Although the disease has been in existence in Canada for about 16 years, it is only in the last eight years that it has become known as a real problem.John Cooper, Westmount Parks Department, says, ‘’Like any epidemic, it can attack one tree and leave another alone, just as disease will affect humans differently.” The disease was introduced to the United Stales from Europe in 1930 when it appeared on elm burl logs to be used in the manufacture of vencer. In 1944 it was first noticed in Canada near Sorel and Three Rivers.and has been on the’ spread here ever since.“In the past eight to 10 years it has become a problem,” Mr.Cuoper said. The disease is a fungus disease carried from (ree to tree by the native elm bark beetle. This ugly beetle is a natural borer, laying its eggs under the bark. When the new beetles emerge and go to another tree they take the disease on their bodies with them, spreading it to the water channels under the bark of the healthy trees.Westmount is carrying on an extensive spraving project of their own trees, and offer to help private owners determine if their trees have the dread disease.“We can’t spray privately-owned trees,’ Mr.Cooper said, ‘but we will take cuttings and have them tested.” Parks Department representatives take a cutting of a tree suspected of having the disease and send it to Laval University.A report is sent back on whether or not the tree is infected.‘McGill fund tops $131,000 McGill University's Alma Mater Fund, the annual gift to the University by its graduates.now totals over $131,000, it was announced recently by Fund Chairman, A.Deane Nesbitt.Contributions to the Fund, which provides an annual income for the unrestricted use of the University, are coming in daily from all parts of the world, Mr.Nesbitt said.In one mail this week, the Graduates’ Society, which sponsors the Fund.received contributions from Graduates in Uruguay, Greece.France, the Netherlands, Cuba, South Africa and Sierra Leone, among other countries. Thus far, Mr.Nesbitt pointed out, there was a total of 6.185 contributions received, and he said it was particularly encouraging to report that close to 1,000 graduates had increased their donations and that there were over 1,000 new contributors listed.“Most McGill graduates recognize the importance of the Fund to the University's revenues’, he said, “and we are urging those who for one reason or another are not regular subscribers, to join their fellow graduates in helping McGill to regain its outstanding position.By LARRY MCcINNIS And there is the part that hurts ! If the tree is infected, it must come down.“There is absolutely no cure,” Mr.Cooper said.‘‘The tree must be removed to prevent the spread of the disease from it to its healthy neighbors.” An early sign of the disease is wilted leaves. If your tree has wilted leaves, have a cutting sent away by the Parks Department.Of course, if the disease is confirmed, there is no hope. The tree must come down.Foresters, meanwhile, urge all private owners of elm trees to have a competent tree doctor arrange (o spray the trees.Otherwise the risk of losing the elms seems to be better than average.Oh, yes, if the tree must come down, the owner must make his own arrangements to have it removed by a private tree firm.THE CARRIER: with elm The native elm bark beetle, top, has been trees “‘always’ foresters say, but only since the introduction of the fungus disease in Canada in 1944 has it taken the blame of causing (ree infection. One of the early signs of Dutch elm disease, bottom, is the curling of leaves on the tree. There is no cure for the disease — the only hope is to spray the tree and discourage the beetle from boring into the wood and planting the bad fungi beneath the bark.SRNR I SAY!
