number of n rs, including The Gleaner / La Source last week, reported that hundreds of trees had been cut down at the Lake St.François National Wildlife Area in the municipality of Ste.Agnès-de-Dundee this past February without prior approval from the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Haut Saint-Laurent MRC offered a one-page (French only) written statement at its monthly MRC meeting in Huntingdon last Wednesday evening May 10th.The statement was not discussed during the MRC meeting, but was readily available as a hand-out to all participants attending the MRC meeting.Elected officials also made no declarations concerning the content of their statement during or after the MRC meeting.The Haut Saint-Laurent MRC administrative committee, which consists of Saint- Anicet mayor and prefect Alain Castagner, Saint-Chrysostome mayor and vice-prefect Gilles Bigras, Très Saint-Sacrement mayor Albert Billette, Ormstown mayor John McCaig and Ste-Barbe mayor Jean- Claude Chantigny, said in their statement that they want to \u201cclarify certain elements.\u201d According to the administrative committee\u2019s statement, \u201cnearly 33%\u201d of the work ordered to be done by the Haut Saint-Laurent MRC took place on private agriculturally zoned land beside the Lake St.François National Wildlife Area.In addition, the swath of cut trees found inside the Lake St.François National Wildlife Area is limited to \u201cabout 440 metres and not 650 metres in length,\u201d which is equivalent to \u201ca tiny part of the Reserve, a fraction of 1%.\u201d Also, instead of 460 trees being cut down that was reported in the newspapers, there were actually only \u201cabout 300\u201d saplings with the majority of them having trunk diameters of less than 10 cm.The Haut Saint-Laurent MRC administrative committee also asserts that the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada does not consider butternut trees to be an endangered species at the Lake St.François National Wildlife Area.In their statement, the MRC administrative committee says they respected the law that governs how they must ensure that all water adequately drains from the region\u2019s streams and that the work that was done at the Lake St.François National Wildlife Area last February entirely respected that law.In addition, \u201ca qualified entrepreneur\u201d did all this work that is now being Changing cancer\u2019s course For the last 26 years, I have often claimed there will never be a cure for any disease where the symptoms can be alleviated by high-priced medications.And for the same amount of time, my endocrinologist, neurologist and oncologist have all repeatedly told me I am hardheaded.But honestly, when was the last time you ever heard that a chronic health condition was completely eradicated in North America?Far from being a gloomy Gus, to the surprise of many I am still determined to find a reason to smile despite dealing daily with uncompromising health hurdles.It\u2019s not about painting myself into a corner as a victim.Instead it needs to be about all of us learning how to play the health hand we are dealt.Some are healthy, others aren\u2019t.More simply put, some should be grateful they are healthy and take better care of themselves before they aren\u2019t.I admit some days I don\u2019t play the game well and that\u2019s when I reach out to my network of support.That\u2019s why all the local people with the gumption to be or have already been involved in fundraising walkathons for cancer, like the upcoming Relay for Life in Hemmingford, the Betty & Gilles Riel Walkathon in Huntingdon, and the Jewish General\u2019s Weekend to End Breast Cancer, as well as all those people living with or have lived with cancer at some point in their lives should be applauded.They are not scientists with hell bent missions of finding that ever-illusive cure for a chronic disease.They are everyday people supporting the fight against an illness that cruelly picks its targets without regard to someone\u2019s age, genetics and whether they are male or female.Cancer strikes willy-nilly of factors we cannot change as well as for reasons we can change.Considering there were 2,943 men and 2,904 women with some type of cancer in the Montérégie in 2001, according to Quebec Health and Social Services statistics, support is needed in our local communities.And Canadian Cancer Society officials are already saying cancer will be the leading cause of death in Canada by 2010, so shouldn\u2019t we be focusing more of our efforts on what we can change about cancer today, tomorrow, and well.everyday?Instead of continuing to line the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry, the best cure for cancer will be to at least try to prevent it.Local residents need to concentrate on what they can change in their lives to diminish the likelihood of getting some type of cancer or any other life-threaten- ing illnesses.Don\u2019t sit on the sidelines blindly waiting to become just another gloomy statistic.Change what you can change - even if it is as simple as starting with one\u2019s attitude.Also, in addition to all the one-day and weekend cancer walkathons to participate in this summer, people have to make an effort everyday to at least try to reduce their overall unhealthy body weights by eating more fruit and vegetables and being more physically active.Then give up smoking or, if you already don\u2019t smoke, avoid second-hand smoke.Drink less alcohol.Protect yourself from the sun and while storing and disposing of hazardous report the sudden death of William Stirrat, mayor of this municipality, on the evening of the 10th inst.Mr.Stirrat was in his usual health, except a slight cold.He assisted in doing the chores after teatime.At eight o\u2019clock he sat down in a chair to bathe his feet before going to bed, when he suddenly dropped forward.Mrs.Stirrat was by and caught him, but being unable to support him he fell on the floor.He did not regain consciousness and died about two hours after.Dr.Gillis was sent for, but did not arrive until after his decease.The Doctor pronounced apoplexy to be the cause of death.Mr.and Mrs.Stirrat, your readers will remember, by a notice of the event, celebrated their golden wedding on the 5th June 1884.Mr.Stirrat was not the first settler on the farm he owned, as it We have a special rapport!\u201d It was her joy and sometimes, her sorrow to see her students through yet another class, another year.And people noticed.Her walls were filled with accolades and plaques and in the silent halls of the school, the unspoken, very private memories of the hundreds of young people whose lives she touched in some unique way.Dermatologists have been warning recently about the increasing danger to our health caused by over-exposure to the sun\u2019s rays.They suggest that it is unwise to be exposed between the hours of 12 noon to three in the afternoon without adequate protection, such as skin-cover- ing clothing, hat and sunglasses.A retreat to a shady area would minimize the risk, but not every garden has the shady canopy of a tree to sit under, and not all of us wish to stay indoors during some of the best hours of our summer days.To be outdoors but out of direct sunlight under an arbor, trellis or pergola covered with vines would be a pleasant alternative, besides providing a focal point for the garden\u2019s design.A significant length of time is involved before the shady retreat becomes effective, therefore the selection and training of the leafy, flowery or fruity covering is .important.Vines attach to their supports by aerial roots (suckers), tendrils and twisting stems.Ramblers need to be attached by tying their stems to the support.No matter how simple or elaborate the plan for the support may be, the selection for location of the shelter and preparation of the bedding for the plants needs to be carefully considered.A good example of a fruity type vine cover would be a grape vine, a tendril type vine that is dense and leafy as well.The support for such a vine should be of a solid construction, as ultimately the vine will become quite heavy.If choosing the clematis as a flowering vine includes training it carefully to prevent tangling.It should be planted in a limey soil where the roots are shaded, and there should be an avoidance of a full southern exposure.The climbing habit of the rambler rose is compatible with a trellis facing north, installed with enough space between the vine and the trellis to allow the plant to receive air.The vine should be tied loosely to laths one inch wide by one-quarter inch thick.The Virginia Creeper clings to its port using tendrils.This leafy vine grows fairly quickly and colors nicely in the fall.Ivy uses suckers to climb and needs a broader surface to hold the aerial rootlets and one that will not be moved in the future.This vine is a bit tricky as it is difficult to winter over.Some of the more exotic vines will not grow successfully in our area, but there is a good enough selection to make it worthwhile to consider including a vine in your future.Good luck, stay out of the sun and slather on the sunscreen.NE my heart My own special memory is of the crinkle y \u2019 Sincerely, around her eyes and the little curve of a smile x .* when she talked about her work.it was her joy.Our busi is SALES : Lorraine Clark Farewell.for now, dear friend, CUT ER ; avoisinantes, dont La Presse et certains journaux régionaux ont fait état ces derniers jours.Dans un texte émis mercredi soir et dont The Gleaner/La Source a obtenu copie, les membres du comité administratif de la MRC soutiennent que près de 33 pour cent des travaux ont été effectués sur des terres privées zonées agricoles.Ces étendues cultivables sont adjacentes à la Réserve mais se
