daily press is the evil principle of the modern world, and time will only serve to disclose this fact with greater and greater clearness.Soren Kierkegaard Statistics are out proving crime across Canada is down for the third year in a row and violent crime the lowest in a quarter century.Since those figures originate with law enforcement officials who have a vested interest in keeping them high, we are.most likely doing even better than that.So why is it we have the impression that crime and violence is growing in our society and we must toughen the Young Offenders Act and surrender still more of our civil liberties to protect ourselves from criminals?Well, media must take much of the blame. If 300 million teenage girls walk safely home from school in North America and one is kidnapped, raped and murdered, what will the headlines say the next day?And when all we hear and read about is kidnaps, rapes and murders, what else would we think but that it is prevalent, even predominant.Who's Who By Tadeusz Letarte Nobody, of course, wants to read 300 million stories about teenage girls who walked safely home from school but when we are told that Grandma never locked her door, when she left the house and was not afraid to go out alone at night, we ought to remember that her generation was expected to physically discipline children, and if Grandpa whanged his horse with a whipple-tree for kicking the buggy to pieces, hanged his dog for chasing sheep, that was nobody else’s business. It was only in the 1880s that institutional flogging of women was banned in Canada. And only in the early years of this century did laws against cruelty to women, children and animals have any force.Every hour of every day we can get reports of sex slayings in St.Catharines and a brutal double murder in Los Angeles while Grandma knew very little of Dr.Crippen, and Gilles de Rais is known only to historians. But don’t blame the messenger. One of the most persistent criticisms I have heard of the Record is that it doesn’t carry enough pictures of auto accidents on the front page.Something in us all is fascinated by sex and violence and has been since the days of Gilgamesh and Boewulf. At this writing, Ottawa police believe sportscaster Brian Smith was murdered by someone with a grudge against the media. We can’t have that sort of thing getting about.Where are the close-captioned shows?Q.Why aren’t more programs closed-captioned?The hearing impaired have very few choices.Thank you.— D.C., Racine, Wis.A.The answer to this question, and most questions, lies in economics. It costs money to close-caption a show, and the retums aren't great, comparatively.Q.There's a white man eating on the Maalox antacid commercial who reminds me of the old-time actor Barry Sullivan. Is it him? What is he doing now?— D.D., Aurora, Ill.A.No, because Sullivan has passed over to that place where you don't need antacid tablets.Q.Please help my girifriend and me settle a dispute. She says that David Soul, who played Hutch on “Starsky and Hutch,” committed suicide in the early or mid-'80s.1 disagree. There is a $50 bet on your much anticipated answer.— H.J., Arcata, Calif, ASK DICK KLEINER DICK KLEINER 5 A.You are now a man with means.David is still around, body and Soul.Q.On the show “Laverne and Shirley” with Penny Marshall, is Penny her real name or is it Frances?— J.J, Chattanooga, Tenn.A.She's always been Penny.Q.I am quite curious about the old show “Perry Mason,” but not the one starring Raymond Burr.If my information is correct, it ran for one season, in 1973, and Perry was played by Monte Markham.Who played the other leading characters?— B.S., Woburn, Mass.A.Della was played by Sharon Acker, Paul Drake by Albert Stratton, Lt.Tragg by Dane Clark, and poor Hamilton Burger, who always lost, by Harry Guardino.Q.There was a British film titled “Ten Little Indians,” made in 1966.My question is, was there also a film of the same title produced in 1965 starring Tuesday Weld and Hugh O'Brian? If so, is this available on a video?— J.H., Huntingdon, lady who sued him for harassment. My friend said it was Holly.I disagree with her, but for the life of me 1 can’t remember the name of the woman who made the charges.— LP., Eureka, Calif.A.For the life of me, it was Dian Parkinson.Q.1 enjoyed “Petticoat Junction” as a kid, especially the lovely Billie Jo, who was played by Meredith MacRae.Is she the sister of Meredith Baxter?— B.E., Friend, Texas A.First, the two Merediths aren't sisters, but M.MacRae is the daughter of Gordon and Sheila MacRae.Baxter is the daughter of actress Whitney Blake, who starred as Dorothy Baxter on the series “Hazel” from 1961-65.Q.Who said, “Wanna buy a duck™?My friend and I have not been able to agree. He says it was Eddie Cantor, and I say it was Joe Penner.Who is right?— A.D., Hornbrook, Calif.A.You are.It was Penner.Q.My husband says that Spencer Tracy was the only one to play “The Old Man and the Sea,” but | seem to remember Anthony Quinn also.— C.S., Naples, Fla.A.You're right.Quinn starred in a TV movie based on the Hemingway novel in 1990.Q.How old was Tatum O’Neal when she played Addie in “Paper Moon"?And did she make any films before it?— Unsigned, Abilene, Texas A.Tatum was 11 when she played in that film.Tatum made her film debut in the picture, and won an Oscar for her scene-stealing work.Q.I have Smith looks like a man waiting for the other shoe to drop. But the way things are going for him, the only place it’s likely to land is in the wet cement outside some Hollywood theatre where the stars are invited to leave their footprints.Smith has a book out, he has one of the hottest properties in TV syndication and the fan club for his Red Green Show seems to double every few months — it now boasts almost 40,000 members across the continent. The show gets 1,000 fan letters a week.“The success of the show was the furthest thing from our minds when we started,” says Smith, in the midst of shooting episodes for the coming season, the show's fifth, at the CHCH- TV studio in Hamilton. After all, Red Green is, by Smith’s own admission, the quintessential male bore.He will talk with ludicrous authority on any subject, but especially if it has to do with being handy (which he’s not), the outdoors, duct tape and life at Possum Lodge, which is a kind of ragtag, backwater fraternity of lovable bumblers, bluffers and tinkerers. The Possum Lodge’s motto? When All Else Fails, Play Dead.Red Green's Handyman’s Corner is probably the most popular segment of the show.Red once tried to build a kid's ride out of one of those rotating circular clothes lines. You get the picture.“How can you not love him,” says one fan.“It’s a celebration of male incompetence,” doggedly posturing under the illusion that everything is firmly under control.Sound familiar?Everyone knows a guy just like Red Green. The show started as a series for CHCH in 1990, a low- budget staple that would keep Smith's company afloat while he prepared pilots for more ambitious projects. The Red Green Show was such a hit locally the pilots never got made.Just the same, CHCH dropped the show after a short run.The cancellation caused near riots.High schools sent in petitions. Some took out a billboard — “Forget the Whales, Save Red Green.” But the cancellation was probably the best thing that could have happened to the show.Smith got a New York representative to shop the show around in the United States.By the fall of '93 The Red Green Show was showing in five U.S.markets.Now it is being carried on over 60 stations. It has also been sold in Trinidad and Tobago, the Pacific Rim and Turkey. In Canada, The Red Green Show is carried on Global.Last year there was a barter deal in which Smith bought the airtime from Global in Ontario and sold the ad time himself, using the money to meet production costs. This year CanWest-Global is paying a licence fee to air the show across the country, says Dave Smith, business manager for S and S Production Inc.All this, from a defiantly ordinary character Smith created in 1980 and trotted out on his various CHCH comedy shows — Smith and Smith, The Comedy Mill, and so on.Red Green has achieved cult hero status.Smith made 39 plane flights in March — many for appearances on televised PBS pledge drives where he brings in more pledges than all the paid pitch people combined. He carries his laptop on all his flights and does some writing on the plane. But much of the final shape of The Red Green Show gets determined by the audiences at the tapings.“The audience is always right,” says Smith.“They tell you where a skit ends.” Vermont ETV presents a Red Green ‘triple threat’ Saturday, August 12, from 9 to 11 p.m.with three back-to-back episodes of The New Red Green Show.Steve Smith stars as Red Green.6:38 FLOW SATURDAY 7.00 5 TRON MAN JETSONS >
