Under the glowing heat of a cloudless morning, early risers made their way to Huntingdon this past Saturday, July 8 with the hopes of snagging a healthy bargain during the official launch of the Huntingdon County Farmers’ Market.Over the course of the next thirteen weekends, the market, which offers a variety of locally grown or produced vegetables, fruit, cheese, baked goods, wine, condiments and furniture, will be open to the public on Saturdays between 8 a.m.and 1 p.m.alongside Prince Arthur Park.As a joint effort between the Haut Saint-Laurent CLD, the Montérégie West division of the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture (MAPAQ), in partnership with the town of Huntingdon, local agricultural producers and citizens, the market offers a chance for people to buy direct from local producers. This “adds value to the agriculture in the area,” says MAPAQ representative Judy Wallwork, noting how the market “permits a privileged contact with agriculture” that allows for the dissemination of information from the farmers to the public about where their food comes from, how it is grown and the realities of agricultural lifestyles in the Chateauguay Valley. The idea for organizing a market in the Haut Saint-Laurent region “came about in two places at once,” says CLD Agri-food and Rural Development advisor Caroline O’Grady while recounting how her agri- food development committee had been toying with the idea for two years when the town of Huntingdon approached the CLD with a similar idea for a market.“It has been a great success so far,” says O’Grady, who attributes much of the success of the market, in only its second weekend, to the collaboration between provincial, regional, and municipal organizations, local sponsors including the Dewittville General Store, which provides free fair trade coffee, the Huntingdon IGA and the enthusiastic involvement of the community. That said, all the organization and preparation to get the market off the ground takes a backseat as the future success of the market now depends on the impetus of the community to keep it running.“People have to realize the importance of buying local,” says O’Grady, noting how “it takes on average about 1200 miles for food to reach your plate so the more you can buy local and support local the better.” The hope is that people come to see the market not only as a healthy alternative for buying produce, but as a focal point for community interaction and exchange as well.As such, the installations may change week after week, Æ but the opportunity to take ;; an active role in the market 4 while simultaneously participating in a regional community event remains the same.“I think it is a need in the community,” says Francis Jourdain, Vice President of the Huntingdon County Farmers’ Market and proprietor of Fromagerie Monsieur Jourdain.> “wm : cheeses, so it is a plus for us,” he says, of the numerous local producers who are all too happy with the opportunity to connect with the community.“Huntingdon is surrounded by farms, but most people do not know what is available so if the farmers come to you its easier,” says Jourdain, who is optimistic that the market will only continue to grow as the summer progresses. While the promise of fresh, locally grown produce should be enough to keep people coming back one weekend to the next, a series of special events have also been planned to coincide with the various veggies and fruits in season. In two weeks time, on July 22nd, a Blues berries fest will be held where visitors will be encouraged to wear something blue while they shop.August 5th will be a Tomato Extravaganza featuring a contest to find the largest toma- the county.Huntingdon Fair weekend will be celebrated with a corn roast on the 19th of August, while September 16th will be a weekend of Apples Galore, complete with fresh apple cider and apple bobbing for the kids. The final event planned for October 7th is a warm up to Halloween as Pumpkin Mania takes over the market with trick or treating, costumes and a pumpkin painting contest all in the works. With so many activities planned and the convenience of early operating hours, Saturdays across the Chateauguay Valley this summer could easily become the perfect day for a trip to the market.Anyone interested in more detailed information on special events or having a table at the market is encouraged to contact market manager Tanya Aberman or Kelly Greig during the week at the CLD at 450-264-5252.; The official opening of the Huntingdon County Farmers’ Market brought out crowds of early morning shoppers in search of buying locally grown produce straight off the farm such as fruits, jams, cheeses and even certified organic veggies freshly picked that morning and young Gabriel (above) was checking out some tomatoes this past Saturday, July 8.(Sarah man in his fifties has been reported missing since this past weekend in Saint- Anicet and the search to find him is ongoing.According to information from the Haut Saint-Laurent Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the man was at a bar in Saint- Anicet and later was on a boat in Lake Saint-François.The individual, a resident of Huntingdon, was last seen Saturday evening around 11:30 p.m.The police received a call from the Canadian Coast Guard little later after having found a boat in Lake Saint-François, near the Catholic Church in Saint-Anicet, SQ Sergent Stéphane Lamontagne told The Gleaner/La Source Tuesday morning.personal effects of the individual were found in the boat.A search on the water has been carried According to the police, out on the lake, including using a Canadian Coast Guard days without rain June provided 19 days with clouds and rain totally 101 mm or 4.0 inches for the month. When allowing one day following precipitation to dry the soil surface or the grass, we were left with six days for the whole month to cut our lawns without clumping, get late planted fields seeded or hopefully make some sweet hay without rain. All told, it was a real challenge. The average temperature was 18.7°C, which was 0.2°C above normal, but 2.9°C below or record setting June 2005.The excessive cloud cover in 2006 undoubtedly helped keep the temperature down.Heat units for June Chateauguay River played host to 45 Rotary Youth Exchange students representing at least twenty different countries as they kayaked along its winding shores from Athelstan to the Anne Cameron Municipal Pool in Huntingdon as the first of many stops on a 30-day cross-country bus tour. The annual XY Canada Tour has been uniting international students being hosted throughout the country for the last 28 years, and this year even a handful studying in the United States ventured across the border to join in the month long, 13,000-kilometer adventure. The students all met for the first time in Cornwall in late June, and by June 30 were already fast friends on the road that will take them to Victoria, British Columbia before retracing the route back to Ontario. The trip features stops in major cities along the way where planned activities include an afternoon rodeo on the first day of the Calgary Stampede, a spree in the West Edmonton Mall, a walking tour of Vancouver, whale watching off the coast of BC, and a stop in Ottawa to catch the Canada Day festivities in the capital.“We organized this tour to take them across the country so they get to see some of Canada” says tour coordinator Ariane Carriere, of Cornwall Ontario, who along with her husband Fred, have been organizing the tour for six years.“Our timing over the years has changed a bit, but we always have to find our way to Ottawa for Canada Day,” she says, noting how important the stop in Ottawa is to the tour. The stop at Kayak Safari in Huntingdon, which also featured a hearty barbeque lunch, on June 30, was a new highlight to the itinerary this year as a decision to limit the number of participants on the tour made it possible to include activities in smaller towns as well.“It was a good ice breaker for them,” says Kayak Safari owner lan Gill, who was happy to outfit the students for a trip down the river as the opening stop on their tour.In its fifth season, Gill has watched his business, which caters to groups, families and individual paddlers at the beginner to intermediate level, grow steadily as the area continues to be Summer of activities at MJH on Candy Champagne Rain, rain go away; come back another day.Although it is refreshing at times, the rain has got to come to an end in order for the Maison des Jeunes (MJH) team to start executing some planned activities. The MJH has started to practice softball at the park behind Arthur Pigeon in front of the arena. The first practice brought out nine dedicated members on Junc 27th.Their time and commitment to the MJH is greatly appreciated. The practice went very well and we hope for many more during the months of July and August. At this time, we would like to encourage New Members to come out and join the team. There will be a tournament in Candiac on August 12th so do not be shy, come and try out.And for you parents, please come out and support your local MJH in any way possible, as we need your help too! Now before we miss lead you in any way, softball is most definitely not the only planned activity we have.Other important dates include, driving out to Dorval for mix movies in the park on July 5th where we enjoyed free hotdogs, Dr.Pepper, Snapple and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.Today, on Wednesday, July 12th, we will be having a treasure hunt and on Friday, July 14th we will travel to Chateauguay » July 12, 2006 » The Gleaner » ——e EDITORIAL® »» A Need To Know If given the chance, an 85-year old World War II veteran from Ormstown would like to take pinking shears to the three young men who urinated on the National War Memorial with its Tomb of the Unknown Solider in Ottawa after the July 1st fireworks display.Others in our communities have told me the three culprits should do mandatory military service for several years, do jail time or, my personal favorite, be publicly humiliated by being forced to manually clean with a toothbrush the hundreds of war monuments across Canada this summer. With news last Friday that the two tcenagers have apologized to the Royal Canadian Legion (one in person, one with a letter), and the third 23-year old man from Montreal was charged with mischief for allegedly urinating in the same area, the offenders and their inexcusable acts will all too soon fade from the media spotlight and the public’s mind.So no continuous public shaming for these three urinating youths can be expected in order to prevent other people from doing the same thing.I really don’t think the three drunken young men who took a pee on the war monument intentionally wanted to insult veterans, but they did.Saying they simply had to go because they were drunk is as good as saying it’s okay to beat your spouse, the kids and kick the dog when intoxicated. Therefore, if Canada can be the only country in the world to dedicate a year to pay tribute to veterans like it did in 20035, it’s now time for the English New Frontiers School Board, the French Vallée-des-Tisserands School Board and all the local branches of the Royal Canadian Legion to be just as unique by leading the way to work side by side. The eight Royal Canadian Legions in the Chateauguay Valley (Hemmingford, Huntingdon, Ormstown, Lacolle, Valleyfield, Maple Grove, Chateauguay, Kahnawake) can use this golden opportunity (no pun intended) to decide how many of their members who served in a war will regularly visit (perhaps a minimum of 10 times) all the local schools to deliver personal stories, show photographs and do interactive presentations to ensure the future will be more connected with the past.November 11th is just another school day for most youth today and young eyes tend to glaze over when they have to learn Canadian history from a book. But being able to actually talk and encouraged to ask questions to someone who was actually in a war is a connection they hopefully won't forget; just as much as every veteran has not forgotten the sights and sounds of injured comrades, artillery gun battles, grenades and bombs exploding, low flying airplanes and hovering helicopters.Veterans may even have some good memories about their war years they can share too.Either way, we're lucky to not have a war occurring right outside our doors everyday.Yet for some veterans the war is as real as if it happened yesterday, and for today’s youth, there needs to be regular discussions in order to make those war years more than just a concrete monument and as real as perhaps the veteran they met last month.Susanne J.Brown Senior housing project threatened During 2003, the Ormstown Housing Burcau began planning a project within the framework of the AccesLogis Québec program, that would result in the construction of a 15-apartment residence for seniors of low and medium incomes in Ormstown. There is a flagrant lack of housing in Ormstown for people wishing to live in a secure environment equipped with an elevator.community kitchen, etc.The goal of this project was to offer these persons the opportunity to live affordably in Ormstown, surrounded by their family.friends and community.Every ycar, many applications are made for the apartments in Walshaven.Unfortunately, a great number of those applications are refused because the applicant’s yearly income is higher than $17,500, which exceeds the limit set by the HLM.In 2004, with the support of Mr.André Chenail, MNA for Huntingdon, the project was submitted to the Société d'habitation du Québec for analysis.During the month of May 2005, the Ministre des Affaires Municipales et des Régions, Mrs.Nathalie Normandeau, approved the project. On November 8 of that ycar.the Société d'habitation du Québec accorded financial aid in the amount of $788,500, conditional to the project being completed in accordance with the criteria of the program. In order to help realize this much anticipated and worthwhile project, Résidence Walshaven Inc.a non-profit organization, also pledged an amount of $100,000.In addition, the Municipality of Ormstown agreed to cede a portion of land behind Walshaven, land that was donated by the Barrie Memorial Hospital for the purpose of developing senior housing. In addition to this, a contribution of $250,000, an amount which initially includ- cd $60,000 for the construction of an approximately 450 foot-long, dead-end road with a were already present on the adjoining Walshaven lot, leaving a balance of $190,000.This amount was necessary to ensure that future tenants would be able to live in a safe and secure environment, supplementary cost of $158,736 would be billed to the Ormstown Housing Bureau, even though the municipality is the proprietor of 76.725 square feet of land that will be served by the same infrastructure should future seniors residences be built. This change of position by the municipality puts the entire project at risk of being cancelled. The Administrative Council of tne Ormstown Housing Bureau would appreciate to presence of the citizens of Ormstown who are in favour of this endangered project to demonstrate their support at the next Ormstown Municipal Council mecting on August 7 at 7:30 p.m.Time is of the essence, since the opening of tenders for this project is scheduled for July 13.and construction slated to begin in September of 2006.On behalf of the senior citizens of our community, the Ormstown Housing Bureau appreciates all those who have worked to bring this project closer to reality and create housing for those people that have made our municipality what it is today.Robert Guérin, director Office Municipal d'Habitation d'Ormstown 101 » GILEFANER AIX [ 80 years ago ] July 10, 1848 A.LANGEVIN ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED Tragedy stalked by the Chateauguay River in Huntingdon, on Thursday, when Mr.Antoine Langevin lost his life by accidental drowning. The deceased resided in that part of town near the N.Y.C.tracks and had been seen by his grandson, Philibert Langevin, sitting on the bank of the river during the early part of the forenoon. At that time he was drinking from a bottle. It is thought that he fell asleep on the riverbank and that he rolled into the water and was drowned. It was about 3:15 in the afternoon that his body was noticed in the water at the rcar of the Latreille Restaurant by Philibert Langevin and Arthur Galipeau who got Lucien Galipeau and Rosairc Ringuette to pull the victim out onto the bank and sent for Dr.J.R.McEwen, Coroner.By this time rigor mortis had set in and the lips were quite blue as well as some swelling of the body.It was not long before quite a crowd had gathered about the spot. When the coroner arrived he examined the body and investigated the circumstances, while a son of the victim identified him as his father and gave his age as 69 years.[ 30 years ago | July 140, 1976 ORMSTOWN LAD AND PALS LAND 14-POUND RIVER MUSKIE If the big ones are biting, they don’t worry about grabbing onto the latest in cxpensive fishing equipment, as Ormstown’s John Stewart found out last Wednesday when he (eventually) landed a 40-inch, 14-pound muskie on the Chateauguay near his Roy Street home. The 15-year old C.V.R.student was trying his luck “for anything I could get” around 5:30 p.m.when the big fish took the red-and-white spinner he was casting. Then John's problems began. In the first place, his line was only eight-pound test, and it was obvious that the muskie was much bigger than that.Secondly, how to land it?No net.So Dale Rankin, 14, one of John’s two companions, went racing off to the neighboring houses in turn, trying to borrow one while John played the fish. When he returned with the net, Dale, John and 13-year-old Gary Elliot worked together to get the fish onto dry land. With the helped of Gary's swimming towel, used to grab the tail, this was accomplished, the muskie was killed with a healthy whack on the head and the boys turned homeward with their prize. The Little White Church is celebrating 180 years Saran Rene | It's hard to miss the Little White Church sitting regally on the hill overlooking the scenic Russeltown Flatts near St- for the community today. The charming wooden church, with its brilliantly white veneer and handsome green shutters, belies its age as though it is surrounded with some kind of protective aura, or 120706.Direction J.M.Loiselle St.Joseph's clubs and activities a hit with kids “Ene Students at St.Joseph’s Elementary School in Huntingdon capped off another year of successful ventures as numerous school activities and extracurricular clubs have given a boost to both student life and learning within the school. At the suggestion of Bertha Quinnell, who runs the school’s cafeteria, a baking club was introduced where interested students were invited to remain after they had finished their lunch to learn to bake as opposed to going outside for recess. While the club was initially regarded with some skepticism, a surprising number of both boys and girls gave up their noon recess to hang out in the kitchen where they learned not only the secrets of a great desert, but about health and nutrition as well. The students were responsible for creating the delicious deserts served at the school’s recent spaghetti supper, which raised funds for new kitchen supplies. In its second year, the schools drama club for students in grades three through six doubled its members from the previous year to include 25 students.Created by teacher Tammy Cartier and parent Bruce Yando, and with the help of teacher Angela Caza, the students met once a week after class to work on an original production of “Alex in Funnyland.” Written and co-directed by Yando, the comedy about a boy who would not laugh was presented to a very receptive audience of over 100 parents and fellow students.“It has helped a lot of them come out of their shell,” says Cartier, noting how the club had also had an impact on students who had a hard time speaking English.“There are a few very francophone students and they've been practicing their English and it's been amazing,” she says, noting how parents have come forward to say how beneficial the club had been for their kids.Another school-wide project centered on commemorating the 25th anniversary of the rebuilding of the school after the original building, built in 1931, was destroyed by fire in 1978.The Parents Action Group, in collaboration with the entire student body produced two beautiful tile mosaic patio tables. The students were asked to come up with a creative drawing for the tabletops and local artist John Ryan selected the winning designs, by Kassandra Henderson of Grade 2 and Alannah Dulude-Maher in Grade 6.Volunteers from the Parents Action Group then broke and set the colorful tiles to finish the tables, which were made by students at the NOVA Career Centre.Tickets to benefit school arts and craft days, activity days and the computerized library were sold as one of the pair of tables was raffled away during the last week of classes in June. For principal Ted Sparks, the extra curricular activities available in the school are very positive for students moral and a great motivator.“If I were to say what is the secret to making it at CVR it is getting involved in something,” says Sparks, who suggests that becoming involved is one of the best ways to keep students focused or hooked on school. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the rebuilding of St Joseph's Elementary School after a fire destroyed the building in 1978, the Parent Action Group produced two mosaic tables from the beautiful designs of Alannah Dulude-Maher of Grade 6 and Kassandra l’Environnement et des Parcs n’en avait pas encore accordé l'autorisation, de sorte qu’ils vont démarrer avec quelques semaines de retard. When companies such as Monsanto developed the first GE seeds beginning in the late 1980's, the Federal Drug Administration in the U.S.did not do any testing of its own.It accepted the assurances of Monsanto that food derived from this new technology was perfectly safe.Health Canada decided to take the same position. Some scientists in both countries sounded alarms, but were overruled. On the international level, the cighth conference of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity was held in Brazil in March this year.Countries called for a moratorium on GE trees.(Tree pollen has been known to travel 1200 km.) China is far advanced in this field with some trees containing Bt toxin, which attacks the human immune system. In May 2006, 132 countries signed the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.which protects biodiversity and human health from harmful effects of GM products through regulating international trade. An agreement on labeling was reached.Canada, U.S.and Argentina which produce most of the world’s GE crops did not sign.Russia has required labeling since 1999 and has a moratorium on new GM Crops.Irina Ermakova, a leading Russian scientist, has startled sectors of the scientific community in an experiment showing that Recent Howick WI meetings Joan Gosnell In June, Isabel Templeton entertained the Howick branch of the Women's Institute with a luncheon “A Taste for Justice” to benefit Amnesty International.Members signed 13 cards to make a request for freedom for people in countries who have been imprisoned because of their work for human rights.Donations were made covering the price of the meal amounting to $215.The May meeting was held at the home of Penny Anderson.President Ann MacLeish presided with her usual expert- isc and good humour.Author Carole The CRRC recently elected a new board of directors for 2006.In the Hughes spoke to the branch on writing books and short stories.Edith Harvey reported on the Looming Energy Crisis.Cards were sent to Rhoda MacFarlane and Gladys Younie.Members enjoyed a cake to celebrate Grace Brown's birthday.Thyra Ness hosted the April meeting and introduced the guest speaker, Rosemary Hooker.Rosemary.who has long had a love of the Siberian Husky Dogs.brought a one year old named “Fly” with her.She has a kennel and raises and shows these beautiful animals. She demonstrated with a harness how to hitch a dog to a sled for races and runs.| CRRC elects new board of directors à —— ususal order: Pierre Léger, vice-president; Samantha Morin, our CDC representative; Stéphane Hanley, treasurer; Judith Jones, secretary; André Meloche, president; Serge Bourdon, Scabric representative and Pierre Gendron at the ZIP.Sanitaire Ch re TN rik Ad / TAAVFTE - Sanitary cleaning septic tanks, cesspools and grease traps. Our trucks are frequently in the area WEJEMPTYATHE di.TANK COMPLETELY (the 2 covers) SOLID AND LIQUID CAI INNOWA!
