Protestant school teachers, announced yesterday, will, we think, meet with general approval. The Board had a difficult assignment in solving a long-time problem, but out of the multitude of complaints and conflicting suggestions and demands, have worked out a solution with which few can find any serious fault. The new scale is, wisely, based on years of preparation and length of service; brings parity between men and women teachers reasonably close; and is high enough to attract good men and women to the profession who otherwise might be lost to it.The position of the teacher in the community, and the heavy responsibilities inherent in the training of our youth, make it essential that the profession attract the best.Teachers’ salaries should be, but haven't been, higher than many positions in the business world requiring considerably less in the way of qualification and responsibility. The new scale will help to correct that.We hope the Board won't go any further with the so-called merit plan.Like Canon Kenneth Naylor, we are decidedly “uneasy” about such a system.Who arbitrates merit, and on what basis?Who can decide whether a teacher who does brilliantly with a brilliant | class is better than one who does only moderately with a poor class?oo : However, that is far in the future. The Board members are to be congratulated upon a satisfactory golution to a very difficult problem.Eager Markets “Go South, Young Man" Today's Best Advice for Trade A generation or two ago Horace Greeley advised the eager and forward looking to “Go west, young man.” There was the land of still-untapped opportunity. But, in time, opportunities are satisfied. They have been satisfied largely in the west, ‘and there is evidence that Europe have been forced to a policy of- self-containment.So the Horace Greeley of this day might well urge that we turn our eyes south to the last great frontier of opportunity. The United States, always.quick to sense an opportunity, in its investment policy thinks of Canada and next of South America.’ Already Canada’s trade with that southern continent tops half a billion dollars annually. It is greater than our trade with all the Commonwealth countries, outside of Britain.Fortunately our trading opportunity with the south is mutual. We need the oil of Venezuela, the oil and fruit of Colombia, the tin of Bolivia, the coffee and fine woods of Brazil. In that last country there are expanding demands of a population three times our own, just beginning to discover its needs and to learn that Canada has much to spare.’ During the past five years a Canadian owned company, operating in Brazil and popularly known as Brazilian Traction, has shown how quickly trade can reach high figures. This company alone bought a million and a half dollars of Nova Scotia coal, four millions of base metals from all parts of Canada. And it bought thirty million dollars worth of electrical equipment. That is the sort of business to assure the markets for Canada’s expanding industry.J.L.R.Whole Education By Rev.Canon R.Kenneth Naylor Trinity Memorial Church PRESBYTERIAN MELVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Melville Here Monday Something new has been added to the staff of life: Starting Monday, housewives across Canada will be pleased to note the words “enriched bread” on most wrappers when they buy their loaves.¥ Enrichment means the addition to white flour of three of the B- vitamin group, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin, as well as the mineral, iron. There will be no change in color, taste, or number of calories (good news for dieters!), and its nutritional value is equal to or greater than that of whole-wheat bread. In 1944 Newfoundland adopted the compulsory enrichment of flour as a public health measure to offset widespread vitamin deficiencies, anaemig, and the resulting apathy and lack of initiative. When the team of internationally- known scientists who made the original survey were summoned again in 1948, the results they found were startling and effective beyond a doubt.Consequently one of Newfoundland's terms of agreement in joining Canada was that it be allowed to keep its bread. The United States, England, and Sweden have been producing enriched bread for’ more than 10 years, and within the past two years, even Jamaica and the Philippine Islands have adopted mandatory enrichment. In Canada definition for enriched flour and bread were included in the last revision of the Food and Drugs Act dated June 1, 1952.The section dealing with enrichment of flour became effective January 1, 1953, that dealing with enrichment of bread on February 2, 1953, putting the sale of enriched flour and bread on a volun- sary basis.Further good news for the shoppers on Monday morning is that the cost of enrichment is so slight that it has been ahsorbed by the baker and the consumer will pay no more.: .C.McD.Luncheon Meeting Stanley Presbyterian Women’s Association will hold a luncheon meeting Tuesday at 1:15 p.m, Mrs.Jones’ Group A is convening.C.M.H.Auxiliary Woman's Auxiliary of the Children's Memorial Hospital will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, February 4, at 10:30 a.m.in the RR EER RT RT Windsor Hotel, “HULL A “ANSE TAY TUT PETTY pital will be amnounced at the annual meeting of the Women's Auxiliary which is to.be held on Wednesday, February 4, at 2:30 p.m, in Victoria Hall, Sales Executive To Address W.A.At Park-Emmanuel A, C.WILKINSON The Women’s Association of Westmount Park-Emmanuel Uni» ted Church is holding an open meeting on Tuesday, February 3, at 8:30 p.m.in Webster Hall, ‘The speaker is to be Mr.A.C.Wilkinson, Sales Promotion Mane- ager of Electrolux (Canada) Limited.Mr.Wilkinson was born in England and came to Canada in 1929.He served in the Royl Navy and Royal Air Force in the First -World War.He is a former Hone orary President of the Sales Executive Club and Canadian Reglon- al Director of National Sales Executives and has given talks on advertising and related subjects to service clubs, boards of trade, etc.His subject for the evening is “The Fitly Spoken Word”.Zonta Club The Zonta Club of Montreal will hold a business meeting for members only on Tuesday, February 3 at 8.00 p.m.in Victoria School, St, Luke Street.Mrs.E.M.Watt, president, will preside at the meeting.Calvary W.A.Calvary United Church Wome en's Association will meet Wede nesday, €eb_4, in the church parlors. There will be a box lunch at 1 p.m, Rheumatic PAIN Good news for those who long for relief from rheumatic pain, but feel hopeless!
