pages THE LEADING ADVERTISING MEDIUMIN THE CHATEAUGUAY VALLEY 25 cents Strike decision stays Board's motion moving closer to teacher stand by JUDY TAYLOR of The Gleaner The Protestant Regional School Board of Chateauguay this week moved closer to answering teachers’ demands for a better workload offer, but as of press time Tuesday there was no indication that this would prevent a general Hospital manager strike of Protestant teachers, set for Friday. In a last minute bid for a contract agreement the Board called an emergency meeting of its 18- member Council of Commissioners for Tuesday night, to consider a motion recommending that the Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards make a new Incompatability cited as reason for dismissal The dismissal of Luc Gregoire as general manager or the Hun- tingdon County Hospital and the local Community Service Centre on grounds of ‘‘incompatability” was announced this week.Gregoire, who came to Huntingdon from Labelle sur Quevillion in northern Quebec, had occupied the post since last February.Jon Poudfoot, president of the Huntingdon County Hospital Board.said Gregoire’s dismissal followed a special Sept.10 meeting of the hospital's administrative council when a resolution was passed to ask him to resign. That meeting was informed that Gregoire was having problems communicating with the hospital's professional staff and the administrative board on matters pertaining to the operation of the hospital.Relieved of duties Gregoire, relieved of his duties on Sept.14, chose not to resign.Instead he asked President Jon Proudfoot to issue him a letter of dismissal.Meantime, to keep administrative paper work moving Mrs.Dorothy Hawley who retired as general manager at the hospital last February, took over this week on a tempeorary basis. This, it was learned, might not Le necessary possibly for longer than the next few days.Proudfoot said that a selection committee is to be formed to interview applicants for the position. He said this process usually takes LUCGREGOIRE two to three months.According to Proudfoot.the letter of dismissal for reasons of incompatability which was requested by Gregoire would enhance Gregoir's chances of acquiring a new position when he applied to the Association of Administrators for assistance in finding a new job.At the regular monthly meeting of the Administrative Council Sept.14 a resolution of the Provisionary Board of the Local Community Service Centre was presented requesting that Gregoire receive terminal pay until Feb.1.1977.The resolution asked also that a letter of recommendation be given to the former General Manager to See GREGOIRE Page 2 Saturday night skating Huntingdon Regional Arena Manager Maurice Leboeuf this week announced that beginning Saturday there will be free pleasure skating to music at the Arena from 7 to 9 p.m.each Saturday through the winter “We want everybody to come and enjoy and see the Arena and what we are doing.’ he said.‘“Not just the youngsters but older people and if they have any suggestions we'd like to receive them.” He said the decision to designate two hours for free skating each Saturday night came from the free Arena Committee following complaints at the 75-cent charge made last Saturday night when 200 or more skated."One of our problems this year is that there is such an increase in minor hockey that we haven't much available ice time.” said Leboeuf Last vear the Arena was available at 50 cents a person or on the basis of cheaper family passes for skating on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings. This year the hockey pressures are much g reater.Leboeuf said.workload offer. The motion, proposed by Commissioner Gordon McConnell of Chateauguay, follows closely the wording of a resolution passed last week by the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, asking that Protestant teacher be given a similar offer to that accepted by Catholic teachers.Strike vote At a meeting of the Chateauguay Valley Teachers’ Association last Friday in Howick, 73 per cent of the 233 members attending voted in favor of strike action.Total membership of the union is just over 400.Across the province, 84 per cent of Protestant teachers have voted to strike.Commissioner McConnell said on Tuesday that he believed the new work-load motion would be passed. He hoped that other Protestant boards across Quebec would ‘‘stand up and say ‘enough of this’ in an effort to change the position of the QAPSB.which has up till now remained inflexible on the workload clause.“1 am not aware of any other boards planning a similar motion at this point, but I believe that it is time that we, the members of the QAPSB, should be telling that body what to do,” he said.“I'm sure our teachers will he very glad that we are doing this and that they will do everything possible to avoid a strike,” he said.‘Right direction Commented Janet Proulx: “It's definitely a step in the right direction, on the provincial as well as the local level’ Mrs.Proulx.CVTA president, is also a member of the executive of the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers.“But the only thing that can prevent the strike at this point is an actual offer from the QAPSB.The See SCHOOLS Page 8 High school children kept home Parents of French-speaking high school students in St.Chrysostome this week kept their children home from school.defying a school commission directive ordering their transfer to Beauharnois.Faced with a court injunction obtained by the Youville School Cornmission to stop the obstruction of school buses.the parents are continuing their protest against a 60-mile daily round trip for youngsters who previously attended Montpetit School in St.Chrysostome.A recent poll indicated that 742 parents were against the transfer.Only 10 in favor. But a majority of School Commissioners on the regional commission have voted for the change.Quebec Education Minister Jean Bienvenue has been asked by parents to intervene in the dispute. He has gone on record as saying that the problem should be settled locally and not by government decree.Hallowe'en giant Postmaster Jim Hutchings and wife Margaret of Athelstan crouch behind 102 pound pumpkin Jim urew in his back SECOND CLASS POSTAGE PAID AT CHATEAUGAY, NEW YORK.12920 Printed in Canada November vote The Quebec provincial election tom-toms should start hitting their deep drum-throb any instant now that there's little effort in Quebec to deny a November vote across the province is in the works. To most of us in The Valley this is hardly surprising news what with all that recent new-topping of back roads.Usually that’s a sure election sign and this time the pattern went unchanged.Remember how the trucks and steam rollers appeared in late summer and there was a good deal of scurrying to deny they were election omens? The likeliest date for the provincial vote for a variety of reasons is Nov.22.At least by then the 1976 harvest should be well in.Our sitting member, Liberal Ken Fraser.has let it be known that he won't contest Huntingdon riding in any new election. He's not so young any more. He's no longer enamored with his Assembly job in Quebec. And to him the Dundee corn country looks better every day.At least that's what his friends say while he is currently out of the country on a Far East tour This raises the big question for voters of any political persuasion in the upper Chateauguay Valley. Can they, after all these years, allow a Liberal party nomination to go to some other part of the riding? For Huntingdon area electors the Liberal nomination decision may well be as important as the result of the election vote itself The word from inside the Liberal party at the guidance level is that if the nomination moves away from the immedite area of Huntingdon this election it is unlikely ever to come back. The Sally Ann Canadians pride themselves on having a compassionate society. We support many charities and non-profit organizations that work with people needing help: the sick, the old and the very young.Nonetheless there is still a lot of deprivation, suffering and anguish within our boundaries and this is the active area of the Salvation Army.so very deserving of general support. The Army's annual campaign for funds is on now.You can help by mailing a contribution to the following area chairmen in the Dirt Dirt Cheap? The expression “dirt cheap” intimates that ‘‘dirt”’ has no value.Well its pretty hard to find anything ‘‘dirt cheap” anymore. If we really look at it “dirt” is not cheap either.Dirt, soil, earth, ground, land are all words used to bescribe the stuff we stand on.grow crops in, or wash out of the kid's ‘ans. But lets look at the value of suil or ‘‘dirt’’ if you will.It is estimated that one inch of topsoil contains 10,000 to 20.000 pounds of organic matter 1 or acre; about 700 pounds of nitrogen, 400 pounds of phosphor.us, and 600 pounds of potash. Now per pound and organic matter at 2 cents a pound, this amounts to a loss of $17.63 per acre in soil nutrients. That is, $17.63 per acre in just 1'32 of an inch of topsoil. Not really ‘“dirt’’ cheap.Added to the cost of the actual nutrient loss wiht the top soil is the cost involved in cleaning out ditches, drains, etc., that are clogged up with drifted or
