Quen- neville, and others, described this past Sunday. We agree, to a point. That point is that it was a great day for the (O'Connor family and all of their friends and relatives … and it was also à great day for all in the County of Huntingdon. We refer.of course, to Bishop Hubert O'Connor, 0.M.1.Last Wednesday evening more than one hundred Oblates of Mary Immaculate including arch-bishops.bishops, priests and religious brothers took part in the episcopal ordination of Bishop Hubert Patrick O'Connor at St.Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Vancouver. On Sunday.at 11 a.m.Bishop O° Connor said his first Pontifical mass at S¢.Joseph's Church here in Huntingdon where he said his first mass after being ordained a priest on June 12, 1955.As on St.Patrick's Day, everyone was Irish on Sunday.evidenced by the fact that Father Georges Quenneville remarked that he had never seen his church so well filled in 26 years (when he first came to Huntingdon as an assistant to the late Father Pigeon). If Father Quenneville had been able to see outside during the Pontifical Mass, he would have perceived many people standing at the entrance to the church .even on the sidewalks.Bishop Hubert O'Connor hasn’t changed nearly so much as recent photographs which appeared in this newspaper led most of us to expect. In his own words."At my age | won't grow taller which leaves only one other way to grow physically and you better believe I'm watching that carefully.” Everyone is proud and happy for His Excellency Hubert O'Connor and the many people who attended the reception for him at Notre-Dame School auditorium had other reasons to feel pleased. The Catholic Women's League of St.Joseph's Parish prepared and served dainty refreshments; Mayor Claude Pilon presented a cheque to His Excellency and in brief but well chosen words stated that the Town of Huntingdon was proud of Bishop Hubert O'Connor; Church Warden Lewis Neville also presented a cheque to His Excellency on behalf of St.Joseph parishioners.Ken Fraser, M.N.A.Huntingdon, stated that both town and county felt honored that a native son had been chosen to be consecrated; Gerry Brisebois, a brother-in- law of Bishop O'Connor who is also Grand Knight of Huntingdon Council 3957, conveyed congratulations to the Bishop who is also an active K.of C.member.Monseigneur J.A.David stated that he had been relieved of my duties 21; years ago because of my advanced age’ but that he well remembered the Bishop when he first came to Huntingdon, back in 1954-55, and said how pleased he was to be present at the Bishop's first Pontifical Mass.As stated, it was a great day for the Irish, especially those of the Irish Ridge .but we say it was a great day for everyone in the County of Huntingdon.Bishop Hubert O'Connor left yesterday (Tuesday) for Vancouver and on Friday will be at Whitehorse, Yukon. With him go the best wishes of not only St.Joseph Parish and his friends and family, but of everyone ‘here at home’.~ Better Communications Our Quebec government is absolutely the greatest {or telling each and everyone of us how to improve communications but when it comes to practicing what it preaches, the government is the first to fall flat on its face.Especially Hydro-Quebec.All news media receive countless communications containing propaganda concerning this government-owned utility service, but - try to contact Hydro-Quebec in time of power failure and one might as well curl up his toes and breathe his last then and there for all anyone at Hydro- Quebec would care. It's a shame.Nothing less.We don’t know if all areas serviced by Hydro-Quebec are accorded similar treatment, but we do know that when there is a power failure in the Chateauguay Valley that company doesn't want to hear about it.How many readers have tried to telephone Hydro-Quebec during or following an electrical storm only to hear that buzz-buzz-buzz which indicates the line is busy?Asking assistance from the operator is also useless. All she can report is “It's a good number.keep trying".The truth of the matter must surely be that when storm clouds gather receivers are lifted off the phones at Hydro-Quebec., Last Saturday the same incot.sideration was manifest. As everyone is aware, that was a windy day.Until well after sunset.one could almost say there was a gale all day.Branches fell and in a few instances.trees toppled.Near the intersection of King and Dalhousie in Huntingdon, a fairly large tree fell, blocking traffic. Both phone and power lines went down with the tree.Power was interrupted from 8:10 until 10:30 a.m.during which time many calls were received at the police station.Police Chief Joffre L'Heureux and his officers investigated and it was they who moved the tree in order to allow traffic to pass.Live wires remained dangling from the branches or lay on the street though, a possible hazard for pedestrians, especially children.Chief L'Heureux was called away and it was neccessary for him to detail a special constable to warn people of the possible danger. Now, what we belleve to be unfair is the fact that a number of citizens attempted to contact Hydro-Quebec by dialing the number listed in the telephone directory.Their efforts were in vain. The police chief did likewise with the same resuit and it wasn't until he phoned a Hydro-Quebec employee at his home that there were results. What we'd like to know is this: *‘Is there a valid reason for Hydro-Quebec closing up like a clam whenever there is a power failure?" Let's face it, we're at the stage where our very welfare is dependent upon electricity. We not only use it for illumination but we work with it, heat with it and some of us even sleep with it.We're like fish out of water every time the service fails. We also pay for the electricity we use, even taxes. Can't we expect Hvdro-Quebec to answer their phones? At least during regular working hours? It is our contention that a number to call for emergencies should also be listed.Failing this.we believe police.fire departments and other municipal authorities should be supplied with a number to call in case of emergency.Fortunately.nobody was injured by the wires that fell here on Saturday and neither did fire result but there was inconvenience and frayed tempers.Does everyone at Hydro-Quebec go home at five o'clock and leave calis unanswered until nine the next morning or on weekends until nine on Mondays? If so, maybe we should investigate the possibility of only paving for electricity used while their staff is on duty.Even a recorded message stating ‘The power interruption is temporary and repairs are being made.vou may expect service to be resumed in ‘x’ hours’ would be better than ‘Sorry.there is no service at the number you have just dialed" at one of the numbers listed now.Our ‘government wishes to maintain communications in time of national disaster and has spent much money in organizational work to this end.Fine and dandy.but how about spending a few dollars so that we may report unusual circumstances such as trees falling across power lines? And surely a recorded message as suggested when service is interrupted by electrical storms would be better than a busy signal?Any cock-and-buil reply to the effect that this service could be made available but will cost consumers mare money would be for the birds. We doubt if there are more than a handfui of government offices which operate efficiently because they employ an excess of man hours .the answer would be to allocate work loads more efficiently.Letters to The Editor RR 2 Franklin Centre.December y, 19471 The Editor The Gleaner Dear Sir: It was quite blessing.Anyone who deliberately endangers his own life or the lives of others, is either drunk, under the influence of drugs or mentally ill. With all the tremendous advances which have been made in Canadian Branch, of a Life Member Certificate with the Branch, and a special medal, to R.Bruce Ness.Mr.Ness, a 50 year plus member of the Howick Club, although taken by surprise, thanked everyone who was responsible for this gesture and responded by reminising through some of his fondest memories of his curling years, but added, that he hoped that he would be curling for some time to come.Since the time of organized school-boy curling some 20 years ago, Bruce has always been ‘*‘the kindly old coach” to district school boys, and has made some remarkable showings. In 1970, his Logan, representing all school boys that Bruce has coached, and Stu Taylor, District Branch representative, Oakley McRae, President, on behalf of the club, presented Bruce with a plaque in
