Robinson and Greenwood were a close second. The single scull race for professionals, 144 mile with turn, was exciting from start to finish.Rogers came in the winner in 20.32 3-5, Hanlan following ten seconds later, Durnan third, Bubear fourth, and Hackett last.Hanlan claimed a foul against Rogers for crossing into his water.Tn referee will decide.YACHTING.THE ° VENCEDOR’ BEATS OTHER AMERICANS.Cleveland,Ohlo, Aug.13.—The yacht races thus far have demonstrated the superiority of the Canadian boats from Lake Ontario over the Lake Erie fleet.Comparison between the yachts of the two countries show that the American boats are more comfortably fitted up and-better adapted to cruising. It is admitted that speed has been sacrificed for comfort. But all the American skippers say they will have a chance against the Canucks in rough weather. It is admitted that the Canadian crews are better trained; besides they are thorough sportsmen and sail for honor ana place in the race.Interest to-day centred in the race for 55-footers in which were entered ‘Vencedor’ and ‘Vanenna' of Chicago, ‘Vreda’ of Hamilton, and ‘Neva’ ot Cleveland.The-starting gun was fired at 10.20 a.m., and the four yachts crossed the line almost abreast of each other.A good 12 knots breeze was blowing trom the northwest. The work of the ‘Vencedor' from the very start was splendid. She outpointed, outfooted and outsailed the ‘Vreda' and the ‘Vanenna' in the first leg.The ‘Neva’ was not in it.The ‘Priscilla’ and the ‘Crusader’ were the only starters in the class over 55 feet.‘Vencedor' led the ‘Priscilla’ around the first stake. The race developed into a great contest between these two.On the second leg the ‘Vencedor’ set her balloon Jib and the ‘Priscilla’ broke out her spinnaker. The ‘Vanenna’ carried away her topmast rounding the stake and dropped out.The ‘Priscilla’ passed the ‘Vencedor’ at the fourteen mile stake and squared away with the wind astern, the ‘Vencedor’ following and the ‘Vreda’ third. The ‘Priscilla’ fairly flew home with a cloud of canvas and crossed the line first. The ‘Ven- cedor’ finished thirteen minutes later. The ‘Vencedor' won in the 55-foot class with the ‘Vrede’ second.AQUATICS.WINNIPEG AGAIN, Saratoga, Aug.13.—The secord and concluding day of the Nasnal regatta furnished some excellent races, which were witnessed by a good-sized crowd from the Bluff overlooking the course. The day was an {deal one for aquatics. The terrible rays of the sun were veiled by fleecy clouds and a gentle breeze from the north-east cooled the atmosphere, without being sufficiently strong to interfere with the oarsmen. The honors to-day were evenly dls- tributed, Jos.J.Whitehead, of Cambridge- port, Mass., won the senior singles. The race was protested by E.A.Thompson, who claimed that Whitehcad had entered his water and crowded him out of his course.Referee Ballantyne ordered the race to be re-rowed, but Whitehead refused to row again, and it being shown that there was no foul, the race was justly awarded to Whitehead. In the intermediate singles Edward H.Teneyck, of Worcester, Mass., won quite handily. The New York ‘A.C.won the senior double shell race in great shape, but were beaten by the Baltl- mores in the senior eights. The latter rowed in fine form and had a length and al quarter to the good at the finish. The great event of the day was the international four-oared senior shell race. The famous Winnipeg crew from Manitoba pulled away from their competitors, the Riversides of Massachusetts, the Staten Islands, the Institutes of Newark and the Detroits and.crossed the line with four open lengths to spare. The Riversides, who finished second, were disqualified for having fouled the Winnipegs at the turn.and second place was given to the Staten Islands. The Institutes were third and the Detroits fourth. The prizes were distributed at the United States Hotel this evening.Summaries: — Final heat, senior singles—Won by Jos.J.Whitehead, Riverside B.C., Cambridge- port.Mass.; (2) that Little Metis is the only suitable place for such a port ; no other places possess bays sult- able for shelter in a gale or a coast suitable for beaching and repairing ; (3) the records of the last few years manifest the need of such a port, as thirty or forty cargoes are often landed at Little Metis during a season.Even the natural facilities afforded by the bay there have saved some vessels from destruction. Many vessels have gone ashore, however, and have been lost for want of better protection. The local sailing shipping is imperilled by the want of a port at this point. Many steamers have been lost in the Gulf, having to wait until assistance could be sent from Quebec, while from Metis such assistance could speedily be given.Had either the ‘Vancouver’ or the ‘Lake Ontario’ been damaged below tbe water line during the late collision they could not have been beached, and great loss of life and property might have occurred ; (4) the petition for this port is no new thing, but has been before the government for over twenty-five years, the first request having been sent to Lord Lisgar in 1871.Petitions were’ last presented to Lord Aberdeen and to the Minister of Public Works, signed by the representatives of every shipping firm in Montreal, praying that prompt action be taken. As a result surveyors were sent to Little Metis this spring, and it is understood that they have reported favorably, but the result of their investigation has not been made public. They have, it is said.stated that not only is the establishment of a port desirable but that its cost would be moderate, and the work quickly and easily effected. The immediate attention of the government to the project was asked for, and the getting apart of a moderate sum for a prompt continuance of the survey.Mr.Laurier requested that the wishes of the deputation be expressed in writing. The conference took place in the office of Mr.Robert Bickedike, Mr.B.Reford being the spokesman.— ALLEGED FRAUDULENT BILLS.The case of George Brown, painter, of Coursol street, who was arrested a week ago last Saturday on a charge of pagsing counterfeit bills, was before a special sitting of the Court yerterday, Mr.Lafontaine presiding. There appears some doubt regarding the genuineness of the two flve-dollar bills of the State of Tennessee, which the prisgpner attempted to pass. The bills are r®ported good, but the question is, is the bank to which they belong still in business.How- eyer, without taking any evidence the case be secured to examine the bills.rs AN IMPORTANT LAW POINT.An important law ppint has been raised in the preliminary objections to the contestation of the election of Mr.Legris, M.P.for Maskinonge. The petition in this case was flled in court or the forty-first day after the election, and as the.law requires such petitions to be filed withta torty days, the point to decide wiil be ‘whether the petition can be filed on: the forty-firat day, When the fortieth happens to be a Sunday.’ yas adjourned until an expert céuld.DAISY WINTER ¥YOUNDED ON Fact, (R.Shirley King, in ‘Alliance News ) The evening was closing in + 8 bitter and blustering py.ot day, and Mr.Winter, the sus.and highly-respected lawv- Ww: seated at his evening meal oo Vi vez PL 8000 sas curtains shut out the coft- landscape, and the bregnt Co played over the polisheq 1.- Flowers glowed, and siiver glass sparkled on the caret, table ; Industries for the crops of the province, under date of Aug.8: Fall wheat.—This crop, with an increased acreage, was in a falr condition when winter began. It came out in the epring in a very poor condition.A considerable area was ploughed up in all parts of Ontario, the two counties most noticeable in this respect being Pripce Edward and Haldimand. The reports of the flnal outcolue of the crop are variable and conflicting, but, on the whole, rather under than over the average.Spring wheat.—This crop is still on the decline; reports are no more encouraging than they have been for several years. The principal complaints are æs to the inferior quality, though a few sections in the east give good ylelds and first class quality.Rye.—In the east there are a few reports, some fair, but most are good.On the whole the crop is quite up to the average for quality.Oats.—The condition of oats in the west was fair. Some injury by rust and army worm is reported. In the latter case individual farmers have suffered severely, but the effect upon the total yield of the province has been very small. From the east we get reports of a large acreage and good condition. The hot weather has caused rapid filling, and some report light grain.Barley.—Along Lake Eris there is a fair yield, but the late rains have discolored a large portion. In the West Midland district the quality is better, with a fair yield. In the east the indl- cations point to a crop above the average in quality. There are prospects of a good yield.Peas.—Late sowing ‘to avoid the bug’ is more common than ever, and as a consequence there has been little harvesting done by August. There are very few poor reports. Many report a good crop.Beans.—The late rains in the southwestern part of Ontario injured the beans on low land; otherwise the crop is in good condition, although it is a little early to report definitely. The yield on well-drained land promises to be extra good.the only poor reports being as to low-lying fields.Corn.—An increased area is reported.Grubs and grasshoppers did some injury, and a few correspondents feared the army worm, but the crop was not seriously affected by insect pests. In many sections, more particularly in the Lake Erie district, conriderable damage was done by rain, but the splendid corn weather of the last three weeks has brought the plants on grandly.Flax—Only a few correspondents report regarding flax. The crop is said to be a good one, and the supply appears to be fuily up to the demand.Hops.—Very little is sald by correspondents concernings hops, and the few references made are far from favorable.Hay and clover.—The reports regarding red clover are on the whole not very favorable. The drought of the previous summer and the freezing of the past winter were both destructive.Alsike is somewhat better, but still hardly up to the average.Several speak very favorable of mammoth red clover.Timothy bas turned out better than in 1895.Potatoes.—Looks as if there will be a fair vield in most sections.Roots,—Reports regarding the root crops are somewhat contradictory. However, the prospect on the whole for roots is encouraging, and at present turnips promise better than mangels or carrots.Fruit —Not for many years has there been as great a yield of apples as in the present season. The fruit is also remarkably free from worm, and scab.Pears give a fair yield, but many trees are suffering from blight.Peaches are also abundant, and plums are up to the average, although in one.or two sections a tendency to rot is reported.Cherries were rather small, but of good quality.Grapes promise a large return in most localities, and small fruits have been abundant.Pastures and live stock.—Between the drought of June and grasshoppers, pastures were rather brown and bare until the most showery weather of the last fortnight enabled the fields to pick up.Live stock generally are in a healthy condition, although perhaps a little on the lean side. But little disease has been reported, and nothing of an epi-" demic nature. The horn fly has not yet isgppeared, but except in Perth and a few other western counties it has caused but small annoyance this summer. The milk supply has fallen off greatly, and a number of factories have closed un for lack of patronage, while the low price of cheese has had a depressing effect upon patrons.Hay will be scarce, but such supplementary fodder as corn and straw will be abundant and live stock, from present apearances, can casily be carried through the winter.‘The apiary.—Not for many years have bee-keepers so much encouragement. There has been an abundance of nectar and the flow of honev has been liberal. The average yield is about fifty-five lbs.and this will likely be augmented.Col- onles have been doubled by swarming and no disease is complained of.Labor and wages.—There is a surplus of farm laborers and wages have been lower than usual.farmers are trying to do without hired help, and are relying more upon improved machinery for help.Harvest hands have got from 75 cents to $1 per day and from $13 to $20 per month.Summary ot crops in general: wheat shows a large increase in acreage, as stated in the two previous bulletins, clthouieh 85.000 acres were ploughed in the spring: the vield is only 16.6 bushels per acre.making the total yield.a little larger than last year.Spring wheat, with a slight increase in acreage, owing to partial failure of fall wheat, gives with derreased yield per acre ‘Cutting has started at quite a few points, and with favorable weather the quality promises well. There is considerable late .wheat, and ‘if not caught with frost, we should have more wheat of No.1 quality than last year. From this you will understand I do not mean a large crop, as there was really less than 30, percent of last year’s crop, which was of No.1 quality. From present indications we figure on a crop of about fifteen million bushels or thereabouts, which is not so bad, considering the great Jisadvantages encountered at the beginning of the season, when it was almost impossible for the farmers to get in their seed owing to so much wet weather. The recent®*warm rains and hot weather have benefited the late wheat very much, bringing it forward rapidly, and if we can only bave about two weeks warm weather I think tbe wheat will be pretty safe from frost.’ ————> ‘ DOMINION ALLIANCE MEETING OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE.DEPUTATIONS TO MR.LAURIER
