mutual aid call for assistance to Outremont and St Laurent firemen.A 11/2-inch hose was pulled up the ramp to extinguish the fire which destroyed the car, according to fire chief William Timmons, who directed the operation. The fire, which police said was started by an electrical problem in the car, was confined to the blue 1980 Subaru which had been under repair. It was valued at $1,500.Citizen awareness important to crime prevention: Mayor By LAUREEN SWEENEY National Crime Prevention Week (Nov 2-8) was proclaimed in West- mount Monday night by Mayor Brian Gallery at the city council meeting as a special time for citizens to join with police and public security forces to promote a greater awareness of crime, The week was declared as an occasion for “all of us to heighten our awareness and to renew our commitment to the pursuit” of crime prevention.Citizens were invited by Alderman Paul Fortin, the city’s commissioner of public security, to visit Victoria Hall this week to learn more about Westmount's Neighborhood Watch program and other crime prevention efforts. An exhibit by the Public Security Unit will be open to the public there between 10 am and 8 pm throughout the week ending tomorrow night. An MUC police display which had been scheduled for Alexis Nihon Plaza was cancelled as a result of the fire in the east tower last week, explained Director Gilbert Coté, station 23 commanding officer, who was asked to address the city council meeting. The station, he said, would be concentrating on launching a community awareness program in which th station's five hardest-hit crime areas’.would each be assigned a special constable to go door-to-door to meet with citizens.Four of these chosen are in St Henri, he said. One is in Westmount, the commercial block of Alexis Nihon Plaza.A new address check program is also being launched during Crime Prevention Week by the Public Security Unit, according to the director of that force, Richard McEnroe. This program will alert West- mount residents whose civic numbers are difficult to read or need attention, he said (see separate sto- Ty).ne SRI nt Car ee ans carie PE Se 5 mat Sh pr, a = présentées à la communauté chrétienne pour répondre à cette exigence de fidélité à son baptême.La meilleure façon de fêter St-Léon, ce sera sûrement de prendre au sérieux son témoignage et son In the lounge at the Maple Leaf Wing 301 of the RCAF Association, on the corner of Metcalfe avenue and Sherbrooke street, is a memorial painting dedicated to Mr Mynarski.Listening to Mr de Breyne recount a number of personal experiences, the war seemed to be a time of close bonds and excitement coupled with depression and extreme frustration. At times the war also wavered on the bizarre. On a bombing raid over Louvain, Belgium, “a university town like Oxford or Cambridge,’ Mr de Brey- ie The plane, a project of the Canadian War Plane Heritage Foundation, should be ready to fly Butler, 63, like Mr de Breyne, said he felt compelled to join the fray because of Hitler.Living 60 miles outside of London at the outbreak of the war, he joined the Home Guard at the age of 16.“Canadians were laying down minefields with tape over them along the (U.K.) coast in case of an invasion,” Mr Butler remembered.“My instructions were to look for the enemy and if occasions, crews bailed out, if they were lucky enough not to be “blown out,” and were generally allowed to escape without being fired upon.“It was a cat and mouse con game,” the of the car.Air bags were used to raise the rear of the large moving truck so the car could be towed away. The accident occurred as both the truck, a North American Van Lines vehicle from Calgary, and the car, a black Honda, were attempting to turn right onto Sherbrooke after proceeding north on Wood. The truck, which had been temporarily stopped while negotiating the turn, apparently started to Saturday were the Mar- ianopolis girls of rugger — once again, boldly entering a domain traditionally reserved for the most barbaric of men.Standing opposite them, across the, St Julie pitch, were an equal nu of enthusiastic rugby players from McGill University.“Remember rugby isa barbarian's game played by gentlemen,” Marian- opolis coach Edward Heath told his girls in the tense moments before kickoff.“So play like lady barbarians!” After a tribal-like rallying cry from Marianopolis, the content of which cannot be printed here, the sides took their positions and the match began, albeit tentatively.Twenty minutes into the match, however, McGill backs, led by the determined and forceful running of inside centre Catherine Mégias, began to threaten inside Marian- opolis’ 22-metre line.It was then that a previously lazy game of tackling by default took on a more animated presence. The all-Westmount backrow of flankers Tiffany Duckworth, Linda Kessler and eightman Anne Coyle bore down and unleashed a series of devastating tackles to protect the Marianopolis tryline and maintain a scoreless tie up to the half.Questionable call McGill continued to press in the second half and soon built up a 10-0 lead on two tries, the latter of which was due to a questionable call by the referee.Marianopolis then responded moments later as Tina Sossoyan, the college's top offensive weapon, drove the ball in singlehandedly, resulting in four points.Despite a number of penalties and scrums on the McGill 5-metre line in the closing minutes, Marianopolis failed to carry the ball over for the try and the tying convert. The final score was 10-4.Nursing her wounds in the aftermath of the match, Miss Duckworth admitted her mother “thinks I'm crazy playing this game. But I love it.” By THOR VALDMANIS For the Prince Albert avenue resident and her rugger mates the game is just like any other, a vehicle with which to channel their energy and joie de vivre.“Some friends find it (playing rugby) a little strange,” Miss Kessler, a resident of Carleton avenue, chipped in, “but who cares?” Many of the rugger girls seem to subscribe to the theory, as Windsor avenue resident Miss Coyle put it, “Anything boys can do, we can do better” While women's rugby is relatively new, it seems to have already introduced some unique aspects. At one point, a McGill forward injured an opponent with a perfectly clean tackle, but opted to stay behind the play anyway and help her.“You would never see that in a guys' rugby match,” one spectator said.Lillian Lai, a second-year Marian- opolis player, agreed.“I think guys, when they maul for example, will step on anybody and anything that's in the way of the ball.“I think when girls do it they have a lot more sensitivity. They watch where they're stepping.” Not stereotypes The stereotypes of rugby women — for instance, the frustrated tomboy, who only got clothes for Christmas despite pleading for hockey skates — do not hold, the girls will tell you, and they seem to have a point. In fact, much like their male counterparts, rugby women come in all shapes and sizes, depending, of "course, on what position they happen to play.Props tend to be wide and sturdy, second rows tall and lanky, eightmen rough and tough, backs outrageously fancy but delicate, hookers street- smart and fearless, and flankers cunning and glory-charged.To a great degree, the Marian- opolis team was molded, or sculpted, this year by coach Edward Heath. As was his trademark when coaching Selwyn House School football and rugby teams a few years ago, Mr Heath, a former Quebec heavyweight boxing champion, ran the Marianopolis team hard.“He's a little insane,” Miss Duck- Carrique leads LCC Lions to Montreal football top Last Sunday, the Lower Canada College Lions captured the Senior High School Football championship at
