SYNAGOGUE used rightly it is a blessing; when it is abused it becomes a curse.St.Paul was aiming lo use money; in fact, he felt that it was essential to his plans in two ways.He wanted the Christians of the Gentile world to raise a fund to relieve the poor in Jerusalem. That was simple Christian charity.Paul, however, had another purpose in asking for a collection. He felt it would be the outward expression of the love of the brethren for one another, and would serve to overcome the desperate cleavage between the Jewish and Gntile parties in the Church. He made no apology for his asking for money, but he did take steps to see that it was handled in such a way that he would not benefit from it personally. At that moment Paul was not considering the local needs of the Church, but those came a very short time * later and he had no hesitation in pressing them. The fact is that money is an essential part of our everyday life, and no less of the religious side of our life. The Hebrew was required to give his tithe for the vpkeep of the Temple and the priesthood and he was also required to rare lor the poor. The same is true in every branch of the Christian Church; each one is a brotherhood or society, and though the great Society is divine.it makes use of material as well as spiritual | things, and generally speaking, money is the form in which the material things are provided. How generously? As God has blessed each one of us.Our Lord's special commendation was for the woman who gave (wo mites — which together make a farthing, Uhe gave generously because she gave what she could not spare.Too often we give grudgingly of what is left over.At the present lime very many congregations are in the midst of an Every Member Visitation. The purpose is to knit together each congregation in fellowship; to urge the members to participate in worship; to let each member see that the congregation is weakened if he absents himself; and lastly to impress on each member that there is a real satisfaction in sharing in the support of his part of the great Church which today is doing our Lord's work in the world.SYNAGOGUE TEMPLE EMANU-EL 4:00 p.m.4:10 p.m.SABBATH blood, flambe (a purple glaze) and peach bloom glazes are all basically the same glaze, but with different firing schedules, and using varying periods of exida- tion. Her work of procelain wine sets, covered bowls and vases, shows the use of these three color glazes exclusively.Mrs.Reid explained the difference between earthenware pot- try and porcelain as a difference in material. While she use natural clay for her earthenware, porcelain is an -artificial mixture.“My clay would be a solidified molasses, ” she said, “if it were fired at the high heat necessary for to see if it is true. The fact of the matter is that Verdun Sham-Cats have won themselves an Eastern Canada senior ‘B’ title and now move into the Dominion final against St.Vital in Winnipeg on the weekend. For nine years we have watched, right from the start the birth of the Verdun Sham-Cats.We saw them lose and win.We saw them choke up as the saying goes when the chips were down and although they were close they never got past the winning of the QRFU title. Two weeks ago they made it and here, on Saturday, they moved and passed the Hamilton Ti-Cats Bees and are now in the Dominion final.¥ I have to go back to 1938 when intermediate football, that's what it was called in those days, and Verdun had their own four team league. At that time along with Buck Tahamont, who was ‘eague president, this writer was the secretary and treasurer. We saw Argos win the QRFU title and later Verdun Grads, who did it twice. That was 1940.Along came the war and football was forgotten in smal’ cities across Canada. It was not until 1946 that playoffs were arranged just for the Eastern title, Later came the west and now we have a Dominion playoff.* * * It was pleasing to be in on the kill as Verdun Cats fought a good team of Cats ‘rom this city, the ‘B’ team for the Big Four Ti-Cats.The line work was good, but much is te be desired by Verdun for their Western game on the weekend.Western lines are good because they are carbon copies of the western pro clubs. Two Hamilton men, McCoy and Koshul almost made monkeys of the Verdun Cat defense line, but, the Verdun crew came up with the big stops.* * * The game had its breaks.Hank “Lapointe, Johnny - on - the - spot, picked up two touchdovns by grabbing loose balls. These were important. The Hamilton team ¥* * got a break on a blocked kick from the Verdun 10.Hamilton were a heavier club, about 15 to 20 pounds would be a fair estimate.Verdun's success this year, stems from having pro players, veteran seniors and the eight junior players up from NDG Those Maple Leafs can take an assist on Verdun's run to-date.T Home .It was a fast trip to Hamilton in order to catch the Eastern Canada junior final between Rosemount and AKO Windsor. We knew of the Windsor club for they played Lake- shore some eight years ago and later they played Verdun junior Sham-Cats thrice and won every time out. This time, Rosemount, a much heavier club won 26-0.Windsor fielded the lightest club we have seen in the past 10 years.Al Newman is still their coach who also handles a school team and knows just where he is going to get his next replacements.* * LA It will be a Dominion junior final Saturday at the Verdun Stadium. That's two in three years as NDG Maple Leafs faced the same Hilltops at the Old Westmount Grounds in 1957.The Western club will be good, for that fact, when two teams get this far, into the D-—‘nion, both clubs must be good.- Throughout the world more people buy Seagram's V0.than any other brand of whisky exported from any country SERRE IER TE PRRs * La: PY < x > x IN ES 2 > = + em The Westmount Examiner, Friday, November 18, 1960 19 Ilwndon Express Service.Final rugger playoff action slated Saturday Last Saturday's semi-final in which Irish beat Westmount and Mount Royal defeated Wanderers settled the finalists to compete for the Mair shield.Irish, in their surprise upset of the strong Westmount team showed that their traditional fire and verve can pay-off.Wcst- mount went into the game as favorites because of their splendid record in the season's league games (they finished second in the league competition). The final game will be played Saturday at the Town of Mount Royal arena, 2 p.m.Trophies will be presented at a dance at the Town of Mount Royal Town Hall in the evening.Westmount started off strongly and got the ball frequently from set scrums and the talented back division promised results, The first score was a penalty by Allistair Wittit for Westmount after five minutes of play.Irish held off further scoring by ex-x cellent covering and hard tackling. The men in green started to dominate the lineouts and were really fired up in the loose play.Their efforts paid off when Gerry Brennan scored iwo penalty goals. With 15 minutes of play gone, Irish were ahead 6-3.The battle raged back and forth without further scoring until, with only seven minutes left in the game, Joe Field got a touchdown for the Irish which Brennan converted and so the Irish won 11-3.League champions Mount Royal were at home to the Wanderers in the other semi-final match and this proved to be a hard fought and very exciting game.Mounties got a quick lead with two penalty goals by Niall Quaids but the Wanderers did not give up.The heavy town scrum got the ball frequently in tight play and Wanderers were getting it often from the lineouts. Both sets of backs had scoring opportunities and there was some splendid running and passing, but good hard tackling by both teams brought these movements | FOOT BALL | BIG FOUR Sunday: Ottawa at Toronto, second of total points final, Ottawa leads by 12 points.INTERCOLLEGIATE Saturday: University of Alberta sudden-death senior foot- out Mt.Royal 26-12, at Lower Canada College grounds. The next step for Loyola will be against Cardinal Newman, winners of the third division, Friday, in another sudden-death game. The hero of Loyola was George Poirjer, in action for the first time since he suffered torn leg” ligaments, collected two touchdowns, one a 45 yard pass-and-run play and the other an 80 yard run back on an intercepted pass.Quarterback Bernie Young, locat- fng Poirier and Paul Leblanc for one payoff pitch apiece.was another dominant figure in Loyola's victory — the club's seventh in a row.Young also booted a pair of converts, On the winners’ first play from scrimmage, Young combined with to nought, often times the ball carrier was brought down inches short of a touchdown, The battle raged on but in spite of many exciting moments and near misses no more scoring was possible, and the Town won 6-0.Poirier on a 40-yard aerial, setung the stage for Barry MacDonald's two-yard burst to open the floodgates.Poirier's first TD and Young's {wo extra points gave loyola a 14-0 cushion after one quarter of play.A 65-yard Young-to-lLeblanc combination and Poirier’'s second major pulled Loyola into a commanding 26-0 lead before Mount Royal could reach the scoreboard midway through the third stanza.Sparked by the never-say-die line charges of fullback Dave Mac- Donald, coach Bill Wade's Mounties battled back with unconverted touchdowns in cach of the last two quarters.Tommy Bramhill went the route on a Kickoff return from his own 40, and Bobby Palov followed with a 12-vard scoring slant.Dave Lennon and Pete Loranger » were defensive standouts for coach Ed Meagher's Loyolans, while halfbacks Paul St.George and Jimmy Newman chalked up huge chunks of yardage on offense.Two-way slalwart Don Taylor shone for Mount Royal, which tasted defeat for the first time this season.OI BRINGS 11] THE BEST MULTI- BLENDING This 18 Lo certify that Dow Ale is brewed by the
