to the utmost.But Britain has “been fortunate in the past in that every crisis has brought forth great leaders, and : the Empire is united in the belief that we - again “amecessary to successfully meet the critical **-period which lies ahead.Great significance is attached to the fact that the influence of the extreme right wing of the governing party has been almost eliminated in the new set have the greatness up.It was this extreme right lowed its political sympathies for Hitler, Mus- Franco to outweigh its sense of Empire security to such an extent that the ring of steel which once encompassed .an impotent Germany was deliberately al- - lowed to disintegrate.Today, the buffer that was to protect us from Communism is driving toward the Channel in order to rain bombs upon us.Mr.Churchill, Mr.Eden, Mr.Duff Cooper, Sir Roger Keyes, and Mr.Sinclair saw it coming and warned us long ago, but the warnings fell on ears deafened by prejudice.{+The new Prime Minister, however, has lost “no time in getting these very men — whose patriotism, disinterestedness, and earnestness is self evident — into the new Cabinet.It has been a housecleaning long overdue, and it will be a great thing for Britain and the Empire — a tonic at a time when most needed.Of particular interest to Canadians — and, we believe, of considerable significance, is the appointment of Sir Archibald Sinclair to the Air Ministry.Sir Archibald is an in- = timate friend of our own Prime Minister, and * as Canada is to be the chief source of strength “ for the British air arm, upon which our ul- “ timate triumph will largely depend, a co- solini, and General in they appealed leadership wing that al- rail lines.The me,” each night.operation with a in such lenghty and ponderous phrases that the people to whom Thereby Mrs.Roosevelt de- for support lacked both the perception and the patience to study them and find out just what they meant.FARES ON CREDIT Canadian railways, seeking ways and means to compete with bus traffic, would do well to consider a plan which is being put into effect by 66 American lines.These roads announce that they will sell tickets on credits, allowing travelers to purchase their transportation, including Pullman accommodation and the popular all-expense tours, and pay for it in monthly instalments.The railways have need of every means they can find to encourage travel by train.The American roads are taking the step only after the most careful investigation convinced them it would be sound and profitable.There seems no reason why the same system would not work in Canada, and to the banefit of our own BITING OFF TOO MUCH Hitler's mania knows no bounds.latest dictate from Berlin is that a dress company sha!l He's Frank Merriwell Come To Life It was inevitable that Robert Feller would pitch a no-hit, no- run game.The lowa farm boy is Merriwell come to life.Striking out a major league hitter is one of the more difficult athletic feats.Yet before he was 18, Bob Feller struck out eight of the nine who faced him in his first big league assignment .In an‘ exhibition game against the St, Louis Cardinals.In his initial effort in the American League, he set down 15 Browns to fall just one short of Frank the American League maximum - hung up by the immortal Rube Waddell, July 29, 1908.In his next start, he fanned 10 of the same Browns.Then he struck out 17 Athle.- ics for a mew American League record that tied Dizzy Dean's National League mark .givinx him the astounding total of 43 strikeouts in his first three full contests.Two years later, on ‘the last day of the 1938 season, he struck out ¢18 Tigers for a new major league record.He fanned 246 batters in 1939, 240 in 1938 ., bas a higher average in that department than the great Walter Perry Johnson, LITTLE TO DO Feller did not become of age until last November, so in 1939 won 24 American League games before he was 21.: The Van Meter Wonder missed no-hit fame by one hit on three occasions.Billy Sullivan, then of the Browns, beat out a bunt on the second day of the 1938 season.Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox and Earl Averill of the Tigers CLEANS UP bu" 1.SN La SF à Le oN Bob Feller shaves now, which is more than he did when F3 started setting strikeout records.spoiled the other two performances.Feller gave the White Sox one meagly hit in 10 {nnings in Chicago last summer, but lost to ‘blond Edgar Smith, 1-0.lt was nothing new to the Indians to see the White Sox blanked inning after inning the other afternoon, There had been cnly one run scored off Feller since the Cleveland club's first aquad game at Fort Myers this spring, and that was unearned and cost the All-Star game in Tampa.The more you see, read and hear of Feller the more amasing he becomes.The story of his father raising him to be a pitcher, for example «+ « teaching him all he knew out behind the barn, The chances against such a boy clicking would be something tke a million to one, yet here he is the best in the business.TAKE LIFE OUT Feller has it all, including the perfect tomperament, the inclination to apply himself and good habits.Modesty is not the least of his many assets.His comment following his opening day masterpiece in Chicago was typical.“Thanks, everyone.for the congratulations,” smiled Rapid Robert.“But don’t forget the support I got.The important thing was not pitching a no-hitter, but winning.When you pitch a no-hit game you've got to be lucky, It 15 when you strike out & lot of litters that you've got it." And speaking of remarkable pitching feats, how about the 40-yoar-old Robert Moses Grove having an opening day no-hiiter up to the second out In.the eighth.Teller and Grove make a show of those pitchers who overlasting- ly complain about the lively ball.Young Bob and Old Mose cer- talnly show them how to deaden it.Bicycles Play Role In Football Schemes The warm days of spring football practice at Cornell are marked by tlip fgsuance of 55 bicyèles to the members of the squad.Simultaneously Car! Snavely, head coach, banned the use of automobiles for members of the squad during the training season for the second year.Head trainer, Frank Kavanagh, togther with Coach Snavely, believes that the use of bicycles last year played an important part in conditioning the athletes, who went through the season undefeated and recelved national recognition.Leg drive, stamina, and general fitness were some of the benefits received from the use of the bikes, according to the Cornell authorities.They cite the cases of Mort Landsberg and Alva Kelle as examples of a direct tle up between the use of bikes and proficiency on the football gridiron, At the end of spring practice last year, Mort Landsberg was the fourth-string fullback.Mort was determined to break Into the charmed circle.He went about his training seriously.He rode his bike all during practice and after the season ended.He then took two days pedalling his hike to his home in Mamaroneck, Long Island.During the summer he piled up additional mileage, and he rode the bike all the way back to Ithaca to report for fall pra tice, He came back in such superb condition that when Captain Eichler, regular fullback, suffered a knee injury the coaches picked Landsberg for the number one slot, along with Co- Captain Kenny Brown.Lands- Hogan Is Number One | Threat To Beat Nelson It would be a marvelous story it Ben Hogan, golf's latest professional sensation, should win the National .Open championship this Summer, just one year after Byron Nelson grabbed the big crown, For Ben and Byron have been pals for years.They grew up together down in Texas.Both were caddies and learned the game hy playing in the early morning and late afternoon, when the members weren't using the course.Nelson is six months older than Hogan and has always managed to be just a stride ahead.He left Texas first, obtained an Eastern pro job first, broke into the vfe- tory column first and won the national championship first.Hogan Close Second But Hogan has followed tlose behind.His latest feat of winning three successive tourna- ments—at Pinehurst, Greensboro and Asheville—tops the best set of consecutive performances that Nelson ever put together, And it wouldn't surprise anyone should Hogan follow Nelson's example and win the Open in June at Cleveland, The players have known for some time that Hogan, who is pro at a White Plaing club, had the game to win-——but something or other always kept him from garnering first prize.Few professionals are willing to practice as much as Hogan and Ben believes that is the reason he is finally winning.Practice did it.he says.Long Driver Although only a little chap, weighing around 140 pounds, Hogan is among golf's longest drivers.And, even more important, he is straight off the tee.His putting has always been good, but this Spring it has been phenomenal.He went 216 holes and had only two three-putt greens, During the stretch he was 34 under par.oa.berg emerged so suddenly that the first football program did not even carry his picture.He proved & sensation during the undefeated season, and now is regarded as one of the best men on the team.1 a ae .“TA Kelley of Tarentum, Penn- gylvania, was a sophomore candidate for right end last spring.He trained hard and used his bike conscientiously, Like Lahds- berg, he rode his bike home and all during the summer.When he came back in the fall he was in fine shape.He had no difficulty in capturing the wing pos!- tion, He played brilliantly all season and drew from Coach Snavey the highest praise.“Kelley Is the best end I have seen at Cornell,” sald Carl, Besides these two notable examples, there are many others in which the tise of bikes as an adjunct to training proved successful, That's’why Gan 8navely secured 15 new bikes this spring and issued them tb the new men on the squad.“I am all for bikes as a spring training feature,” says Carl Snavely.‘They play an important part In building and In addition Introduce an elo- ment of fun in training which, of necessity, is pretty rigorous.” Trainer Kavanagh has organized ‘The BIg Red Wheelers,” and every Sunday he plans long bike hikes with plenie suppers at ‘Robot’ Assistants Air Transport Amorlea, says Assoclation instruments are minimum, Major Schroeder, United Alr- lines Vice-President, told the Association recently, “The human factor is being instrumentalized out of existence.Soon the pilot will have an ‘out’ for every procedure—spare fuel, spare englues, spare airports and spare instruments.” SENIOR BALL LEAGUE WILL MEET FRIDAY Annual Session Will be Held Tomorrow Night in Victoria Hall ’ The annual meeting Westmount Municipal Softball League will be Victoria Hall tomorrow commencing at 8 o'clock, Four toams at the moment have signified their intontions of entering the league;
