By Lorry Mclanis FFE FMI MIRE MEME MEN NME III MEME Canadair’s third Canadian-made Lockheed CF-104 Star fighter made its first official flight at Cartierville last Wednesday afternoon, arousing the interest of the gathering of press, St.Laurent Mayor Marcel Laurin and Cana- dair officials.Only the regular collection of gulls on the field refused to be impressed. The flight consisted of a takeoff, a slow pass over the field and a landing. All went smoothly, except the drag chute came off the aircraft when it touched down.During the test, Canadair officials were heard to whisper, “I hope he holds it back." They were referring to Bill Kidd, the test pilot at the con- trois. There is no doubt that he had to hoid it back. This plane did more than 1,400 mph on a straight-and-level one day last week, and last Wednesday it lazed around at 550 mph, or little more than one third of its speed.Anyway, the flight was interesting and we learned that Canadair will get into top production about January of 1962.For those who are worried about the possibility of noise, the manufacturers have taken pains to keep things quiet, including baffles for the normal engine runup, and jets of water to quiet the sound of the afterburners.Besides, there's barely a whis-# per when it's idling, although it sounds like a sick moose when the afterburners are cut in on takeoff. After a lazy climb-out, all flight testing will be done above 40,000 feet about 150 miles north of Montreal.» » » What won't they think of next? The U.S.Army has a radar so accurate and powerful it can tel) the steps are brisker than a man's, the difference can be picked up on the ultra-sensitive machine.» * » The Montreal Flying Club has bought a new Cessna 150 to replace the one crashed by a 19-year old the report delivered to Westmount Rotary by E.H.S.Piper, QC, on the subject of the Assigned Risk Plan under the new Highway Victims Indemnity act.Judging from my own interpretation of reports in the press, and the pamphlets | have seen on the new system, there seem to be good and bad points. That innocent victims of road accidents should receive some form of compensation is a very worthy cause. To remove the danger of the drunk.the madman and the generally irresponsible driver from our roads is move deserving the full support of all drivers in the province, These.for sure, are the good points. What 1 do not agree with, however, is the inauguration of a system by a purely commercial body, that is designed to fill their coffers, and is being given the protection of the law.As 1 read the new act, it was devised by the insurance business, will be implemented by the insurance business, and will most handsomely reward the insurance business. For a government, provincial or national, to have any part in a glorified sales campaign is, surely.very wide of the aims of democracy. As 1 see it.a young man.maybe a family man, buying his first car, must show financial responsibility. With this.we all concur. This same young man.unless he has a far from average background, will not be able to show the requisite amount of hard cash in the bank.He will, therefore.have to obtain insurance coverage.Herein lies the tale A new insurance case is liable to be classed as an assigned risk, as the insurance firm have no previous knowledge of him.To bring that down to common language.the insurance firm will rob that young man of a higher premium under the protection of the assigned risk plan, with full government backing. Are we, sir, to be thrown purely at the mercy of the big insurance firms? Is there to be no control over the premiums and rates they chan charge?Would not it have been better to simply pass an act which made a provincially recognized road insurance essential, and not to have played so half heartedly into the laps of the Toa ; 1 8 SAY Absence of occupation is not rest; a mind quite vacant i 0 mind distressed.— William Cowper Company picnics are a big bother By MARIE LONDON “For the whole family!” These words are enough to strike terror in the hearts of wives and mothers at least once a year when hubby’s company, the “club”, or the Sunday school announces the annual picnic. Some picnics are free, all expenses being absorbed by the recreation funds, others charge a fee ranging from $1 for adults and 50 cents for children (ice cream extra), to 25 cents per person.Free or not, the official summons to the wide open spaces usually elicits groans in most Canadian families, or so 1 gather, from wives and mothers at the bridge club.Picnics fall into two categories — completely un-organized or maddeningly over - organized. You can usually tell right from the start which is going to be which.LJ REE.The un-organized one can be spotted a month away when nobody is quite sure when or where it is going to be held.how much, if anything it will cost or who is in charge of the big event.Nobody seems to know where to get tickets, ‘use the stubs for your free ice cream), whether a bus will be chartered, or if you have to make a discreet call to your dearest friends and see if we can use THEIR car.An important point to establish before getting to the picnic spot is will there or will there not be soft drinks, milk or water readily available, or should you bring your own. It's wiser to bring your own anyway.because you might find the only way to get a drink is with the ticket stub, and after all, Junior might just want more than one coke! (It's handy to try and have a lot of stubs, anyway.because you usually need them for ice cream or raffle prizes).Locating the picnic spot can be a fascinating all-morning occupation and really smart husbands give up as soon as possible and turn back home.If you're going to the most popular of all picnic places, St.Helen's Island.don’t worry about a thing! Not only is it easy to find, but there are usually dozens of picnics going on simultaneously at the island, and if you get bored with your own, you can always drop in to another one.Nobody will notice one more family, especially if the children are crying noisily General concensus of opinion is that the un-organized picnic is the best kind — where you don’t have to worry about how many races your children are going to lose whether it will seriously affect their egos or social standing. And you can eat whenever you want to, without waiting for some ‘cheerful Charlie to blow the whistle, But even this kind of picnic has its problems—with so many * already rich insurance business? These, sir, are my impressions. If any of your readers, or even yourself, would care to correct me, I stand prepared.I am willing to learn my mistakes, and no doubt many others would be interested in hearing ‘the other side’ of this matter.J.RW.E., Westmount unplanned hours 0 to fill, you might end up sitting beside the president's wife making pleasant chit-chat for three or four hours. This can be very trying, she in her dark linen sheath and picture straw hat and you in that old pair of beat-up jeans and T-shirt the kids persuaded you to wear. And it's at this sort of picnic ‘““Dad’’ might successfully smuggle in with the lunch a quart or two of beer, which he can enjoy undisturbed because the officials will be too busy counting ticket stubs and worrying about the ice cream shortage to bother him.But unless you feel in tip-top shape, you should avoid the over-organized picnic. This is the one easily recognizable weeks in advance — all kinds of mimeographed forms flutter out of your hubby's pay envelope, worded something like this: ‘Come on, gang! It's time for the annual picnic, September 1, for staff and their families.Games, prizes, free ice cream and coffee! Let's make this the best picnic yet!!” At the bottom of the sheet there are a few little typewriter dashes for you to indicate how many of your hapless young will be attending. No ice cream shortage there! Two buses are chartered, which is usually one bus too many, but the recreation officials laugh it off in a determined effort to be happy and carefree all the way.The minute you get off the bus, signs tacked to trees greet you with supposedly amusing messages for picnickers — such as: ‘keep off the grass, “no children allowed’, ‘beware of the sharks,” etc.Exhausted by the bus trip (of course yours was the one with noisy teenagers giving lusty renditions of popular and not so popular songs), you sink down on the nearest bench or rock or patch of grass. But not for long — the organizers are up and at it — and it's time for a swim or a hike or a baseball game or something equally strenuous, About 15 minutes after lunch, it’s time for the kiddies’ races, and unless you're quick, somebody will commandeer you into holding the finishing line, or grabbing the winners or writing down their names. If your only involvement is having your children run (confined in a potato sack, or tied to somebody else’s ankle), it won't be easy, either.By tradition, parents of racing children at picnics hover at the finishing line shouting, ‘Run! Run!” or “C'mon! C'mon!” or if these stick in your throat as you watch your youngsters trip, crawl and drag themselves along, “Hurry! Hurry!” You might think the worst is over by now.But it isn’t.Now it's time for the wives’ potato sack race and three legged race. Can you outrun the president's wife?In a potato sack?Or more (Continued on page 11) 04 ACROSS 44.Bedouin Devi.FFE ELBE 2.South DOWN ate mel EICHT American 1.Italian 38.Mait rodent traveler bev- 8.Political 8.An on astringent 80, Sna; 9.Fliesalone 8.Army pis 10.Pieces of officers $1.Majes- —— 4.Like tie 1] 13.Jewish 6.Likea 22.Mine CIRO! group of dedicated workers at Temple Beth Sholom, August is a busy month — a time to show friends and interested families through the beautiful new West- End Temple, a time to answer questions about the practices and customs at this newest congregation in the Liberal tradition of Judaism. This group of men, members of the Board of Trustees and the Seating Committee, are active earlier than usual this year — due to the early arrival of the High Holy Days.In fact, the seating committee will be in attendance, in the evenings, on August 22, 24, 29, 30, 31 and September 5, 6, 7 and 10th.In accordance with the customs of Reform Judaism, Temple Beth Sholom inspires its members with its beautiful family worship every Friday evening.Accompanied by a choir of mixed voices, led by the Cantor, the services are conducted in English, with the basic prayers in Hebrew. This makes the service more intelligible and meaningful.During the High Holy Days, special services are conducted for the younger children.Accordingly, from an early age.children, as well as parents, think of Temple Beth Sholom as a place to come for inspiration, instruction and fellowship.Virtually unique among Jewish congregations, is the all-inclusive family membership plan, now being offered to non-affiliated families.Seats for the High Holy Days, which are reserved on a first-come- first-served basis, are included in this plan, as are religious classes for all children from kindergarten to confirmation, Hebrew classes once a week, plus all other facilities. Those interested in learning more about Temple Beth Sholom, its services, customs and educational facilities, are invited to phone the Temple office, to make an appointment with a member of the committee in attendance.Rev.James
