Chateauguay River Rehabilitation Committee on Saturday.Oct.8.1988 featured an excellent slide show and a very informative lecture on pollution hy Ormstown dairy farmer Bill Bryson.Bill went on to tell the audience of his long and pleasant association with the Chateauguay River and how he and his sons have fished and trapped for muskrats on its murky waters over the ycars. He explained to the gathering why farmers must use certain herbicides and pesticides and showed some slides of different weeds and insect pests that threaten crops in the Cha- teauguay Valley and what chemicals are used to combat them.He detailed how agricul ture has made great gains in the last few years in the field of chemical weed and insect control.and stressed that farmers always use the least possible amount of chemicals because of the very high cost of same.Next he touched on the subject of manure storage and government subsidies for manure storage systems and said that he thought it was unacceptable that manure should be allowed to run into the river. There followed some questions from the audience about manure leaking into the river and what could be done to remedy the situation. At the end of Bill's presentation he was treated to a lenghty round of applause from his audience and during the intermission he answered many questions on à person to person basis from members of the CRRC.The CRRC and myselt would like to express our appreciation to Bill for taking time from his busy schedule to come and visit with us.We hope that his visit will be followed by some other speakers and guests from our farming community. Now here are some of the highlights from the Annual General Mecting of the CRRC.It was decided that the election of officers would take place at the next mecting on Saturday, Nov.12.1988 at 10 a.m.at the Model School in Howick. It was announced that the CRRC now has 143 members. If you have been a member for a period of 12 months or more, remember that your membership is now due for renewal. It was decided by unanimous vote that a letter would be sent to the Town of Huntingdon stating the CRRC*s position that their sewage treatment plant should not be constructed on prime agricultural land and that the CRRC supports the Chateauguay Valley UPATS stand in this matter. The CRRC still has had no reply from our elected official.MNA Claude Dubois to our numerous letters to him.I wonder if he treats all letters from his constituents in this manner.Mr.Dubois.if you should happen to read this arcile, please consider this a personal invitation from the CRRC and myself to address one of our futyre meetings, to put forward your views and proposals on pollution. The fall newsletter has been sent out to Ste- Martine, St.Chrysostome, Howick, Ormstown and Huntingdon.Seven thousand copies were sent out in all.Possible future speakers are local mayors, Hugh Maynard, editor of the Quebec Farmers’ Advocate, Richard Lazure of the UPA and John Brown of ‘’When we use pesticides, the environment as a whole can be contaminated. We see degradation of the air, the soil surface, and the ground water,’ says Tardif. She adds that pesticides, wrongly used, can poison livestock and fish, and can harm beneficial insects such as bees.As well, though they are designed to wipe out insect pests, the substances may also harm a certain number of desirable plants.Under the new law, farmers will need certificates if they want to use pesticides.First of all, they will have to apply to their regional office of Environment $333.000 given to “Opportunités” by the federal government A grant of $333,000 was given to ‘Projet Opportunités’’ in Huntingdon by the federal government for their operation this year. The renewal of this grant for the fourth year in a row was announced on Monday, Oct.17 by Member of Parliament Jean-Guy Hudon, on behalf of the Hon.Monique Vezina, minister of State for Employment and Immigration.‘Projet Opportunités” will train 50 young people between 16 and 30 from the Huntingdon area, and help them get back into the job market. The 50 will be trained in five groups of 10 each, during 12-week periods. The first goal of this project, Hudon recalled, is to develop job opportunities for young people and help them gain self-reliance through theoretical training and on-the-job experience. The grant will also keep six people in the Opportunity Project on the job: a manager, a chief counsellor, a formation counsellor, two counsellors and an accounting-secretary.Dewittville W.I.discuss pros and cons of microwave cooking The October meeting of the Dewittville W.1.was held at the home of Mrs.Elizabeth McNaughton chaired the meeting and read accompanied by Mr.and Mrs.Stanley Rud- dock, motored to the western provinces in the middle of September. Here they visited their son George and his family in Salmo.B.C.They also visited a niece in Calgary. The Ruddocks visited Ella's sister in Edmonton, and a nephew in Calgary. The weather was ideal and the scenery gorgeous. They were away three weeks, and returned home on October 1.Quebec, to inform officials about what kind of pesticides they are using.Eventually, in order to get the certificate, the producer will have to pass an examination which will test his or her competence in the field of pesticide use.In addition, farmers will be encouraged to take a special course on the subject.Keeping up with the times ‘’The course won't be mandatory, but it’s highly recommended. There is a lot of new equipment constantly appearing on the market, and these courses will help farmers keep up with the new technology.and, in the long run, help them reduce the amount of pesticides they use,‘ says Tardif.Once a farmer receives his certificate.he or she must renew it every three years.During the interim period, producers will be required to participate in a certain number of information sessions or workshops in order to update their knowledge of pesticide use.If they don’t keep up with these courses, they will have to rewrite the examination.Meanwhile, government inspectors will be visiting farms to make sure that all farmers using pesticides have permits.Failure to have the document will result in a one-time warning, while a second infraction will be met with a fine. But not all farmers think this new law is a good thing.Frank Racks is a potato farmer in the Joliette area. He's been spraying his crops for 35 years. He says he’s had no problems during that time; his ground water is tested every two OT three years, and it's always tested negative, he says.“Deal with offenders only” “If there are cases in which people abuse pesticides, these people should be singled out, fined, and made an example of — not every farmer,’ says Racks. He adds that these days, younger farmers are often more conscientious than their elders when it comes to using pesticides.“They 're better educated and have often been to agricultural schools where they've been taught how to spray properly. They should be prepared, he says. But with this new legislation, the Quebec government is making sure that all farmers, yound and old, are prepared to monitor their own pesticide use. While the law went into effect last July 7.farmers won't be required to have their certificates until April 30, 1991.In the meantime, the government has implemented an interim plan.Register by November 2 All farmers must register with the Ministry of the Environment before November 2 of this year.If they don't, tey will find themselves cut off from acquiring any pesticides from dealers in this province.
