Peace Problem Discussed By Current Events Club The search for peace, a problem which has troubled the wor!d since the dawn of history, was presented before sixty-five members of Westmount Senior High School's Current Events Club at the Club's last meeting. The speakers were David Franklin, Doug Turner and Michael Sundell, who approached the subject from three different angles.Dave Franklin proposed that all nations recognize disarmament as their ultimate goal.An international police force, in which each country is represented proportionately, should be established to dater any aggression.A confederation of all nations shoud be sat up and a basic revision of ths ; charter ousht to be eff:cted. In closinr h's address, Dave claimed that we, the people of the world, must also support St.Matthias’ Finances In Excellent Condition A large attendance at the Annual Vestry Meeting received the news that for the first time in 10 years the church was entirely free of debt, and that all property, including parish halls, chapel, rectory, war memorial, and many other additions, had been completely paid for.The Rector, Canon Gilbert Ou.ver, presided, and warmly congratulated the congregation un this achievement; and whilst thanking all the officers( especially the retiring People’s Warden, Mr, Arthur Eke) and the various organizations, reminded them that this was the 75th Anniversary of the parish. It was decided to fittingly observe this occasion in the Fall, It was reported that church attendance had increased and that over 40 new families had been bddded during the year. The new organ is to he installed in a.few months. The Rev.C.Douglas Ellis was cordially welcomed on the staff. All finances were in - excellent condition, and the sum of $8,500 was voted for term, “peace”, and achievement of “personal peace”, as opposed to “economic” and “political peace”, was the most important. To secure political peace, he voiced the ideas of many of the world's greatest statesmen, i.e., rearmament and the maintenance of the “balance of power”.He then went on to say that economic peace has been partly achieved through the ef- torts of the United Nations Re- habiltiation and Relief Association, and that personal peace can perhaps he produced by following the Golden Rule.Mike Sundell next defined the term, “war”, and stressed the fact that it is basically caused by the possession of one state of something which another one wants. He then reviewed briefly the present situations in the Near East and Asia, and emphasized the fact that the rebellion of the exploited peoples there against the Western powers is a manifestation of a form of Communism. He also maintained that many people have a very apathetic attitude towards present grave world problems and should adjust their thinking in this connection.Mike stressed the fact that the Western powers must provide Asia's people with practical education and help them to learn to | support themselves.“If we don't | follow this course,” he said, “we are likely in time to be overwhelmed by the exploited peoples of the earth.” Following a heated question period during which numerous interesting ‘theories were advanced on the question of peace, Jane Bartlett, the Club's vice-president adjourned the proceedings with the announcemefit that next week's meeting would feature a Round-Table Discussion.= PRICE FIVE CENTS ;| Que.was travelling West on Sherbrooke street when it suddenly careened and UN.6-0857 basic aim of teaching geography and history in our schools. Both subjects are closely related and are often combined as ‘social studies.” It has been well said that ‘Geography provides the stage and history supplies the prayers.” Certainly neither should be taught without reference to the other. At the same time, the present writer feels that their wholesale combination as ‘social studies” may destroy much of their value and integrity as individual disciplines.Fortunately, our Quebec schools have retained them as separate subjects, with correlations wherever approprite. In teaching citizenship, it is often asserted that the formatian of desirable attitudes rathen than the teaching of facts should be the main purpose of history and geography. The present writer has already upheld this view, but it niust be realized that sound opinions, leading to desirable attitudes, can only be built on an adequate foundation of factual knowledge.Today, everyone seems to believe that he has a right to an opinion ‘about everything, regardless of his ignorance of the facts.Sound basic knowledge must be a prim- ery aim in teaching geography and history if other aims are to be realized. How do modern school courses in these subjects achieve the various purposes we have here sel for them?(TO BE CONCLUDED) Card Party Province of Quebec Non-Pen-
