Howick (By Mrs, J A delightful tea, held on Saturday afternoon, April 10, in the United Church Hall, marked the 50th anniversary of CGIT.The 1965 ginls and their leader, Mrs.W.Hudson, had done a great deal of preparatory ‘work and it wasn't easy as some of the minutes are missing, They regret any omissions that may have heen made because of this loss.Dozens of invitations were mailed to points far and near and at least 65 former members were present, The church hall was gay with streamers, the crest, and balloons: in the C.G.IT.colours, blue and white, Spring - flowers-added bright touches: A pot of pink hydrangea was in memory of Eileen Ness, The table centre came with the compliments of John Smith of Smith Bros., Florists Longueuil. The guests in groups of seven or cight sat around small tables, centered with spring flowers.an ideal arrangement for reminiscing. The Pres.Carolyn Temple.ton welcomed everyone and conducted the programme.Cathy Gruer and Joy McKell led the opening worship service with Mrs.Hudson as pianist, An interesting history of the group was given by Pam Miller and Faye McKell. As the years go by the meaning of some words may change, su it was rather startling to hear from minutes of the 1930’s that the girls were iry- ing to find a “suggestive” name for the group.Mrs.A.B.B.Moore, the Minister's wife and leader of the group, proposed an original name, Siloki, taken from the first two letters of three words, Sincerity, Joyalty and Kindness. It was approved, accepted and bas been used since that time. There was a périod of reminiscence when the first icader, Mrs.James Bruce, re- fated some amusing and interesting incidents in connec: Black Captures Bonspiel Elmer Black who last year skipped his Howick Curling Club rink to the Provincial Championship, added another curling triumph to his record hook Saturday by winning the first Quebec Open Bonspiel.Black and his rink of Fred Letto, Kirk Nussey and John Logan won the Hammond's Sir George Wil liams University rink 85.In the C event, Bob Lahaie skipped his Cap-de-la-Mede- leine foursome to that divisional title. The C Consolation was won by Fred Mayers of Bonaventure in an 7-6 battle with Ray Paré of Glenmore.Outremont Curling Club won the D.Division while Harry Lewis of Ottawa took the E section title.Crawford) tion with the work.Mrs.Roy Younie, the second leader, added some of her experiences.Camp life seemed to be remembered most clearly by both leaders.Jean Stonehouse presented the National 50th Anniversary project — “To Indonesia first president, complimented the ginls on their fine programme and thanked them sincerely for extending such a kind invitation to former members and friends.Mrs.James Bruce, first leader, and Mrs.Melville Brown, first president were invited to pour tea which the girls served dainty sandwiches and squares. Before the programme Mrs.Hudson thanked everyone who had contributed in any way to this 50th anniversary and read some of the many notes that had been received including one from Mrs, A.- B.B.Moore.95 ladies signed the guest book, a gift from Mrs, Melville Brown.Pictures were taken Th STAR {-B0Y educed & aicher d.rdon er 1er gl Editorial Notes.Easter Again ASTER, a festival in honor of the Goddess of Spring and in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It has great significance in the life of the Christian, perhaps even more so than Christmas, because it was actually the founding of Christendom. While some Christians began to appear after the birth of Christ it was not until the death of Christ on the Cross that the disciples actually went forth into all the world to teach the gospel. It was then that Christians were condemned to all sorts of tortures and death for their beliefs. Why did Christ die on the Cross? It was to save the world from the sin into which it had fallen.God gave His only begotten Son that all may be saved from sin.Christ was the redeemer.Previously, God had destroyed the world by flood. The Ark with Noah saved two of each kind on this occasion.Since the death of Christ, the world has been struggling to live a life close to the example set down by Christ during His life on earth. It is one of the hardest examples to follow and there are few who do not succumb to temptation of one kind and another ‘wt some time.In this way they fall short of being a true Christian.Christ, Himselt was tempted on many occasions, but he called upon his Father in Heaven to give him strength to cast the Devil aside. We mortals do not yet have that great strength to overcome the temptations fhat beset us.In fact there are many of us who fail completely and accept the Devil- It would seem that at this Easter time, the world once more is in a great state of sinning and hardly one country is immune from it.A threat is held over the entire world by the possible eruption of nuclear warfare.Every time even a small eruption seems imminent, thoughts turn to the possibilities of unleashing the terrible weapons that are being held in storage by several countries today. All are afraid to release them for fear of the terrible consequences of such action. This is surely the invention of the Devil. There is terrible hate in many sections of the world directed against this and that race of people, and all these people are the children of God.We see every day ac: counts of injuries and hardships inflicted upon these people for some reason or another. We hear of uprisings to assert the rights of people who are being spurned due to something that another sect does not approve. It is here in Canada; it is in the United States; it is in England; it is in the Congo; in Vietnam and in many other parts of the world. In Vietham, we have a state of war that could be likened to another Korea.Slaughter of peoples is going on with the threat that this could develop into a full scale war. There is corruption and rift in high governmental places in many countries of the world.Greed and Power grip many of those who should be leaders for the good of all mankind. They are falling to the wayside by a lust.Crime is prevalent to a greater extent than ever before.Good- time Charlie pervades the world in many guises from the young unto the old.Wine, dance and song is as much, or more in evidence, as when Nero fiddled while Rome burned.Yet, this is Easter. It is the time when we sorrow for the death of Christ, condemned to that suffering and slow death by one who betrayed him.Suffered that humiliation and slow death because of fear of the people that their power would be taken from them if He would be allowed to live and keep up His teachings.Have we learned anything?Have we improved over the past almost 2,000 years?Take a look around and then ask if we are progressing. Then ponder on the state of the universe as compared to the days before Christ, Tax Increases For Quebec A cent here and a cent there, can add up to an appreciable increase in the cost of living for the average Quebecer, following Thursday's budget presentation bv Premier Lesage in the Quebec Legislature, The Government was ever an ln- dian giver.Stretching out the one hand with tempting morsals with a large FREE on them, while the other hand pushed deep in the pocket of the receiver to take out’ the cost of same. With the presentation of this budget, we are about to realize that we shall be paying for all that we shall receive and perhaps a “little to boot” as well. The report on the budget reveals that the people will once again be called upon to dig down and pay up.It is tendered to the public in a soft pedaled fashion, that most of the increases in taxes are on luxury items. One of these being gasoline, It is doubtful today if gasoline can be considered a luxury item, because of the wide use to which the automobile is put, it has become almost a necessity, The tax one cent on each gallon, does not sound very much, “only a cent’ we will hear people say.But on ten gallons it is 10 cents, on 20 gallons it is 20 cents.it looks a little different in that light.Over a few months the increase is into the dollars. That tax alone is going to hit practically everyone and businesses too. When it hits the costs of business, there is going to be a round of increases in prices and that is going to hit everyone too.It is also going to cost 6 per cent more as a tax on long distance telephone calls in this province. That is going to hit a number of citizens and certainly all types of business. It could lead to many firms accepting phone calls now, not receiving them after this tax is imposed. This could mean increases for the citizen, or a slowing up in business transactions. If the firms absorb the increased cost, then price hikes could easily follow. It is not just a matter of a cent or two tax, it is the repercussions it can cause. The pay check will be reduced and this could lead to a round of requests for pay increases and especially in view of the recent increases in the cost-of-liv- ing index. In the matter of the 6 per cent sales tax, it does not appear that there is any better equitable distribution in the new formula. We are of the opinion that School municipalities should have a share of this tax and so the urban _ fax.“payer could have Sime relief on the school taxes as well as the farmer. In addition to this tax, municipal councils are to receive the whole of the amusement tax levy, so this will provide another 50": of this levy for the municipal coffers. It is also said that the municipal councils will receive an even greater share of the 6% sales tax.In view of that, we feel the School Boards should be entitled to a share, The cost of schools today is far outweighing the cost of municipal services and upkeep.in that way, grants could be cut back and some of the need for increases in taxes could be reduced. If taxation keeps on increasing, it is going to be a deterrent to industries locating in this province, rather than an incentive.Industries here will not be able to compete with those of other provinces, or they will be working at a loss. The gross national product may be increasing, but if taxation becomes too much of a burden, it wont take long before there is a reverse. At the same time this increase in taxation is not going to balance the budget there is still to be a large deficit, The plum being offered is that the people are to have free out-patient service at the hospitals.Note that word FREE.Taxes on the following came into effect as of midnight Thursday, April 8th: Cigarets (25s), Tobacco and cigars; Gasoline and diesel fuel oil.Further tax increases fo come on May Ist: Hotel, Motel and Resort Rooms; Long distance telephone calls and telegrams and telecommunications; on meals and liquor in restaurants, hotels and motels, and on outside food deliveries.Canadian Library Week HIS week, April 10th to the 17th is ' is not quite true that 1 have never painted a house. At the same time, it is not quite true that 1 have painted a house, Let me explain. One summer in a period of acute mental depression, ! spent my officially ordered to take part.At a hear ing on March 9, the Market: ing Board heard its reasons for refusal. They stressed the importance of quality, and, in the words of the brief, “it reduces prices to the effi cient producer, and removes the incentive for improve: ment in quality”.However, producers shipping to other dairies say that the opposing dairy is able to pay more only because it has relied on the surplus plant for its reserve supply of milk — at their expense.Whatever the outcome of this issue, it appears more than ever that price equalization is here to stay in the Montreal milk-shed.Here is the second part of Peter Hamilton’s report on the confused situation and his explanation of price equalization which we started last week.“The price equalization plan was developed and put into effect by the Producers’ Board — a group made up mainly of farmers and granted broad legal powers under Quebec's Agricultural Marketing Act in the interest of the joint marketing of milk. The Producers’ Board negotiated the plan with the Montreal dairies and operates the price equalization plan now in effect. The Producers’ Board appears in The Gleaner with this edition.will be a weekly feature which we trust will be of interest to all in the Chateauguay Valley.works under the Marketing “COUNTRY NOTEBOOK" BY WALKER RILEY sti- oulate the plant or plants to which all the surplus milk not used hy the dairies is to he sent.Under the equalization nlan, the Producers’ Board has named the Montreal Milk Producers’ Cooperative the plant to receive the excess milk.“Opposition to the plan comes mostly from those producers who were getting more milk on the fluid market under the old scheme and there are lots of them. Many of them argue that it is their good fortune they happen to be shipping to a dairy that utilizes a big proportion of milk for the hottle trade, and that it is not fair for them to he paid on the basis of the average utilization of all the dairies.“Another main bone of contention is the price of excess of surplus milk. The Producers’ Board stipulates that all excess milk goes to the Montreal Milk Producers’ Cooperative. In February, it brought only $2.50 cwt- for 3.47 butterfat milk, a price too low to make most producers happy. Some argue that the surplus should be able to go to the plant that will pay the most.Others go so far as to say the Cooperative and the Producers’ Board are too closely associated and that the whole equalization scheme is desig: milk.“But there are good arguments for price equalization, too, and there are farmers who are supporting it even though their milk checks are down $60 or more hecause of it “It eliminates the price paid for milk between dairies, and supporters of equalization say it is the only fair way.One farmer, who served as director of the Producers’ Board, put it this way: “It's no fault of the milk producer if the dairy he happens to ship to sells less milk to the fluid trade than others”.The Producers’ Board is confident that to some extent, at least trucking costs can he reduced under the system.Because equalization means the same return regardless of which dairy gets the milk, it won't matter which dairy a producer’s milk goes to.It seems logical that routes that are served now ‘by three or four truckers carrying milk to as many dairies might be served hy one truck going to one dairy”.Remember that cheerful lit tle item, “What is a
