for WMA members Wayne Larsen “Gone to Haiti — home soon.” Journalist Sue Montgomery's hastily scrawled note to her family indicates just how little time she had to prepare for the assignment that quickly turned into a horrifying adventure filled with despair — and hope. The Gazette journalist was in Westmount on Monday evening as guest speaker at the Westmount Municipal carthquake.“It was an experience that changed my life,” Montgomery told the approximately 80 WMA members assembled in Victoria Hall.Accompanied by Gazette photographer Phil Carpenter, Montgomery flew down to Haiti soon after the earthquake struck. But things began to go wrong from the moment they landed in the Dominican Republic. Not only were their credit cards not recognized, but the helicopter pilot who flew them into Haiti insisted they leave all their luggage behind — forcing Carpenter to bring only his available.* Less expensive than comparable hotels.cameras and Westmount Family Day on May 29.While this may sound impossible at an event where many people are cating, the City has implemented an organic waste pick-up program in which food scraps will be disposed of in organic bins to be composted so they won't end up in a landfill.Community organizations and vendors are encouraged to use paper, not styrofoam plates, and special compostable cutlery that can be put in the same organic bins.Cold drinks can be served in paper cups and hot drinks in special paper-based or bagasse cups.“We are asking our suppliers at Westmount Family Day to use these kinds of products so that we can tell all participants to compost and recycle,” said Wolfe.“With their participation, we can recycle and compost all garbage generated by Westmount Family Day as a result diverting it from landfill.” In addition, vendors are encouraged to offer more vegetarian choices.“Vegetarian food requires much less fossil fuel and produces less waste then meat-based diets,” Wolfe said.“Many people are choosing to go vegetarian for other reasons including health concerns.” He adds that offering choices such as veggie-sausages and sov milk radio, Penny found a new one in the world of mystery writing. But it was not as easy as it looked and she generously shares her story of actually writing and then the business of writing and publishing books on various sites on the Internet.Penny's perseverance has paid off.Since the release of her first book Still Life, it and the ensuing series of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novels, her books have been enjoyed by readers in Russian, Turkish, Spanish and more, but never in French. But all that is going to change in August with the release of her latest and fifth book The Brutal Telling, finally in French. The Sutton resident's books have been on the New York Times bestseller lists and perhaps more impressively have earned her many awards including the distinguished position of being the only author to be awarded the Agatha Award for the best mystery novel of the year, the literary award for the best mystery and crime writers who write via the same method as Agatha Christie, three entrenched in history. This week the board of directors of the Atwater Library of the Mechanics’ Institute of Montreal invited the community to its 170th Annual General Meeting. The Atwater Library, 1200 Atwater Ave, traces its origins back to 1828, when the first Mechanics’ Institute established in continental British North America was formed in Montreal.Today, with its official name, the Atwater Library of the Mechanics’ Institute of Montreal, it 1s the sole survivor of the many mechanics’ institutes established in Canada in the 19th century. The rest were either closed or merged into public library systems.Today the Atwater Library and Computer Centre of the Mechanics’ Institute of Montreal shares its certified historic site with a variety of not for profit literary and other organizations. For more information go to www.atwaterlibrary.ca Humanitarian Walsh featured at Library lunch series As part of its lunchtime series, James Martin will present a talk on humanitarian Tony Walsh (1898-1994), a founder of Montreal's Benedict Labre House, on Friday, May 28 at 12:30 p.m.Walsh led an unconventional English childhood before being exposed to horrific experiences at just 17 in the trenches in World War 1.Those prompted a move to Canada, where he found himself working as a teacher in a First Nations community in British Columbia. At age 56, Walsh decided to leave the West to live a radical life of poverty in Montreal where he founded Benedict Labre House, a soup kitchen, home for homeless men, and centre for Christian dialogue and social justice tha continues on today.A close friend of Jean Vanier, Walsh was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1990 before dying four years later. His biography, Travelling Light: The Way and Life of Tony Walsh by John Buell, is available at the library. As always, there is no charge for admission.Participants arc encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch and light refreshments will be served. For more Whoever had the genius idea of placing a steel animal trap in the backyard of their Upper Westmount home was obviously not thinking. If you have a persistent raccoon problem there are more humane ways to solve it than to place a trap made out of steel (steel, people! Something that can snap shut and break bones), which managed to lead to the possible amputation of a helpless animal; an animal that could have very well been someone’s cat, someone's dog, or even worse, someone's unsuspecting child.Around 5:30 p.m.on a Monday night, someone called the Animal Health Clinic in NDG to report what appeared to be a distressed racoon, caught between a rock and a fence in the yard of a Roslyn Avenue residence in Upper Westmount. When animal clinic employee, Annly Ho (acting purely out of the kindness of her heart; they are not trained in and/or authorized for wildlife rescue) went to the scene, she found Westmount’s Public Security Unit trying to help the animal, Upon closer inspection, they found the raccoon was unable to move because it had been trapped in à steel jaw trap.À real trap that hunters use to trap live animals in the woods! “The poor thing was so exhausted trying to free himself from the trap that when | arrived, he was curled up in a ball and could barely move,” Annly told us.She proceeded to call one of the clinic's vets, Dr.Gilmour, who rushed over and sedated the animal, freed its paw and then transported it to the clinic.Because it appears that the wound was not fresh (translation: that poor animal had been suffering for days), the vet will, most likely, have to amputate its paw sometime this week.Aside from the obvious: steel traps are illegal and the person who decided to install one in the backyard of a densely residential community should be prosecuted, or at the very least, have to pay a very hefty fine, where is our sense of compassion?Deliberately setting up something that can inflict such pain and such physical damage goes against the very image of Westmount residents as avid animal lovers.Or does that love stop with your own dog?We get it; some of you aren't animal lovers. We understand that raccoons can be bothersome little pests, going through your garbage and making a mess but nothing should justify such an act.About a year ago, someone placed a steel trap on Nuns’ Island, in an attempt to deter beavers from damaging their property. The result?A small senior dog got caught in the trap and died. Will it be a child next? The police should investigate immediately and the appropriate charges should be filed. If someone can afford to own a home in Westmount, then it goes without saying = that they can afford to solve their raccoon «+ Problem in a more humane way. There's no mm excuse for such heinous behaviour! ursday, May 20, 2010 www.westmountexaminer.com AO cS ie ae a month after an oil rig under lease to BP exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, we're looking at the makings of an ecological disaster that might make the Exxon Valdez oil spill look like it could have been picked up with a quick swipe of a Bounty towel. With an estimated 800,000 gallons of crude oil pumping into the Gulf each day, this spill will drastically — and perhaps irreversibly - affect the 9,000 miles of shoreline and fragile ecosystems of Louisiana, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. And while politicians like Senator Joe Lieberman have the audacity to downplay the disaster, by issuing inane statements like “accidents happen” environmentalists claim it’s only a matter of time before the crude begins to slip into the hundreds of marshlands and the sensitive wetland ecosystem at the mouth of the Mississippi River delta. The numerous dead sea turtles that have washed ashore are just an early ominous sign of the marine crisis that’s to morally responsible for oil spill It’s ironic that, while BP chose to disregard safety precautions to save a buck, they are now in the uncomfortable position of shelling out between $6 million and $7 million a day to try and contain the spill. There's also no doubt that a gargantuan legal battle is in the company’s immediate future, as commercial fishermen, charter boat captains and property owners begin to file lawsuits.BP will pay a hefty bill for this disaster and rightfully so.But, while mounting costs may dissuade other oil services contractors and companies involved in offshore drilling from making stupid decistons that could potentially cost them dearly in the future, who's going to pay the real price for the disaster?Mother Nature, that’s who.Is this accident going to deter offshore drilling? No.Humans are no more capable of learning from their mistakes than knowing their limits when it comes to exploiting this planet.Just because you can do something doesn't always mean that you should.Sometimes the price is simply too high. We're a world dependent on oil. It’s hypocritical to denounce BP and others like it, it we're willing to get in our car in the morning and drive off to work. But there are ways to conduct business that doesn’t endanger everything we hold dear, and there are safety precautions that cost money, but must be implemented and legislated as mandatory, to protect our world from the grubby hands of businessmen who would see fit to cut corners just to make a quick profit. With the U.S.having a measly two per cent of the world’s oil reserves, why is offshore drilling even being allowed in that country? Why are lives and livelihoods put at risk for such a pitiful return? So large oil companies can make millions? The fact of the matter is Americans simply cannot produce enough oil domestically to make large investments in offshore drilling worthwhile. But that hasn't stopped them. For some stupid reason, as humans, our relationship with our natural surroundings has always been based on the foolish assumption that, no matter how much damage we manage to inflict on the environment, nature always has a way of bouncing back. There will come a time when it won't.“We probably could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy to try very hard and too damn cheap,” writer Kurt Vonnegut once G.P.0 Vj OPINION Don’t question importance of Public Security Unit To the Editor: As the Director General of the City of Westmount it is my responsibility to respond to the article published on the front page of the May 13, 2010 Westmount Examiner questioning the role played by the Public Security Unit. The reader comes away with the notion, whether intended or not, that the Public Security Unit does very little for the citizens of Westmount.Let me state the important role played by these dedicated men and women since the inception of the Public Security Unit 30 years ago.The article published comes as a result of an unfortunate incident that happened in Westmount Park on Saturday, May 1 and was first brought to our attention at the public Council meeting on May 3.We share, as the Mayor and Council shared that evening, our extreme upset that a vulnerable person would be attacked in a place such as Westmount Park at 8:30 a.m.on a Saturday morning. As my follow-up investigation showed, this incident had not been reported at the time of the incident to the Police nor to the Public Security Unit.We continue to remind everyone that incidents such as this should be reported to the Police, no matter what the gravity. This allows a prompt intervention and a follow-up so that officers can be deployed where needed.Public Security Officers routinely patrols streets, parks and municipal buildings to act as a visible deterrent and intervene in the event of accidents, emergencies or suspicious activity. In the summer we increase our park présence with regular and auxiliary foot and bike patrols.Furthermore, the article raises a number of issues that I wish to address. The first is about Public Security being in the vicinity of the Home Depot at the time of this incident.I have checked, and I can report that a vehicle was there to facilitate an emergency dispatcher who had to be brought in to PSOs can only help within the confines of the by-laws To the Editor: The page | headline “Attack on senior prompts tough questions” (Examiner, May 13) should be a wakeup call to every Westmount resident and taxpayer. If we are living, as Councillor Gary Ikeman says, in a city that “has freedom of action and there are all kinds of people out there,” then police it that way.À park as large and centrally located as Westmount Park (close to downtown) should have day and night patrol; indeed, while Public Security Officers cannot be everywhere at once, a visible, regular presence in the park would send a clear message to potential troublemakers. But there is a deeper issue: the notion that Public Security can ride to the rescue to just about any problem.Fact is, PSOs can only help within the confines of the by-laws Westmount lawmakers have given them to work with.- Let me be the first to fess up that I cling to the belief that Public Security is a magic bullet. But in the last year or two, it's become apparent that certain repetitive complaints cannot be pursued, or have limited potential for resolution, because Westmount's bylaws are inadequate, woefully outdated or simply silent on the matter in question. For example, why did it take costly damage in Westmount Park for the City to implement a parks’ curfew, when such curfews have long existed elsewhere?Westmount is currently engaged in major overhauls of certain bylaws (noise, garbage/recycling).But those who govern us must face a hard reality: it’s not all about pretty gardens, bike paths and a state of the art Arena.People who choose to make Westmount their home— to live, shop and play here— expect certain standards with regards to safety, cleanliness and noise, among others. And while those standards may rely on goodwill and compliance, they start with bylaws.Dorothy Lipovenko Westmount replace the regular who was unable to work that morning.According to our logs, this was at 7:50 a.m.As planned, our patrols were in Westmount Park between 8:10 am.and 8:25 a.m.There were a large number of Concordia and Marianopolis students who were holding rallies at that particular time. The second issue involves the idling of vehicles.Westmount's Public Security Unit is equipped with hybrid trucks. These trucks run on both clectricity and traditional fuel however, they idle in order to charge the batteries and keep the radios operational. It is important for us to lead by example, and that 1s the reason we opted for hybrid trucks a few years ago even though the Westmount by-law does not apply to emergency vehicles. Finally, for obvious reasons, we ask our Public Security Officers, should they be due for a break, to remain in place rather than coming back to the office the visibility of these officers and vehicles is important at all times, no matter where they are. What is more particularly important to me, as Director General, is to know that all citizens can count on a professional, first- class organization that is looking after their interests 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Much of the work of the Public Security goes unnoticed but © feel confident that the majority of citizens are grateful for what they accomplish, Safety in Westmount is a team effort, Westmounters and visitors alike can take great comfort with the dedication and expertise of all the officers and personnel stationed here. After 30 years of service, the role of Public Security is ever evolving to better serve its residents and we do our best that this service will be available for another 30 years, Duncan E.Campbell, Eng., MBA Director General City of Westmount Westmounters Advocating Cycling Knowledge Organization (WACKO) To the editor: We are a group of recreational bicyclists that wish to introduce and preserve sanity, moderation, and consideration for others into the bike debate.less heat, more light. This a partial list of our credo: Cycling is healthy and environmentally desirable (and, politically correct).Westmount introduced the Bike Path for recreational enjoyment.Cyclists are entitled to consideration, safety, and facility by government aid and publicity; protection from automobiles, other cyclists, and other citizens.Likewise, it should be mandatory, legally and socially, that cyclists obey traffic laws, extend courtesy, understanding and respect to others, pedestrians, children, the elderly and physically impaired, wheelchair occupants, whether pushed or motorized. They should cooperate with the community by not trying to make self-indulgent demands that are inconvenient and financially burdensome to the community.Taking into account that the majority of citizens do not partake in bicycling in this area, they prefer other venues for biking, are physically unable, or, it is just not their bag.We wish to sit at the table when our municipal authorities convene consultative sessions to discuss future bicycle policies. Those who wish to join us hit the jackpot.” That was how the Westmount Municipal Association’s Bridget Blackader introduced Volunteer Citizen of the Year Jacqueline Neville at the WMA's annual general meeting on May 15.Surrounded by a crowd of friends and relatives, Neville was presented with the annual award in recognition for her tireless volunteer work in the Westmount community, particularly with the Meals on Wheels program.” Fifteen Years Ago May 25, 1995 10,000 SIGN PETITION: “So far, 10,000 people have signed a petition to keep the Queen Elizabeth Hospital open, reports a spokesperson from the action committee set up last week to save the hospital.Susan McGuire, the patient representative on the committee, said the committee expects to have more than 100,000 signatures by next month. She added that the petition along with letters of support from patients will be sent to the health minister in Quebec.” Twenty-Five Years Ago May 23, 1985 PCB CAUTION: “A special report made to Westmount city council members Tuesday night reveals that of the city’s 1,000 electrical distribution transformers, 25 are filled with PCB lig- uids.Sixteen are owned by the city’s electric utility and nine by private companies. They are located in large buildings with heavy electrical loads.Inspections and precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of these units, Mayor Brian Gallery told The Examiner.” Thirty Years Ago May 22, 1980 REFERENDUM MARCH: “Several Westmount store and home windows and at least one flower bed were the victims early Wednesday morning of a noisy but generally orderly march through eastern Westmount by referendum ‘Yes’ supporters protesting their loss.Police attempted but failed to divert all the marchers up Mount Royal at Atwater avenue. The crowd, which had started at the Paul Sauvé Arena and St Denis street and grew to a reported 3,000 strong, had dwindled to about 500 at Atwater and, according to police, only some 200 or 300 marchers made their way into Westmount.Westmounters kept out of sight and lights off inside their homes, supplying little provocation to the volatile demonstrators.” Forty-Five Years Ago May 21, 1965 PHEASANT DREAMS: “Westmount’s pheasants have their problems too.It seems the birds are being bothered by dogs who still have the instance to hunt. The dogs, owned by residents of the area, run loose in Summit Park despite a city bylaw stating that all dogs must be kept on a leash. The area is particularly hard to police. It seems most of the dogs owned by upper Westmounters are pure-bred types whose forebears made their living hunting.Instinct dies slowly, and the dogs when let loose continually flush the pheasants out of their hiding places. Some of the birds get fed up and head for less dog- frequented places such as Mount Royal Cemetery or neighbouring back yards.” COMMUNITY LIFE The Study throws benefit concert to help Haiti After receiving
