population of the Beauharnois-Salaberry riding that I am ready to run as a PC candidate in the next federal election. The decision as to when this election will he held is of course the sole prerogative of Prime Minister Looking back to the election of July & 1974, when nearly 10,000 voters gave me their support, we are now aware of a steadily increasing desire of the Canadian people to have the Progressive Conservative party as an alternative and replacement of the present Liberal government.Since the last election, I worked hard to keep alive the image of the P.C.party, without waiting for the results of the recent Gallup polls which show the new popularity of the Conservatives in federal politics. In the very short period (about three weeks) that 1 and my immediate The Gleaner, Dear Sir, I am writing this letter in the hope that your readers may have some traditional recipes or old family favorites from grana- mother or great grandmother to be included in a cook-book of the pioneer families of Hemmingford.Learning of the tood customs and dishes of the early inhabitants of Chateauguay Valley been of great interest’ to me.These settlers came from the United States, Scotland.Ireland.England and France. It is fascinating to learn how food customs are adapted and changed to be practical in a new environment.A list of the early settlers reveals that many of their descendants are still here in the same locale.the has I feel that the families of the Hemmingford pioneers could perhaps help me in my research. With the 100th An niversary of the village of Hemmingford in 1977, I would like to compile a recipe book of the early settlers of Hemmingford Would any readers please contact me if they have recipies that could be included in this book?Yours truly.Carol Petch Robin flock wintering in Hemmingford area R.R.3 Huntingdon Jan.13 The Editor The Gleaner Dear Sir: I should have written this note at least 10 days ago to report that on Jan.3rd my husband and I saw a flock of robins (12-18) on our nearest neighbour's property.Mr.Tannahill had suspected he had seen robins during Christmas week and undoubtedly this was so.Obviously some of our robins are remaining in the north during the winter and not returning early as some people think.1 have seen the robins frequently since. On Jan.3rd Mrs.Tan- nahill had a flicker picking at the mortar between the bricks on her home. Both of us have seen a flicker several times since that date.Cardinals, both male and female have been year- round residents on this road for at least six years. They are gradually spreading their range eastward and have become accustomed to the winter temperatures in our area.Amongst the more unusual winter birds sighted here recently was a Shrike though whether it was a logger-head or adult hordbean was not determined.And.finally, a brown thrasher - certainly not a winter bird - thought it too may be readapting it's living habits.Winter can certainly be as interesting a season as any other.Yours sincerely, [Mrs.] Phyllis Kennedy Howick's oldest citizen dies after fall James Stevenson Wilson Crawford.died last Dec.18 at Barrie Memorial Hospital after suffering a broken hip when he fell at his home.At 96 and seven months, he was Howick's oldest citizen. The funeral was held from the McGerrigle Funeral Home in Orm- stown to the Howick United Church, Dec.21.Rev.John S.Anderson conducted the service which included the hymn O.Come All Ye Faithful and one he Crawford had asked for a few days earlier.“God Shall Be With You.” Pall bearers saw many changes in his days in the Howick area, had been responsible for some of them, had assisted in or witnessed others. When he was a child a railroad was built across his farm home and later he watched as another railroad was built through Howick. He was born May 17.1880.at Howick.the son of Scottish-norn David Crawford and his wife Jemina Wilson who farmed the former James Wilson homestead.Crawford bought and nperated the first big threshing outfit in the Howick area and with it he thrilled youngsters for more than a decade on annual visits to farms at threshing time.It was fueled by gasoline. Two miils He had built and operated two grist mills. The first was on Lampton St.(Howick Seeds site today) and the second was across from his home at 8 Mill Road where he ran a feed began to appear Crawford added car sales to his regular work.He sold so many he was given a trip to the Thousand Islands by the manufacturer for whom he was representative. At the same time he gave driving lessons and in later life had many a hilarious story to tell of some of these excursions with his pupils. At the time of his death Crawford was the only surving charter member of the Howick Curling Club (1907) the only remaining member of the original Session of Howick United Church.and of the Building Committee of that church.charter member of the Howick Seniors Club (1962) where he continued to curl for about 10 years. The Red Cross Society presented Crawford with a long service pin and there are old timers in the Howick area today who remember him as their Sunday School at 96 own.Friend Nap Jim's running mate.from the time he was a boy, was Nap Parent of Howick, still active and six months Crawford's junior.Crawford attended Riverfield School and at a very early age showed great aptitude with his hands. He left the farm in 1907 when he moved to the village which eight years later was incorporated. Those who knew him recall that his word was his bond.He was respected by all and in turn respected his neighbors and lived in great harmony with them.He was never one to dwell on the past and was always interested in what was going on in the present, especially in all aspects of engineering. The Rev.John Anderson spoke of Crawford's vision, drive.integrity and wisdom.which made him a leader in his community and in his church.“I believe it was the character of Jim Crawford and his deep and abiding faith in God that were the most important aspects of his life’ he said during the funeral service.Among Crawford's papers one.in his own handwriting, was a copy of a poem by F.Robina Monkman ‘Sept.29, 19351 which appeared to outhne his way of life.It follows: TIECECEER IR OI HE HI a nnnnanum , God of The Years God of the years that lie behind us, Lord of the years that stretch before, Weaver of ail the ties that bind us, Keeper and King of the open door - Grant us hope and a courage glowing, White and pure as the stars above; Grant us faith in a full stream flowing Down from the heights of the changeless love.Out of the ruins of doubt and sorrow, Out of the ashes of pain and tears, Help us fashion a new tomorrow Free from the anguish of blighting fears.Build with us lest our great walls crumble, Broken stone upon useless clay.Walk with us lest our slow feet stumble, Grope and falter, and lose the way.All through the seasons of sowing quota FOR THE SAKE OF THE TIME REQUIRED TO ASSESS HIS POSITION! Despite the complications involved with the supply management system, few can deny that it has provided stability of supply to the consumer and stability of income Lo the producer. It remains that there is a certain involvement required of the producer to see that he remains in the best possible position with regards to both quota and production.x 160 = 28571 Ibs.milk x 56 = $112K,57 25% | is in response to Canadian Dairy Com- M EE AE NE EE SE EE AN CE CN AS AS OS AN ON Ces NE AE CN SE SNS A ON SE Industria! Donc,
