This ?nancial support is therefore an incentive to encourage them to continue their actions. We are counting on the commitment of the various stakeholders to answer the call: the artistic community, municipal authorities and volunteers in the region,” the prefect said.Applications for funding under the ?nancial support program for cultural initiatives should be submitted by March 18, 2022.An envelope of $30,000 is available for this call for projects. In 2021, 12 cultural projects received ?nancial assistance totalling $35,636 from the program.Of those, the following three projects were launched in recent months: Carnival parade in the Caribbean tradition - For the ?fth edition of the Festiv’arts Caribéen de Magog, from Aug.6 to 8, the Comité d’exposition sur les arts et la culture caribéenne added a carnival parade to the event, bringing together citizens and twenty artists: musicians, dance groups and circus performers. The project also included the addition of a workshop for the creation of masks in the Caribbean tradition. These initiatives aim to foster exchanges between Caribbean artists and the population through visual and performing arts in a festive and friendly atmosphere. On the Land - Louise Abbott produced a series of short ?lms on contemporary agriculture and horticulture in the Eastern Townships. In total, six bilingual mini-documentaries take the viewer into the lives of local livestock and vegetable farmers. This project provides an un?ltered look at the challenges of the trade and pays tribute to these frontline workers, who toil in often dif?cult conditions to ensure the population’s food supply.Panorama sur notre culture - On Sept.24, the municipality of Saint- Catherine-de-Hatley and its cultural committee proposed activities to encourage encounters between the general public and local artists. This initiative, carried out on the occasion of the 25th edition of the Journées de la culture, also aimed to highlight the cultural and heritage heritage heritage of the region. The 270 citizens present met the exhibitors in a festive atmosphere where several artists participated in the event: visual artists, writers, musicians, singers and a slammer. All information concerning the Programme de soutien ?nancier aux initiatives culturelles de la MRC de Memphrémagog, as well as the application form, is available on the MRC website at www.mrcmemphremagog.com/culture.Applications for funding should be sent by email to Marie-Christine Perron-Marier, territorial development of?cer at the MRC, at mc.perron@ mrcmemphremagog.com.She is also available to answer questions during the preparation of applications.Mike Goudreau Band & Dany Roy present “Christmas Rendezvous” Outlet Staff Local musician Mike Goudreau has just released his 22nd independent work, “Christmas Rendez vous”, a collection of 13 Christmas songs. This album was co-produced and recorded remotely and in studio, with longtime friend, collaborator and saxophonist Dany Roy during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, between September 2020 and November 2021.The album boasts ?ve original songs composed by Goudreau and ?ve re-arranged Traditional Public Domain Christmas hymns by Roy & Goudreau.A Christmas album would be incomplete without a few favorite classic cover versions as well with three songs.Mike Goudreau sings and plays guitar and Dany Roy plays sax, trumpet and ?ute as well as creating the lush horn arrangements on this festive Holiday themed recording. For this project, the duo reached out to two of Montreal’s most talented Jazz musicians, Richard Irwin on drums and Dave Watts on upright bass.Special guests include Erich Kory on cello, Toby Wilson on dobro, pedal steel and acoustic guitar and Antoine Fradkin on violin. An eclectic mix of Swinging Jazz, Jump Blues, Chicago Blues, Americana, Gospel, French Cabaret and a Bossanova styled take on a Christmas classic.! Nine songs are sung in English, three songs sung in French and one is instrumental. From track one to track 13 , it’s a joyous and groovy mix that will leave the listener with a fuzzy Holiday feeling they’ll want to put on repeat! Despite being recorded in part remotely, the album is of world class audio quality with the help of one of Quebec’s best audio engineers, Dany Legendre, who provided the mixing for this production.Mastering was assured by Steve Corrao from Sage Audio in Nashville, Tennessee.Since 2007, Goudreau’s songs have continued to be featured in dozens of Hollywood ?lms and network TV shows, and 2019-2020 was no exception with his original songs placed in ?lms like The Banker (with Samuel Jackson, 2020), the feature ?lm Dark Waters (2019), the CBS TV show Dynasty (2020), and the Christmas TV movie The Happiest Season (Hulu 2020), to name only a few.You can get Mike Goudreau Band’s new album through cdbaby.com or mikegoudreau.com.It is also available on ITunes, Apple the dazzling lights and jolly fever of December.November is a time of deep frost and bare trees and short days.November is almost over and soon we will adjust, as we do every year, to the changing seasons and the changing light and most of us will embrace winter.I love winter, and I especially love playing outside in the snow.In the Eastern Townships we are so blessed with abundant frozen ponds, sliding hills and quiet forest paths.Because the pandemic has forced so many of our social gatherings outside, it is easy to feel a bit of lament as the patio season fades into the background.Planning playdates in the park is challenging when it becomes too cold to grip the monkey bars, and the children’s noses and cheeks are raw and red from the north wind.Snow becomes a gift after bone-chilling bare-branched weeks of late fall and early winter. When we have a snow covered landscape the world becomes quieter, softer, more re?ective. We may not have a lot of sunshine, but after the darkest nights close in, the snowfalls mirror back to us the moonlight and the weak winter rays seem all the more powerful.Today’s book for review, Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner, was chosen in part because it reminded me of all of the reasons I love the winter season, and reading it helped bring me one step further out of the November slump that I have been in.I really enjoy reading non-?ction books with my children, information-based texts are really hitting their stride for my pre-reading kindergartener and my bookworm third-grader.They both would likely accept an encyclopedia-style text with open arms, as long as it had good illustrations.Over and Under the Snow provides delightful learning opportunities for the inquisitive mind, while also having a sweet narrative story of an adult and child on a snowy forest cross-country ski adventure. This book manages to straddle two kid-lit genres, with bonus points for poetic lyricism in the descriptive text.We follow the pair through the forest, and we observe the snowy surface world we can see, as well as observing the clues nature offers into the world of creatures under the snow. The book’s artwork was created by the award-winning author/illustrator Christopher Silas Neal, whose retro-style and muted winter tones lend a kind of timeless feeling to this 2011 release.Over the snow, things are quiet and calm with only tracks and cracks in the crust to invite our imaginations to wonder about all the forest creatures whose winter homes lay beneath. The secret life of squirrels, voles and beavers is beautifully described and artfully illustrated. This is the type of picture book which has a long shelf- life for a family. The text is complex enough to keep my independent reading kid engaged, especially along with the glossary and extra information about animals and their habitats at the end of the book.My little one, and even younger preschoolers, would also enjoy this book because of the cute animals playing hide and seek, as well as the comforting repeating pattern of the text.Messner mentions in her website bio that she creates books to promote wonder, and I think this is an excellent example of that.I know that not everyone loves getting outside with skis or snowshoes and tromping though a ?eld in the cold and snow. Some folks prefer their winter adventure setting curled up in a cozy chair with a hot cup of tea and a good book. This story manages to satisfy my own desire for both, and it feels to me like a delightful way to end a special winter’s day with love and sweet dreams.Stay warm my friends, winter is nearly here, and since we cannot stop it from coming, at least we can try to ?nd a way to celebrate it.Over and Under the Snow, as well as other books by Messner, is available to borrow from the Lennoxville Library.Shanna Bernier is a parent and youth worker who loves children’s literature, playing outside, and making art with kids.NEWS FROM THE LENNOXVILLE LIBRARY The Library’s annual Adopt-a- Book fundraising campaign runs through mid-December.As a small non-pro?t, all levels of support are most welcome.Donations are networking instincts from other ventures put a distinct twist on Andrade’s new second-hand store.“We are the ?fth thrift shop for children and every one offers the same products. So ,we said, well, let’s ?nd about ten artisans so people we come to the store,” Andrade recounts.“And those ten turned into twenty, and then thirty.” “And, now we’re at 97,” she marvels.“Our youngest is eight years old, from here in Sherbrooke. And the eldest is 92.I should be receiving her slippers today or tomorrow.” Everything is handmade in Quebec, with a wide range of products including natural beauty products, bath products, make-up, products for men, candles, tisanes, pralines, biscottes, maple syrup, and grow-with- me clothing that resizes as children grow. The handmade goods have rapidly grown to represent the majority of sales.Andrade’s clients are coming from all around the Townships, plus a signi?cant afternoon rush of parents picking up children from the neighbouring school.Gifts represent a portion of her early demand, but Andrade points to consumables as a signi?cant driver, “We do have articles that people have to use on a daily basis. We have shampoo, we have conditioner, we have deodorants. And the beauty products, exfoliants and stuff like that where people re-use.” For Andrade, the biggest surprise so far may be the in?uence on her own mentality as a consumer.“You know how you just recycle whatever you have at home and don’t necessarily take into consideration the impact that it might have… until you open a box of handmade make-up remover pads, for example, and you use reusables instead of ones you just put in the garbage and only use once.It is a change of mind.” Andrade has products from several local makers but also from as far away as Rimouski, Baie-Comeau, Laurentides, Outaouais, Montreal, and the South Shore.“From everywhere,” Andrade exclaims.Everything is sold on consignment.“It’s a partnership,” says Andrade.“If I sell, they sell.If one makes money, the other one makes money.” Andrade has found most of her artisans online through Etsy.If she gets a good feeling about their product photos or logo, she reaches out.“It is rare that anyone says no right off the bat on the ?rst call.” Andrade does not expect a minimum or maximum ?rst delivery from new partners.“The artisans pretty much decide. But if they say ‘I’ll send one of each,’ I let them know the fuller their space looks the more it will sell.” In those cases, Andrade contacts them after their ?rst sales so they can decide whether to send a more sooner than later.Expanding her network has been largely predicated on building relationships.“I think it is about having chemistry over the phone,” Andrade explains.“It’s a lot on faith, however the contract lets them know when I send out my sales reports and how the transfer of their portion of the money works.” Andrade thinks a professional contract is a key component of establishing trust, “I have a solid contract that was written by a lawyer here in Sherbrooke.” “Some of them I’ve never met, so we keep in touch by phone or by video.I start my relationships on good basis and make sure it stays good so the artisan has a good experience.” Andrade is currently working to bring in the last of her holiday stock.“I’m still waiting on ten artisans. Not that there’s a cut-off date but I said if you want to be part of the Christmas season then Dec.1 is the latest to send in your stuff. Then I won’t be soliciting any new artisans, because it’s going to be a busy month.” Starting in January, Andrade hopes to expand to offer online sales as well.Since ?rst opening her Facebook group months before signing a retail lease, Andrade has been promoting the individual Etsy pages of her curated artisans.Next, she wants to start selling through her own online portals as well.“The artisans have let me know that’s an ok thing to do for them.” “What comes after that would be to change our locale for something bigger. Not right now.In two years, three years maybe,” Andrade muses.“One step at a time. One step at a time, and everything is thought out before a new decision is made.” PHOTOS BY GEOFF AGOMBAR CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY and 351 cases per 100,000 people, respectively.Although the case numbers and outbreaks are problematic, regional public health director Dr.Alain Poirier said that the fact that the illness is concentrated in children at the moment means that there are fewer hospitalizations than the last time number got this high in the region. Also, assuming that people engage with the vaccination process, he said it also means that there is hope things could turn around in the near future.Of the 36,700 children who are unvaccinated in the region, 6,621 booked appointments on Nov.23 and another 2,867 followed suit on the 24.Poirier said that there has been a keen interest among parents to accompany their children in the vaccination process, which he hailed as a good thing given that the public health department will only be able to hold vaccination clinics in about half of the region’s schools, with priority going to more remote or underprivileged communities. In order to help control the spread of the virus in local schools while the campaign gets up and running, Bonnardel said that more rapid testing will be made available to schools and daycare centres.Poirier, meanwhile, shared that more restrictive measures may be applied in school environments depending on the need, but he reiterated the fact that the response in an outbreak situation varies from school to school.“We want to close the smallest number of schools possible,” he said, explaining that reductions to extracurricular activities or changes to class interactions are among the measures that might be implemented, depending on the need. The Province of Quebec reported 902 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total number of people infected to 442,246 with 7,047 active cases. There were ive new deaths recorded, for a total of 11,571 since the start of the pandemic. The number of hospitalizations decreased by one to 210, 45 of whom were in intensive care.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Vatz Laaroussi. The report, which was compiled using interviews with informants from institutions, community organizations and student associations, describes more than 30 situations of racism and discrimination towards people with immigrant backgrounds living in Sherbrooke.“This situation of inequality, inequity, exists in Sherbrooke. It exists and it touches different populations. The Black population are mostly affected, but also the Arab population, who we often identify as Muslim, whether they are or not,” said Vatz Laaroussi. They’ve been affected by a lack of employment opportunities, health and social services, education, housing, and dealing with police oficers, Vatz Laaroussi explained, adding that they also discovered that everyone agrees Sherbrooke needs to be a more inclusive city. The report also explores the dynamics between institutions, community organizations and student associations.Institutions are more likely to perceive fewer situations of racism and discrimination within their organizations, showing a lack of awareness.Meanwhile, the community organizations and student associations tell a different story. They see, and live, racism and discrimination on the ground, and they believe it is an issue that must be addressed by all organizations, institutions and political authorities in the region. The report notes that there are few spaces to report racism and discrimination within these institutions, leaving many complaints unheard and unseen. It’s not talked about often or openly, the report reads, so the situation remains unclear, unspoken, and taboo.People in positions of power within institutions hesitate to have honest and direct conversations about racism and discrimination, Vatz Laaroussi said, and while there is multiculturalism in Sherbrooke, they hide behind this fact, and let the questions disappear. The report, which was presented to the city of Sherbrooke on Monday, outlined 14 general recommendations, as well as 36 speciic recommendations related to improving research, education, health, employment, housing, and police practices. Most notably, the report concludes that there needs to be a complementary study, and more targeted research in order to “better understand and quantify the manifestations of racism and discrimination in Sherbrooke” and throughout the entire region.Vatz Laaroussi, who co-authored the report with Dr.Sabruna Dorceus, also a professor at the Université de Sherbrooke, added that tabling the document is just one small step. She wants to see positive and concrete action by the city to make it a more inclusive place.“It’s important to remain vigilant on the question of racism and discrimination […] We need to have in Sherbrooke, like in other cities in Quebec and Canada, a permanent committee, or an organization, an independent organization, that is present to listen to complaints,” she said.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 case numbers rise Report on racism InspirAction Foundation still supporting Haiti school despite challenges By Gordon Lambie It has been two years since representatives of the InspirAction Foundation have been able to visit the school they founded in Haiti, but according to founding director Yannick Daoudi, the institution is carrying on, nonetheless.“It has been set up to run without us,” he said, sharing that despite a large number of challenges in the surrounding environment, enrollment at the school has actually increased by nearly 50 per cent since the last time he was down.To understand the signiicance of that growth, it is important to be aware of some of the things that have been going on in Haiti over that time.Although the country, like everywhere else in the world, has had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, Daoudi pointed out that the people of Haiti are living through a period of great uncertainty and upheaval at the moment.A travel advisory updated by the Government of Canada earlier this month councils against non-essential travel to the country due to fuel shortages, the risk of kidnapping, and civil unrest.“The security situation is deteriorating quickly,” the advisory reads. In brief, Daoudi traced the current troubles back to a corruption scandal involving the former President, Jovenel Moïse, that irst came to light in the spring of 2019.Growing unrest around allegations that the president embezzled large amounts of money through a deal to acquire fuel from Venezuela eventually culminated in his assassination earlier this year.Since that time, the country has been more or less divided up by rival gangs.Daoudi said that right now the school staff are making the call on a daily basis whether to open or not, depending on word-of-mouth information from friends and neighbours.“They are operating on ’the politics of good neighbourhoods,’” he said, sharing that the people in the community have no school, but it is also a challenge for those here in Canada who have put time and energy over the last ten years into building relationships with people who are now in troubled times and out of reach.“Right after the assassination I called the principal, and when she answered she was speaking very CONT’D ON PAGE 5 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 Dan Hill became a household name in Canada for hits like Sometimes When We Touch, and for writing Grammy- Award-winning songs for Celine Dion, he was an elite runner with the Toronto Track Club.Back in the 70s Hill trained with the likes of world class marathoner, Brian Maxwell, among others, including his brother, Larry, at the prestigious training facility. It’s an aspect of his life which few are aware, and not a subject he’s known for speaking about, yet he’s as knowledgeable as anyone in the sport; and he’s still training regularly.A multiple Juno Award winner, he is as tuned to his ?tness as he is to his stellar music career.A Canadian songwriter’s hall of famer, Hill turned his train of thought to his passion for running during our email interview. For those unmotivated to run outside during colder temperatures, read on for his treadmill running tips and advice: 1.Always run on the treadmill rather than outside when coming back from a running injury because the treadmill is far less demanding on the entire body than running outside; The treadmill surface is ?at and consistent, unlike running outside.Should you discover that you’ve returned to running too soon and your injury is ?aring up again, better for you to be on a treadmill discovering this than 45 minutes away from your house.2.Always walk on (the) treadmill before running for at least ?ve minutes.Once you start running, begin slowly and slowly build up speed throughout the run.Always walk for ?ve to 20 minutes when you’ve ?nished running on the treadmill.3.While in theory, treadmill running is less demanding than running outside, I have found that my bpm and perceived exertion is actually more extreme on the treadmill.4.I highly recommend blasting your favourite music when treadmill running. On the other hand, I advise against listening to anything through earbuds, etc.when running outside, because hearing is a signi?cant part of monitoring all that’s going on around you when you’re running outside, from wayward traf?c to obnoxious bicyclists to incautious, reckless pedestrians. As well, any kind of ear bud/ listening device is highly damaging to your ears and eardrums.5.Keep a diary of all your runs, especially your treadmill runs, including how you felt emotionally when running as well as how demanding your pace was, and lastly, document any aches or pains, e.g.tight hamstrings, stiff hip ?exors 6.Despite the common advice concerning treadmill running, DO NOT run on any kind of incline as that’s an injury waiting to happen. The whole point of treadmill running is to give your body a break from running outside.Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind COURTESY CONCERT Lumières de Noël – Christmas Lights The column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Together By Revs Mead Baldwin, Rabbi Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1“The more we get together, together, together, the more we get together the happier we’ll be.Cause your friends are my friends, and my friends are your friends. The more we get together the happier we’ll be”.That camp song still resonates with me.I also remember my parents teaching us that when we do chores together, they are so much easier. That was so true, especially during potato picking season. This simple truth can be seen in school theatre productions and writing assignments. My favourite example of this comes from a group of grade ?ve and six students who wrote a mystery novel that was published and each class member wrote a chapter.I cherish mine.I have a wonderful memory from a few years ago at a Passover Seder supper. It was hosted by a local church, but presided over by a rabbi from Chicago. He and the minister were close personal friends. The local imam from the mosque and a few of it’s members were also there.Together, we had a wonderful night. At the end the rabbi and the minister share a giant hug. This wisdom about togetherness has been lost these days by politicians and certain hate groups who promote divisiveness.Their message, “we are correct, and everyone else is lying” has spread wider and wider. Why do so many want to divide us?Why have public vaccinations been portrayed as an attack on our freedom?Historically, some of the most progressive moments in our democracy came from minority governments where parties had to cooperate and work together.Maybe it’s time we remembered that simple message from childhood. The more we get together the happier we’ll be.2 Many years ago, I spent a summer studying Jewish texts in Jerusalem. On the ?rst day of the program at the school where I studied, we spent some time matching ourselves up with Hevruta, study partners-people whom we would work with each day of the program. Each day would be spent examining a text, and exploring ideas together with this person, guided and assisted by our teachers and other people in the group.I was placed with someone who was very kind, but much more knowledgeable than me.He had been studying these topics for years, and I knew that he was much more versed in the texts than I was.Admittedly, I was a bit nervous at ?rst, and remember thinking to myself: What on earth can I offer to this learning partner, he is just so much smarter than me!?Hevruta, the traditional Jewish experience of deep study and partnership with another, is based on the power of learning together with others, but also friendship and guidance. On its most basic level, a hevruta is a study partner, but it is so much more. They are not necessarily someone at the same level or even with the same values or outlook as you, but they are someone who becomes a true equal by opening themselves as much to being a guide through the learning as they are a receiver of the other’s unique perspective. It is believed that even if one person “knows” more than the other, simply being able to ask questions provides as much wisdom and knowing the facts, or having the answers. In fact we are told that “One who learns from one’s friend a single chapter, or a single Halachah, or a single verse, or a single expression, or even a single letter, must show him or her honor.” What if we really had to live by the words of this idea?If we learn even a single expression, a single letter then we have to show others respect?.If someone makes even one small point, asks us one challenging question, then even if we still think we are right, they deserve our respect and honor. We spend our whole lives together with others, but we don’t always ?nd a way to honor and respect those who might challenge us the most.Yet everyone, from those we love to those who frustrate us, everyone can give us that letter of learning just by being different and challenging us to look at ourselves and our beliefs. And this deserves respect. When we learn together with others, when we live life with others, when we share joy and share challenges together with others, we grow in wisdom.3Today, depending upon how you’ve been counting, marks the 626th day of Covid time.Back when it all started, and our life as usual ended as the lockdown was declared, limiting our interactions and bidding us all stay home and keep our distance. Many of us wondered when, if or how we’d ever get together again with family and friends or make new acquaintances at a distance.Since then we’ve made countless changes in our routine, struggling to hold it all, including ourselves and our lives, together. How have you managed to navigate this pandemic? Most importantly, how have you risen to the challenge to ?nd new ways to be together?Writing this on Thursday I can smell the stuffed turkey in the oven; various veggies chopped or peeled await their turn as this small household of two prepares to celebrate our second annual Zoom Thanksgiving with the American side of the family. No visitors again this year on either side of the border; though it’s of?cially open and we’re all multi-vaxxed, a reluctant but healthy caution rules the day.Instead we’ll repeat last year’s festive gathering, each of us creating our own meal and decorating our tables, raising a simultaneous toast on screen. We’ll describe then enjoy our separate meals together from wherever in space we are.Like any holiday feast, there will be grandparents, grown children, grandchildren, friends and relatives – and various nonhuman companions. We’ll bow our heads in prayer. In descending age order we’ll take turns around the virtual table to recount a whole year’s worth of blessings. And the theme this time will be the same as last year, maybe even deeper, full of a profound gratitude that despite all that has changed, we are still together. As we’ve been together since ?rst the Covid protocols were announced, gathering online for weekly family meetings. We’ve been following a format that has by now become so familiar, sharing our joys and sorrows, naming our intentions for the coming week, inviting and offering support as needed for our everyday lives.Celebrating birthdays and accomplishments and listening with love. It’s become for this family a holy time – a time not to be missed, a new take on the old-fashioned Sunday dinner which you’d dare not miss for anything foolish or frivolous. It’s become a spiritual feast over time, all the more poignant and profound because we come together across huge distances. And we are closer now, feel more together, than ever before. My hope for us all is that we rise to the challenge and use our creative energies to invent new modes of togetherness.Because whatever else has changed, we are still all in this together. It’s the only way we’ll ever get through.4 We have just 3 voices today, so I thought I would add 2 teenage voices.Marcus Young and Kristen Wilson wrote this faith statement, a few years ago, and it adds the perfect ?nal take on our word “Together” CONFIRMATION CREED God is a musician who brings people together Everyone is a different note with a unique sound The church is a festivity of happiness and a bundle of joy Jesus is the leader ,who is trustworthy and cares for our emotional wounds wrestler, better known by his ring name, Dick Togo.A neighbor started calling him Togo when he was about four years old and it just stuck, but the truth is that although he was a bit chubby, he was never a ?ghter.Bélanger was born in La Tuque and grew up with two sisters and a brother.Nobody else in the family was a musician, but they all loved country music and often listen to it in the house. His father worked at the Canadian International Paper, an English manufacturer in La Tuque.Bélanger was exposed to English music early on in life and he developed a love for rhythm.“My parents had a turntable and many records of mainly American country artists,” he remembered.“I recall making circles out of play dough, which I placed all around me and used as my drums.Following the beat of the music on my make believe drums was an activity that I enjoyed quite a bit.One day, when he was about 13, on his way back from school, Bélanger was following two older students who were talking about music. As soon as they mentioned that they had to ?nd a drummer, he told them he was interested and could do it even if he was very shy at the time.“I didn’t have a drum, but the girl owned both a guitar and a drum. They invited me to come practice with them and I did. This is how it all started,” Bélanger explained.A short while after that, the trio started performing with two guitars and a drum at private events, parties, and weddings.Belanger gained a lot of experience and abilities and as he got better, to his surprise, he started getting phone calls for jobs.“Some much older and skilled musicians started calling me, offering me jobs in hotels, bars, dance hall and since I wasn’t of age, I had to sit in the lobby with a chip and a soda pop during the intermission,” he shared.“From the very ?rst gig I played, I knew that I was in the right place on a stage.I have always felt an easiness performing on stage, contrary to how uncomfortable I felt with people off stage.” For quite a few years, Bélanger and his friends formed little bands, mainly to practice and hone their skills. When he turned 18, he met Gaston Tremblay, a member of the local band The Aquarels, who told him that if he ever moved here, to give him a call.It was already a part of the young man’s plans to move to Sherbrooke, ?rst for the proximity to the US border and the many country bands around here, but also because he had seen the band Big Foot perform on television. He thought that the chance to play with great bands was much bigger if he was here in town, so along with his childhood friend Rejean Letendre, he decided they would come live in Sherbrooke.COURTESY CONT’D ON PAGE 6 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY initiatives on the school from a distance, Daoudi said that right now he is committed to listening to what the local team says they need, and trying to help get that to them. While that can take on many forms in such challenging times, recently the need has been printer ink cartridges, and a class set of recorders “We want the kids to be able to play music again,” he said, explaining that the last set the school had to work with have become worn out.It is for the work of ?lling those basic needs, as well as the work of continuing to build the school, that the InspirAction Foundation engages in regular fundraising. With the pandemic having shut down most conventional forms of public event, however, that work has also proven a challenge.“These are the two worst years we’ve ever had,” the director said, pointing out that past events have been very focused on community events and gatherings. This year, to try to bridge the gap, the foundation is delivering Christmas trees for $45.The trees range in size from four feet to eight feet tall and are grown in Stoke. An order form is available on the foundation’s facebook page, but the director also said that anyone interested in ordering a tree can email directly to contact@inspirActionFoundation.org.The trees will be delieverd on Dec.4.“We want to make sure people see that 100 per cent of the about a year together.” During that time, Moreault and Belanger met many musicians with the intent of ?nding some top players to form a band.During their search, they did quite a few gigs but the one gig that was the most impressive for young Belanger, was to leave on tour with Terry Sutton.“I remember when we left on tour with Terry.I thought at the time, that it was the real deal.My dreams were coming true.To all get in that van and hit the road for a long period of time, playing different venues in different cities was sensational. It was really exciting for me as a young musician,” he recalled.Of course, Belanger went on to tour many other times in his life, but this ?rst experience was fabulous. He and Moreault ?nally found the right musicians to form the ?rst edition of the band Texas Quebec, including Michael Goodsell, Mike Savoy, Jacques Jobin, and Bob Boisclair.“This is how we formed Texas Quebec.I must say that I learnt a lot from Moreault about the importance of what goes on the stage, as well as the business part of the music industry,” he said.“Yvan always was a go-getter and not as shy as I was.” The guys invested a lot of energy in reaching the top.Back when they were playing at the Bar Ouest in Sherbrooke, Belanger recalled that after the bar closed at 2:30 a.m., they stuck around and practiced until 6:00 a.m.This goes to show us that even when you are very talented, hard work is important if you want spectacular results.Texas Quebec was on its way to stardom. They did the Festival in Dolbeau, which got them a lot of attention, as well as gigs all over the province. They really reached the peak when they opened the Petit Nashville Bar in Sherbrooke. The place was packed four nights a week, but then came a change of musicians: Rejean Letendre, Alain Carpentier and Roger Gravel joined Moreault and Belanger for the second edition of Texas Quebec.“The funny thing is that Carpentier and Letendre were also natives to La Tuque just like me.A lot of musicians came from La Tuque and funny thing is at one point during that period, most of the bands around had at least one musician from La Tuque” Bélanger said.At that time, many variety shows were recorded at Tele 7 and when the artists were staying in Sherbrooke overnight, they looked for a bar with entertainment like the Petit Nashville.Every week would bring some new faces at the bar.The rumor that many artists were visiting the bar started to spread, drawing bigger crowds and raising the awareness of Texas Quebec. The group was the ?rst live band to perform at the Michel Jasmin talk show. For quite a few years, the band was constantly on tour performing in every festivals and often accompanying artists who did not have a regular band. The musicians were tight, the harmonies perfect and the musicianship was unbelievable.“One day we decided to open Musikville (music store). We sold everything that had to do with music, but we also had an equipment rental department and guys who specialised in sound and stage lights. That kept us quite busy until one day, when Carpentier and I went on tour with Alain Morisod and Sweet people” he shared.Eventually they became too busy with different other aspects of their career and decided to sell the store.Bélanger didn’t know but his life on the road was far from being over.“Quebec singer Pier Beland got in touch with me, and I agreed to go on tour with her,” he said.“I was also responsible for everything that had to do with the tour.It lasted ten years.Every summer, we did at least 20 huge shows and we toured all over the province” Bélanger is cool, calm, collected, and a very friendly person. His ability to work with a team and adapt to almost anything served him right. So did the fact that he was a perfectionist. He’s no longer the shy young man who came to Sherbrooke years ago.The man is talented, personable and an excellent collaborator for those he works with. After such a successful career, he now picks the gigs he wants to play.He loves music and he wants to have fun doing it.According to Bélanger, the best quality for a drummer or any musicians is the ability to listen to the others musicians playing on the same stage. To conclude, he said that after all these years, he is still in amazed at how he was kindly greeted by the English community, despite the fact that when he moved here, he barely spoke the language.Belanger is forever grateful for all the lasting friendships he has made here and traditional country music is still his music of choice.Bélanger PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY just bottled up during the height of the pandemic.I’ve had it up to here with all of the doom and gloom these days — and if you were with me right now, you’d see that I have my hand raised way up over my head.It starts to weigh on you, right?Demonstrations, protests, government inaction, corruption, and violence at every turn.I chose this path, though, this job.I’m in it every day.But I can’t imagine what it must be like as a reader, especially a casual one.I’ve had friends tell me that they stopped reading, listening and watching the news altogether.I like to stay informed, but I can understand that everyone has a breaking point. My Take: By Gordon Lambie It’s been bizarre, having no bazaars.I know that some took place last year in adapted formats, and others are working on making their comeback, but it’s here in the pre-Christmas, bazaar and bake sale season that the lingering elements of social distancing feel most striking to me.Remember the pushback against the term “social distancing?” The idea being that we should focus on creating physical distance, but not social isolation? As much as I like that idea, it turns out that doesn’t really work in practice.Staying away from other people is social distancing, whether we call it that or not, and once you build a wall between yourself and the world, it takes some time to knock it down. For me the bake sales and bazaars have never really been about handicrafts or brownies, but about getting out and seeing people in the community. My Take: By Matthew McCully Last week Gordon walked into the of?ce, back from yet another stressful assignment and said, can’t there just be a bake sale somewhere? It’s been a running joke ever since. You see, it has been a heavy few months here in the newsroom.Lots of important issues to cover.Every now and then it’s nice to slip away from that and get the lowdown on a bake sale or a spaghetti supper.Who cooked what, how many volunteers participated, what are we raising money for today, look what so-and-so donated to the cause. It’s heartwarming and a pleasure to write about. But what I have to keep reminding myself is that all the civil unrest we’ve been covering recently; the protests, the strikes, the inquiries, the reports. These are all catalysts for change. Also, many great things around us started with a simple bake sale. The Record welcomes your letters to the editor. Please limit your letters to 300 words. We reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, legality and taste. Please ensure It is horri?c that people have accepted that word to describe themselves, as if being a consumer were of the greatest priority in de?ning who they are.We can shine the spotlight of criticism on consumerism and runaway capitalism by going to a protest.Undoubtedly some placards will point out that ‘fast fashion’ not only creates one-time-use shoddy clothes but also relies on exploitation and spews out enormous amounts of waste and pollution. Some retailers have taken a stand, too.The rise of the global retailer has caused many small businesses to try to band together, as few can compete with the likes of Amazon.“This Friday,” states The Guardian, “independent retailers across the [United Kingdom] will shut down their websites, donate their pro?ts to charity and plant trees as part of a renewed drive against the rabid consumerism encouraged by large online sellers offering deals for Black Friday.” This Friday, Buy Nothing protesters will cut up their vastly overdrawn credit cards, participate in zombie walks pushing empty carts through shopping malls, or organize winter coat exchanges. Some might organize a walk through the woods, far away from box stores, and focus on protecting Nature.Another reason for refusing to participate in Black Friday comes as a result of most people’s heightened awareness of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss.Plastic clothing and excessive packaging have a huge impact on planetary ecological health. There will be a Buy Nothing Day celebration this Friday, Nov.26, at 2 p.m.at Portland Boulevard and McCrea Street.Bring your placards, have fun and buy nothing.Little by little. Each year the Lennoxville and District Women’s Centre takes part in the 12 DAYS OF ACTION TO END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE.Between Nov.25 and Dec.6, The Record will be publishing an article in each issue to raise awareness and shine a light on this critical social problem.A piece on the importance of compassion and humanity in healing: Of?ce hour.A student had said they would drop by to see their midterm.I pull out the midterm copy, review it and resume working.-Knock knock.Mask on.“Hello, come in and have a seat.” [.] An hour later, we look at the midterm. You wonder what happened in the meantime? We talked, we shared opinions, concerns, we learned from each other’s’ perspectives. We actually met.I got to know a person, on a human level.Beyond the roles assigned to us in our shared social context.Student and prof, we share more than that.Dare I say that I think I’m a friendly prof to my students, and often fool myself into thinking that I know them.I know them with their masks on, their student masks, and I hear and see them with my prof eyes and ears.Routine numbs us, makes us forget that behind a mask, a title, a number, a gender, an orientation, a name… is where lays humanity. This piece you are about to read made me want to discover what other hidden treasures are in those wonderful human beings sitting in my classes.Little by little.Life is uncertain.Life.Is.Uncertain.Uncertainty is remaining compassionate with yourself and others; while remaining aware that everyone is living their own reality.Life is full of adversity, nevertheless with a compassionate heart, we can create the change we want to see.Compassion is the catalyst to change. How I identify should not affect my interaction with you.My Gender does not allow you to be ignorant during our interactions. At the end of the day, everyone wants to belong. The self-awareness of our privilege, our biases, our preferences, our interpretations, our intentions, and our vocabulary, is pivotal to spreading belongingness.Nonetheless, compassion requires understanding that each individual is capable of teaching another.Meaning, whether the experience is positive, indifferent or negative, the positive experiences will be de?ned by the negative experiences.Growth; the ability to understand a new perspective of an interaction one has previously experienced. Thus, to transcend past experiences.Maturity; the ability to understand the perception of others; take what you resonate with, leave what you do not.Growth and maturity are analogous.I am not telling you how to live your life. However, if we all remain compassionate to each individual when they share their perspective on life; Listen.Understand.Respect.Did you like or dislike something they said?Yes?Kind of?No?Acknowledge the point of view of the individual is valid.Be intentional with your vocabulary when one chooses to be vulnerable enough to share their experience.Observe the beauty in a perspective different from your own.Notice the compassion you receive from others.Choose to do the same.Be as compassionate as you are with your loved ones; to everyday strangers and to yourself.Because, why not?Remaining authentic, listening and understanding, and unconditional compassion are ways to challenge the schemas we have been taught.Authenticity is following your truest journey guided by your deepest intentions during your interactions with others.Authenticity opens the door to empathy; to trust, see and hear, and to be trusted, seen and heard.Empathy opens the door to genuineness; honesty, freedom and foundation.Genuineness opens the door to effortless compassion; support and recognize the full worth of the people around you.We are all human. We are not acting in the best way we are capable of in the present moment. We must grow as individuals.Be grateful for the increase of insight and the next opportunity to make better decisions from that moment on.Acknowledge and forgive.Uncertainly, spreading compassion little by little will allow gender to be a personal journey; that will no longer be affected by the privilege, the biases, the preferences, the interpretations, the intentions, and the vocabulary of others.Sincerely, Everyday Strangers PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 8 November 26 - December 2, 2021 TV Listings TALK Your week on TV SATURDAY DAYTIME NOVEMBER 27, 2021 Bell Star 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:30 11 AM 11:30 12 PM 12:30 1 PM 1:30 2 PM 2:30 3 PM 3:30 WCAX # - - CBS Saturday Morning (N) ’ Å Lucky Dog “Petal” Innovation Nation Mission Unstop Hope in the Wild Transform NFL Championship Chase: Playoff Push Drew Pearson: A Football Life (N) ’ Å Football Drive College Football College Football WPTZ % - - (7:00) Today (N) ’ Ocean Mysteries Teen Kids News (N) The Voyager Earth Odyssey Wild Child ’ (EI) Roots Less One Team Vets Saving Pets Premier League Soccer Brighton & Hove Albion vs Leeds United.(N) ’ (Live) Å Prem Goal Zone Alpine Skiing CBMT & 206 301 (:07) Remy & Boo ’ Paddington Dino Ranch (N) Mighty Express ’ PJ Masks ’ Gary’s Magic Fort Bravest Knight (:26) Molly of Denali Our Montreal (N) Å Rugby (N) ’ Å Alpine Skiing (N) ’ Å Speed Skating (N) ’ Å CHLT _ 107 718 (6:00) Salut bonjour week-end (N) (SC) Trois fois par Bien (N) (SC) Rêvons maisons L’académie TVA nouvelles (N) 180 (N) (SC) Infopub- licité (SC) ›› “Dansez dans les rues 4” (2012, Drame) Ryan Guzman, Kathryn McCormick.(SC) “Blanche- Neige” WMTW ( - - Good Morning America (N) ’ Å Good Morning America (N) ’ Å Wildlife Nation oh baby! association, has postponed all activities, games and practices, for nearly half of its members following two COVID-19 outbreaks at Brassard-Saint-Patrice School and Sainte-Marguerite School. The decision only effects the association’s youngest players, between ?ve and 11 years old.According to Hockey Magog General Manager Ghyslain Héroux, positive cases started to pop up about 15 days ago, and they were coming from students at the two schools.Héroux received a few emails from the local health authority concerning the amount of cases. And after several discussions with the association’s leadership group, Héroux decided it was best to hit pause, rather than letting the situation escalate into something much worse. He told The Record that if all goes well, the age groups impacted by the delay will be back on the ice starting Monday. However, each of the players who contracted Covid have different timelines, so it’s a little unclear as to when they will make a return to their teams.Hockey Magog is home to about 300 minor hockey players from the surrounding area, as well as another 30 or so who travel from Stanstead to play on a weekly basis. With Quebec announcing a vaccination plan for children, Héroux is con?dent it will have a positive impact.“You can already see the difference, we stopped for about a year and half and our youths who are in peewee to junior are vaccinated and they can continue to play and they don’t have any positive cases, you see the difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated,” he said.Héroux noted that while they will try to reschedule the cancelled games, there is no guarantee that they will be able to do it.And, at the end of the day, the goal for this year is to at least reach 10 games, he explained, which would be a major step up to last year. The general manager also added that the association has been surprisingly stable when it comes to registration numbers. The bantam level has dipped, but every other level has maintained steady participation, he said, compared to other leagues in Quebec. However, there is one area that continues to bleed, which is the volunteer presence within the association. There are no more volunteers in 2021, Héroux said, adding that there are two people slated to organize the upcoming Challenge Hockey Kia de Magog Tournament.“This has been happening for years, adding Covid makes it harder, but even before it was already dif?cult. The lifestyle for parents today versus the 80s and 90s, everything goes quickly with families, people don’t take time to stop to help their organization,” said Héroux.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL not him - from vacations they take together. But not once, ever, has she mentioned my brother or posted a picture of them together. It’s as though he does not exist. When I asked her why she excludes him from postings, she says she doesn’t want to upset her family.I do not want to attend this wedding but don’t want to offend my brother.Am I wrong to be this upset that his iancee seems ashamed to publicly acknowledge him?- He Deserves Better Dear He Deserves Better: It sounds to me like you’re a protective sister who only wants what’s best for your brother and, ultimately, your family. He is lucky to have someone looking out for him the way you do.Take your concerns to the one being impacted: your brother. This situation upsets you, but it might not be one of his deal breakers.See what he says when you mention his lack of presence on her social media and ask how that makes him feel.Tell him what it looks like from an outside perspective.Your brother is likely well aware of his iancee’s family’s disapproval and might be OK with being excluded online if it makes real life ofline less stressful for him and his iancee.Hopefully, your future sister-in-law’s family will get the chance to spend time with your brother in person down the road and learn his heart and his character through and through. After all, no matter what we share or how often we post online, it’ll never tell the whole story of who we are.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! In theory, ive diamonds was a losing decision because four spades was going down; the defenders would have taken three hearts and one spade.Still, ive diamonds had not failed yet.West led a spade.South won with her ace, drew two rounds of trumps and played four rounds of hearts, discarding her two club losers. She claimed a sunny overtrick and plus 650.Maybe West should have expected his opponents to be ready for the obvious lead and selected the club ace - but that is much easier to say when you can see the full deal.If West continues with a second club, ive diamonds goes down because East has a trump trick to come.Basically, in this type of deal, you mst hope to guess well, but aggressive bids tend to do better than cautious passes.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 16 Friday, November 26, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Residences funeraries Funeral Homes a quality presence in the region TTh e Tradition of Cas Funeral H omes, • Local people to take care of local families • A courteous service in English or in French • Funeral homes near you in many municipalities 819-564-1750 | www.casshomes.ca Lennoxville, Sawyerville, Cookshi e, Richmond Rock Forest, Windsor, Stanstead, Ayer s Cliff Serving the community for over 100 years and still counting! * PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW "]
