it is to concentrate all power and authority absolutely in one centre, The Czar is the earthly Providence of the soldier and officer, as well as the embodiment of the military power and glory of his country.I have seen old officers go overcome with this mark of distinction that they went about for ten min- ates after like children, weeping, with the prired decoration in their hands, showing it round.half dazed.No system can be imagined more calculated to stimulate individual efforts to the utmost.Yet, with all thisspurring there is something wanting.It is the individuality and the habit of spontaneous action, which only the education snd modes of thought of a free people ofn supply.Whether it ba the long standing taint of serfdom, whether it be too much imperialism, the initiative is wholly absent.You tell the Russian what to do, and he will spring to it like an obedient child.In a year it never would have occurred to him to do it of himself.+ Fires.Quesre, Nov.6.—A fire at three o'clock this merning destroyed the atabling attached to the house occupied by Mr.Partridge, on the St.Lewis Road ; A.It appears so by the writ.Q.Is it not true that said item isa correct digest of the action of the Bank against the ex-directors?A.I do not know.I think that the article shown me corresponds with the action taken by the Bank against the ex-directors.Q.Is it not true that this action was referred to, and ils details given in all the city papers ; and that in the Montreal daily Witness of August the 4th, over a column is devoted to publication of the Bank’s declaration?A.I believe so, but I deny having hed anything to do with those publications.Q.Did you yourself distribute any printed copies of the Bank's declarations to third parties?A.I may have given one or two.Q.Are yon aware of your counsel or the directors distributing them ?A.Iamalmost sure they did not, as the copies have never been out of my possession.I cannot speak for counsel.Adjourned till 10 a.m.Thursday.New Advertisements this pm Z THE QUEENS, TORONTO, ONT.neem EN a Reflnibaln§ The leading Hotel in the Dominion; with haud- some Passenger Elevator, thoroughly heated with steam throughout; patronised by Royalty and the best families.Prices graduated sinee 1874, viz.: $2.50, $3 00, $3.50; Rooms with Bath, &c., or Suite, $4.00 per day.McGAW & WINNETT, Proprietors.Montreal, 7th November, 1877.283-1y SALE OF A SAW MILL, &c.THE SHERIFF of Joliette will sell at the Church door of the Parish of Repentigny, on Wednesday, the 14th November Inst , at ELEVEN a.m., the SAW MILL PROPERTY, at Repentigny, of Messrs.CUSHING BROS., consisting of about two arpents, three perches and some feet, on the Queen’s High Boad, ana a SAW MILL, Fngines end other Machinery, Booms, private houses and their dependencies, The timber limits on "he Rivers L’Assomption, Black, Ducharme, Maskinonge sud Lacowarreau, and in the townships of Ki'kenny, Wexford, Don- oaster and Chertrey, can be acquired by the purchaser on application to Messrs.BETHUNE & BETHUNE, Advoeates, Montreal, 7th November, 1877.263 DERTAKING in all its Branches.ROBERT ANGUS, 71133 Craig street.WIBE-FRAME TURKISH CHAIRS, the best Easy Chair in use.to order b; Made y ROBERT ANGUS, Upholsterer and Undertaker, 711 & 7114 Craig st.ORPERS FOR EVERY KIND OF UPHOLSTERY WORK and CURTAIN BANGING 3 romptly attended to.ROBERT ANGUS, Upholsterer and Undertaker, 711 & 711% Craig st M ETALLICand other COFFINS AND CABKETS always in Stnek ; full assort- mont of Trimmings, Orapes, âc.; First-class ROBERT ANGUS, Undertaker and Uphoisterer, 263 711 & 711%; Craly street.Bow Advertisements this p.m.Six O'clock P.M.Extra Edition.50 CABES OF DRY GOODS DAMAGED BY SOFT WATER, Part of tte se goods ave wet and part are quite perfect.The whole has to be sold THIS WHEK at unprecedentedy Low Prices: 10 ba.es trey Cotton (wet), only 4c.8 cates good Flannel Bhirting (wet), only 126.8 casts Scarlet Flannel (wet), only 15c.8 bales Groy Blankets (nut damaged), t0c per palr, 8 Lales Trimmed Hor:e Rlamkets (not damaged), worth at least $2.50, for only $1.25 each.1% cazes beautiful Plaid Flannel Shirtiag (quite perfect), worth 44 c, for only 20c.8cases first quality English Print, only Se.1 case of Towels, onty 3e.And reveral other small lotr, more or less da maged.Fur the price of all our Dry Gods, gat one of our Books.7 A.PILON & CO, 615 and 617 St.Catherine Street, MONTREAL, AT THE GREEN BALLA.PILON.L.J.PRLLETIER.$6.50 PER BARREL.= FOR SUPERIOR EXTRA FLOUR.SHANNON & CULLENS, 455 COMMISSIONERS STREBT, Orvrosrrs 99, Axn's MARKET, 255 + FURS AT COST! but somehow they have lost the life and spirits they used to have.Perhaps with some of them it may arise, he thinks, from scratehes ; he gets a condition powd:r from his druggist, and they get fatter and lazier than ever, but no real benefit is effected.We think that we can give the real reason of this falling off, with its remedy, which is the change from green to dry food that the stock is obliged to uudergo at this season of the year, causing the system to assume an unhealthy condition, which must be at once removed, and this can only be effected by the prompt administration of Dick’s Blood Purifier.In the case of seratches you should wash the with Castile scap and then apply Dick’s Healing Ointment, either of which preparations you can get from any respectable druggist.New Mvertiscments tis jun, PICTURESQUE AMERICA.Subscribers aie cautioned against giving their parts to bind without taking a receipt for same.All receipts for D.Appleton & Co.are signed by W.ALLWORT#H, 1 Bleury street.263 1 EW AND SECOND HAND FURNITURE, BTOVES AND DRY GOODS — 1 shall sell by publie auction, on account of cou- sigrors, at my Sale: -room, 420 Notre ame street, on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9th, at TWO p.m.large variety of New and Second-hand Faraituce, Stoves, and a large variety of Miscellaneous Articles.The whole t0 be sold without reserve.263 2 J.F.RAYMURE, 4netianser BAILIFE S SALE—PROVINCE OF QUEBE®, District of Montreal—No.3¢61— CIRCUIT COURT.—Joseph E.Lareau, Fiaintiff, vs.Magiire Auclalre, Defendant.—On the 16th dav of November, 1877, at Nine of the clock in the forenoon, at Ne 45 St.Paul street, in the City of Moatreal, will be sold by authority of justice, all the goeds and chattels of sald defendant, selz:d in this cause, consisting of Carpet, Table, ete.Terms cash.C.BLU.AMUND, B.S.C.7th November, 1877.L'°T OF AGENCIES for the sale of the STAR: Moatreal, 2681 Quebec.BheErbrOOK6.2000000ncoue nas so00000 M.Sax “ Uppertow J.D.Fraser Fast Sherbrooke.E.Holmes Waterloo .» Lawrence ‘ Cees «ood.O'Regan Granby.Butterworth West Farnha & Sutton Flats Brigham.Frelighsburgh.Dunham.8t.Johns Berthier (e Sorel.Acton Vale Lacolle.q Lennoxville,.Richmond Stat »L.Jutras Bouth Durham Prefontaine St.Andrews.K.Riddle Panville.R.Johnston Rock 1sland.A.A.Barry shee.Wright & Co .KR.Hoiliwell .J.T.Mann X.Drouin & Bro.soncannn ohm chie Marshall & Henry W.H.Young €, James Parks Geo.Bowles 0) C.Perkins OC.P.Swett » Caisse 2.-L.Pope Mra, Varney ug H.Scots MaFarlane Abereorh.«+.B.Beason Adamsvfile.A.C.Dupry St.Hyasinth Ww.| ftanbridge.J.M.Jones Kt.Jeam Chrygostem.R.Stewart Windsor Mills.Wm.M Cete St.Anteine Mrs.Martin Coteau Landin, A.B.Prisur St.Lambert.avies, P M Point Levi, R.Walker BreetBDUBE.RS V.Jone Ontario.Evening Telegrams.The De Broglie Mimisiry Withdraw Their Resignation.Paris, Nov 7.—The De Broglie Minis.trv.at MacMahon’s request, have with trawn ther resicnations.They, however, insist it shall be fully vnderatood this shall in no wise pr judice the President’s sub sejuent decisions.The Catholie Hieracdy of Scetiand.Rome, Nov.7.—It is balieved ‘Jhristmas ie the time fixed for the Pone to issue apos- tolie letters re-establishing the Catholie hierarchy of Scotland.Decline in Consols and Amorican Securities.Loxpox, Nov.7.—A general decline for consols and American securities of 3-16 per cent, occurred yesterday, in consequ>n:s of Cengress pessing the Silver Bill.The State Elections.MILWAUKEE, Wis, Nov, 7.—The chair.rasan of the Republic.n State Central Committee telegraphs :—¢¢I think the State may be safely counted on for five or six thousand majority for the Republican ticket.The vote for the greenback ticket is now estimated at 80,000.NEw York, Nov.7.—Tammany elects three of five Senators from this city.Th» other two Senators are Morrissey aad Goebel, OMAHA, Neb., Nov.7.—The election for Chief-Justice and Regent of the university yesterday, it is claimed, was carried by the Republicans by four or five thousand.NEwanx, N.J., Nov.7.—The latest returns give McClellan 12,500 majority.Senate : 18 Démocrats and 8 Republicans ; Mr, John McDonald was reappointed Auditor.The Chairman read the report for the half-year, ending 1st of October, After the report was read Mr.J.H.Joseph asked what portion of the revenue was derived from tickets sold, and if any passes were issued ?The Chairman—One third is derived from tickets.No passes were issued since the let inst., except to directors.Mr.Joreph thought it was time benevolence was done away with and the full fare charged.The tense of the meeting was in favor of leaving the matter with the directors.Mr.Joseph recommended that extensions sheuld be made oui of recerve.Mr.Bolton asked if the assets were taken at the same figure in the report as they were when the present directors had the valua- ticn made after their accession to office ?The Chairman— Yes.Mr.Edward Murphy moved the reception and adoption of the report.Mr.Murray seconded the motion.Mr.Thomas Caverhill objected, on behalf of himself and his late colleagues, to the adoption of thereport.The valuation that bad been made was false, and Ross’ report referred to was erroneous in its facts and figures.He objected principally to the directors’ recommendation to caneel the new stack, amounting to $600,000 at the time it was proposed to be issued by Mr, Frank Bond on behalf of the Bank of Montreal and City and District Savings Bank he was opposed to its issue, but he was now decidedly opposed to its cancellation, It was intended to carry out the extensions of the lines and he saw no reason for not going on with them.He moved an amendment against adopting the report.Mr.Charles Geddes, sen., seconded the amendment.He remarked that it was not possible for him to be present at the last meeting, but Mr.Caverhill was there however to vimdicate his late colleagues.He (Mr.G.) could not tolerate the report of Mr, Ross but he would take his own time to oppose it.He was not opposed, like Mr.Caverhill, to the new stock being cancelled, but he disagreed with Mr.Caverhill, in thinking it TUL heen an bl wonld AIEROTVE a) The Chairman said The stock had isn issued on improper representations before the shareholders, [+ Mr.J.H.Joseph proposed the reception ofthe report.Mr.Caverhill said it was a question for the shareholders to endorse the valuation made of the assets and hand them over afterwards to the Corporation at that valuation, The Chairman, said as a shareholder, he would not give the property at that valuation.Mr.Caverbill—The compel you, A number of shareholders said no.Mr.McLednan said the eancellation must Le by resolution.Mr.Caverhill would not adopt the report as he did not concur in it.Hop.J.L.Beaudry moved, and Mr.David Lockwood seconded, a resolution authorising the directors to apply to the } rovincial Legislature for power to cancel 1he stock in question, and make such other changes as may be necessary.Mr.Geddes said this was like hurrying the matter through in haste, like the action taken to issue this stock.] The Chairman—It is by po means analogous, as when the motion to issue the stock was brought forward it was sprung upon the shareholders like a mine, whereas it bas been common talk for some time that the course now taken was resolved on.Mr, McLennan said he would vote for reduction prorata in the stock when he would yrobably receive fifty per cent of his stock, which he would be very glad to have re- tuned.Corporation will (To be Continued.) Miss Temple's gentle heart trembled at the thought of a conflict with her strong- minded cousin ; but she resolved to be brave for Laurence Drayton’s sake.¢ They are your relations,” he said ; “and their position demands the most delicate consideration on your part,” he went on, ‘ but their place in your house should be defined distinctly.” Julia acquiesced with him ; but she felt it would be difficult to define Margaret Grantley’s place in the household now.In private as well as in public matters the growth of an abuse may be permitted till custom gives it a certain kind of right as unfair to acknowledge as to destroy.Miss Temple had no reasonable pretext for suddenly resuming the reins of domestic gov- erument after having let them rest so long in her cousin’s hands.¢ I know I have been weak to let ‘things go so far,” she admitted ; ¢ but it seemed to save me such a deal of trouble.Anl you know a few years ago she seamed older to me than she does now.” ss Because every year brings you nearer womanhood.while at Miss Grantley’s age the work of time is not so palpable.Sh» is seven or eight and twenty, I should think.” ¢ Yes, you have guessed exactly.” * And she is a splendid woman, Julis, with a powerful mind, and & fine, imprassive pretence, But she will never beloved throughout the course of her entire life.” Julia Temple lifted her soft eyes to hi face in surprise.“ Why?’ “‘ Such women never are.That is to say, they are never loved as women should be.A man would be proud of her—admire her majestic bearing, her cold, brilliant intellect ; but the passionate tenderness which all women yearn forthe protective, caressive gentlemen like to give to those they love— will never be hers.” : As he spoke, they came upon the subject of their conversation.She was sitting ona seat erected in a sheltered place for ‘the, benefit of those who might require à -rest after climbing the steep range of hills, aad a single flash of her large deeply-set gray eyes made Laurence Drayton think she had.heard him.But her tone was” superbly indifferent when she spoke.¢ Julia, dear, what a long ramble you have had, Eugene and I came out partly to look for you, and partly, I think, because Fugene wanted to play with Brutus.You do not usually forget to take your dog with you, Mr.Drayton.” wo, fear ea bb dante Dim 26 teach him h6 is not always to coms with me, The powerful brute came bounding up with a stick in his mouth, leaping and ogr- vetting with a thorough participation in Eugene's enjoyment of the game ; the master of Brookdale had a schoolbey’s 1eligh for a race up and down the hill.“¢ 80, here you are, old fellow,” he said, coming up the slope nearly out of breath.¢¢ Brutus is capital fun ; he knows me just as well as ever.” «‘ Like his master,”’ said Drayton, ¢ he does not forget his friends.” “ Will you surrender Miss Temple to me, Mr.Drayton ¥’ ‘Certainly, madam, with as much pleasure as is possible.” It was not such a reply as any other gentleman would have made, and Margaret Grantley’s lip curled slightly, She was purely a patrician in nature, and was not without the usual patrician errors.She liked plenty of homage, though she set no value on those who gave it, and the freeand easy journalist piqued her by his careless courtesy of tone, It was ss though he knew the kind of conduct che required, and studiously declined to give it.It wes as though he had said to himself — “You are a woman simply, after all—a very magnificent and clever woman,and you put on lordly airs in a feminine way, and expect a man to lie at your feet,soto speak, as a matter of duty; but to me, my dear Miss Grantley, you are nothing but a splendid stndy—something out of the com- mop, certainly, but still you are only destined for a woman’s fate, and must call soma individual of the masculine gender your lord and master by and by.He scemed to have so measured her character on the first evening of their meeting, when her cutious gray eyes looked him through, to sce what manner of men it was whose coming was waited for with such pleasant expectation.Laurence Drayton and his friend Eugene walked behind the ladies arm in arm, Brutus following soberly now that play was over.*“ How 1-ng have your relatives been with you ¥”’ the journaliet inquired.“They came to the funeral of my poor father, and they have stayed ever since.You were out of Eng’and then, Laurence.” ““Yes, unfortunately.I did not gat your letter till I returned three months agn,and I have been intendirg to come every day till now; but here I am at last, my dear Eugene, end Lere I wean to stay for the next ten weeks.” ¢ For ten years, if you can, Laurence.” “I know, cid fellow, there is plenty of welcome ; but Brookdale is rather an ener- vatirg phe for 8 man whose watchword in this world is werk.Was act this cousin of yours in the civil service 7” ‘He had some appointment, but lost it, T telieve, threugh getting into d:bt, and being reported by his chief.There is not much mercy shown as a rule, and he had been irregular, perhaps ;
