administration has wrong view A BRILLIANT young Montreal council- Jor.John Lynch-Staunton.sald Wednesday at the Dorchester-Kiwanis Club that a person working in one municipality.living in another and visiting in yet another does not have the feeling he is fravelling through “foreign” coun: tries. He said we all consider ourselves as Montreal- €Ts.This is a grave error in thinking on the part of the Montreal administration, but pardonable: they are so close to the woods, they can’t see the trees.Certainly a motorist driving across the city knows, for example.he is in foreign (call it what vou will.the feeling is there) territory when, for example he is in Westmount. He knows if he breaks a speed Yaw there.the consequences will be much graver than for the same offence in come other “foreign” muni- cipalitv.Similarly, the same motorist knows that he can speed in certain places without fear.and if he is caught, a small bribe will soon see him on his wav.It is quite true that, again for an example.a West- mounter visiting in Toronto does not say.“I'm from Westmount.” Certainly he savs he is from Montreal. But when he's in Montreal and he is asked where he lives.he savs, “I live in Westmount.” Even within the City of Montreal, this “foreign” country idea still stands : how many people when asked where they live answer that they live in Snowdon, or the Point, or wherever it is within the city bound- aies? There may be a lot to say for the one island.one city idea.but the very cosmopolitan makeup of Montreal in the broad sense will ensure that never.never will all citizens reside together in one big.happy family sething.Sir, In view of the threat to the autonomy of Westmount and in the face of the possibility of annexation by Montreal, 1 am amazed at the lack of interest on the part of residents of our city.We appear to have an altitude of ‘it can‘t happen here” — and this can be fatal.} do not for a moment believe the statement of Montreal’s mayor that ‘many West- mounters” wrote to him, asking to have Montreal take over Westmount — but 1 do know that the vast proportion of local taxpayers didn't bother to write to the newspapers protesting the possibility of such a takeover.‘Share the burden’ Anyone can see the reason lor Montreal's interest in grabbing the suburbs. They are over-spending on the subway and the Fair, and want others to share the burden, Misery loves company. And increased taxes would not be the worst burden we would have to face, il Mayor Drapeau is successful in his drive for more taxable teri- tory.We have the best street.cleaning, the best street-re- pairing, the best snow-removal forces on the island.Compare them with Montreal.Sure, some of the down-town main thoroughfares are almost as well cleared of snow as the streets of Westmount, but have you ever travelled down some of the streets in N.D.G.three days after a storm? And street repairs: why there is hardly a time at all that a plethora of Montreal streets are not torn up for one reason or other — and usually at the most inconvenient and most ill-advised time, such as during the tourist days of July and August. In the ‘good old days’ of vaudeville, there was scarcely a comedy team playing Loew's Theatre that didn't include in its repertoire a gag about Montreal putting zippers Westmount Library is well-run Sir, 1 want to write and say how much | appreciate the kind services of the young ladies who handle affairs at the
