thereafter Dominion Day is celebrated as a legal national holiday what otherwise would be a working day.on Mayor Cushing is expected to proclaim Mondav, July 3 a legal holiday in honor of Dominion Dav However.this will be of little real significance to those residents of Westmount who earn their living in Montreal.In any event, it should not be a matter of local or provincial option.This is a national holiday and should be so declared upon a national level It rankles in the minds of many non-Roman Catholics that a secular holiday, St.Jean Baptiste Dav, is a legal holiday in the Province of Quebec and that Dominion Day is not This is a trifle unfair, we think.Dominion Day is a national day of celebration and it would be presumptuous of Quebec to decide it should be a legal holiday when the Federal Government has not seen fit to do so.Also, as Quebec is largely Roman Catholic it is as natural that St.Jean Baptiste Day be a legal holiday as Christmas is in a largely Christian country.The two holidays should not be compared simply because of their proximity.We think that the achievement by Canada of dominion status should be given the same recognition as the Declaration of Independence is given in the United States.The Americans would never stand for July 4 not being a national holiday.Why do we Canadians put up with an equally untenable situation?8 ep No language con Now having acquired so much educational impedimenta what use will you make of it?You may postpone the decision and go to college not knowing what lies beyond.Or you may now decide and go to college to make further preparation for what lies beyond.On what to do you make your choice?1 had a student once who spent his time studying college courses to see where he could get the best looking hood for the least amount of study.On the other hand, it would seem that a few students aim at getting the largest income for the least effort.That is by no means confined to college students, I wonder how many consider where they are most needed after their college courses; or.in fact, where they can contribute most to the welfare of the community now that their school graduation has been reached.The great temptation is to take a job at once, and earn that lovely elusive thing called money.It is the lure of money that draws off a good many who ought to take a college course and go into a profession.There js a never-ending complaint that there are not enough doctors and dentists and surgeons and nurses; there is an even greater outcry at the lack of clergy and school teachers.The reasons seem to be that the student will have to pay out a lot of money for education, and wait a long time for an income; and secondly, that the income does not compare with the glittering rewards of finance and industry.In other words, commercialism has overcome idealism, I wish that every student on matriculation would submit himself and herself to an aptitude test that would take the medical and nursing, the clerical and teaching professions seriously, quite apart from the time and money involved.The country would profit by it.Gegnaist and Director of Meusle: Bonalé Mashey, B.Mes.| B a ene tit Preshylerian pensions compare unfavorably West End ministers played a prominent role in the first week of the 87th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church held in Toronto this month, Rev.Eric A.Beggs of Saint Laurent.preached at the first service held in Knox.the Assem- biv Church in Toronto: Rev.C.C.Cochrane of Westmount addressed the overture of the Montreal Presbytery: and Rev.John Simms of Montreal West served on working committees of the Assembly.Rev.C.C.Cochrane.speaking Saturday morning, pointed out that retired Anglican and United Church clergy receive higher pensions than their Presbyterian counterparts.In both these churches.however, a much larger contribution is made to their funds by both congregations and ministers.Before the matter was referred to the Board to report next year, it was pointed out that one was only entitled to the things for which he was willing to pay.The full pension for ministers has been raised to $1200, an increase of $100, and for minister's widows, $600 with corresponding increases for orphan children, it was amnounced by Clarence M.Pitts, Ottawa.chairman of the Pension Board.Perspective needed \u201cIn our day when we are almost overwheimed by the scientific achievements of the recent past we need to recover the sense of the sovereignty of God,\u201d said Rev.Eric A.Beggs at the service recently.Mr.Beggs.pointed out to the Assembly and the congregation which filled the Toronto cathedral of Presbyterianism, that the second need is to regain the concept of Christ as Saviour.Salvation is in Christ alone he averred.Man cannot redeem himself.Finally man needs to gain perspective and realize the Holy Spirit of God in sanctification.The prime requisite of humanity's survival is not scientific progress but moral and spiritual progress.The Moderator of the Assembly, the Rt.Rev.Dr.Robert Taylor, Medicine Hat, Alta, who was elected moderator on Wednesday evening to succeed the Very, Rev.Principal Robert Lennox, of the Presbyterian Col- iege, Montreal assisted the min- nister of the Church, the Rev.Dr.William Fitch in the conduct of worship.Saturday afternoon the corner stone of Ewart College, the new Presbyterian Missionary and Deaconess Training School was laid by the wife of the Lieuten- ent Governor of Ontario, Mrs.J.Keiller MacKay.The new name honours the founder of the School Mrs.Thomas Ewart in whose home it started in 1897.The site, 156 St.George st.is adjacent to the campus of the University of Toronto and Knox College.Commissioners from the Synod of Montreal and Ottawa serving on the working committees of the Assembly included: Rev.John Simms, Montreal West;
