company, announced a $1.4-billion capt- tal investment in the Mont Tremblant Resort, immediately increasing the demand for nearby land.Tribec recently opened an office in New York to deal with to National Library in Ottawa (Continued from page 1) thing remotely literary will be passed on to the National Library and then sold at the Canadian Book Exchange, where they will be picked up by another library which would be glad to have them.” At a meeting Monday, WMA members said there is still a high level of concern about the Westmount library two years after a multimlhion-dollar expansion project was completed. The group will be writing to City Hall to request another meeting with the library committee to discuss book weeding and discarding, exhibition policy and lack of communication with the public. The shipped books include runs of literary journals such as University of Toronto Quarterly.Queen's Quarterly, Dalhousie Review, Tamarack Review and a French-Canadian magazine scries as well as old debates of the House of Commons, Johnston said.Library director Caroline Thibodeau said the material was not retained because the periodicals were not being used and the government documents are available on the Internet and on CD- Rom.Some books might appeal to limited but appreciative audiences, argued Sherbrooke Street resident Grace Prince who looked through the discarded volumes with Johnston.“1 came across a book of maps called Our Nations Capital. It's a very rare map which I'm sure any urban planner would love to take à look at and any library would kill to have.” the former librarian commented.Thibodeau said the weeding of the books in the basement, estimated at more than 10,000 volumes this spring.had been recently fimished. The ongoing weeding of the regular collection continues, QSPELL awards gala (Continued from page 1) the award which is sponsored by the Federation of English-lan- guage Writers of Quebec (FEWQ).It is dedicated to encouraging and acknowledging authors who are published for the first time.Well-known Westmounter Maurice Podbrey, former head of the Centaur Theatre, was also nominated for the first book award for his Half Man, Half Beast: Making a Life in the Centaur Theatre, Almost every seat was taken in the 5e Salle in Place des Arts where CBC% Eleanor Wachtel hosted the ceremony.Other winners included the late Ralph Gustafson.who completed his book of poems called Vision Fugitive just before his death in 1995.He won the AM.Klein Prize for Poetry.Charles Forans Butterfly Lovers won the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction.Author Trevor Ferguson accepted the award on behalf of Foran who now lives in Hong Kong.Winning the Community Award this year was host of CBC radios ArtTalks, Shelley Pomerance. The award 1s in recognition of an outstanding contribution to English language literary life by an individual or group.Celebrating its tenth anniversary.QSPELL is a not for profit com- munity-based organization with a mandate to encourage and support English language writing in Quebec. It shares an office in Westmount's Atwater Library with FEWQ.There arc talks of merging the two organization, which have similar goals and share administrative resources, Most of the speeches following the awards were lighthearted.Several mused about being a Montrealer living in Toronto.Jokes about bagels which “are contaminated by chocolate chips”.and Ontario air “which just docs- n't taste the same” had the audience chuckling and nodding their heads.as presenters and recipients of the prizes acknowledged the uniqueness of Montreal.“Anglo Quebecers have a lot to be proud of.” said ex-Montrealer Elizabeth Abbott who presented the prize for best non-fiction.ATTENTION and when the decision was made to get rid of old volumes. The local historical society won the right to look over castoff books before they were sent away.Although several volumes pertaining to Westmount were kept for their own archives from the first four boxes, it's been some time since the WHA has seen any books, Johnston noted.Thursday, December 11, 1997 - 25 Buying a classified ad in recent signing at Chapters bookstore, Carole Epstein read a description of Westmount from her new book, Perilous Relations.“Westmount is just a vertical residential arca with the house prices climbing as the hill rises. And it is only a hill.” she chuckled as she recalled looking up to sec the Mayor of Westmount, Peter Trent, standing there listening. The crime scene in her latest mystery in the Perilous series takes place in Westmount and the descriptions of the people and places will ring a familiar tone with its residents.Epstein began her writing career after retiring as President of Canada Belt and Bag.“1 suddenly found that 1 had a lot of time on my hands and so | decided to try to write a book,” she said.“The first one was just for fun.It was like a sweater that | knit without the last sleeve but it didn’t matter. But the sccond one was work because | was aware of all the mistakes that | had made in the first.” The Perilous series of mysteries and her main character, Barbara Simons, are her own creations, She is now almost finished her third book in the series and plans to write at least a fourth.“I want to write a book in cach of the four scasons in Montreal.” she said. Her latest book was set in the spring.Epstein said that she will continue to write “until I run out of ‘perilouses’ or my publisher tells me “enough.” Both set in Westmount Both of her books, Perilous Friends being the first in the series, arc set in Westmount because she's familiar with it and she added that “the people in my second book wouldn't live anywhere clse.” In both of her books, Epstein said that she concentrated on a particular cultural communi- Second author Epstein.ty.“It 1s fun to take a group of people, play with them, and manipulate them.” Epstein is no stranger to Westmount. She used to live here, her brother and all her friends still reside here, and Greene Avenue continues to be one of her favorite haunts.“Westmount translates well onto paper,” she replied when asked why she chose the city as the setting for her book.“You have to write about the things that you are familiar with because you still have to invent so much in your book,” she added.“But you can’t make mistakes when describing the area.” She admits that the house described in her book does not really exist on Belmont Avenue.“[ went walking around Westmount until | found the type of house | was looking for and | used it as my model.| moved the house to Belmont though because book for I wanted the park nearby in my descriptions,” she said.In retrospect, she added that, “there should have been dogs in her book since the park is full of golden retrievers.a fashionable Westmount dog.” A problem she said she encountered while writing this book was deciding on how her main character, Barbara, would run into a dead body since normal Westmounters do not frequently have this experience. Her books arc not based on her real-life experiences. She said that she has never encountered a dead body herself.“1 did have six pcople come up to me after my first book who thought that they were the basis for characters.| made them up.“Maybe in the begining I used kernels of some people that | knew but the characters really developed lives of their own,” she said.Epstein did admit, however.that “you can really hear my voice throughout the book. But it does- n't mean that it is me.For example.Barbara exercises often but | wouldn't go to the gym to save my life.1 just thought she should be healthy.“You get to create characters cxactly how you want them to be.She's also younger than me.” She also added that “it is also fun because you get to kill people in a book.” Perilous Relations was written in two and a half months because Epstein said that she was ill for an extended period last year. However, she said she thinks it was a better book than the first because “it was more focused.| was in complete control.” In this book, she leaves two possible suspects as the culprit.Only at the end of writing the book did she decide who did it.“What you need to know is why people kill, you need a good motive. The three motives are always sex, money, and revenge.” Both books are available in bookstores in hardcover or can be borrowed from the Westmount Library where she did a significant part of her writing.‘ PROGRAMME D RES EN IMMORIISATIONS / CAPITAL 31 Westmount squad beat out again in SWAT finale By BoB OLIVER Bridesmaids might not exactly be the word the Westmount Oldtimers SWAT team want as a label, but the entire team is proud of their second consecutive sec- ond-place finish at their own hockey tournament this past weekend at the Westmount arena. After falling on the short end of a 3-2 overtime shootout to Dorval in the championship final last year, the SWAT team were once again only one goal short of winning it all this ycar.At the 9th annual event that ran from Thursday to Sunday, Beaconsficld got to put their city’s name on the championship trophy by edging the SWAT team 2-1 in the final.“It's okay.we made it to the finals again,” SWAT forward Claude Bismuth said shortly after the championship game.“Next year will be our 10th anniversary hosting this tournament. That's the one we're going to win.” Despite not dnnking from the winning cup, the SWAT team’s strong showing gave them something to be proud of.And sitting in their dressing room with their finalists trophies in hand made the cold ones taste that much better.“] guess you could say we peaked a little carly. We played our best game Friday night” SWAT sniper Bruce Kemerer said.“But give Beaconsfield credit.they deserve it.They're a strong team and they re tough to knock off the puck.In any event, it was a good.close.clean game.No onc got hurt.” Kicking off the event on Thursday night.Westmount got things started by beating Kirkland 4-1.Doug Price.Kemerer, Bismuth and Richard Shadley were the SWAT marksmen, with assists going to Billy Marsden (2), Hillel Greenbaum (2).and Jim This drawing was done in celebration of three goals scored by Nicholas Marks, 12, a peewee house league hockey player who bagged a hat trick a couple of weeks ago.The Irvine Avenue resident plays for the Capitals. The drawing was done by local illustrator and Irvine Avenue neighbour Bruce Roberts.West.The following night the SWAT team got two goals from Kemerer and one from Price in a 3-1 win over TM.R.Don Lang, West (2), and Shadley assisted.Apart from the final game, Westmount suffered their only other setback on Saturday, losing 3-1 to the Montreal Old Puckers.Twenty-one seconds into the game, Kemerer hooked up with Price for the lone SWAT goal.“We didn’t play a good posttion- al game, we were getting caught in our own zone and we didn't shoot the puck enough.” said Jon Feldman.whose knee operation in September turned him from player to coach.“Fatigue also set in,” he said, and added with tongue-in- check, “but hey, we're oldtimers. It’s just natural to get tired when you get to our age.” In their 1-0 semifinal win against T.M.R.on Sunday morn- TRADE-INS ACCEPTED ing, Lang put the red light on for Westmount converting a three- way play with West and Howard “Bobby” Hoppenheim. In Sunday's final down 2-0, Westmount made it a one-goal game when Lang redirected a Kemerer point-shot by the Beaconsfield goaltender midway through the final period.“It doesn’t get any better than this in a final game,” said Bcaconsfield captain John Van Lecuwen, standing at center ice with the championship trophy.“Westmount played well, and they made it close.” In the dressing room after the final game the entire SWAT team applauded the cfforts of goalic Michel Bourgcois, who kept them in every game.SWAT team members were Bruce Kemerer, Don Lang, Doug Price.Michel Bourgeois, Howard Teams participating were Beaconsficld, T.M.R., Kirkland, Pierrefonds, Aloucttes, Montreal Old Puckers, Dorval and the Westmount hack.er.SWAT team.Hoppenheim, Marcel Guay, Bill Marsden, Claude Bismuth, Richard Shadley, Nick Matossian, Jim West, Claude Mercier, Hillel Greenbaum, Peter Naylor, and coach Jon Feldman.MARTIN SWISS CYCLE -
