[" The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same 1 time.THE HUNTINGDON GLEANER THE LEADING ADVERTISING MEDIUM IN THE DISTRICT OF BEAUHARNOIS EIGHTY-EIGHTH YEAR HUNTINGDON, QUE., WEDNESDAY.AUGUST 1st, 1951 Brutal Triple Murder at Anderson’s Corne Culprit Gives Himself Up Few Hours After To Police In Montreal Trio - 2 Men and Woman All Aged, Terribly Beaten | The citizens of Huntingdon were aroused when they heard of the brutal slaying of three elderly people at Anderson's Corners, during Monday night. The news slowly began to leak out, but it was not until several broadcasts over the radio were heard that it became generally known og Tuesday morning.By that time police from Montreal had visited the scene of the crime and had the case well in hand.Fortunately, the police's work was made easy, for the culprit gave himself up and this was really the first time that the police knew of the murder, which was then only a few hours old.A man walked into a Montreal police office in the early hours of Tuesday morning and said he had killed three people and told where.Immediately the police got in touch with the police at Ormstown, Lionel Chartrand.who in turn phoned Constable Le- duc at Valleyfield. They then went to the scene of the crime and discovered the bodies of the three people in a shed at the rear of the little store owned by two of the victims. It was a particularly ghastly sight which met the cyes of the arrivals and showed that a very brutal murder had been committed of three elderly, and no doubt, inoffensive people. The victims were Aristide Allen, age 67 years; Ce- zarie Johnson Allen, his wife, age 74 years and Narcisse Cusson, a neighbour.age 72 years. The two Allens had received terrible blows and wounds on the head.while Cusson had been stabbed many times.in the body.So badly had the Allens been wounded that it married before.Martin is a married man with a wife and four children, his address being given as R.R.1, St.Henri de Mascouche, L'Assomption County. After the crime, as was stated above, he went to Montreal and gave himself up to police and stated what had happened. The police in some reconstruction of the case and with help of some confession from the accused, believe that this is what happened.Martin.who is a private in Cun- ada’s Royal 22nd Regiment, slated for overseas service and on leave, went to visit his grandmother at her little store at Anderson's Corners. It is hard to say just what happened when he arrived.but police believe the motive was robbery as the rooms at the rear of the store were all ransacked and upturned as though a search had been made for something. On the other hand there is a possibility that a quarrel took place over something. In any case thev believe that the accused enticed the old couple, perhaps singly, to the shed at the rear of the store and here made an attack on Mr.Allen first which resulted in his death. The wife hearing the commotion may have gone out to see what was the matter and then she was attacked and murdered.Mr.Narcisse Cusson.a neighbour of the Allens and living in a house only 75 feet away, was also probably aroused by the disturbance and he jtoo came to find out what was Basil Kelly to Attend Grange Leadership School attend Economics, Cobleskill, N.Y.The subjects include: ciples of Leadership”: Speaking, Program Planning Parliamentary Procedure, structor, and also on Ritualism.James Norris Theatre.tics which can be spontaneously by small groups matics.Maple Leaf Grange.Malone Grange ed.Farm Merit Contest Judges Are Announced QUEBEC, ister | roine on.Thus he fell a victim to the vicious attack of the murderer.| i To substantiate this are la few facts that were discovered at: theory was hardly possible to recognize the scene of the crime.First there thev had faces. The bodies were ‘Were no signs of a struggle in the piled one on the other like sacks rae oF ore.nor ve Jere any and they lay in a pool of blood stains y © .S$ in front of a car ha a shed nt to suggest thar the victims had been the rear of the little store. With Attacked in the house. The blood- the two policemen were Ernest and | Stains were found right where the Arthur Allen, sons of Aristide Allen, ' victims themselves were found - Valleyfield was first established it has built up a fine reputation for itself. The standards of education required of its pupils have been such as to fit these boys and girls to go out into the world and make names for themselves.Such standards and such achievements have helped to make the name of Gault one that stands out in the education field.A few years ago several additions were made to this school which gave it additional facilities and benefits, but still thev were not adequate nor were they as complete as found in some other schools around.Gault still lacked sufficient classroom space and it had no assembly hall for games, cte. While the protestant population in Vallevfield has decreased, the student population for Gault has been on the increase and the classrooms have been used for teaching more than one class. It has therefore become imperative that more accommodation be provided. It was thus that steps were taken to secure assistance to provide for the building of a To Gault Institute new addition to take care of demands.Gault Institute has been fortunate in securing the assistance required and in consequence the required addition is now well on the way to being an actual fact. The ceremony of laying the cornerstone of the new structure was carried out this past week and it is hoped that the addition will be ready to be occupied within a few months. This will provide additional classrooms, a gymnasium and other facilities which will make Gault one of the most up-to-date of modern schools. The Gleaner wishes to join with the Board of Commissioners, the school staff and the taxpavers in their expressions of joy in this accomplishment, for education is a great thing in these davs. Its importance cannot be stressed too highlv and with the reputation that Gault has attained.we feel sure that these added facilities will do much for the future generations. We therefore take great pleasure in offering congratulations to all who are interested in this school and to express the hope that students and staff will gain much more from the enlargement.A Matter For Serious Thought A matter that should receive some serious thought, yet when brought to public attention is passed to onc side as something that just happened.or will not bear being talked of is, the large number of attacks on women and girls and even young children. One horrible incidence has been brought home to us this week in the case of the little girl who was brutally murdered at Verdun by a sadistic young man.We have read where women and girls were lured into taxis on the outskirts of Montreal, robbed, beaten and criminally attacked.Fortunately the ones responsible for these crimes were apprehended after a lapse of time. But this sort of thing is on the uptrend and much of it concerns luring or enticing little girls. In one other case recently a little girl was thrown out of a car in a dazed condition and finally made her way home in serious degree of health.A week or two ago we reported in this newspaper the case of minor Raving carnal knowledge.this week we report a case of criminal assault involving a little girl. Thus this sort of thing is creeping in our community. The police are doing what they can.but thev are not always able to prevent the acts.it is only after they have happened that it is known about.Sometimes that is too late.for a body of some loved one may be found and a foul deed has been committed. We can only sav that parents should warn -is before and not after.their children and especially the girls.to be careful who they go with and not be enticed away with promises or gifts of any kind. This is so with strangers in particular and even with those with whom the children may be acquainted, unless they are people who are very well known to all members of the family. The older women and girls should be better able to take care of themselves and their own common sense should warn them not to accept offers of a lift from strange persons at any time or anywhere. This is especially so if the person offering the lift happens to be alone. We are not suggesting that there is any great need for alarm in this district.but merely that precautionary measures should be taken at all times no matter where one may be at the time. The time of prevention One must be on the alert wherever they may be for it is never known where the sadistic person may turn up.Children are particularly susceptible for they are more trusting of people and casily won over by gifts unless firmly warned of such things beforehand.Precautionary methods are always advisable and it is only in this sense that this article is written. We have no desire to publish such stories as have appeared in Montreal newspapers us well as many others in recent months and we hope we shall never have to.Should We Feel Sorrow?OR some time it had been hinted that Marshal Petain was slowly ncaring his death and the past week that death was announced.Petain died while under sentence as a traitor to his country, France, he was accused and found guilty of collaborating with the Nazis at the time of the {fall of France in the early days of the last war. There were many who felt compassion for this poor old man who was left to make a decision for his country. It must be remembered that France had been in a state of more or less chaos for several years before the Nazis invaded the country. It had a government one minute and none the next, there were a series of riots in one part or another and at times it was in almost a state of country-wide revolt. Then Hitler and his hordes decided they would start out on their campaign of taking over the countries of Europe.France was confident that its maginot line could never be penetrated and that the country was practically safe from attack if it should *come.Unfortunately, the country was in a state of internal turmoil when Iitler decided to attack.Petain was the head of the government at Vichy and therefore he was the unfortunate wretch that had to make the decision. He had scen his country overrun before.he had fought against the same enemy on several other occasions and he knew the devastation that would result in resistance.Further the type of resistance that could be offered was of the poorest.Great Britain had been driven into the sea, Italy was on the side of the enemy, other bordering countries had been defeated.Taking stock of what he had to deal with, was he really very wrong.when he decided that it was better to deal with the enemy in surrender?Once having surrendered, what could he do?No one will perhaps cver know if this old man really and rly gave France to the Germans or whether he actually saved France from a worse fate.It seems practically certain that if Petain had announc- cd his intention of fighting to the finish, that France would have suffered almost entire demolition. Many more of its people would have been murdered and its recovery would not have been as rapid as it turned out to be.Sometimes the hero is not always the one who shows the most courage, in fact there may be a show of apparent cowardice. Is it possible that Petain, a well known soldier of France suddenly turned cowardly. We see an old man wearied by his country being continually submitted to wars and devastation, people losing their lives and being driven from their homes. We sce him looking at an apparently hopeless situation and then taking the easiest avenue of escape, not for himself.but for France. The people of France looked at it differently.so they have denounced him as a claim made in an article that appeared in Pravda ol April 26, entitled “Data on Human Longevity.” Exjensive work on the registration of long-living inhabitants of the Soviet Union is said to have been carried on at the Scientific Research Institute of Biology in Kharkov State University.A unique card index of longevity.composed of several thousand cards with detailed information of people 90 years and over.has been collected for the last 20 years. The index 1s supplemented by about 2.000 photographs. These data are said to be “of immense interest for Soviet science.” Prof.A.V.Nagorny, author of a book, “The Problem of Old Age and Longevity,” is in charge of the card index. In an interview he is quoted as saying: “The opinion existed until recently that favorable conditions for reaching an advanced old age obtain only in Abk- hazia, where 212 people over 100 years are living. There even appeared ‘theories’ of the very great saturation of the air of Abkhazia with ultraviolet rays as the main cause of longevity.” Abkhazia has a4 subtropical climate and is situated on the Black Sea coast. But “Comrade” Nagorny flouted the ultraviolet theory.“The card index," he sald, “shows that the whole Soviet Union is a land of longevity.Favorable conditions for the prolongation of life have been created in our country,” and he proceeded to give the following amazing examples: “The oldest person In the Soviet Union, according to the card index, is a Russian collective farmer.Vas- ily Sergeyevich Tishkin, born in 1808 .The oldest woman is Kazamyan Khanum, a 127-year-old inhabitant of the town of Turk- menia. Her youngest son is 80.The long lived citizens have many children and relatives. For example, Mahmud Eivazov, 142-year-old member of the Young (sic) Communist League Collective Farm, Lerik District, Azerbaldzhan.has 118 sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great- great-grandchildren.His wife is 120, his daughter Dala is 100.There are in the Soviet Unlon about 30,000 men and women centenar- lans.” Commenting on record, “There are few examples of such + This revolutionary new method is the brain child of designer Mrs.N.Jarvis Allen, who in the last wur rose in the women's naval service to become « Lieutenant-Command- ‘er in charge of all Wrens on the \\west coast. She now breeds pekingese and grows flowers in Highland Creek, outside Toronto.Briefly, the method is this. The leg and instep are knitted in one piece, but vertically instead of hori- ‘zontally and with two needles. The ribbed panel for the back of the (leg, heel and sole are also knitted on two needles. The sole is then joined to the instep piece and the toe is knitted on three needles.KR 3 Los Color and interesting designs can be introduced without using, bobbins or tying ends as in the making of diamond socks.Leftover wool can be used in the instep piece, and color patterns are simple for beginners, often afraid to attempt fancy designs.Using her new method, Mrs.Allen has designed two patterns especially for the C.N.E, calling them “Grandstand” and "Midway".“Grandstand” is a ribbed stitch, giving a cable effect, to suggest the rows of seats in the grandstand, while “Midway” is done in squares suggesting the many concessions in Above is a photograph of Mr.and Mrs.Aristide Allen, of Anderson's Corners, who were the victims of a particularly brutal murder together with a neighbour, Narcisse Cusson, who was the third victim. This picture was taken in 1942.Mrs.Allen was 74 years of age and Mr.Allen was 67 years The story of the crime appears in this issue.the midway.Three demonstrators will be available all day each day of the Big Fair to explain step by step of the new method.Brutal: Slaying .Continued from page 1 that Mr.Cusson was attacked as he made his way toward the shed and was carried or dragged into the shed and placed on top of the other victims after the foul crime had been committed.Unlike the other two victims, Cusson was BIG PROJECT SMITHS FALLS, Ont, (CP)— Under construction for 18 months, Smiths Falls $250,000 sewage disposal plant now is in full opera- slightly bowed and a somewhat solemn appearance, neither glancing from left or to right.Once one of the officials came over and whispered something in his ear, to which he nodded his head.Newspaper camera men took several flashlight photographs and he always tried to keep his head down.He was neatly dressed in a khaki military looking shirt and striped : a | local representative at| Mr.Edgar Hebert, M.L.A., for | itute stands tion.More than a mile of new \\stabbed several times in the chest |trousers and bareheaded.Following as adjutant and Mn officer Velleyfield in February.1940.He Beauharnois addressed the gather- cha tan, School Board Las oe Se Cas interest trunk sewers were built into the and body, whereas the other two |the closing of the hearing, he was ae eke from 1940 to 1046, succeeded to the managership BE pond was Introduced by the| Upon the occasion of the laying in Protestant education in Valley-|solid rock foundations of Smiths had their heads badly smashed |immediately taken back to Mont- He was also adjutant at the for Valleyfield and vicinity In @iaicnin Falls for the big undertaking.in as if they had been kicked or |real.of the annex, hown in 1900 b help and assistance ne [or the corner stone ‘field was further s y ; nex | p re i is ir m mL es minuni ir ar 0) which is to house the long-antie- his setting aside a fund to provide struck with a heavy weapon of| Among the spectators in the court- for 16 his retire ent from the!
