.About Cellars, What is the condition of your gellar? Is it damp, close, filled with disagreeable odors, proceeding from germinating or decaying vegetables? If so, it is high time you gave the matter your earuest attention ; for you have in that locality the germs of disease,.and yourself and family are liable to be prostrated at auy moment. You think your cellar or basement is in good sanitary condition ; do you know that it is?Have you fairly aud carefully examined the.premises?Have you looked over the potatoes, turnips, squashes, and other vegetables, to ascertain their condition? We know that diptheria, typhoid and scarlet fevers, and many other most serious iHuesses, have their origin ic cellars, both in eity and country; and we can do our readers no greater service thao to urge them to see that, at all times, they are in a dry, sweet, wholesome condition. Why should farmers and farmers’ families, living in the counlry, away from pestilential vapors of cities, be so subject to attacks of malignant diseases? There is & reason for it, and we can point it out. They arise from the indifference mavifested to the observance of hygienic rules, aod the violation of sanitary laws.Cleauliuess is essential to health, and is just ae necessary in the country as in the city.A family living over a foul cellar is more liable to be poisoned aud afilicted with illuess thao a city family living io its polluted atmosphere, but without cellar or base- meut filled with fermenting roots and fruits. There is far more sickness iu the country amoug husbandmeu than there ought be.With plenty of pure air, Water, aud exercise, the evil imp, disease, ought to be kept at bay ; and he would be, if « better observance of certain hygienie couditious were main- taived.Bad conditioned cellars, small, close sleeping rooms, stoves,—these are all agouts of evil, and are fast muking the houses of farmers almost as unhealthy ns those of the dwellers in cities. Are not these suggestions worthy of consideration ?—Boslon Journal of Chemistry.Smut in Wheat. In a late number of the Prairie Farmer some inquiry was made as to whether lime is a preventive against smut.My experience tells me that lime of itself would be of litte use were it not combined with the solution of salt.7 will give my method of preventing smut, which has never failed :— Save as much chamber-lye as will thoroughly saturate the quantity of wheat you may wish to sow, then for every ten bushels of whent, add two ounces of arsenic dissolved in rain water, spread the wheat on a level floor, then take a broom aud dip it in the mixture, shaking it over the wheat until there is sufficient to wet the whole.Shovel it over ouce or twice, until you are satisfied that it is all soaked alike, then sift over it a thin coat of tine slaked lime ; shovel over until the lime adheres to all the wheat alike. When it is ready for sowing, should there be occasion to wash the wheat in salt brine for the purpose of cleaning it, the dissolved arsenic my by added to a small quantity of chamber-lye aod applied as above, after the galt brine fins been thoroughly draived.Do uot let the pickled wheat remain in the bags over night.Ihave tried this several times and have found it to accomplish the desired effect in all cases.— M.L, Curtis, in Prairie Farmer, Mice In Orchards.Last fall I made ao inquiry through your valuable paper for some composition that might be applied to youug irnit trees, late in the fall, to prevent mice from gnawing the bark during the winter.A number of preventives were proposed, such us have frequently beeu prescribed by various authors upou fruit growing ; all of which have failed to keep off the mice. But as “ry, try again” is my motto, I would say to all who feel an interest in fruit growing, let us ascertain, if possible, some reme- iy.and make it known by sending it to the Farmer. The damage dove by mice in Maine the past year can hardly be estimated.Millions of yonug fruit wees have been killed, young forest trees injured, and grass damaged very much.Unless something happens to diminish their vumber, I do pot sec how full crops of grain con be raised.1 havo a neighbor who has taken much paius withiv a few years to raise an orchard. He has oue coutuining eix- teon buvdred nice grafted trees, and he thioks he shall be able to save only about five hundred, the rest are killed.1 have three hundred apple trees that havo been set within five years, the must of them are spoiled; also, a pur- sery of about 1wenty thousand, mostly budded, which are spoiled as far as 1 learn digging throngh the snow, which ut this time is some five feet deep.J.3.T.— New England Farmer.Corry 0’Lanus on Boys. Some things may be spid iu favor of boys; some tradea would not live without them.‘The glass-put-iu-men wouldn't have much to do, and putty would be on the decline, if there were no boys to break the windows. There would bo vo customers for the cast-iron peuches and green apples which come carly in the sensoo ; but for the boys, the doctors wouldu't have so much to do in curiug cases of cholera morbus arisiog therefrom, Boys can be useful when they have a mind to, apd can sell pewspapers,.black boots, hold horses, and do chores, Boys individually are better then boys collectively. If there were only one boy in the world I thivk ho would be a good boy ; it geverally takes at least two boys to et up any mischief, Have one boy ina store and you ao make him useful.oo ¥ Hire n secoud boy, and their time will be chiefly devoted to chasing ove another over the connter, and frivg the dust-brush aud directory at each other's heads.A boy tegius lo Le n buisance when 21," p grows out of it depends on oircumstan- ces. Some never do.It is questionable whether boys-lead an enjoyable existence. They make 8 great deal of fuu at other people's expense, but they have most always got grievances. They would like to have their own way a littlgy more, a pretly way it wonld be, : Give a boy a choice of all occupations in life, and chauces are that he would prefer either to be a Robinson Crusoe on a desert island, or a captain of a band of robbers, such as he has read about, and seriously thinks of goiug into one or the other of these desirable pccupations when he gets to be a man.He has a great respect for a stage driver and the captain of a canal boat—there is an idea of çom- mand iv these positions that takes his ideas, His idea of being a man is, having plenty of money, doing what you please, and being able to smoke or chew tobacco without getting sick over Somebody wrote a song.“Would 1 were a boy again.” Those who had the bringing up of him are not likely to have the same sentiment.Raising a boy ouce is as much ns anybody wants to undergo, aud fortuvately, when they once grow up they stay growed up, aud have children of their own to afflict them.Crover AND Tivorny.-—-A.Hadley, in a communication to the Northwestern Farmer, gives, what he regards three important reasons why clover should always be grown with Timothy.First, the clover being tap-raoted penetrates deeply, stands drouth, mollows the soil, and the Timothy grows much stronger and holds up the clover.Secondly, it sown for pasturage, the Timothy almost uviversally prevents the clover from swelliug cattle.Thirdly, hay is too binding, especially for cattle, and clover too washy, (succulent), hence, both together are betier than either alone. To these, the Country Gentleman adds under the head of the first, that where grass comes in a rotation, it is of the utmost importance ou u clay soil, that at least a part of this grass crop be clover. It will serve to mellow and loosen the heavy Bil jn a remarkable degree, so that when turned over with a plow, it will not only be rich, but loose aud friuble.IF, ou the vther hand, Timothy alone is sown, (which some do because lay sells better), the sod will turn over heavy aud clammy, aud be unfit for any crop which is to follow. The same corres- poudent says that he is partial to rye for calf or sheep pasture, which he occasionally sows iu the summer or autumn, after a crop of corn ; and then, after pastusel it is tuined under for a spriug crop—cornu, if the soil be strong enough—or it may be allowed to go to harvest.Wirrive Oxen.—1It is a cruel and generally useless act of barbarism to whip oxen; yet many farmers are in the habit of continually keeping the whip going when teaming their cattle.Instead of inviting the avimals to exertion by proper words, the first intimation the poor creatures bave from their muster that he desires them to start, is a cut of the whip or a prick from the goad. This is vot only savage, but absolutely wicked, und wholly unueces- sary.Another practice often seen is that of pounding and thrashing the ox- eo because they don’t readily back a load, when they have not been learned to back an empty cart down hill, 1 have no doubt that the selling value of of many & yoke of oxen is depreciated irom twenty-five to seventy-five dollars, Ly beiug abused in this way.If ani- als are desired to work, they must first be taught to work, and when they understand what is wanted of them they will cheerfully comply. But there is n better way to communicate your desires 10 them thao through the whip.Kindness and skillul management is far better.Remember that “a merciful mau is merciful to his beast.”— The People, SnArreinG Epoev Toors.—The Mark Laue Express copies the following receipe for sharpening edged tools from n German scientific journal, for the benefit of farmers, mechanics and laborers. It has long been kuown that the aimplest method of sharpening à razor is to put it for half an hour in water to which has been added vne twentieth of weight of muriatic or sulphuric acid, then lightly wipe it off, and aiter a few hours set it on a hove. The acid bere supplies the place of a whetstove by corroding the whole surface evenly, so that nothing further thas a smooth polish is necessary. The proces never-io- jures good blades, while badly hardened ones are generally improved by it, although the cause of improvemeut re- maivs unexplained. At length this process has been applied to many other cutting implements. The workman, at the begiouiug of his noou spell, or wheu he leaves it in the evening, moistens the blades of histools with water acidulated as above, the cost of which is almost nothing.‘This aaves the consumption of time and labor in whetting.” Porarors.—This crop deserves better culture than it usually gets, and also, perhaps, somewhat earlier planting. To an article on the “Relative Cost of Root Crops,” we gave the practical experience of a Quebec farmer in grow- iag this crop, showing that, with care- fuŸ culture, large retyrns can be depended dpon.We are oot among those who imagine that successin growing this étôp is only to be bad by thosé who invest largely io some new and costly variety. In fact, we thick none of these high-priced new varieties will ever bécome ds Feat favorites for the table ‘hs “seme o Wi would bot desire a better potato for late summer gtd early wioter use than Vhe Scotch Kidnèy or Pivk-eye, nor for late winter 4nd spriog use than the Peach- blow ; but it is always safe to use ashes ic connection with other’ manures. If ashes only are used, there ate fower weeds, as no seed can be introduced by the manure.A goutlemao of Brooklin, Mass., informs us that a neighbor of his, Mr.E.F.Bacon, has n coarse wool sheep that dropped a lamb February 20, and on the 13th of March, another lamb, both of which sbe owus, and is apparently proud of, as both are likely, thriving lambs. The Hearth and Home says: Io feeding farm avimele, remember that when you place food before an animal, it is enton for three purposes ; to give muscular strength, to suply heat, or make fut or butter. The more a cow consumes to supply muscular waste, the less goes to milk. The more she needs to keep herself warm, the less she can yield of milk or of flesh.Coarse, rough food, as swamp hay, butts of coru- stalks, and straw yield some starch or carbon. This ig the reason why an an- imul in an open shed will eut trash which it would reject iv a warm stable.Yet there is nothing gained by starving them to rough fodder.Good shelter would be cheaper.Tho richer the food in albumen, the more vigor nad muscle it will make.‘The farmer gains more by a few high-fed animals than from much half-starved ill-housed stock.0e.A Frame Building 22 Miles In Length.Persons who pass hastily over the Uuniou Pacific Ruilroad hardly give a thought to the immense amount of work which has been performed by the Compauy. From the Sacrameuta Lo the preseut terminus of the road, at Elko, the traius are once more running regularly. The immecuse amount of money and labor expended in cutting through mountaius, opening tunnels, grading the roud and laying the track can with difficulty be realized by those not familiar with {he business. Not the least of the problems to be solved was that of protecting the track from the heavy falls of snow which were to ba auticipated during the winter months. To obviate this difficulty as far as possible, the Company determined to erect a series of sheds, or rather oue building, which should protect the road over the snow line.Accordingly, they have erected o building which is doubtless the larzest in the world. It is twenty-two miles in loogth, sixtceu fact in width and sixteen feet 12 height, not including the pitch of tho roof.It is put up in the most substantial manner, all the timbers used being of the best quality to be obtained. The sides are inclosed, and were it uot fur the fact that daylighi peuetrates through the interstices between the boards, the whole affair would be very like à hnge tunnel. The building is braced together iu a most peculiar mauner, aud is,iu addition, firmly bolted to the rocks wherever the road nears the faco of a cliff.Where snow slides are to be feared, no extension of the roof has been carried to the cliffs, so that falling masses shall pass over the building and lodge on the other side.In many pluces, where side tracks are located, the building is wider than the fizures given above.More thun 40,000,000 feet of lumber have been used in its construction. It covers an areca of more than 1,800,000 square feet, or nearly forty-four acres.Of the best proots of the stabilty of the structure is in the fact that, with the exception of a few miles which had not been ronlly completed, it thoroughly answei« ed the purpose for which it was designed during the recent severe storm, in which it was subjected to the most severe tests.— San Francisco Alta-Cali- fornian.Snarr BarGarns.—Do not slander the merchant, I think it is the front part of the counter that corrup’sthe hack part. Now nod then, in the mercantile business, just as iv any other relation, there are men who iucline to fraud, to guile; Sir John Colborne, now commanding in Montreal, determined to attack this formidable array. Two expeditions were set outy=—ove under Col.Weth- erell, by the way of Chambly ; the other vader Col.Gore, by the way of Sorel,—to secure the capture of leading meu, by no attack on both sides, Ou the afternoon of Wedaesday, the 220d November, Col.Gore left Montreal with two companies of (he T'weu- ty-fourth Regiment, and one company of the Thirty-second (Markhnm's).and a small party of volusleer cavalry.with one howitzer 1Z-pouuder, ‘Two companies f the Sixty-sixth joined them ut Sorel.LiL ten o'clock at night the march commenced for St, Denis, eighteen miles. It was rainivg heavily nud the road was kneo deep nlmost in soft mud ; towards morning it commenced freezing, and a #oow-storm faced the troops.Cold aud exhausted they struggled on, Markhain’s company leading, picking their way, asthey best conld, expecting to breakfast at 51 Denia, without opposition. The first files had uearly outered the village, when fire opened upon them, The howitzer, vulimbered at 250 yards, opened fire in return; but the troops, tuking shelter round barus and houses, were too benumbed to handle their muskets, Markham, sheltered behind a long barn, twice rushed out to lead an assault, and each time received a musket wouud, the last one very seri- oue.Firing continued for a fel hours chiefly from the howitzer, and then the troops retreated to Sorel, leaviog the guu behiod as a trophy for the ‘patriots.” Such was the relation made to me by some wounded men, wlo were left prisoners, and it corresponds with the official report.Had a dash been made iuto the village, in the morning, the troops would have easily carried it.Had the “patriots” followed the exhausted retreating troops, iu the afternoon, possibly all would have been captured ; but neither knew the weakness of the other.Wulfred Nelson, one of the bravest of the brave, commanded at St.Denis.He had uot raised ihe standard of revolt, but only defended Limself against an illegal warrant, In war he would have been a great General ; but perhaps, a Murat, greater in action than in douu- cil, He had for defence ouly about fifty fowling pieces of any use’; a small embaokmedt across the road was a ‘protection to sharpshaotefs and the’ stronghold waa a stolit Stone house, at the lower end of the village, Round- shot knotked is the upper ‘ guble,— there were three killed id the gatret; below the rafters,’ the Wally wore tdd solid for injury. My ‘mbit’ Jotimate for’ defence at St.Denis, friend, Charles Ovide Perrault, who W NV HOLE No ; 1217: Le , Ep we gd had been one of the moat effeptit agents of agitation, and ‘the mt young man I ever met, was mortally’ wounded, while crossing tho street, by: an acgldental parting shot,” … t: One painful ovont marked th de: … Liout.Voir, “of the as Re eut, loft Sorel to avertako' Col: Bard's i maud: Acoidontally gotiing: Upon “a wrong road, he drove past, -qud on:'to: St.Dovis, whore ho was made priapuar, us wns early informed 8; from Nolson, wha said id ik ue treated with covery coosidèration!== When the troops approached ifn the morning, ho was placed in s waggon to be sont to me, at St.Charles (nine milos), in charge of two old, rospecté- ble meu.At a short distance, ho jumpod ont to cscapo ; aud, in the souf- flo to scours him, was killed. No man lumented (ho sud event more thau Nolson.a ages À ‘I'he troops lost, —killed, 6 rank and fils!
