[" Renewal residents rebuffed The only ‘action at Monday evening's quarter-hour formal Westmount City Council meeting came after itadjourned. It came in a brief exchange between Mayor Michael Tucker and Architect Joseph Baker.1087 Greene avenue, tousle-haired chairman of an urban renewal ligison committee of residents of the southeast corner of the city.Mr.Baker had received a letter from His Worship, in reply to one he had written last month on the continuing participation of the committee in the renewal program.Mr.Baker wished to respond. The mayor.obviously nettled by the presence at yet another Council meeting of Mr.Baker and some dozen supporters.suggested that if the delegation had anything further to say it should- be done in the form of a letter.which Council would in due course consider. That ended it, so far as the solons were concerned. They retired to their committee room, adjoining the formal Council chamber.Ald Jean Richer stayed behind for a few minutes to consult with Mr.Baker.Whereupon, Mr.Baker and several of his colleagues held an informal press conference.the burden of which was that they would be replying to the mayor.as suggested: that they feel that they no longer are officially recognized but that they should be consulted in future decisions affecting the renewal area.and that they will be submitting a brief to Hon.Paul Hellyer's task force on housing.due in Montreal Oct.22 and 23.MAYOR'S REPLY Mayor Tucker Tuesday released the text of a letter he had sent last Friday to Mr.Baker, in reply to Mr.Baker's of Sept.23 in which the complaint was made that the citizens’ liaison committee of the southeast renewal area was being ignored by Council.(See EXAMINER, page 1, Sept.26).Mr.Tucker feit that Mr.Ba- .ker’s committee had completed its work at the workshup stage, in Februrary 1967, on the urban renewal.scheme; promised that interested groups would be consulted before the final study is present- .ed to the Quebec Housing Corporation; affirmed that the liaison committee recommended in the Sunderiand report, comprised of representatives of the municipal and tenants’ associations, ‘street groups” and the city administration would be formed once the scheme has been approved and before implementation. The mayor asserted that every effort had been made to keep all interested citizens informed and that no inquiries from any source have been ignored.(Full text of the mayor's letter to Mr.Baker appears on page 11.) by a young married couple from France in late September in the Montreal district. Not only was the pair caught, sentenced and faced deportation but all but one item in some $2,000 worth.of goods taken from merchants was recovered.Additional sentences, wrapping up the case, are expected to be handed down by Judge A.Stalker, QC, this evening in Westmount Municipal Court.Forged license The saga began Sept.21 with the first complaint from a Westmount Square merchant that he found himself with a worthless cheque. It had been accepted on a purchase but the identification, provided by a falsified Quebec driver's license, proved to have been on the forged name of a French-language broadcasting personality residing in Cote des Neiges.Soon Westmount Police had four complaints from Westmount Square, involving five worthless cheques, and a fifth complaint involved a sixth similar cheque from Alexis Nihon Plaza. From descriptions provided, suspicion fell upon an Outremont couple after investigation began in earnest Sept.25.Westmount detectives led by Sgt.-Det.J.B.Whiteford put their suspects under surveillance. The object at this stage was not only to effect arrest and conviction but to recover the goods taken under false pretences.Six days on trail Six days of day-and-night trailing and watching established that the couple lived in an apartment at 1485 Bernard avenue west.On Oct.1, as Westmount Police were preparing to close in, liaison with Montreal Police revealed that the big-city force had some 20 similar complaints on its hands, and there was another in Pointe Claire.A Montreal officer was invited to join the Westmount investigating team.At 9:30 o'clock that evening they closed in on the pair on the sidewalk as they neared their apartment house. The two were taken inside and a search of the flat yielded the wide array of goods, including jewelry.clothing and house hold items described by the store complainants — everything, in fact, but a $200 hi-fi set purloined from Westmount Square.Arrested were Bernard Lou- bat, 26, a journalist, who came here from France about three and a half years ago.and his wife, Katherine, 20, who is believed to have come to Canada sometime before her husband. They were married here and have a two-and-a-half-year-old child.(Continued on Page 12) NEXT WEEK'S WEATHER by ERIC NEAL Montreal region 1968 October 12 to 19
