In favour 1,581; Against 908; Spoiled 45; Rejected 70.Majority 673.‘While many eligeable residents were unable to vole because their working hours conflicted with the hours the polls were open it is doubtful if their ballots would have changed the final results. Many Westmount residents who turned out to vote were disappointed when they found out that, due to changes in the electoral law, they could not cast their ballot as they have done in the past, some for as long as 30 years. This situation arose from the fact that many businessmen have put their homes and property in their wive’ names. The law now states that in municipal elections noly pro- prietors or tenants whose names appear on a lease may vote.A.Bourgault, M.B.E.Rotary Guest Speaker “No greater mistake has ever been made than to suppose that disabled veterans cannot play a full part in civilian life”, stated A.Bourgeault, M.B.E., speaking to the Westmount Rotary Club at Victoria -Hall recently.Mr.Bourgeault, veteran of two wars, and member of the famous 22nd Regiment in the First World War; is District Casualty Re-Habilitation Officer of Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Re-Establishment Division, and his address to the Rotarians was an introduction to a film entitled “The Third Freedom’, This film dealt with the methods and success of the work of re-training battle casualties for industry.Continuing his address, Mr.Bourgault stated that the object of re-habilitation was to enable the physically disabled to take a full part in industry. He drew a parallel between the work done by the Rotary in assisting handicapped children, and the efforts of the Re-Establishment Division, in that both were endeavouring to assist people to play a normal role in life.Stressing co-operation on a wide scale, as necessary to the successful re-habilitation of vet- charitable activities.Purchasing for the carnival ANNIVERSARY DANCE SLATED FOR TO-NIGHT The Advent Youth Club will hold an Anniversary Dance in the Advent Hall, Wood and Western Avenues at 8.30 p.m, Friday night, Music will be supplied by the Rhythmeers Orchestra, Prizes and refreshments feature the evening.Tickets may be obtained at the door, Officers And Duties For Rotary Carnival S.B.Cayford has been appointed chairman and W.W.Murray vice-chairman of the Westmount Rotary Carnival to be held in Westmount Park from June 18 to 22.the Rotary Club of Westmount in order to raise funds for the Julius Richardson Convalescent Home at Chateauguay, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Unity Boys' Club, the Westmount Rotary, Scholarships and other of the Club's The carnival is sponsored by will be in charge of W.F.Close; showed great originality.Credit is due to R.A.Bagnell, principal, and members of the staff, for the way in which they assisted the students in self expression, and at the same time taught them the principles of handiwork. The display -was arranged in the gym very tastefully allowing the best presentation of the work. The items were grouped - by classes but work by the older grades was inserted in such a manner 8s lo give a well balanced effect. The handicraft work was especially good, and special attention was centered on an exhibit of rag rugs.Items of special interest were: the effect achieved by gaily colored cord wrapped bottles, skirts made by the older girls, hand embroidered towels, and oilcloth dolls. The most impressive work by the boy students seemed to be in the realm of painting, and the school has some promising young artists. Tourney Played Locally First Time over a Montreal layout.dian Open goes back to 1904, the Seagram Gold Cup was first introduced in 1936 as the emblem of the championship. That was the year Chicago’s Lawson Little fired a record 271 to win it.With a two-year break during the war, the trophy has been up for competition eight times — and on seven occasions the championship action was over a Toronto course.BULLETINS FROM BIRDLAND sy WINIFRED E.WILSON Oven-Bird “See that bird walking around underneath the oak tree,” Louise whispered in my ear.“It looks something like a small Thrush, and keeps wagging its tail.” For several minutes we had been resting quietly on a log left by the lumbermen on the edge of a little clearing in the woods.Last autumn’s brown leaves still covered the ground, and except for soit bird voices silence reigned. Then we saw the olive-brown bird fly up to a low branch, and with a suddenness that was quite breathtaking the word “Teacher” was flung at us five times without à pause, the accent always on the second syllable, and the volume growing so that iu the end we were fairly deatened. We looked at each other and simultaneously whispered, “Ovenbird.” Of course there was no more doubt as to its identity, although it was hard to believe that so loud a sound could come from a Warbler which, above average size, is still only slightly more than 6 inches long.Training our field glasses on it, we could plainly make out the dull-gold crown patch with a dark line on either side. The underpart was white, sharpiy and regularly marked with similar streaks running down its breast. We could understand why some people call it the Goldcrowned Thrush, and others the Teacher-bird.We recalled having read that the Oven-bird has flight song something like the rthern Yel- low-throat’s hen it pours forth a torrent of cheerful, gurgling notes, Perhaps that would happen next, But our bird was moving about on the ground again and we must not lose sight of it.Presently we saw it approach a little sapling — and then it vanished! We knew it must be there, mixed up with the dead leaves, so waited, expecting it to emerge. But nothing more happened. At length we decided to go over to the spot and investigate. When we were only a few feet distant, up sprang something brown! Our wait had been worth while, for here was the nest, made of strips of bark and grass, and arched over with leaves to keep off rain and prying eyes. This was the old-fashioned oven which had given the bird its name.Five white eggs, abundantly spotted with reddish-brown, lay within, We could leave th» oven-hird in prace now; w were satisfied, Does the Wood Thrush come to Canada? While the history of the Cana-# When top-flight Canadian and U.S.golfers tee off at Beacons- field late in June in quest of the Seagram Gold Cup and the Canadian Open Championship, it will mark the first time that the highest award of modern Canadian golf has been up for competition Saint John's Riverside layout was host in 1939.‘ .Of the Toronto clubs, St.Andrews and Mississauga have each been hosts to this affair twice, with other Gold Cup.competitions held over the Lambton, Scarboro and Thornhill layouts. It was at Thornhill that golfing-machine Byron Nelson won his first Canadian Open a year ago.LEADS FINE LIFE Unlike” the Stanley Cup — “battered old mug’ of professional hockey—the Seagram Gold Cup has to all appearances led an exemplary life. Each year it goes into the custody of the club of the year’s winner, and the winner himself gets a replica “for his permanent possession. As things have worked out, that means that the Gold Cup has spent most of its life on exhibition in U.S.clubs, for only American golfers have won it as yet.Apparently the U.S.clubs take the custody of the cup seriously, because, as the Royal Canadian Golf Association puts it, “it always turns up in good condition and in plenty of time for the next tournament’.‘ For the past year the Gold Cup has been in the possession of the Toledo Golf Club, where Ohio’s Byron Nelson took it after shooting à winning 280 over a stiffened Thornhill course a year ago.As in other years, it “turned up in plenty of time” and now is on pre-tournament exhibition in Montreal, Books for Youth THE ENCHANTED VILLAGE By Guy Lawrence This is the story of three children Elizabeth, Hugh and Tony and their adventures while they were staying with Farmer Pud- dock at the Village. It is about the Ruined Mill and what was found there, and about the Secret Treasure. Also it is about such people as Rath and his secret; a gang of mischievous Gypsies and the Fair Selina who was a prisoner, Finally the story tells you of the exciting events on the night of Blue Moon, when the Village became Enchanted and very strange things happened.MONKEY AHOY! By West Lathrop Courage and humour are found.in this story of a sensitive boy who wanted to draw, Rosie, the Capuchin monkey aud Cap’n John, who had come ‘to do some whittlin'.’” The old gabled homestead came alive and Rosie helped too.She heaved the roofing nails down the chimney, un- | ravelled the carpenter boy's sweater and hid the housekeeper's flowered bonnet.Yet it is Rosie, the little grey monkey*who had once had a lame “spar” too, who inspired Randy to meet the.challenge of his crutch —and conquer it.GALEWOOD CROSSING By Alta Halverson Seymour Just before warmhearted tomboy Tildy and her family left for the tiny new seltlement in the #&ilds of Wisconsin, Grandmother said “Lots of times Tildy, things won't seem very cheerful—they’ll seem pretty hard.Lot's of times you have to pretend you're not scared when your knees will just hardly hold you up.” The journey by waggon and (Continued on Page 6) NEW APPOINTMENT George |.McLachien, 4530 Girouerd Avenue, Apt.2.acting- manager, James Morrison ‘Brass Mfg.Co.Ltd., since the death of F.Delaney, hos now been appointed Menager of the Montreal Branch of this Company.Mr.Mclachlan juined the firm in 1940 after many years experience in the industriel and mechanical field.Born and educated in Moatresl, where be has always resided, be is a resident of N.D.G.since 1919, following his return from oversess where he served as a pilot in the Royal Alr Force.photo by Notman and Son Boys’ Brigade Plans For Camp Plans are now complete for the annual camping period of the 1st Company, at their usual site in St.Andrew’s East. The per- jod will be from the 13th to the 27th of July, and the unit expeebs a large number of campers.A special visitor, in the person of Rev.Clifford A, Selby, former Dominion president and presently rector of Christ Episcopal Churih, Flint, Michigan, will be at camp for the full period, This is not the first time he has been with the 1st Company, for several years ago he won a very warm corner .in the hearts of the boys as he camped with them, He will eon- centrate on the Senjor group, developing advanced Brigade training. The Company looks forward to having a large staff including Lieuts, A.G.Upham, Arthur Campbell, Sam Hallman, Robert Morrow, Edwin Goring and A.G.Anderson.Some will be unable to remain for the full period, while others will specialize on week-ends.Captain J.Howard Richardson will be in command of the camp.- The 1st Company has completely organized a twin company in Town of Mount Royal which will operate jointly on camp as well as inter-company competitions during the coming session. This unit will be officered by several of the 1st Company's staff and one of the Company's bands will operate from West- mount, the other from Mount Royal .This will enable a greater number of boys to take part in the band section, Unattended Ice Wagon Injures Child, Three Frederick Johnstone; RIGHT AFTER CUTTING, STEM STRIPPED OF LEAVES Cut flowers from your garden will last a long time if given simple preliminary care. Some flowers—those with gummy or milky juices in their stems, like the poppy, hollyhock, heliotrope, mignonette and hydrangea need their stems flame-sealed at the time of cutting: The stems of such flowers should be well charred in a hot flame, as illustrated in the accompanying Garden-Graph.“This treatment will keep such flowers fresh for several days instead of a matter of hours.Land plants react better to burning while water plants prefer the boiling-water treatment. This latter calls for plunging an inch and n half of the stem of each flower into boiling water for half a minute. After the stems have been sealed by flame or boiling water place the flowers in cold water, Only the stems should ‘be in the water, as illustrated, not the foliage.Decayed {foliage promotes bacterial growth, These bacteria are detrimental because they obstruct the water-absorbing cells of the stem.Flowers which wilt easily should be cut only in the morning or evening. The early moyning hours are particularly favorable, since the plant tissues hold more fluid at that time. The dahlia, a flower which wilts easily, does not usually respond to either singeing or dipping in boiling water. When wilting it can be revived, however, by placing in water as warm as the hand can bear and permitting the water to cool off.Chrysanthemums are often benefitted by splitting the stems, but es a rule do not react to other stem treatments.Westmount Highlights therefore, the latter steadily lose representation."Phe decennial census is the basis for the redistribution. If the B.N.A.Act is not amended, therefore, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick will lose seats before next election.Mr, St.Laurent’s plan will prevent this, but will give Quebec the additional seats its growing power warrants. He proposes to fix the number of seats at 250, divide that into the population of Canada to find the unit of representation, and to arrive dt each province’s membership by dividing the unit thus obtained into the province's population. The plan has the additional advantage of making the constituencies more evenly balanced. Some ridings today are far too large for one member to handle effectively.PLENTIFUL, GOOD AND CHEAP” Canadians will heartily endorse the ideas presented by G.Blair Gordon, president of the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association, presented at the seventy-fifth annual general meeting of the Association on Tuesday.Canada’s policy should be to increase production in every possible way, stated Mr.Gordon.“Turn out vast quantities of.products from the farms, factories, mines, forests, and fisheries, Make things plentiful, good and cheap; not scarce, poor, and dear.” Mr.Gordon pointed out that in Canada we are more fortunate than the peoples of practically any other country in the world today.Industrial relations in most other countries have deteriorated since victory a year ago. They have been told that the best policy in their own interests is to do less work, get more pay, and strike if necessary, regardless of the fact that such action inevitably means shrinkage of production, scarcity, high prices, which in the long run benefit nobody, least of all the workers themselves.ENTERPRISE THE KEY Isabel Paterson wrote for the New York Herald Tribune a series of articles in which she challenged some, of the glib talk about capital and capitalism.Few who use these words know what they mean, and still fewer realize that the world has moved a long way since the words were defined by Adam Smith and Karl Marx.It is commonly assumed that if land, labor.and capital are brought together, wealth will be” produced. The vital spark in modern industrial capital, Mrs.Paterson argues, is enterprise, and the transmission lines consist of human relationships. What this means is that the modern capitalistic system can’t be taken over by revolution or by mandate, because.when the human relationships cease, the producing system isn’t there at all.the music, Red coats were numer- Know Your Westmount -Iln Streets- Biography And History (Contributed by Westmount Historical Association) ous.All things indicated again that we were in a foreign city.We had a glimpse of the Governor General, as he rode from his town house to his country house,” his carriage gay and magnificent, two postillions on his horses, and a richly liveried footman. His hat was off, as he was driven along, Sufficiently of interest to merit insertion under the above heading, as an interlude, the reproduced letter from one of our readers evidences avidity with which this column Is read: — * % Le Ta the Editor— sir:— I have read with interest the articles published weekly, in the “Examiner”, on Early Cote Saint Antoine and Westmount.Perhaps some account of Governor General Lord Metcalfe, who for Le short time resided in the neighbourhood, may be acceptable. An old resident, with whose family the Metcalfes are connected, sends the following little picture of His Excelléncy as he appeared to a visitor from the United States in August 1844— ‘Friday evening we were In Montreal. Our party arrived and hurried off to the Champ de Mars.We got there just in time to hear the superb band now there, play “God Save the Queen”.Ladies à |and theïr beaux were out to hear bowing to the military presenting arms, and to others rendering a salute to rank and dignity. It would not keep out of my head, that just over the line, in Ver- moM, was another Governor, probably cutting his hay about this time, or hoeing corn”, Lord Metcalfe had come to Canada In troublous times.Five years before open rebellion had been put down in both Lower and Upper Canada and feeling against the leaders still ran high. The Act of Union of the Provinces had come into effect on February PPS 1946 : - Co-operatives in the U.S.are applying for leases to recover oil from beneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.% * % Closed to commercial shipping since 1939, the port of Churchill Will this year handle six shiploads of wheat.* # # Family allowances are being paid.for three million children. The average family receives $14.50 payment a month and the average per child is $6.13.+ * *% The present old age pittance with its ‘means test” (or should it he mean test) is surely not a redemption of the Atlantic Charter so far as ‘Freedom from want” is concerned.+ * + Mining has long been, and remains, the most hazardous of large industrial occupations. In Illinois, for example, in 1944 coal miners suffered one death for every 369 workers; avoid having it appear crowded, and by all means use your finest place settings.À bouquet of flowers, tall tapers and the wedding cake will be the perfect centerpiece, And now, for a few suggestions for the menu.A fruit cocktail makes a nice beginning.A mixture of fresh fruit is most appealing: and be sure to have the fruit well chilled. The cocktail may be on the table when the guests sit down.Special Main Dish A simple and acceptable way to serve the man course is to have the individual plates served in the kitchen. An ea la king mixture is excellent for the main dish.Try it with diced veal and ham with fresh mushrooms, in a creamy-rich sauce, It can be served in patty shells, but iry it on slices of baked noodle loaf for & grand treat. You'll want a hot vegetable on the plate with the main dish.Fresh green peas, fresh asparagus, or baby lima beans are popular.Hot rolls are passed after the plates are served.A tomato aspic salad is ‘colorful and tasty and has the asdvan- tage of being made in advance.| Use tomato juice, well seasoned and plain gelatin for the base; then add finely diced celery, a Mittle chopped green pepper and sliced olives and serve on crisp lettuce leaves.Bride's Cake As for the dessert — it goes without saying that you'll have the bride's cake. For a small group, just this cake with coffee may be the only dessert. If you wish, you may serve ice cream or sherbet along with the cake and for a larger group, small frosted cakes are sometimes offered, fn addition to the ‘special’ cake. This menu involves a minimum of work, both in preparation and in serving, but will be a compliment to any bridal table, Daughjers Of The Nile | Monthly Sewing Meeting The Daughters of the Nile,; duties during the summer months, to hear ten-year-old Sally say to a friend: “Well, you see the reason I can go with you this afternoon is because it’s my day off.” “What do you mean by your ‘day off,” Sally?” 1 asked my young friend, ‘Isn't every day a day off—during vacations?” Sally explained: ‘You see, 1 have certain things to do every day in the week. Some things change according to the day.But on Thursdays, I don't have to do a single one of them; Beth and Mother take care of them all. Then on Beth's day off, I help mother with Betb’s work. You see, our day is just like Daddy’s day off.” It was plain to see that Sally liked the idea. The fact that their plan gave them a free day like Daddy's day off made her feel a part of the working world, and very grown-up, Later on, her mother told me that the children had taken (wice as much interest in their daily tasks since she had made the rule of each child being free from her duties on one day of each week.It is an idea worth considering, even in homes where there are many family members and much to be done.We all go back to our work with more zest after having had a short time away from it.The change does ail of us good. And since we want our children actually to like to do the things we ask of them, this “day off” idea is an excellent way to accomplish this, and at «the same time to add interest and anticipation to their leisure hours. It gives the children a definite day upon which they ean plan to do what they want to do without being delayed by such things as having first to clean the hall closet, rake the leaves, or go on an errand for Mother, Then.too, it gives the different members of the family an opportunity of seeing how well they can do the other person’s job, and this is good training for later life, When it is Sally's day off, Beth will soon learn to try to do her sts- ter’» work even hetter than Sally herself does it.And vice versa. Also, it fs a good chance to develop the “Do Unto Others” attitude and actions. Many a grown person in office, plant, or schoolroom has learned to his sorrow that, although willing, he was quite unable to take over another’s work on short notice and do it with efficiency. As many mothers, do, it is a good plan to list each child’s duties on a sheet of paper and tack the list on a bulletin board kept on the inner side of a cupboard door or in any other inconspicuous place where the child will, nevertheless, be sure to see it each day.On
