Record Staff Two motorists were injured in separate incidents after a section of road collapsed early Thursday morning in Town of Brome Lake.Quebec provincial police spokesperson Sgt.Aurélie Guindon said the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m.on Fulford Rd, which runs parallel to Highway 10.The road's drainage ditch flooded due to heavy rains, splitting the street into two parts. The hole on Fulford Road is approximately 3.5 metres deep and 6 metres across, police say.The two vehicles fell into the hole, Guindon explained. Both drivers were transported to hospital. The first, a man in his twenties, was treated for minor injuries. The second, a woman in her seventies, had more serious injuries to her lower body, although she is expected to survive. The road was completely closed to traffic early Thursday and municipal workers are on site, blocking the road to make sure that no other vehicles suffer the same fate.According to the Ville de Lac Brome, the road should be repaired in time for weekend traffic.By Matthew McCully While it was off to a wet start, by Thursday afternoon the festival site was drying out and performers and visitors were stretching out in the sun to enjoy a variety of food, music and culture from around the world for the 21st annual Festival des Traditions du Monde.Over 150 different shows, workshops and events will take place at the festival throughout the weekend on nine different stages. There are also mini restaurants set up, offering the flavours of 17 different countries, and 70 different artists and craftspeople selling clothing, art and other items from around the world. The full schedule of events is available on the website at ftms.ca.SEE PHOTO ON PAGE 3 Easily Distracted (2015) is an autobiography by actor/comedian Steve Coogan. If you’ve seen the film, The Trip (2011), or The Trip to Italy (2014), or The Trip to Spain (2017), you know who Steve Coogan is.Fellow peregrinating gastronome, the affable Welsh comedian Rob Brydon, is the ‘nice’ one of the two.In these very popular films, Coogan and Brydon play versions of themselves on restaurant tours, and act out a version of their real-life competitive professional relationship as impersonators – particularly Michael Caine impersonators. The food and scenery are spectacular, and there are plenty of laughs, as they repeatedly try to ‘out-Caine’ each other in Buddy/Road films in which the bud- diehood is just a little bit strained, mostly by the screen version of Coogan’s edginess. That the real-life Coogan is well aware of his reputation as a bit of a bad boy is more than apparent in his book.Recalling a boyhood argument he had with a neighbouring boy about their respective dad’s cars (which the neighbour’s dad’s car won), Coogan reports the following barb: I knew he was right [about the better car].I was tormented. But I had an ace up my sleeve.‘Well,’ I hesitated.‘Your dad has a limp and walks like this.’ I hobbled around the playground. You can see why I’m not on Twitter.Easily Distracted is that rara avis among celebrity autobiographies: it is, indeed, rich in nasty personal attacks, but in this case, almost all of the attacks are against the author.Coogan is certainly not afraid to skewer himself, and manages to be very funny about it at the same time.Structurally, the book is a bit odd.As he played Tristram Shandy in another film, you might expect Coogan to begin his life story with ‘I am born’ (if not ‘I am conceived’ a la Tristram). But no, Part One – roughly one quarter of the book – treats a two-year period when Coogan was in his late forties, before he returns, in Part Two, to his early childhood and adolescence, then, in Part Three, brings us to the present day. This is probably not a Homeric homage, but more likely a reflection of Coogan’s need, perhaps subconscious, to focus the reader’s attention on what he, at least, sees as his greatest successes: not, interestingly, his most famous comic creation, Alan Partridge (a less nasty but equally obtuse Basil Fawlty), but the ‘more important’, and not primarily comedic, Philomena (2013), a film about the tragedy of forced adoption by the Catholic Church in 1950s Ireland, which Coogan co-starred in, and co-wrote.Coogan’s background is Irish, and he was brought up a Catholic in Manchester. Also in Part One, Coogan introduces us to his highly developed social conscience: in 2011 he was one of a few actors and other celebrities who took the British tabloid The News of the World to court – and won - over the phone hacking scandal that eventually spelled the demise of that newspaper.Though even when Coogan is at his most serious, in condemning the immorality of tabloid journalists, he can’t stop making wry jokes: “I wanted to make public the behind-the-scenes behavior of some journalists who think ‘ethics’ is where Page 3 girls with lisps come from”.In Part One of Easily Distracted, you might be excused for thinking you were reading the autobiography of a social activist rather than a Monty Python-in- spired professional comedian. With Part Two, we are on more familiar celebrity autobiography ground: ‘this was my childhood, my parents, my family, my upbringing, and this is how these things helped to shape the artist I became’.Though Parts One and Three (in which Coogan refocuses on his professional career) are more typically titillating, Part Two, treating his growing up in Manchester in the 1960s and 70s, is much more interesting and rewarding.Despite his mature anti-church feelings, there is no escaping his nostalgia for an early life in a traditionally Christian home and community, replete with fondly recalled annual holidays in Ireland.Though now an atheist, Coogan can see in the values instilled in him by his Catholic parents and community the basis for his left- leaning politics. And though now an atheist, he admits to a degree of ambivalence, since, as a child he “once prayed for an Aston Martin in Church”, and now he owns two. Also in Part Two Coogan perfects the technique latent in all autobiographies by people who are not in themselves important historically: placing his own personal world within the larger historical context.Given that it’s Coogan, the results are often memorably funny: In September 1972 eleven Israeli athletes [were] killed at the Munich Olympics. The same year Watergate was unfolding, [and] the Bloody Sunday killings. But more importantly, on 14 October that year, I became the first person in my school to invite girls to my birthday party. In the late 1970s, Coogan was in his mid teens: It was also around this time that nuclear reactors melted on Three Mile Island, Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, and the previous winter of discontent led to the election of Margaret Thatcher, our first female prime minister.More importantly, I put my hand inside a girl’s bra for the first time. The particular juxtaposition of ‘first female prime minister’ and ‘hand inside a girl’s bra’ sounds the keynote of Coogan’s particular brand of acutely self- aware ironic comedy. It’s the stuff that Alan Partridge is made of.Elsewhere, Coogan attributes his remarkable abilities in impersonation to having to resort – in pre-VHS days – to audiotaping episodes of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, and endlessly playing them back and imitating the voices to entertain his extended Irish Catholic family; asserts that mocking people – another Coogan staple – is more simply a particularly British sign of affection; that having being brought up a Catholic meant that he found release and reassurance in the ‘ambiguity’ of Shakespeare, and the ‘difference’ of Blake. He claims that a ‘common denominator of loved British comedy characters’ – a trait that he shares – is that ‘they are all frustrated .they are essentially disappointed with their lives’.He admits to being jealous of the nicer Rob Brydon, and that Brydon may even be the funnier of the two. But, he adds.“I don’t care if people don’t think I’m funny.I’d rather make people think and if they laugh as well, that’s a bonus.” Coogan took his title, Easily Distracted, from a teacher’s assessment in one of his childhood report cards.I think we can see that self-aware ironic comedy at play again there. For Steve Coogan being funny doesn’t mean being distracted at all.- James Wilson Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , Record Staff After several years of unsuccessful breeding attempts with Andean condors, the Granby Zoo has seen the birth of its first hatching a few days ago.The zoo acquired its Andean condor couple in 2010, which had already been united at the San Diego Zoo-Safari Park in 2002.Although the female and male are already aged 18 and 29-years-old, this is the first time they have become parents. These birds are sexually mature at the age of seven and can breed up to 50 years, which is very promising for the future.A camera has been installed in the nest, allowing animal care technicians to keep a constant eye on the family without disturbing them.It is also thanks to this camera that we could distinguish the small crest on the head of the chick, which confirms that it is a male.Andean condors produce only one egg every 2 years, and as they do not build a nest, most of the time it is laid on a ledge of a cliff.Because of the precariousness of the egg, the couple actively participates in brooding, leaving the egg very rarely exposed. At the Granby Zoo, a box with a sandy bottom has been provided as a shelter.Following the recommendations of the Species Survival Plan, all measures have been put in place to promote breeding. Both parents have been tending the egg and If all goes well, the chick will stay with his parents for a period of almost 2 years. The Andean Condor, found all along the west coast of South America, is in danger of extinction in its natural environment. The population is declining because of the ingestion of prey poisoned by pesticides and the loss of habitat, among other things.Specialists who issue breeding recommendations by identifying candidates according to their genetics have identified 21 breeding pairs.Of these 21 couples, only three managed to produce a chick, including that at the Granby Zoo.Reproduction and reintroduction programs in kind have not reversed the decline of the species, so further efforts will be needed to achieve the desired demography. An Andean condor can reach a weight of 15 kilos and a wingspan of more than three meters (ten feet), making it the largest raptor on the planet.! Bike show shines despite the rain By Claudia Villemaire In spite of overcast skies and a few intermittent splashes of rain, the Richmond Fair grounds were resplendent with shiny motorcycles, antique farm tractors and even a wooden thrashing machine dating back to the mid-nine- teen hundreds."I suppose the weather forecast discouraged some visitors but we're very happy with the turnout of both visitors and participants," David Provis, organizer and past president remarked. It was a busy day for spectators - making the rounds of vintage motor bikes dating from the 40s right down to a 'rat' bike replete with jumbled wires, rusty fenders and well-used tires, a motor that looked as though it had seen its best days - but still running - occasionally. The addition of an antique farm tractor pull to the program attracted a new crowd, many seniors who remembered using these tractor models on their own fields. The day was capped with a special menu of barbecued beef and pork with all the fixings prepared by Tammi McGee on the rotisserie she calls Big Bertha followed by an evening a music.Allan Stevens, president of the Eastern Townships Chapter of the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Association only had good things to say about the day's events."We were hoping for more participants for the swap meet, but those who came were well satisfied with their day.Perhaps paid admissions were down a bit, but the weather plays a major role in events like this. All in all, we are well satisfied and already thinking about the next show, scheduled, as usual, for the St.Jean Baptiste weekend next year. Many thanks to everyone, organizers, participants and especially the public who chose this event for their Saturday activity," Stevens said.Proceeds this year will help finance activities at the elementary school in St Felix de Kingsey.Sherbrooke to pilot new housing co-op model By Gordon Lambie Lise Thériault, Provincial Minister responsible for consumer protection and housing was in Sherbrooke on Wednesday to announce a new model of cooperative living that will be launched in Sherbrooke with the help of $3 million in support from the Provincial government.Described as a hybrid of the rental system and condominiums, the new approach will give people the opportunity to buy into a housing co-oper- ative that will return a part of their fees back to them at the end to be used for a future downpayent.“The project we have here is a cooperative where people can have access to property,” Thériault said “Starting from, say, $120,000, a family could buy their 3 .One day when they decide to sell, a portion of the profit will stay with the family who can use that money to get access to their own property, and the other part of the funds will come back to the cooperative.” The first of these projects will be built on Nicholas-Schieb street in the North end of Sherbrooke, although more are planned in other parts of the city and in Waterville in the coming years.“It is a citizen-centered approach to living,” said Léopold Beaulieu, President and CEO of Fondaction, a Quebec-based retirement fund that is contributing to the project.“That is to say a model of shared resources that are managed collectively by a community.” Luc Fortin, Minister of Families and Member of the National Assembly for Sherbrooke, also used the opportunity to announce the details of the new homeowners’ tax credit implemented by the Liberals in their most recent budget.Aimed at lessening the burden on first- time home buyers, the credit offers up to $750 of credit on a maximum of $5,000 of applicable fees. These fees, Fortin explained, do not include the actual value of the home, but rather secondary costs like the welcome tax, notary fees, inspection costs, and moving expenses.“The purchase of a new home is a big, positive step in the life of a family, but it is also often the biggest expense,” Fortin said.“In light of this, we decided to lighten some of that burden on first- time home buyers in the name of increasing Quebeckers’ access to property.” The new tax credit is retroactive to Ja- nuray 1 of 2018.Luc Fortin, Families Minister and Member of the National Assembly for Sherbrooke, standing with Léopold Beaulieu, the Executive Director of Fondaction, a Quebec retirement savings reinvestment fund, Lise Thériault, the Minister responsible for consumer protection and housing, and Jacques Côté, the President of Quebec’s housing cooperative confederation at the announcement of a new model of cooperative housing that will be launched in Sherbrooke.GORDON LAMBIE Three youngsters arrested for robbing cars Supreme Court to scrutinize media source protection in Quebec case By David Suzuki Over the past few months, heat records have broken worldwide. In early July, the temperature in Ouargla, Algeria, reached 51.3 C, the highest ever recorded in Africa! Temperatures in the eastern and southwestern United States and southeastern Canada have also hit record highs. In Montreal, people sweltered under temperatures of 36.6 C, the highest ever recorded there, as well as record-breaking extreme midnight heat and humidity, an unpleasant experience shared by people in Ottawa.Dozens of people have died from heat-re- lated causes in Quebec alone.Europe, Eurasia and the Middle East have also reached all-time record temperatures. In Northern Siberia, along the Arctic coast, the temperature was over 32 C on July 5, much hotter than ever recorded Unusually high temperatures in the Arctic are causing sea ice to melt, exposing more dark sea areas, which absorb more heat than ice, causing feedback loops. Those are exacerbated by melting permafrost releasing more methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. All of it is weakening the polar jet stream, which in turn affects temperatures in mid-latitudes.As U.S.meteorologist and geoscientist Nick Humphrey explains, “The weakening is causing the polar jet to become much wavier, with greater wave ‘breaks’ and blocking patterns where waves sit in the same place for weeks [and] promote extreme weather patterns (extreme cold relative to normal as well as extreme heat, very wet, and drought conditions).” Atmospheric carbon dioxide has spiked to 408 parts per million, global average temperatures have risen 1.8 C since 1880, Arctic ice is declining at 13.2 per cent per decade, sea levels are rising 3.2 millimetres a year on average and it’s all accelerating as we continue to pump more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and destroy more carbon sinks like forests and wetlands.According to NASA, “Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with 16 of the 17 warmest years on record occurring since 2001.Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months.” As equatorial zones heat up, creating drought, water shortages, agricultural losses and inhospitable conditions, we can expect to see more refugees fleeing to cooler areas with better resources.Despite the calamity unfolding before our eyes, many people and organizations still cast doubt on climate science and scientists, and politicians and governments fight against the very measures critical to addressing the crisis and ensuring the planet’s climate remains stable enough for good human health and survival.Although some people argue that climate always changes, NASA scientists explain that evidence of past warming from ice cores, tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs and layers of sedimentary rocks show that “current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming.” We’ve known about the heat-trapping properties of CO2 and other gases since the mid 1800s.Again, NASA points out, “There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.” The reasons we’ve failed to adequately confront the problem have nothing to do with lack of evidence or solutions. We have an abundance of both, but industrial interests and their supporters in media and politics (along with those who have been duped into denial) have actively worked to downplay the problem and hamper progress. In our book Just Cool It!, we outline numerous known and emerging ways for governments, institutions, industry and individuals to resolve the climate crisis. Many solutions are being employed or developed, but not fast enough to forestall catastrophe. In Canada, we have federal and provincial governments hell-bent on expanding fossil fuel infrastructure and development to reap as much profit as possible from a dying industry and to satisfy the vagaries of short election cycles. The fossil fuel industry continues to receive massive subsidies, including a multi-billion-dollar taxpayer bailout for an American pipeline company, while clean energy receives far less support. It’s frightening to contemplate global warming, the changes required to confront it and the consequences we face in the coming years. But stalling solutions and continuing our fossil fuel addiction will only make the inevitable that much worse.David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation.Written with contributions from David Suzuki Supreme Court of Canada will help decide whether a Radio- Canada journalist must reveal her sources for stories about a high-profile corruption investigation. The court agreed Thursday to hear Marie-Maude Denis's challenge of a Quebec Superior Court ruling that she divulge the identities.Marc-Yvan Cote, one of the accused in the criminal probe, asked a judge to halt proceedings against him, alleging that agents of the state had leaked information that would compromise the fairness of his trial. In March, the Superior Court authorized the disclosure of Denis's sources, and she was unsuccessful in appealing the decision. The Supreme Court hearing will delve into legal questions surrounding protection of journalistic sources and freedom of expression in the context of police investigations. As usual, the Supreme Court gave no reason for agreeing to hear the case and no hearing date has been set. Record Staff An explosive device made from chlorine was deposited in the mailbox of a resident of Pasteur St.in Sherbrooke last Thursday. At approximately 9:45 p.m.the device exploded, causing damage to the entrance of the house. The Sherbrooke Police (SPS) have opened an investigation to determine who was behind it.Thanks to images recorded by the resident's surveillance camera, the SPS hopes to find the suspect."For now, the investigation has not led us to arrest anyone or put our finger on the motive. The investigation has only begun, "said SPS spokesperson Martin Carrier. In addition to the bomb in the mailbox, a second device was thrown near the tree on the front of the house, waking the family with two loud noises " After the explosions, police and firefighters went to the scene."There was chlorine splattered on the house and in the entrance. No one was hurt,” added Carrier.Police still have no leads, but the SPS has reason to believe that the crime is directed at a specific person."It happened to him last year. There is no one else in Sherbrooke who has had this kind of problem. It seems that the target was the resident of the place," Carrier said. The SPS also plans to use the camera images to circulate a photo of the suspect and find him.If found, he could be charged with vandalism.Friday , August 10, 2018 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND INTEGRATION PROGRAM Designed to provide adults experiencing adjustment difficulties of a psychological, learning, social, intellectual or physical nature, access to an individualized learning program to become autonomous.Fall Session begins August 29, 2018 New Horizons Adult Education Centre 2365 Galt West, Sherbrooke Call us! 819-566-0250 ext.40001 http://newhorizons.etsb.qc.ca *MUST BE: 20 years of age before July 1, 2018 Mont-Mégantic Observatory funding secured for ?ve years Record Staff The federal and provincial governments have announced their respective commitments to provide five-year funding to the Mont-Mégantic Observatory. While a shower of shooting stars is expected in the coming days, the good news awaited the observatory’s partners that funding for the major research center is now guaranteed for the next five years.Compton-Stanstead MP and Minister of International Development Marie- Claude Bibeau, and D'Arcy McGee MNA and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister Responsible for Advanced Education, David Birnbaum, made the announcement Wednesday alongside Université de Montréal Rector Guy Breton, Laval University’s Vice-Rector of Research, Creation and Innovation, Eugénie Brouillet, Observatory Director and UdeM professor, René Doyon, and the Haut Saint-François Prefect, Robert G.Roy.The federal government has confirmed funding of $500,000 a year for the next five years, while the provincial government is adding $300,000 a year for the same period. The Mont-Mégantic Observatory, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is the result of a partnership between the Université de Montréal and Université de Laval. The Observatory is a unique research and training site: it is the only place in Canada where future astronomers and astrophysicists can be trained with a telescope that is the best in the country.Researchers are also developing cutting-edge observation instruments. For example, one of the four scientific instruments of the James-Webb Space Telescope, to be launched by NASA in 2021, was designed at the Observatory.Marie-Claude Bibeau (3rd from left, with Left to right) Eugénie Brouillet, Vice-Rector, Res - Terry is survived by his brothers Lawrence (Denise) and John (Mariette), and his sister Charlotte O’Donnell (John), as well as nieces and nephews.Born and raised in Windsor Mills in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Terry graduated from St.Patrick’s High School in Sherbrooke and Loyola College (now Concordia University) in Montreal.Terry maintained a life long association with both schools. For more than 40 years, Terry was a member of the St.Patrick’s Academy Old Boys Association.Terry continued to be involved in the Loyola College Alumni following graduation and was the president of the Warriors’ Club.He also coached the Watapekas, a Sunday morning Alumni Hockey League, and the Loyola Grads hockey club.Terry had a career in Human Resources, working for the Bank of Montreal at its Head Office in Old Montreal and sub?sequently as a self?employed employment counsellor.Much of his work centred around his passion for the sport of hockey, from scouting and management to helping many young people live their dreams of playing hockey in Europe or attending prestigious schools while playing hockey. For a number of years Terry ran hockey camps for young women in Stanstead, Quebec to prepare them for competitive team work and scholarships. With a passion for political commentary, clever sardonic humour, and rapier wit, Terry lived a full life, inspiring many people who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.An ardent activist and proud Canadian and Quebecer, Terry played a major role in the Freedom of Choice Movement (a language rights protection group) and later, the Freedom of Choice Party, for which he ran as a candidate for Quebec’s National Assembly in 1981.Terry was fervent in his desire to see Canada remain united and, although completely bilingual, he believed strongly, on constitutional grounds, that French and English?speaking Canadians everywhere in the country should receive services and documents in both official languages. So principled was he in his beliefs that, instead of paying a $6.00 French?only parking ticket, he chose to make a political statement by spending two days in Bordeaux Jail rather than pay the fine after the judge refused to hear his constitutional arguments and he was subsequently convicted in absentia.Visitation will take place at 2 p.m.followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 3 p.m.on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at St.Patrick’s Catholic Church located at 20 Gordon Street in Sherbrooke, Quebec.A celebration of Terry’s life will take place thereafter in St.Patrick’s Church hall.If you wish to express your condolences and/or attend our gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life and to obtain additional information on the Celebration of Terry’s life, please contact: 2018terrycelebration@gmail.com In Memoriam In Memoriam ASK THE DOCTORS By Robert Ashley, M.D.Dear Doctor: I recently read that fast food interferes with a woman’s chances of conceiving. What’s the connection?Dear Reader: Fast food would seem to be an easy fall guy for our current health status: The United States ranks first in the amount of money we spend on healthcare, but 31st in overall longevity. But as much as we’d like to blame a specific industry for our unhealthy habits, the situation is much more complex than that.Further, we as individuals are the ones who, of our own free will, order the burgers, french fries, onion rings, sodas and milkshakes. The study you mentioned looks at different foods and the role they play in pregnancy and fertility. In it, 5,628 pregnant women from New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom were given dietary questionnaires 15 weeks into their pregnancy. The questions had to do with the consumption of fruits, green leafy vegetables, fish and fast food in the month preceding conception.A midwife researcher also asked questions about the time it took for the women to become pregnant.A timespan greater than 12 months was defined as infertility. The study did not find an association between green leafy vegetables or fish and time to pregnancy (TTP).But it did find an association between fruit intake and TTP.Compared to women who ate fruit three times per day, those who ate fruit only one to three times per month had a 19 percent longer TTP and a 29 percent increased rate of infertility.Fast food, which included burgers, french fries, pizza and fried chicken, had an even greater association with TTP delay and infertility.Compared to women who ate fast food four times or more per week, those who ate fast food two to four times per week had an 11 percent shorter TTP and an 18 percent lower infertility rate; and those who ate it less than twice a week had a 21 percent quicker TTP and a 34 percent lower infertility rate.Women who reported no fast food intake had a 24 percent quicker TTP and a 41 percent lower infertility rate, compared to the women who ate it four times or more per week.Among the study’s problems: It was based on dietary recall and thus subject to recall bias. For example, a woman who had difficulty conceiving may have overestimated a factor she believed could have caused a delay in her conception.Further, 90 percent of study participants identified themselves as Caucasian, so the results may not be applicable in a multi-racial society. And lastly, fast food and lack of fruit in the diet may simply be markers of an unhealthy lifestyle. The authors did appear to adjust for this in their study, however. That said, the results are concerning and point to the importance of diet in fertility. Many fast food restaurants have healthier options, and while these are intermixed with unhealthy food, they at least give women a choice.Of course, a better option is going to the market, selecting healthy food and taking the time to prepare it well.Even if there’s no time for the latter steps, major markets now have readymade food that is both healthy and fast.Robert Ashley, M.D., is an internist and assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.Study results point to the importance of diet in fertility Church Services Anglican Presbyterian United Friday, August 10, 2018 Page 19 The Record production@sherbrookerecord.com AYER’S CLIFF - MAGOG Ayer’s Cliff -
