accident > Patrice LAFLAMME (translated by Chantal Hortop) A man disappeared on Saturday night after a motorcycle accident on the Salmon River in Dundee.According to information provided by the Sûrete du Quebec (SQ).the individual and a friend were out on their snowmobiles when one lost sight of the other on the trail. The man was last seen at approximately midnight on Saturday by his companion.according to the SQ.The police force received a phone call on Sunday at approximately noon from the parents of the man, who were worried that he had not returned home. They were later informed of his disappearance.SQ divers and two SQ snowmobile units were called to the scene on Monday morning to try and find the man.Dives into the river began at approximately 3 pm.and.with the help of sonar.were carried out for approximately one hour. The search was started again yesterday at approximately 9 am.As of press-time, the man had still ry - MA Gerry McGerrigle spotted and photographed the first robin of 2011 on Tuesday, January 18 on Athelstan Road. While the first robin is often seen as a sign of spring, it seems clear after the icy temperatures we have seen in the past few days that we still have a while to wait.(photo Gerry McGerrigle) Huntingdon challenges CIT not been found.Rescuers found a snowmobile helmet near a crack in the ice near Hopkin's Point, according to the spokesperson for the SQ in Montreal.Officer Ronald Mclnnis.D Chantal HORTOP The municipalities at the two extreme ends of the bus route covered by the Conseil Intermunicipale de Transport du Haut Saint-Laurent (CITHSL) have now voiced their opposition to the way they feel the organisation is being run.The Town of Huntingdon has denounced the management of the CITHSL, as Mercier did last year, and has begun exploring other options for public transport on its territory. The mayor of Huntingdon, Stéphane Gendron, explained that part of the reason for this action was the increase in each municipality's share in the cost of running the bus service, coupled with the fact that the organisation did not provide details on its budget and management costs when they were requested by the Town.À request has also been made by Huntingdon that an investigation into the management of the CITHSL be launched by the ministry for municipal affairs, regions and occupation of the territory. The council passed a resolution at a special meeting on January 20 rejecting the CITHSL's budget for 2011.At the same meeting, Gendron said firmly that “we are being proactive” on this issue. He added that a survey regarding public transit would be sent out in the coming days to residents of Huntingdon to determine the town's needs. The town has also set up a meeting with the president of the Conseil Intermunicipale de Transport du Sud- Ouest (CITSO), Claude Haineault, to discuss a possible cooperation between that CIT and the Town of Huntingdon.CITSO serves the corridor between Valleyfield and Chateauguay.bringing users to the metro terminal at Angrignon, much as the CITH- SL does. The meeting will take place on the morning of January 25 in Beauharnois and Gendron said that a potential fusion of the two corridors, including service linking Huntingdon to Montreal, Valleyfield and the commuter train terminal.would be discussed.Francois Candau, president of the CITH- SL and mayor of Sainte-Martine, says that he is “not very impressed” by the mayor's actions. He said that “everything we have done has been public and legal.” and that the increase in management costs has happened over an extended period of time.“I don't find that [the increase] is exaggerated.when you look at all that is involved” in the costs, he added.explaining that a lot has changed in all CITs in the past few years.with more money being required by the Agence Metropolitaine de Transport and there being more meetings to attend. With regard to the documents regarding budget details requested by the mayor, Candau said “he will get them.” but that Gendron had asked for an extensive history of the budget, which takes time to put together. He also noted that those documents had always been sent to each municipality's representative on the council, and that the mayor should be able to get them from Huntingdon's representative. In a letter sent to Mayor Gendron and also furnished to The Gleaner/La Source, Alain Castagner, prefect for the MRC du Haut Saint-Laurent, wrote “| would ask you to note that the preparation [of the documents] will require numerous hours of research and copying which, to return to your discourse, constitutes a loss of time which does not benefit a fiduciary of the money of the collectivity.” Castagner also wrote that “your new infatuation with this organisation that was put in place by the MRC du Haut Saint-Laurent in 1984 together with all the municipalities to respond to a vital need.is a little bit surprising, considering.your refusal to sit personally on the [council] even though a part of the users from the MRC who use the service embark on your territory. If you consider that something must be done, | would invite you take your place on the coun- cl.” While Candau was unfazed by the mayor's allegations, he did explain that the council as a whole was definitely facing some challenges.with Mercier going ahead with its efforts to leave, as that municipality accounts for more users than any other.“I wonder how [the CITH- SL is] going to survive,” he said, but said it was “premature” to begin speculating about what form the public transportation system could take if Mercier should leave.Fortunately, at each of the public meetings and discussions of the issue, all those responsible for public transit have reiterated that there was no question of cutting out the service on their territory.JURA Gi 289, RANG 5, ST-LOUIS-DE-GONZAGUE Huntingdon, which has had one since May 2007.Saint-Chrysostome now has a Sûreté du Québec (SQ) service counter. The Haut Saint-Laurent detachment of the SQ's newest outlet is found at the Cultural and Municipal Centre on Notre-Dame Street.and is made up of a room with a telephone, table and chairs. The mayor of the municipality.Jocelyne Lefort, was present for the official inauguration on Friday morning. The director of the Haut Saint-Laurent detachment of the SQ.Lieutenant Réjean Noiseux, and two officers, Sergeant Stéphane Lamontagne and Constable Geneviève Sauvé were also on the scene."| was very anxious for it.” said Lefort.recalling that municipal authorities had been asking for an SQ service counter for several months. The site will not be a mini-police station or a branch of the SQ, as some citizens believed. As Lieutenant Noiseux explained, officers will use the location to file incident reports and to meet with citizens who have reported a crime, witnesses and suspects, so that they will not have to go all the way to the station in Ormstown.Eventually.a device for performing blood-alcohol tests will be set up there. The new service counter will not only be for residents of Saint-Chrysostome; anyone in neighbouring towns calling the regular line for the MRC's SQ can make an appointment to meet with an officer. If the call is concerning a theft or another criminal incident, they will have to go to the station in Ormstown."It should be said that the service counter could be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Sergeant Saint-Viateur fabrique and the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield diocese, the sale of Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague's Catholic church and its presbytery have been concluded. The contract for the sale of the two buildings and the 250 000 square metres of land which go with them was signed by municipal officials on December 29.The diocese’s council for economic affairs gave the go-ahead for the plan last June.Under the terms of the agreement, the buildings were sold for a symbolic dollar, and in exchange, the municipality will pay for heating, electricity and maintenance in the two buildings while the fabrique will still have access to part of the church, which can accommodate up to 200 people.“This transaction, apart from a few nuances, is like the one concluded between the municipality of Saint-Anicet, the diocese, and the fabrique for the church and presbytery,” said Gilles Lavigne, counselor for the diocese's fabriques. The municipality has already determined Danny Kyle several uses for parts of the church. The front of the church will still be used to conduct religious services. The other section may be converted into a stage or space for ‘other cultural activities, according to the municipality's mayor, Yves Daoust, who noted that the sections would be closed off from one another.“We will look at the options we have open to us.There is a horizon of three years ahead of us.” he said.Municipal authorities have told the fabrique that it may continue using the entire church until the conversion begins.“The church is a jewel of Québec’s religious heritage and it is important to us to keep it as intact as possible,” said the mayor. As is also stipulated in the sale contract, the municipality cannot sell the presbytery or the land before five years have passed. As for the church, they will remain owners for as long as the fabrique continues using the building. No decision has been made regarding the use of the presbytery, but the municipality is considering turning it into an inn with a boutique.Currently, it houses offices of the receives Erland Lee Award During the Christmas Luncheon of the Hemmingford Branch of the public transport system, as there has been talk of changes at the Conseil Intermunicipale de Transport du Haut Saint-Laurent if Ville de Mercier withdraws from the agreement. Those on the council have seen endless discussions, dead ends, unequalled numbers of concerned members of the public and occasional bursts of temper through the discussion of this issue as everyone tries to strike the balance between keeping municipal budgets under control and offering this essential service to residents of the Haut Saint- Laurent and beyond. The fact that in smaller communities, there is not actually a great number of people who take the bus has come up again and again.it has been pointed to in moments of frustration by the larger communities at the more suburban end of the CITHSL, who feel they are footing too large a bill for too few people. It has also been pointed out by those at the head of some of these communities, who suggested, half in jest, that buying a car and leaving the keys at the town hall could be simpler and more economical than paying into a collectivity for transport such as the CIT.Public transit is something of a vicious circle in small communities, since when there are not a great number of people taking the bus, it cannot come as often as would be most convenient for many users, which means that they find alternative means of transport, and so on.There is clearly no easy solution to the issue of public transit in remote areas, and no way for our society to suddenly become like that of much of Europe, with its highly developed and efficient system and its population's mindset regarding using it.We can be very encouraged, however, that despite their ongoing strife and differences, everyone publicly involved in the discussion of the issue of public transport is absolutely adamant that it be kept available to residents. Those residents who have spoken up at the public meetings have been just as firm, expressing a great willingness to do whatever it takes to keep the system in place. So, things may not be perfect, and where exactly we will end up is not yet clear, but what does seem clear is that we seem to be headed in the right direction.Chantal Hortop FR archives })] From (|b AN] 120 years ago I am glad to say that on interviewing the managers of tramway and omnibus companies, as well as railroad companies and commission THIS WEEK WE MEET SOME HUNTINGDON PEOPLE Mrs Sellar and | left Huntingdon January 17 and arrived at our destination in West Palm Beach on Friday afternoon, January 19.The excellent train accommodation on the Atlantic Coast Line made the trip delightful and we were most rested upon arrival.Florida has evidently not been enjoying the usual warm weather this season and Friday was its first really fine day and it now looks as though superb weather is here for keeps, for the rest of the season.Sunshine and temperature of 67 to 78 degrees have been the order of the day since Friday. Was over to the railway station to get my trunk on Saturday. When awaiting U.S.Customs inspection of trunk, a man looked at me on station platform and | fixed my gaze upon him.He said to me, .CAN'T DECIDE a BINso oF CRIBBAGE .AC 0} -# “Your name is Adam, you publish the newspaper in Huntingdon, but | don't remember your other name.” My answer was this, “You are Dave Zabitsky's uncle and at one time a partner with the late Harry Zabitsky.” We were both correct.Mr Frank naturally inquired about Dave and Canadian Legion activities in Huntingdon. After a few minutes talk we bid farewell, but it is highly probable we will meet one another again some place or other during the winter.Upon arrival at our hotel we found a good many of the guests of former years registered.Things look quite natural apart from the fact that many civic improvements have been made.Captain Blake, a guest of this hotel, spent most of his life in the West Indies and he told me that if he were to life his life over again he would still want to ply the Indies.Unfortunately, the Captain has had a bit of trouble develop with one of his legs; otherwise | am sure we would have been able to make the trip up together.- Adam L.Sellar 30 years ago 198 mY WIN IMMMNMHI BELLS PLAY TO FULL HOUSE There's something about the silvery tone of handbells that once heard is never forgotten, so when the Southminster Ringers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania planned a return visit to Ormstown after a six-year absnce, a capacity audience of confirmed enthusiasts and potential converts packed St.Paul's church on Sunday evening to hear the young musicians present a varied program of religious and secular pieces. The music is very much a team effort, as each ringer is responsible for producing on cue from two or four or five single noted, contributing to the total arrangement. And a team effort by the congregations of St.Paul's and Franklin United Churches also went into offering the warmest of Valley hospitality to the Ringers, their leaders, and the Kirk Singers, a high school choir which also hails from Pittsburgh's Southminster Presbyterian Church. The Ormstown visit represented the final stop in a five-day Quebec tour which also saw the group perform in Lachute and Two Mountains Under the direction of Rev.Thomas C Flynn, the handbell ringers, clad in kilts and vests, gave a Scottish slant to their program, which was entirely appropriate to the recent celebration of Robbie Burns Day in an area where so many people are of Scottish descent.Adding to the atmoshere of festivity was the fact that Ormstown's St.Paul's Church is this year marking the 150th anniversary of the setting up of its first pastoral charge.
