Council of the Last Post Fund and the Quebec Provincial Branch, at the 42nd annual meeting held in the Largest Chair Displayed Here On Victoria Ave.A chair reputed to be the largest in Montreal is now on show at 380 Victoria Avenue, Owner L.Green- baum, of.4847 Sherbrooke Street West, thinks it to be one of the largest in the country.Built for the Speaker of the Quebec Legislative Assembly, it 19 easily roomy enough to comfortably seat the champion of the fat boys. The seat of the chair is 40 inches wide and 34 inches deep, big enough to make a six foot man look like a midget.Former owner of the chair was Hon.F, O.Faillon, speaker of the Assembly, 1882-83.The present owner, Mr.Greenbaum, has purchased it for display at his antique shop.Offered $300 for it, he « refused saying it was more valuable as a curio, Constructed of solid walnut in the Louis XIV baroque style, this chair, two inches shy of being six feet tall, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. It will be on display in the window at 380 Victoria Avenue.Motorman Blames Boys For Mishap The miotorman of an East- hound tram on Sherbrooke Street told the Westmount police he couldn't avoid striking two boys bicycling in front of his tram at’ Arlington Avenue, He said the boys, Ian McLeod, of 4835 St, Catherine Street, and George Young, of 454 Grosvenor Avenue, both 15 years old, were fooling about on their bicycles in front of his tram.He told the police that their bi- eycles locked handlebars swerving into the line of the streetcar. He signalled to them, applied his brakes, but said it was impossible to avoid hitting them. Both bicycles were smashed, but the boys luckily were thrown clear of the wheels, Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Thursday.Mr.Holland in his report stated that the Last Post Fund was established here 42 years ago to ensure that no veteran of the Empire’s armed forces should ever be buried in a.pauper's grave. The organization has buried 17,177 ex-service persons on the North American Continent, Mr.Holland said.He added that $1,798,187.95 had been expended by the Fund in its work.+ Unity Boys’ Club Carnival To Open With Big Parade ‘The Unity Boys’ Penny Carnival will in the Field of Honor at Pointe Claire there were now 1,755 ex-service men, of whom 1,049 were Protestants and 706 Roman Catholics, Last year there were 102 burials there, an increase of 32 over the previous year.He said that the work of the Last Post Fund continued to grow, partly due to the fact that they were now dealing with veterans who fought in the two world wars.Mr.Holland noted that in the cemeteries of the Fund across Canada there were soldiers who had earned the very highest decorations, including the Victoria Cross, ranking from the humble private to top-ranking generals, and also including soldiers who fought in the Fenian Raid of 1860 and from then on in every war in which the British Empire ever took part.Any person who fought for the Empire anywhere in the world was that Westmount citizens may eventually have a new route in getting to downtown Montreal. The oft discussed expressway which, according to plan, would rug across the city near the harbour line, may utilize the railway lines to achieve its purpose.According to our informant the Executive Committee of the City of Montreal feels that there are a number of railway lines both in the eastern and western parts of Montreal which could be abandoned for raliway purposes and turned over to the city as right of way for expressways, one of which is the line running into the old Bonaventure station. If the plan goes through a bus service down the Glen could connect with the expressway thus eliminating the delay experienced by the existing tram and bus lines leading to the downtown area.No definite action will be taken by Montreal until a conference is held with Ottawa transportation officials’ in connection with using the railway rights of way.In the meantime the Executive Committee has turned down a request of the City Planning Department for $75,000 to finance the preparation of definite plans for the expressway. An opinion has been expressed that the project be built above the present Canadian National tracks instead of on the proposed site.Westmount High H&S To Organize Next Wednesday A meeting to reorganize the Home and School Association of Westmount Senior and the Westmounters were in fine fettle and ready to give a good account of themselves against any type of oppositign that boys from the 79th Battery or Kinsmen Club, would dish up.Nimble footed Jerry Ramsey, started the Aca- demites off on the right foot, when he showed too much speed for Tommy Meloche, a promising youngster from 79th Battery. This battle was at 103 lbs.; Jacques Martin, made it two straight for the home boxing team, slugging out an impressive victory over Allan Baxter, who fought a game but loosing battle. This match was at 108 lbs.Jack’s fine "performance gained for him the judges decision as St.Leo's best junior boxer in the show and with it the title to the Catholic Mothers Club trophy, awarded annually to the school’s best junior boxer.Peter Grant added to the victory march, with a well earned triumph over Real Desgroseillers from 79th Battery, in a bout at 133 lbs.Pete was at his best to beat his opponent who, by the way, was Juvenile Golden Glove Champion in 1949."In a local bout at 147 ibs., Mario Chartrand scored a decision over John Quinllan in a rather dull affair.Tommy St.James, packing a wallop in both hands, was too much for rugged Jack Neil from Verdun Kinsmen, in the 126 lbs.class.It was rather an event battle up to the half-way mark, then St.James took over and swarmed all over his opponent, showing enough class to be judged the best senior bout in the show and winner of the Hector Caron Trophy, given annually to St.Leo's senior boy selected as turning in the top performance of the show.Bob Dixon,” a husky kid from 79th Battery, put a temporary stop to St.Leo's victory march, with a well-earned decision over the willing hut inexperienced Kevin Smart -at 157 1bs.Dave Orr put the Academy crew back on the winning track by virtue of a split decision over Bruce Meikle from Verdun Kinsmen, in another 126 lbs.bout.Dave showed fine forni hut was forced to the limit to nudge out the Verdun boy.Claude Sawyer came up with victory number seven for the Saints, scoring over Jack Ewert from 79th Battery at 147 lbs.Claude's display was a let-down from the fine form he showed in training and he had difficulty trying to land a solid blow against his slow moving rival.Sawyer's last minute decision to alter his natural style, came near causing him his downfall. The feature bout at 126 lbs.bringing together John Foy, the Academy's fistic pride, and durable Gene Theroux of 79th Battery, was an exciting encounter that saw both boys go all out in a thrilling match.Foy showing his experience and a high degree of courage, needed both to bring a close, but well- earned victory over his worthy opponent. Two brief no decision bouts featuring students from.the school, was well received.Paul Genereux met up with Michael Carrier and both half pints threw .a lot of leather to receive a fine ovation. In a Junior bout, Bob Impey and George Robillard gave a fast exhibition.; ’ A novelty wrestling bout supplied the humour.Dave Donohue, Karl Hurley, Pete Robertson, Tommy St.James and Mike Dod- man rounded out the cast for this act.Dave Donohue in particular, brought the house down with characterization of Dawson City Dave.Coach Andy McGillis was highly pleased and proud of all his hoys and.felt the success of his 1951 boxing class, was due in no small measure to the superb condition of all his boxers.Coach Henry Mec- Keown of 79th Battery, was quoted as saying, "It Was the finest conditioned group of boxers he ever saw the sehool turn out,” and this comment was seconded by many of the staunch First Vice-Presi- dent, Mrs.A.J.Murray: Second Vice-President, Miss Cecile Paul; did volunteer work at the Iverley Centre.: Mrs.F.Seymour Bell, chairman of the Service Committee, reported that in addition to its major projects the club had supported the Western Pacific Teachers Scholarship Fund in Honolulu, the Winnipeg Relief Fund, the Cabano Relief Fund, the School for Crippled Children, the Amelia Earhart Scholarship Fund and had provided equipment for the dental clinic at Victoria School.Christmas parcels were seni overseas, and Christmas cheer sent to girls in protective schools. The members also contributed gifts for the Christmas tree at Summerhill House.’ The club also co-operated with the Iverley Community Centre in preparing a survey of recreational centres in the district served by Iverley and under the leadership ; of Mrs.Bell had sent in a report to the Montreal Parks and Playgrounds Association. In her presidential address, Miss Guiton said that a highlight of the season was the joint meeting sponsored with the other women's service clubs.Directors elected for two years were Miss Aileen Buttanshaw, Miss Beth Crosby, Miss Dora Cuthhert, Miss Gertrude Doyle, Mrs.Josephine Martin and Mrs.Emma Watt.Directors serving for one more year are Miss Helen Guiton, Miss May Jackson, Mrs.R.B.Shaw, Miss Hilda Knight, Miss Margaret O'Neill and Miss Mar- jorie Smith. From newspaper sources it would seem that the main stumbling block is that of funds.Who is going to pay the bills? The majority of municipalities appear to think that the Federal Government should foot the bill.Just what the attitude of Westmount is on this subject is a matter for conjecture. It is refreshing to know that right here in our midst there is one organization going right ahead in trainifig its members in civil defence and doing so without receiving one cent from any outside source. The Civil Defence Group organized by the Rev.O.J.Ritz, of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, has been quietly organizing and training the group to be able to turn out on a moment’s notice to help the community in case of thusiasm aroused by the initial appeal cools THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MAY 25, 1651 no pressing need for the hurried formation of a civil defence organization — the threat of war or enemy action on the home front may have diminished. If however, the situation is as grave as: some of our government leaders and military men appear to think the delay ih getting the civil defence organization geared for action requires some explanation.0 : ¥ ® 0% 0% civic organization could at this example before the en- —" Westmount Baptist 1 * * “If God Be With Us!” will be the sermon in the Westmount Baptist Church on Sunday. In the evening Dr.J.A.Johnston will preach on “iWthered Hands.” Recording Secretary, Miss Agnes Coffey; Vice-President, Mrs, J.O.Clark, and Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs, T.D.Handrahan.Mrs.Grant and Mrs.Clark were appointed as delegates from the Unit to the Provincial Annual Meeting to take place in June.Well, that's our C.A.C.news for this week.Do you want to attend that Provincial Annual Meeting on June 8th?While only accredited delegates may vote, the -meeting will be open to all C.A.C.members.If you are not already a member or have not renewed your membership, don’t forget—membership is still only fifty cents a year and the Provincial Treasurer ig still Mrs.E.K.Larsen, 4593 Hingston Avenue.M.F.G.consumer problems. The members | WESTMOUNT, GARAGE Reg d Operated By «.BUILDING REPAIRS ALTERATIONS and general repairs expertly dome, - planned kitchen and cabinet making a specialty, free estimates on request.FI.3095.Evenlugs ‘WA.5932.’ S-12 CARPENTRY CARPENTER, experienced in proper= ty maintenance, alterations and re=- pairs.Estimates free.Satisfaction guaranteed.Call after 5:30 p.m.WI.7464.S-17 S.STANDRING GENERAL carpentry and cabinet-making.Expert craftsmanship on all lines of woodwork, Planned kitchens and custom built {interiors a specialty.Estimates free, Satisfaction guaranteed.IL.T7452 H .8-6 CARTAGE GENERAL TRANSPORT-Local and long distance.Specialty: furniture, pianos, refrigerators.Cn'l FI.1528.DRESSMAKING, DRESSMAKING and alterations.Don’t discard outdated clothes.I have ideas, Madame D'Arcy, 2055 Mansfield, Apt.6, BE.4688.S-4.FURNITURE REPAIRS FURNITURE repairs; Warnock started the run at an easy pace and starting the track, was, to all appearances, a poor third and as they rounded the turn into the home stretch, he was overtaken by another competitor! Coming into the.home stretch, however, “The Skipper” took on a lightning burst (or so it looked to us) of speed to overtake the leader and win by a close but, nevertheless, ‘a record-breaking performance.Master Warnock is also entered and has qualified for Monday's running of the above- mentioned 100 and 200 yd.dash finals.Lots of luck, Skippy. In the Class 4 (19 and under) WE HAVE THEM BOTH! Another WH.S.competitor, Charlie Davies has qualified easi~ ly for the final running Monday of the 120 yards tow hurdles, class 4.A note of interest in last Saturdays‘ invitation track meet down in Plattsburg.New York is that Charlie was considered to be outstanding, in the eyes of other contestants, in the difficult 120 yd.high hurdles in which he managed to become the only Canadian entrant to place, coming in a very good third! Charlie Baillie came second in the 12 1b.shot put a few inches behind the best throw by the first place: American contestant.Rollie Bradley copped third place in the 880 yd.dash.Of the three Montreal compete, HS.M., WHS, and W.H.H.S.; Montreal High was.the only school to show in the final overall standings, ending in third position.Other Westmounters to enter the Montreal Schools’ meet last Tuesday were Mitch Klein, Gerry Levy, Gordie Clark, Jim Liddell and Don Raven.Westmount XI Scores Over R.M.S.Ascania The Westmount Cricket Club had little trouble disposing of the R.M.S.Ascania Tuesday night in an exhibition match at West- mount Park. The Montreal squad HILLMAN CONVERTIBLE $2,185 PLUS HEATER mounter Rollie Bradley, who, in- schools to, ge Stars 12-11 In Wednesday’s Softball this week in the Westmount Municipal Softball League; The Avenue Stars defeated Yards 6-1 on Monday as the Lunny-coached Aladdins took the slow starting R.Y.P.S.into camp by a total (we think!) of 26-6.In the-Wednesday games, Ave- ‘nue Stars defeated Aladdins; R.Y.P.S.downed the Yards.On.Monday, Ave.Stars’ team captain Doug “Bud” Selby was the big gun for the victors when he batted .668, scoring twice on one for.a single in the second inning.Gordie Graham was the other two.run scorer for”the Red and Blue on a batting average for the evening of .000!
