams have analyzed each item in the plans and specifications in order to find less expensive solutions, without distorting the project or the initial concept,” she says.“This exercise led us to make the decision not to include the development of the Parc des Braves in the first phase of the project.Options such as the belvedere at the corner of Sherbrooke and Principale streets and that of Grosse-Pomme are also excluded for the moment. We have also explored other choices of materials and street furniture. The firm Pluritec now is charged with coming up with a version of plans and specifications based on these new parameters." Next steps of the project • Summer-autumn 2018: revision of plans and specifications • Autumn 2018: presentation of new plans and specifications • Winter 2019: call for tenders from contractors • Winter 2019: awarding the contract • Spring 2019: work begins A detailed timeline will be released once the contract has been awarded. With plans and specifications in the process of being revised, signs illustrating the visual perspectives of the future downtown that had been set up on Principale St, will be removed shortly. Page 8 Friday , April 6, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record CIUSSS de l’Estrie CHUS Health woes continue with decrease in services in Magog, Potton and Stanstead On Tuesday, April 3, The Mem- phremagog Watchdog for Health Services Committee held a press conference in Potton at the Town Hall with the purpose being to deplore the decrease of health services in Magog, Potton and Stanstead.Jean-Guy Gingras, President, Philippe Dutil, Mayor of Stanstead and Jacques Marcoux, Mayor of Potton were all in attendance and took turns speaking. With over 90 in attendance, those gathered attested to the decrease in services in Potton that they have suffered since the death of Dr.Jean- Louis Arseneau in November of 2014 who, to date, has not yet been replaced. The three and a half year wait with no replacement found has left many of Dr.Arseneau’s patients in limbo and suffering desperately seeking a solution to their medical needs.Although the CIUSSS de L’Estrie CHUS has made some efforts to find a doctor, according to Mayor Jacques Marcoux, the efforts made have not been given the priority necessary or the urgency in finding a permanent solution.“For example,” stated Marcoux, “the last medical graduates in Sherbrooke were not even informed of the availability of a position at the CLSC in Man- sonville. We currently have three physicians practicing here on a part-time basis which is equivalent to 1.2 full-time physicians.” With two of these three doctors likely to retire shortly, Potton residents will again find themselves in a situation similar to what Dr.Arseneau’s patients have been living since his death. This poses a serious threat to the health care of citizens in the rural community where services are vital and much needed.More recently, the social worker for senior services support program has been seconded from the CLSC in Man- sonville and attached to the GMF in Magog. This toppled with the fact that the Physiotherapist position has been removed from the organizational chart of the CLSC and that frequently the nurses services are needed in Magog and thus patient appointments in Potton cancelled; all of these adverse realities are negatively impacting services. The Township of Potton and the surrounding municipalities are happy with and have been encouraged to rely on the CLSC services in Mansonville and they want to keep this important health service available. It is important to note that when the CLSC came to Potton, many residents took a drastic change in believing that to keep the service close by, it had to be used and accepted and many had faith and did just that.Files were transferred and new medical support and bonds were made with the local doctors and staff.Ms.Gauthier, Executive Director of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie CHUS, has more than once stated publicly that the CLSC’s of Potton and Stanstead were not threatened with closure. While this is somewhat reassuring, on the other hand, the decrease in services and staff is not! “As mayor of the Township of Potton,” said Marcoux, “I invite the management of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie CHUS to call upon us for help. The provincial law regarding municipal competencies specifies in article 91 that a municipality can grant an aid to the exploitation of a health facility.” Many feel that the CIUSSS de l’Estrie CHUS has, in the past, encouraged and emphasized the need for the population to have a voice and to be a part of the discussion. If today’s gathering was any indication, the population is speaking and it is time for a solution to be found.“I wish to remind the public that the CIUSSS de l’Estrie CHUS preaches a population approach focused on the development of communities,” concluded Mayor Marcoux.“The CLSC Mansonville situation, in my opinion, goes against this approach.” Mable Hastings The Scoop Jacques Marcoux, Mayor of Potton COURTESY Follow The Sherbrooke Record on Facebook and Twitter! sherbrookerecord @recordnewspaper The Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction, Vermont has announced that country singer Billy Curring- ton will grace the Coca-Cola Grandstand on Sunday, September 2, 2018, as part of their lineup of this year’s edition of the fair. The tickets are going on sale this morning (April 6) at 10 a.m.Fans of his music won’t want to miss the chance to see Currington live and in concert. The sea- and beach-loving singer has made a name for himself with songs that simply make you smile and feel good.Songs such as ‘Good Directions,’ ‘We Are Tonight,’ and ‘People Are Crazy’ are just three examples of his relaxed style. The platinum selling, Grammy, ACM, and CMA nominated singer Currington is well known for his high-energy live shows. He always gives the audience what they want and leaves them feeling like they’ve been attending a mega party.Currington quickly exploded onto the country scene after the debut of his first self-titled album and established himself as a favourite entertainer with country music fans.Currington celebrated his 11th chart topper with ‘It Don’t Hurt Like It Used To’ in late 2016.‘Wake Me Up’ is the last and fifth single of his sixth studio album Summer Forever released in 2015.Summer Forever was a well-balanced album as Currington took listeners on a vivid journey over the course of 12 songs. It has been a winning collection of songs that became a summer soundtrack for many.‘Wake Me Up,’ ‘Jonesin,’ and the lifting ‘Nowhere Town’ made us sing along while ‘Do I Make You Wanna,’ ‘Sweet Love,’ and ‘Good Night’ were songs that we associated with a first date, first kiss, or first anything.Summer is always about feeling good, and Summer Forever showcased and conveyed that emotion to the extreme. The strong country theme was maintained while incorporating a laid back but groovy tempo.“For me, there’s three things that it’s got to do for me,” Currington said in his album bio.“It’s either got to make me laugh or the song has got to make me want to make love, or it’s got to make me want to dance. If it doesn’t do any of those things, I’ll pass. It’s got to move me, whether I’ve heard it from other writers or I write it myself. The best song always wins, no matter who the writer was or the publisher. To be honest, I never even look at who wrote it.I always just focus on the song.If it moves me the right way, then that’s what we’re going with.” This explains his style, the songs he decides to record as well as his personality. It also explains why this album was refreshing, and combined with Curring- ton’s standout voice, each song was memorable and stood out on its own.His talent as an artist gave him a solid career in country music, which includes 10 No.1 singles.Billy Currington was born in Savannah, Georgia, on November 19, 1973, raised in Rincon, Georgia, and currently lives in Savannah, Georgia (while he spends his winter in the South. He has four sisters (Lexie, Ann, Kim, and Kellie) and two brothers (Charles and Jason). When he was one-and-a-half years old, his mother, Donna, married Laurie (Larry) Currington, whose surname he adopted. When he was a junior in Effin- gham County High School (Springfield, Georgia), Currington auditioned for a spot at Opryland, the country music theme park located in Nashville.Failing the audition, after high school he moved to Nashville to pursue his career in country music. His first stint did not last too long, and he later sang for a bar named Cavalier Country Club in Georgia. In Nashville, Currington also worked for a concrete company, and as a personal trainer. One of the clients he worked with as a personal trainer led Currington to recording demo tapes, as well as writing songs. He eventually had cuts by George Strait, Tracy Byrd, and Marty Raybon.Billy Currington signed to Mercury Records in 2003.His self-titled debut album was released the same year. The first single released was ‘Walk a Little Straighter’ about his relationship with his alcoholic stepfather, including a chorus that Currington wrote when he was 12 years old.The song went on to No.8 that year on the Hot Country Songs chart and established Currington as a major country performer in Nashville. He has released six studio albums for the label: Billy Currington (2003), Doin’ Somethin’ Right (2005), Little Bit of Everything (2008), Enjoy Yourself (2010), We Are Tonight (2013), and Summer Forever (2015).These six albums have produced 18 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts, including 11 No.1 hits: ‘Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right’, ‘Good Directions’, ‘People Are Two’ and his own non-album single ‘Tangled Up’, for a total of 20 top 40 hits.Setting a new record in August 2017 with his No.1 single ‘Do I Make You Wanna’, Currington is the only country music artist in Billboard Country Airplay history to have a song in the No.1 spot gain an audience of nearly 9,500,000 over another country music artist’s song in the No.2 spot. His Canadian and U.S.television and film industry, has been tapped to lead a digital revolution at CBC/Radio- Canada, becoming the first woman in the organization’s history to be named president and chief executive.Tait, who will officially begin her five- year term at the public broadcaster in the summer, called the position a dream job during a Tuesday morning news conference on Parliament Hill alongside Heritage Minister Melanie Joly.Tait said she wants the broadcaster to increasingly think digital in order to deal with the ongoing disruption across the broadcast industry — a symptom of evolving technology and consumption habits that allow consumers to access content anywhere and any time. The CBC needs to remain relevant to the many audiences it serves, she added, calling on the Crown corporation to be an inclusive storyteller for Indigenous Peoples, women, newcomers and LGBTQ communities, as well as a creator of quality local content.“CBC/Radio-Canada, along with public broadcasters around the world, are under significant competitive pressure,” Tait said.“In order for public broadcasters to survive and to flourish, we must flourish on the services, news and programming that most connect with our public — not just as one audience, but as many audiences. This is, after all, the power of digital.” Tait didn’t provide many additional details of the changes she hopes to see at the public broadcaster. She said she had some ideas about the direction she wanted the CBC to take, but first wanted to talk with outgoing president Hubert Lacroix and other executives.Tait, 60, is no stranger to the CBC.She is a former president of Salter Street Films that produced a CBC mainstay, “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” and more recently saw a company she co-founded, iThentic, partner with the CBC to create a 10-part, online series. Her appointment was supported by industry groups like the Canadian Media Producers Association, who said Tait is “not afraid to innovate” and should keep the CBC “relevant and connected” to younger audiences.Daniel Bernhard, executive director of the advocacy group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, said he was optimistic about Tait’s tenure, but needed to wait and see how she changes the CBC.The chairman of the committee that recommended Tait and others said she was the more audacious of the names that were put forward.Tom Clark, a former journalist, said Tait talked about some innovative and achievable ideas to implement at the public broadcaster and showed an understanding of the CBC and the challenges it faces.“She got not only who the CBC was and what it means to the country, but she also got the extent of the challenges — and challenges is a small word for a really big problem,” Clark said.“The reimagination of the national public broadcaster at a time when broadcasting is disappearing is a monumental task. She got both sides of the equation right.” Tait’s appointment is the latest in a series of moves the Liberal government has made at the public broadcaster that began in 2016, when it boosted funding to the CBC by $675 million over five years. The first tranche of money, about $75 million, moved last year. This year, the funding doubled to $150 million, a level that will continue through to April 2021.Joly said the CBC has been investing the money “bit by bit.” But the union at the CBC has raised concerns that the money, partly tied to boosting local content, has largely gone to outside production companies like the ones Tait led.The Canadian Media Guild (which also represents unionized workers at The Canadian Press) worries the new money from the federal government wasn’t a reinvestment in the CBC so much as spending on companies producing CBC programming.Jonathan Spence, the union’s branch president for CBC/Radio-Canada, said he hoped the new board and chief executive would rethink how the extra federal dollars were being spent.“Our concern is that if we continue to see increasing amounts of money going towards the independent production community, that may reflect a priority over local news and local programming,” he said.Pressed on the issue, Tait said that producing local content would be central in everything the CBC does. The board of directors is also receiving a makeover. On Tuesday, the Liberals announced the appointment of three new directors, and named Michael Gold- bloom, an academic and former journalist, as chairman of the board. The government launched an overhaul last year of how members of the board of directors are chosen — a response to complaints that the selection process was open to political interference and did not reflect Canada’s diversity.“The CBC is at a turning point and we have the right management team, the right board to ultimately seize the opportunities that are out there,” Joly said. We must do something before it is too late.— Need Help Dear Need Help: I’m so sorry you’re going through this, and I can tell you’re at a point of desperation. It’s painful, scary and frustrating to feel as though you’re at the mercy of a family member’s addiction and mental illness. But you do not have to be.It’s time to take back your home and ensure the safety of your wife.Your stepdaughter poses a threat to your wife’s safety, and this constitutes an emergency, so contact the authorities to remove her from the house (again). For further guidance, call the National Alliance on Mental Illness HelpLine (800-950-6264).Dear Annie: Your response to “We Deserve Happiness” was good for some situations but may have missed one serious reason a widow’s adult children might object to his new relationship with her.“Mom” may be suffering from the early or middle stages of dementia. These symptoms can be very well-hidden from new people in a person’s life, but adult children would be very much aware of the progression of the disease and would be right to be protective of their parent’s well-being.My mom suffered with vascular dementia for 10 years before recently passing. She was very good at hiding her symptoms, even with some family members, and faking her familiarity with a person or situation, giving outward appearances that she was just fine.In reality, her disease was progressing, and she confided to my brother and me that her brain was just not working as it used to.We had to keep a close and protective eye on her, especially when new people came into the picture, because of the high risk of someone’s taking advantage of her sweet and giving nature — and several did try.— Dawn Dear Dawn: I am so sorry for your loss.I would never discourage children from protecting their parent in such a situation.Bless you for looking out for your mom, just as she once looked out for you.Dear Annie: My husband and I are in our 60s and now both retired.About 18 months ago, I picked up his cellphone by mistake.(We had very similar phones at the time.) I discovered he was texting a former coworker who is an attractive 30-something divorcee and who, when I first met her, introduced herself as my husband’s “work girlfriend.” The texts were sent early in the morning while he was still in bed.I saw he had sent her texts saying he hoped she had a special and lovely day, with hearts and kissy-face emoticons. Her replies had the same emoticons.I recalled that I had been wondering why he was getting messages all night long and always had his phone by his side.I hadn’t questioned it, because I completely trusted him.Let me also mention that when he was still working, there were times when just the two of them were assigned to work together remotely. He says nothing ever happened. When confronted about the messages, he admitted he had a strong attraction to her but insisted nothing physical had ever happened between them.He said the words he used in his messages were merely “terms of endearment” and he was only trying to encourage her because she was going through a rough patch at work.I reminded him that I was, too, but never once did he use those terms with me or send me kissy-face encouraging messages.Matter of fact, he’d tell me to shut up when I was talking to him about my work issues. He did tell me, though, that she had already broken up two marriages.(Why would he tell me this?) After I discovered the messages, I asked him to stop contact with her, and he promised he would, but a few months later I discovered they were still messaging — which he denied, even though I had proof of it.This was all crushing to me at the time because I never, for even a moment, thought my husband would cheat on me.We were solid. My husband is very involved with the church, which makes this all the more unusual. There is so much more to this that I’m not including, Annie.Am I just being paranoid, as he claims? Can this all be just coincidental, as he claims? Is he still having an emotional affair with this person?I told him initially that I’d leave him if I found he was still in contact with her.I told him he needed to choose, and he keeps telling me I’m his one and only love.I think the only reason he’s still with me is his fear of losing touch with our children.I feel old and fat and ugly and used.Am I right?— Suspicious Dear Suspicious: No one can make you feel old, fat and ugly without your consent.Trust in a marriage is everything. If you feel that you have lost trust in your husband, it is time to seek counseling. It could be just an innocent friendship between two co-workers, or it could be more (and he’s giving more and more reason to believe it is more). But the most important thing is to address what is going on in your mind.If you are living with a feeling of suspicion that is affecting your self-esteem, you need to seek professional help.Once you begin to feel good about yourself, you can then address the issues with your husband with a clear mind.Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com.Addiction affecting household Dear Annie SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018 Think matters through from beginning to end. This is a year of questioning and making choices that could change the way you live from this point on.Cover your back and make your decisions based on what’s best for you, not on what someone else wants you to do.ARIES (March 21-April 19) — An untimely decision will leave you at a loss.Someone you are close to will offer insight into what you should do.Protect your position, reputation and future.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Participation will do you good.Listen to what’s being said, as it will spark an idea that will encourage you to take on a project that could alter how or where you live.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Be careful how you spend and handle your cash.Get your financials in order and plan a new strategy that will help you save money.Don’t let anyone take advantage of your generosity.CANCER (June 21-July 22) — Partnerships will need a little tender, loving care.Don’t reject something out of hand before you hear and understand what’s being offered.Being accommodating will allow you to make the changes you desire, too.LEO (July 23-Aug.22) — Listen to the voice of reason. You will have plenty of ideas, but not all of them will be feasible.Someone with more experience will offer suggestions that you should consider.VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) — Family, friends, children and loved ones will all play important roles in what you decide to do.Visit people who bring you comfort and joy.Romance will improve your life.LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.23) — Changes at home will not go smoothly. An open dialogue must not be allowed to end up being one-sided.Don’t hesitate to speak up or to listen to others’ suggestions.SCORPIO (Oct.24-Nov.22) — Get involved in events that will give you the chance to mingle with people who can share information about your ancestry. You could learn something! The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, April 6, 2018 Page 23 Your Birthday FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 2018 The abnormal is abnormally tough By Phillip Alder William James, the first person to teach a psychology course in the United States, said, “To study the abnormal is the best way of understanding the normal.” Maybe that applies to bridge. Most deals follow a well-known path, but occasionally one that is abnormal appears. In this deal, South is in four spades.West leads the diamond six, and declarer wins with dummy’s ace. What happens after that?South’s two-spade rebid promises at least a six-card suit (and in Standard, a minimum opening). If playing two-over- one, North might continue with two no- trump, over which South should bid three clubs. That would steer North away from three no-trump (which would not do well if East were to lead a diamond).South has four potential losers: one spade, two hearts and one diamond. However, if he can draw trumps, he can run the clubs to take at least 10 tricks. After winning the first trick, declarer will run the spade queen.West is in, but what does he do next?West must be guided by his partner’s signal at trick one. Here, East should see the advantage of a heart shift. So, East should signal with a discouraging diamond two. Then West ought to find the heart switch. If East plays an encouraging diamond 10, West might cash his diamond queen at trick three. If so, East should drop the two, his lowest from a remaining odd number of diamonds. Then West might shift to a heart; but he is more likely to continue diamonds, influenced by that trick-one signal.CROSSWORD Across 1 Disagreement 5 Her first speaking role was in MGM’s “Anna Christie” 10 Unlikely 14 Fashion designer Rabanne 15 Cold shoulder or hot corner 16 Elizabeth of “Jacob’s Ladder” 17 Wee bit 18 It might be uncured 19 Plant with hips 20 Salute in an old orbiter?23 Arizona neighbor 24 Former SETI funder 25 Pokémon Go finder: Abbr.28 Spa supplies 30 African megalopolis 32 Nonstick kitchen product 35 Stadium scene after a big win?39 Normandy river 40 Foil firm 41 It borders both the Missouri and the Mississippi rivers 42 Fishing parties?44 Early Disney productions 45 __ del Carmen, Mexico 46 Distant beginning?48 Photog’s choice 49 Org.offering shelter for some homeless 53 It merged with Chevron in 2005 57 Edward Scissorhands’ syndrome?59 Chain part 62 1975 Pulitzer winner for criticism 63 Old film dog 64 Catty reply 65 __ attack 66 Flit 67 Cat catchers 68 Seriously reduce 69 Prizes in los Juegos Olímpicos Down 1 Bombards with e-junk 2 Deck alternative 3 Nut with a cap 4 Nonsense 5 Iberian peninsula territory 6 Economist Smith 7 Puerto __ 8 Half an Ivy cheer 9 Dodges of old 10 Agile 11 Uncle on “Seinfeld” 12 Advantages for job seekers 13 Novelist Rita __ Brown 21 “He’s mine, __ am his”: “Coriolanus” 22 Stand snack 25 Boy toy?26 Lurk 27 Milk sources 29 Prairie skyline feature 31 Buff 32 Name on collectible cards 33 Bell or whistle?34 At hand, poetically 36 Old French coin 37 It’s often skipped 38 Cryptozoologist’s quarry 43 Wicked slice 47 Conjunction in a German article 50 Buds, slangily 51 Band of intrigants 52 Concert setting 54 Romero who played The Joker 55 Dog in Orbit City 56 Exams for future attys.57 Susie-shirts tongue-twister link 58 Hosp.tests 59 Little demon 60 Sells-shells tongue-twister link 61 Bit of cowspeak SUNDAY, APRIL 8, 2018 It’s time to reflect on the past and consider how best to move forward.Taking on more responsibility will be daunting mentally, but physically, you will be able to push your way through any situation you face.Trust in your ability, and balance your lifestyle to ease stress.ARIES (March 21-April 19) — You have more options than you realize.Open up to someone who can offer you a different perspective regarding the changes you face or the decisions you must make.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Socialize, get together with friends or relatives, or pitch in and volunteer your help.Your dedication and determination will draw attention and boost your popularity.Romance is featured.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — A change of plans will cause a problem. If someone backs out of a deal, make sure you aren’t left paying for him or her.Be blunt and collect what’s owed to you.CANCER (June 21-July 22) — Consider how to best spend your time.Helping outsiders is admirable, but you should first take care of any work that needs to be done closer to home.LEO (July 23-Aug.22) — Personal changes can be made, but don’t try to alter what someone else does.If you want the freedom to do as you please, you must offer the same in return.VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) — Attend functions that will add to your knowledge and experience.Expanding an interest and sharing it with a loved one will bring you closer together.Physical improvements can be made.LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.23) — Impulse will be your downfall.Acting on an emotional whim or getting entrenched in someone else’s melodrama will bring you down and cost you emotionally and financially.SCORPIO (Oct.24-Nov.22) — Emotional outbursts must be kept to a minimum.Veer away from anyone displaying erratic behavior.Put your heart into something that will add to your stability.SAGITTARIUS (Nov.23-Dec.21) — You may need to make some financial adjustments if you want to maintain your standard of living.Think twice before you spend money on something you don’t need.CAPRICORN (Dec.22-Jan.19) — Concentrate on your personal relationships and make an effort to improve your living arrangements.Stick close to home and the people you love.Hard work will result in personal gain.AQUARIUS (Jan.20-Feb.19) — Someone will withhold information that can make a difference to your earning potential or finances.Don’t count on anyone else to handle your affairs.PISCES (Feb.20-March 20) — You’ll be subject to scrutiny if you are wishy-washy when explaining your position.Take matters seriously and be clear about your intentions before you commit to anything. Page 24 Friday , April 6, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record ASK THE DOCTORS By Robert Ashley, M.D.Dear Doctor: Much is said about calcium and vitamin D, but what about magnesium? As I understand it, that’s a crucial part of the bone-building equation.Should people be taking magnesium supplements?Dear Reader: The element magnesium is necessary for bone health, yes, but also for normal heart function and nerve conduction and to maintain a proper calcium balance in the body.Notably, although it’s found in leafy vegetables, nuts, fish and shellfish, soy and cereals, magnesium levels in our foods appear to be slowly decreasing. One reason may be the overutilization of fields, leading to depletion of magnesium in the soil.A survey conducted in 1999 and 2000 found that 79 percent of American adults do not meet the recommended daily allowance for magnesium.Magnesium, which is stored in the bone, is very similar in atomic structure to calcium, and deficiencies can lower the body’s calcium levels. This happens in several ways.First, low levels of magnesium impair the release of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which raises calcium levels when they fall too low.Second, low magnesium levels actually block the function of PTH.And third, low levels decrease the formation of the active form of vitamin D, also needed for healthy bones.Further, low magnesium causes an inflammatory process in the bone, which leads to bone breakdown.Animal studies show that rats fed magnesium-deficient diets, even in the short term, have more brittle and fragile bones than animals fed a normal diet. This happens because of decreased bone formation and increased bone breakdown. In humans, deficiencies can develop among people who don’t absorb the element due to gastrointestinal disease, chemotherapy or alcoholism.Accordingly, data from the well- known Framingham Heart Study found that people with higher dietary intake of magnesium had greater bone density. As for whether a magnesium supplement will help decrease the risk of osteoporosis, however, the data are definitely not conclusive.Although a 2010 study found that postmenopausal women who took 1,830 milligrams of extra magnesium daily for 30 days had fewer markers for bone breakdown than those who didn’t take extra magnesium, most studies assess the impact of only dietary magnesium.A notable 2016 study combined data from 12 different studies (involving 109,564 people), assessing the risk of bone density and fracture in relation to magnesium intake. The authors found a slight increase in hip bone density among those with higher magnesium intake, but no increase in spinal bone density. If you have a good dietary intake of magnesium and if you don’t drink heavily or have intestinal or kidney disease, you’re unlikely to benefit from taking a magnesium supplement. The best thing you can do for your bones is to eat a diet high in magnesium and calcium; get outside so your body can produce vitamin D; and exercise.Robert Ashley, M.D., is an internist and assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.Exercise, sunshine and diet key to high magnesium intake "]
