McDonald's receives permit from Westmount Martin C.Barry espite much opposition from local residents over the past two months, McDonald's is a step closer to serving burgers and fries on Sherbrooke Street in Westmount.Pierre Brunet, who holds the franchise for the fast food chain, has been issued a permit by the borough to renovate the vacant space near the corner of Claremont.The work being done inside the former Murray's restaurant at 5011 Sherbrooke will have to conform to code, said Westmount borough council chairman Karin Marks.\u201cWe have asked McDonald\u2019s to commit to certain things in writing, which they have done,\u201d Marks said this week.Westmount has asked McDonald\u2019s to install a filter in its air evacuation system to diminish cooking odours.As a result, the new restaurant will have not only an \u201centirely new ventilation system, including hoods, ducts, exhaust fan, etc.\u201d but also a chimney that will discharge air as high as possible.McDonald's staff especially happy birthday this past May.The former Westmount city councillor and prominent member of the business community turned 63 as his appointment to the Order of Canada was being announced.\u201cIt came out in the press on a Friday and it was my birthday,\u201d he said this week.A chartered accountant and former executive of Ernst & Young\u2019s Canadian and Quebec divisions before retiring two years ago, the Kensington Avenue resident was one of 65 Canadians from all over the country who were officially inducted by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson at a ceremony in Ottawa on July 4.Limoges, who has sat on the boards of many non-profit organizations over the years, including the Arthritis Society, les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Winnipeg Community Theatre and the Ecole de Technologie Supérieure of the University of Montreal, was honoured for his contributions to the com- Gérard A.Limoges munity as well as for his dedication to business and commerce.Limoges was elected to Westmount city council in 1999 and chaired the City\u2019s finance commission until the end of last year, when Westmount\u2019s forced merger with the City of Montreal did away with his and the other councillors\u2019 positions.A citation on Limoges\u2019s contributions read during the Order of Canada induction ceremony stated: \u201cHis commitment to the community is as impressive as his professional achievements.But even more important, this involved citizen is an exemplary volunteer in several spheres of society.Deeply humane and altruistic, he has made himself and his skills available for the advancement of a number of social and cultural causes.\u201d Limoges was involved with the Winnipeg theatre group (he was a founding member) in the early 1970s when he was living and working in that city.Over the years, he\u2019s settled in several other cities in Canada where he exercised his profession.\u201cEver since that time I\u2019ve always been involved with one charity or another,\u201d he said.\u201cI tend to change them because I think that after four, five or six years you have given to the charity your knowledge and you should switch to another one and let somebody else contribute to this charity.\u201d Limoges said he was \u201cvery honoured, obviously\u201d to have been inducted into the Order of Canada.\u201cIt\u2019s like being knighted if you were in England.So obviously I am very pleased with that.\u201d Westmount borough council chairman Karin Marks, who worked alongside Limoges during the last two years of Westmount city council, said sh was happy about the appointment.\u201cIt\u2019 a wonderful recognition for him,\u201d said Marks.\u201cGérard is a man who has been involved in the many different communities that exist in Montreal.He\u2019s been involved in the francophone community and the anglophone, he\u2019s been in political and non-profit organizations, and I think that\u2019s truly the mark of a community caused only water damage, but for 1 many Montreal firefighters a July 21 alarm at the 400 Kensington Ave.apartment building provided their first taste of Westmount's community spirit.At six a.m.it was already warming up to be a beautiful sunny summer day.A passing jogger called the fire department from a cell phone and reported a fire at what looked to be the Shaar Hashomayim synagogue at 450 Kensington.A fireman looked out the window of the Stanton Street station, saw smoke, and sounded the alarm.Since the Shaar is a heritage building, the department dispatched 40 firefighters on three pumper trucks, two ladder trucks and a fire bus.Sherbrooke Street was blocked off between Redfern and Metcalfe avenues.But when they arrived, firefighters discovered the smoke was in fact coming from the roof of the 27-unit apartment building next door.Acting quickly, some t about extinguishing the fire while others went door-to-door waking up tents and evacuating the building.Patricia Lazanis of nearby Church Hill Avenue was getting dressed for her jog downtown when she looked out the window and saw the fire.Minutes later she jogged past and saw the residents in assorted stages of undress, many barefoot in pajamas, some holding young children, cats and dogs, standing on the lawn at the Westmount Lawn Bowling Club.Some of the seniors had gone to sit on the fire bus and wait.Lazanis immediately jogged home, where she and her husband Dennis and six-year-old daughter Alexa put together a canteen of coffee, fruit juice, bottled water and bananas, loaded it into their SUV and drove it down to the residents.\u201cT only did what I would have wanted someone to do for me, \u201c said Lazanis.\u201cActually, we had so much fun I thought I might call the fire department and tell them every time there is a crisis to call us and we would bring our canteen down.\u201d Although the tenants had waited patiently without grumbling, they were happy for the coffee and the kindness showed by the family.Joanna Krantz, manager of the building, was moved by the show of community support.\u201cThe tenants were wonderfully cooperative,\u201d she said.\u201cWe appreciated so much the support of the community demonstrated by that family, the fire fighters, and the borough representatives.\u201d One witness heard several firefighters expressing their surprise at Westmounters\u2019 concern for their neighbours\u2014and their appreciation for the refreshments offered to them.Guinness accepts Westmount'\u2019s dreidle-spinning record emple Emanu-El Beth Sholom I and Congregation Shaar Hashomayim have received confirmation that their claim of spinning more dreidles than anyone else has been accepted by the Guinness Book of World Records.In a combined effort at the Temple last Dec.9, more than 400 adults and children\u2014mostly members of the two Westmount synagogues ranging in age from three to 88\u2014succeeded in keeping 358 dreidles spinning all at once for a short period.The previous record of 289 dreidles had been set by the Mayer Kaplan Jewish Community Centre in Skokie, Illinois on Dec.15, 1998.\u201c(Guinness) had informed us of that cord on Nov.8, 2001,\u201d said Arlene her, Shaar Hashomayim\u2019s events coordinator who worked closely with Rhona Sampsonovitch, her counterpart at the Temple, in organizing the challenge.\u201cSo it gave us probably about a month to prepare and we got the people out and that was it.\u201d Scher said the Guinness organization seems to have taken its time responding, although certificates received this week have dispelled all doubt.\u201cIt took them quite a while to answer us,\u201d she said.\u201cI don\u2019t know if GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS CERTIFICATE The record for the most dreidles spinning simultaneously is a to participants sitting on the floor to begin for the occasion perched on a seven-foot step ladder at one end of the Temple's large basement room to capture a wide panorama.Among the materials burnt down through the deck into the concrete roof, where it was stopped.\u201cWhat saved the building, and the tenants\u2019 belongings, is the fact that the building, like so many in Westmount, was constructed completely from concrete,\u201d said Borough Director Bruce St.Louis, who had driven in from Beaconsfield to asses the situation.At the end of the day, the only damage reported was water of I snow in the winter and well-paved year-around has retired after 32 years of service.Frank Marrone started work with Westmount\u2019s Public Works Department almost the same day Fred Caluori, the city\u2019s long-serving Public Works Director, was beginning his career with the City.Marrone and Caluori both vividly recall running into each other as they were filling in application forms.\u201cI started one day before Frank,\u201d said Caluori.\u201cI remember that we were both in the personnel office applying for a job.Frank applied for the technician\u2019s job and I applied for the engineer\u2019s job.\u201d Marrone said that he and Caluori had met \u201cnot knowing each other, and the next thing you know we were sitting one desk apart a few days later.Fred started on the sixth of July, 1970 and I started on the seventh of July, 1970, and we've been together ever since.We've had a great working relationship.We could almost read each other\u2019s minds at one point.It gets scary.\u201d Caluori said Marrone had \u201can extremely significant job.He would start very early in the morning and would finish very late at night.\u201d A particular occasion when the two spent a lot of time together was during the ice storm of January 1998 when they were \u201cassuring every phase of the operation that had to be done would get done.\u201d Marrone\u2019s most vivid experience with the Public Works team came not long after he began working for Westmount\u2014in the winter of 1971\u2014when record snowfalls, especially on March 4, hit the Montreal region.\u201cIt was one of the worst seasons on record,\u201d said Marrone, noting that Public Works crews hadn\u2019t been equipped with a two-way radio system yet.\u201cWe were trying to locate these guys and give them follow-up instructions.It was a good learning process, I found.\u201d Caluori said Marrone\u2019s position, involving every aspect of roads maintenance including watering and cleaning, was probably
