The look for 1961 may not be as rosy ia the industry as first supposed. There is reason to believe that Canadair, for example, may be having trouble selling the CL-44, which at one time was sert of scheduled to go to the Military Air Transport Services of the US Air Force. The contract was inked, so the story goes, but never signed because the elections sert of held things up.Also, Pan American was dickering, but nothing is! definite. This is unfortunate, because Canadair, while a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, an American firm, employs a great many Canadians and, let's face it, we need the business. The firm is having trouble, for some strange reason, selling the CL-41, the side-by-side Jet primary trainer.Of course, the RCAF would be the logical customer for this onc.* * * TO CONTINUE: The general feeling is that the RCAF just doesn't have the money to buy the small jet at the present time, even though Air Force people who have tested it say it would be a worthwhile investment. They would like to have all pilots slated to fly jets get right to LL The Unity Boys’ Club Talent Parade with Fred Johnston at the piano and Billy Smith at the drums entertained the inmates at the Federal Training Centre of St.Vincent de Paul last week as a fitting climax to a very busy and successful season, and the Variety Show was termed one of the greatest ever presented by our Talent Club.Ovation followed ovation as Appearing on Montreal Matinee, Mark Latoni and Pembroke MacDermott, Junior High students, told of their problems and hopes for their school newspaper known as ‘‘Montreal Bulletin”, Pembroke is editor and approves all material in the accepted way, while Mark is secretary and them without wasting time on conventional piston-driven aircraft.Well, we'll see about the new budget.Almost the same situation is going on with DeHavilland as far as the Army is concerned, although the US forces were impressed enough with the short-field performance Caribou | to place a substantial order.Again the rumor: the Canadian Army hasn't got the money to buy.And again, we'll see the defence budget.Getting back to the CL-44, it is said that it will be the cheapest operating aircraft of its type to fly, and it's hard to understand just why nobody will buy it in view of this — surely any airline hauling freight is interested in making more money.* * * THE OTHER SIDE: American manufacturers of light and business aircraft, on the other hand, anticipate a further increase in business. All major manufacturers are coming out with new models and great improvements to existing ones.In addition, there are some nearly-dead manufacturers who have rejuvenated their companies and jumped back into the swing of things. And, as expected, there is a rash of entirely new outfits jumping on the band wagon.Aircoupe, for example, is back on the market. The original manufacturers of this plane were bought out by the City of Carlsbad, New Mexico, which floated a $7 million bond issue to make the purchase. This is the little craft that flies like you drive a car — no rudder pedals, and it's practically impossible to spin or stall it.flip it, or otherwis do harm.* * + LIGHT AIRCRAFT: Although Piper advertises they have sold more of their aircraft than any other company in the world (and this is | probably true), Cessna is giving them a run for their money. In fact, Cessna is the world's leader in light plane manufacture. In a bid to increase their lead, they have come out with a whole string of new models this year, and with many modifications to existing ones.Even the familiar 172 has a new model, and a new name for an improved version.Piper are putting two entirely new aircraft on the line, as are Beech. It will be like the car market — hundreds to choose from.Lake | esa: is manufacturing a new version of the Skimmer: Mooney has a new all- metal aircraft — and so it goes! * * * NEWS AND NOTES: Jacques positive qualifications before they give you their votes. For instance, at least even chance that you can do as well as Alderman Paul Ouimet or C.H.Drury or Mayor J.C.Cushing - all of whose terms have this year or any vear.Westmount is well run.Why bother?they ask.Ho, hum.Fatality-free yeor is fine example A ANY have been the anguished bleats, almost all from motorists caught by it, against Westmount's radar timers for the detection of speeding cars. But loud is the praise of those who note that West.mount has just rounded out a vear free of traffic fatality.Radar cannot take all the credit for this fine and satisfying record.Vigilant policemen, adequate street lighting, well placed traffic signals and signs, one of the best works departments on the continent when it comes to keeping pavements clear and clean in all seasons — these are some of the other major yeasons.Perhaps best cause of this traffic safety success story: a citizenry both young and old conscious of the value of human life, exercising care whether behind the wheel or afoot.YOU SAY Drapeau’s proposal insult to Westmount Sir: 1 read your excellent Editorial ‘‘Annexation Bid is Outrage’ in the December issue of the 30th with interest and satisfaction. It is pungent and deservedly critical of the plan of the new ‘‘Political Twins” who apparently will do their utmost to impose their will upon the long suffering taxpayers of pourly governed Montreal. For the first time in that City’s history, it will be afflicted with a Party Government the members of which will, of course, concur in all that may be suggested by the Mayor and his aide de camp, the Chairman of the Executive Committee. It is by no means a pleasant prospect for Montreal's population, Since the new Administration is a temporary one and its future uncertain, its leaders would have been well advised to administer it in a manner to carn the appreciation of the taxpayers. But no! Immediately following his victory the Mavor came out with a blast that was as unexpected as it was calculated to arouse the indignation and protests of the municipalities that would lose their identity and usefulness when caught in the Island Metropolitan net.The instant and justifiable reaction of the Mayors of the threatened Municipalities was a stinging one and a well merited rebuke to the ambitious seekers for greater prestige and glory.Speaking more particularly of Westmount, has Montreal at any time had a higher standard of municipal efficiency and progress than the municipality that Mayor Drapeau und his Chief Lieutenant would absorb in their new municipal creation? As vour editorial properly points out, if Drapeau et al would want to learn how the best interests of Westmount's residents are cared for all they need do is to visit it and make comparisons.Westmount's Mayor and Aldermen attend strictly to what concerns their City's government and future. They do not call press conferences to give themselves importance. What is more (o their credit and splendid public spirit is that they serve without remuneration. This applies equally (o the well- koverned Town of Mount Royal, Outremont.Hampstead, Montreal West and other Municipalities, 1 have said and repeat that Montreal's Mayor would be much better employed in giving the taxpayers a much more effective police protection than is presently possible because of the entirely inadequate police force in number which notwithstanding because of the ber Annexation YOU SAY Westmount would lose its pride Sir: Westmount should definitely not be annexed by Moat- real.Maybe some other municipal- ilies should be annexed by Montreal — but not Westmount. It is true that we benifit from some Montreal services, but because of its (Westmount's) Joca- tion on the Island, Montrealers constantly use Westmount streets which we pay for and keep in good condition, Westmounters pay six per cent tax on all their purchases.Out of town people working in Montreal have their merchandise delivered at their homes paying only two per cent tax.If the City of Montreal needs extra money, we feel out of town people (outside the Island of Montreal) working in town should pay some kind of tax.1 feel the City of Westmount, if it were annexed by Montreal, would lose its well-deserved pride.Mr.and Mrs.R.Larese Fight Drapeau’s annexation plan Sir: Everybody should vote on this subject: nothing can happen against the will of the residents. We want Westmount as it is; that is why we live here. And please — fight for it (against annexation’! Christ to the Gentiles in the same period.Let us consider how the Christmas fact sheds light on the nature of things.Let me remind you again that when a man thinks there are only three directions in which his thought can run.He may think of the material world, or of the world of men including himself, or he can think of God.There is nothing else. And the Coming of Our Lord, that Coming which St.John sums up in the hrase — “The Word became Flesh, and dwelt among us” — sheds light on each of those ways of thinking. The dominant idea of the world tin those days was that matter in itself was evil.Spirit shared the divine nature, but matter was evil. The body was a tomb or a cell in which the spirit was imprisoned. The wise man was one who subjected his body to any kind of restraint in order to set the soul free; or, on the other hand, the wise man despised the body so much that it did not really matter what it did.So long as the soul was not involved, the body could indulge in any form of excess or immorality. Then came the Incarnation; “the Word became Flesh, and dwelt among us and we beheld His Glory.” Once aman has accepted the fact that God's Son has come into the world of things and has limited Himself by those material things, he must look on matter, not as evil, but as something that is worthy of God's use.If one takes a low view of material things one may abuse those things to his own profit. The farmer.for example, may think of his farm only as a source of quick profit. He may take everything from the soil and leave it a desert. But if he takes a high view of the soil as something which God's Son has shared with him, he will treat his farm with reverence and behave with a sense of responsibility to it.The lumberman will reforest as he cuts because he will not leave that mountain side without its covering of trees. The man who thinks of laAd only as a source of profit would cover Mount Royal with roads and apartments. The Incarnation takes us back to the Creation, when God made and God saw that everything He had made was good, so good, in fact, that He could share in it.Because He shares in it we must treat it with reverence. That is the Light which the Christmas story sheds on material things.— 7:00 am.Holy Communion RELIGIOUS SCHOOL 9:00 am.Children's Service PRESBYTERIAN Regular classes Saturday Mornings at 10:00 am.Holy Communion 9:30 o'clock for High Schoo! These two precepts should be printed in large Jetters at the head of every modern housewife’s shopping list.It is imperative these days that, in order .o get the best value for her grocery money, she have not only the wisdom of Solomon, but also the mathematical ability of an Einstein. This is aptly illustrated in the buying of one of the olde and still most essential of foods — our daily bread. In the first place, the housewife needs to know a great deal about dietetics.Should she use whole wheat, rye or reinforced white bread? Then she must balance the caloric content of bread against its nutritional value in her family's diet.Often it is what is spread on the bread which raises the calorie count to an alarming figure, not the bread itself. Then, especially if she has a large family of young people who gobble up loaf after bread, our housewife must lay aside her role of dietitian and assume that of mathematician. For in this Province.outside of the city of Montreal, a multiplicity of weights and prices confront her.In Montreal itself the | Provincial standards of 12 and, 24-ounce loaves are rigidly en-! forced; but, in many other cities and towns, you may buy a loaf of bread which appears to be the size of a 24-ounce loaf but which really weighs anywhere from 16 to 22 ounces.True, the we.ght is printed on the wrapper but how many customers notice it?Also, the price will probably be less than the 24-ounce loaf, but if you take the time to do simple arithmetic you will find that the price per ounce is exactly the same.Indeed, sometimes it is a fraction NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR DIVORCE NOTICE is hereby given that EVA LIEBERMAN KNOPF, of the City and District of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Housewife, of a cent higher than the heavier loaf. The fact is that, because these loaves are made by using less dough in the same size pan, you appear to be getting more for your money than you actually receive.1f you take the trouble to watch the weight and count the cost, you may find that nutritionally the higher priced but heavier loaf offers more per slice than the cheaper, lighter one.In many other products, also there is a definite trend toward putting less in the same size package as was formerly used, at a price which at first glance looks like a bargain, but which turns out to be an increase when translated into cents per ounce. The only way in which the consumer can combat this is to become a combination of economist, auditor and sleuth — i.others words, watch that weight and count the cost, * .ot of Famous films | to be shown al Museum Two famous suspense films of the late 1920's and early1930's will be seen at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in January. They will make up the Wednesday night film programs on January 11 and January 19, with two showings, one at 6:30 p.m.and one at 8:30 p.m.on each occasion. The Wednesday night programs are open to the public free of charge.First of the two films scheduled will be Blackmail, an Alfred Hitchcock production, and the first talking film ever produced in England.Blackmail was shot first in its entirety as a slien{ movie, but its completion coincided with the widespread use of sound by several Hollywood companies, so that a desperate decision to re- film the bulk of the picture in sound had to be taken by British International Picture.Since Anny Ondra, the female star, was a Ger- will apply to the Parliament of Canada at the present or next following session thereof, for a bill of divorce from her husband, SIDNEY KNOPF, Merchant, of the City and District of Montreal, Province of Quebec, on the grounds of adultery.DATED AT MONTREAL this 14th day of December, 1960, JOSEPH 8S, CAPLAN, Advocate 132 St.James Street West, man, speaking almost no English her voice had to be dubbed in by an unkown actress, Joan Barry (who was soon to become important in her own right).Blackmail, around a girl who murders in self-defense and her detective- sweetheart who is assigned to the case, sees the blackmailer crash through the dome of the British Museum. The film quickly be- came one of the most famous in IN THE bomen ’s Reali IODE nominations Nominations will take place at the next business mecting of the Canon Scott Chapter IODE at the home of Miss Mary Hutchings,’ 2068 Marlowe avenue.Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.WA monthly meeting | Westmount Park -
