Co.’s ‘Real Estate Record,” remarks that exzepting that there has been more interest manifested in real estate by a number of inquiries for properties of different kinds, there is little of significance or importance in this month's operations 10 1e cord.In other respects also the raouth’s business has been of an encouraging character. The value is greater than in the corresponding month of any previous vear, and the business has heen widely distributed over the whole range of propertiee—investments, vacant, and residential.Exchanges, which are lcok- ed upon as the usual accompaniment of a dull market, are still in evidence. There in most lines of real csitate development the business was overdone, and a return to prosperous times and activity in real estate will only tallow business conditions in all parts of the country. That this improvement is on the way is becoming more and more apparent, and there is a general feeling throughout the country that cireum- stances are combining to put Canada forward in her proper place as the country now affording the greatest inducements to settlers, and the best opportunities for investment. There has been a fair amount 5f renting and selling of houses for fall cceu- pancy, but the business in both parti culars, is still backward.Prices are at the lowest, and people intending co buy real estate in Montreal can probably do as well for themselves now as they will ever be able to do.As regards ware houses and shops, rt takes time tn change business conditions. In the dry goods, mercantile and office districts, there must be a new expansion nf business forces before the vacant stores, flats, and offices will be taken up, but when once this movement has begun end in- (nmes begin to rise, real estate will enter upon a new period nf activity. There were one hundred and fifty- seven transfers in the city warls and i town of Westmount recorded at the registry offices during the month of FARMERS.A farmer, who has every reason by tradition and instinct to favor the volunteers, and who takes especial pride in them, called at the ‘Witness’ Office this morning with a bullet. It looked like a Jæe-Metford missile—the kind that does not ‘stop’ the foe, because it goes through even two or three foemen at a time, if they happen to be in hne.The farmers in the vicinity of the rifle butts— and for a great distance beyond the bush in rear of the firing grounds—have complained that they, too, frequently hear these bullets whistle close to them when ploughing or while at other farm work. They even pick up the bullets away to the rear, in the next county.Of course, crack shots in their senses are not dangerous, as their bullets are tolerably certain to be checked by the bush in rear of the ‘butts’; yet men who fire rifles at targets are not all careful, and are not all so full of knowledge of their weapon that they keep the muaz- zle and breech in line with the target when they fire. The tendency of the rifle 1s to throw the bullet high—a tendency which requires knowledge and practice to keep in check. The bullet thrown high goes away over the bush.Being asked what he recommended as the best means of checking the danger or ‘of stopping it.the farmer said.‘The common sense of the militia officers must
