Church! to a very iarge congregution.Mr.Silcox said, when introdurinz the doctor: “I am very glad to welcome to aur church our brother, wha comes to us tn speak to us of things of vital importance. There is a movement on foot, humanity is feeling the touch of God, it is seeking to rise, to tind out what the true meaning of Christianity is.There is a desire to sec a better pool of the King: Cora of Christ than has vet bepn seen. Some are looking for it in une way, others in another, We welcome our brother in the name of Christ, in the name of those who have toiled and been oppressed, who, as George Macdonald says, are erying oui from all over the world: ‘Lift me up! Lift me up!” Dir.Herron's delivery was clear_and easy.and the serinon an unusually strong - and impressive one."Hig subject was “The Christianity for to-day.” The text was taken {rym the seventeenth chapter of St.John's Gospel, fourth verse: “I have glori- tied Thee on the carth: I have accomplished the work which Thou gavest me to do.” Ur.Herron said that Jesus lived the only complete human life ever lived upoh this | earth: He came into the world not as the founder of a new religion, not to establish a new mode of worship, but as a revelation of what our human life really is.If we were toundenstand what Christian life was, we must understand through the interpretation of the iife of Christ. If we should measure ihe life of Christ by our common notions of failere and success, both social and religious, it would prave 10 have been a pitiable failure - from beginning to end.The conservators of his own religion characterized him as a falsifler, He divided households; drove people away from their relizious texchers, and rathlessiy beat down the of- thodoxy of His dev.He built no temples, and made no creeds, He taught no system of theology: no system of work; His life was spent amongst the por and the needy, and € expressed larger hopes for the vile and ignorant than for the strictest observers of religious rites.Ho was denied and forsaken even by His own apostles, sold by the city over which lie lind wept with the anguish of a divine love, and Was at last put to death by the Romaus.So.when He came from the tomb tocall and commission His disciples, Who were few in namber, He | plainiy told them that their mission.would_‘ , render them i SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS OUTCASTS.The will of their Lord would bring them into conflict with the will of the world.csusing them to be hated by all men and rsecuted by all institutions. The will of God and the will of the world was an n- istic: the world would give power, God would give character. The temptation to make His life a fultilment of the will of God and the will of the world was the temptation which Jesus met in the wilderness but Christ saw that either He must fail before the face of the world, or the will of God in man must fail.Christ breasted with the currents of human life; He lived amongst its temptations and its sormws, yet the life of Christ was the most jovous amongst meu.We think of Him as “The Man of Sorrows,” and yet His life was.the only pertectly Joyous life on the earth, the only ‘lite ever ruled by the peace of God.*“The ordinary idea of Christianity, Christianity as commonly lived, an attractive, sel- fixh Christianity, Christianity as we-under- stand it, is not the txue Christian's ideal.It.is a state of life abhorrent to the Gospel. It would, if realized properly, make of every man a social monster.e selfish life of selfish satisfaction is the one that Christ supremely condemned. He who could be content to reap the benefits of that sacrifice of Jesux; he who could le content to receive Heaven through that sacrifice: he who could ha content to be enriched by the Cross; by the wealth of the sacrifice of the centuries, and not give his life to bread and meat to the world: he who could be content to reap the wealth of all moral suffering from the past without making his life an entire sacrifice to the world, without entering into its sins and bearing them away; he who could be so content would be the most infamous and lost of devils, however devout his sentiments, however correct his creeds. The life that seeks sim- ly to get the benefits «of Calvary is the one that is shameless and is the very negation of Christianity. The cross of emption is ouws, and no man knows what that crcss means until his will has been strengthened upon it in the renunciation of himself, in the redemption of the world. He who avoids bearing the burden of his brother's weakness and escapes suffering from the sins of others, HAS COMMITTED NORAL SUICIDE Our crosses are our glory. Now, [know that Christ's ideal of life, based as it is upon the principle of the Cross, accepting the Cross as the law of itsfaithand actions, is not in harmony with'our modern notions of success, it does not accord with our modern systems of business, it is not agreeable to society, a - Led éd Sm Sa te Ne Vz Ne 4 of {10 cent Cigars.>t rg ie .4 | Ne Ne Ne Nl 99 PE wc ats each.Superior to the majority AND BE CONVINCED! OSTRACIZED BY ALL tue reputable sections of society.nnd wonld doubtless have felt ill at eane sitting in the “gilded chamber” among his peers.A marked trait in Lord Savernake's character was his love of music halls, and “Ducks,” as his boon companions used familiarly to call him, was thoroughly at home behind the scenes in all the London variety houses. He former! an attachment for Dolly Tester, one of theleading lights of the chorus at the Alhambra and well known also as a singer and coryphée on the beards of a Brighton theatre, “Dolly” knew how to Play | er cards well, and one day in 1 Lord Savernake married her and took h home to “The Hatch,” his place ne Windsor. The bride is described ‘in t Peerage as “Dorothy Julia, eldest daugh of Thomas Haseiy, of Brighton.” Her fathi kept a store in the suburbs of-that fashiof}- able watering place. She is reported have said to him: ‘‘’l’here is but one'door my boudoir—the church door.” After th Marquis éame into the property they made the money go very rapidly.Since 1886 he and she have spent ail the rents, have had tn ««}l Jervaulx Abbey to Sir Cunliffe-Lister for ¥2,350,000.and tried to sell Savernake Forest for $3,750,000 to ford Iveagb. When HIS CREDITORS CAME DOWN upon Lim in Dedmber, 1892, the liabilities wore £345,482, and there was a deficiency of £244,211, of which no account could be wade. The union did not result in perfect happiness, and five years later recourse was had to the divorce court to procure a separation. The corespondents named in the suis were Mr.“Abington,” of racing fame, and Captain Riley, of the Tenth Hussars, A great esclandre was expected and London society”) was on the tiptoe of horrified anticipatio when suddenly it was anpounced that t suit was withdrawn and that an amica settlement had been arrived at, It x raid at the time that the sight of the wea!t accumulated by Lolly during the p-ricd_o their separation, which she had passtd"on the continent, had induce:l thé i:gured bns- band to “forget and fopgite.” However that may have been, a réconciliation took place and was celabrmted hy a rousing dinner at the Café Royal.Subsequently Lord Ailesbury left his wife and associated with another music hall singer who is well known both in Landon and New York.In 1886, on the death of his grandfather, Lord Savernake became Marquis of Ailes- bury.In the following year the scandal occurred which caused the newly-made Marquis to be WARNED OFF TEX TURF - while you wait, and at a minimum cÉcast .On the canal bank of the Wellington Basin is a discharging ap-.poratus which has cost the Dominion Coal’ mpany over $60,000, but by which they expect to save some thousands yearly, The structure is called a coal.pocket, a wooden receiver sonie 00 feet long, 30 feet wide and 110 feet high.Into this pocket can be put U0 tons.of coal.Four travelling towers, operated, by engines, are on to of the pocket. These: towers are pl opposite the hatched of a vessel and the coal is brought up by clamp ps which are lowered intothe hold of the vessel. The coal is dumped into the pocket, underneath which coal carts are driven, while a track rmits cars to be run right alongside.y means of chutes tire cars and carts: CAN BE LOADED IN A FEW MINUTES, while by the new mathod a twenty-five hund ton steamer cau be discharged in ten hours. There are seventy-six of these chutes altogether; thirty-eight underneath and thirty-eight on the side of the ket.The weight of the travelling towers s thirty tons each, the engines and gear alone weighing fiftcen tous each. There nre eight engines in the four towers.while there is iv power house of 160 horse power, -and two boilers of 30 horse power each; - In t the engines are not shown, hut they will be placed on the towers and housed in.In the erection of the pocket itself 750,006 feet of jeorgia pine were used, Ww thirty tons of rsa in the shapa of bolts and castings wet:t into the worl shovels, w, weight pounds, work autamatically, and bring up two thousand pounds of coal at every lift. The towers are propelled by.their own steam power.Where the innovation will nwest seriously affect the workingmen is in the much re duced number of haxyls uired to discharge a steamer.Wjat it men todo before nik men ean do now.The Dominion ‘Coal’ pany, will engage their own men this year and not place the work in the bands of stevedores, as heretofore. There will be two gangs, and the work will go on during the entire twenty- four hours. While these eis have en in use in several of te large American cities, the one in Montraal is said to be the 1 st and most improved ever erected. In Boston, where the Company have operat- ese poskets, the cost of discharging coal amounted last year to only 34 cents a ton.It is hoped to do it here for at most 5 cents, while it is calculated that discharging has heretofore cost at least 17 cents per ton.- Another saving is-in the breakage of the coal in handling, this being re- the accompanying duced to a minimum by the néw system. When everything is ready there will be car tricks both along: side and underneath the pocket, and two trains of eight cars each can be loaded together in twenty ntinutes.Mr.John Murray, of Montreal, had the contract for the erection of the pocket itself, Mr.À.R.Hooper, of Boston, made the travelling- towers, while W.A.Crook Bros.& Co., © New York.put in the engines and machinery. It is understood that the Dominion Coal Company propose to bring in overa million tons of coal this year. The Philharmonic Concerts. To the Editor of the STAR : S1R,—That the committee of the Phithar- monic Society struck a popular chord when ving Dutchman” for one of their festival concerts is evidenced by the rapid sale of seats which has been going on duripg the week. The committee did not undertake this great work “without considerable discussion, but when they finally decided upon it,it was with the full détermination to render justice to it.Lor this purpose 2 magnificent orchestra and except.onaliy tine soloists have beeti engaged. But in their eagerness to hear thig concert, the public generally appear to have forgutten that it is but one of a series, and that other works of * great nerit are to be Jerformed durlug the week.To prepare and perform the “Fiying Dutchman” alone in such a manner as it is proposed to give it ou Thursday next would involve an expenditure o! at.least twenty- five hundred dollars, utmost that can be made from it if every seat is sold will be fifteen hundred dollars, it will be seen that the publie become debtors for a large sum to the iety.‘lo offset this they are invited to patronize the other concerts equally as well as the Wazner performance."Ëhe programme of ¢ach concert has been selected and prepared with the utmost care, and every number to be performed is fuil of interest. The orchestra will be the same at all, and though the “Dutchman” calls for more vocal soloists than do the other works, additional interest is lent to the Mendelssohn-Lisat and - matinee concerts by the exceptionally fine orchest compositiëns, and Ly the engacement of two eminent instrumental soloists, Arthor Friedheim.ianisf, and Frite Gicse, violoncellist.Fortunately the Society derives a considerable revenue from chorus fees and other sources, otherwise such expensive concerts could not be attempted in such a small hall as the Windsor.lor seventeen years past the committee have cheerfully met annual deficits of from $250 to $600, aud they will continue to do so if necessary. Those who are enabled to hear the “Flying Dutchman” will feel that they are indebted to the Society for a à perlormance, and if they attend the Grieg and Mendelssohn-Liszt nights their impressions o! these conterts will not be less pieasant.Excellent sents for these concerts are atill unanpropriated.Imt it is sinoerely tô he hoped that they wil all be absorbed'brfore tt-ey take pince, + : A.Browsing, - That the effect of the specific duty can be understood only by those who havea thorough knowledge of the business affected, and hence that it lends itself to-decep- tion and masked extortion. It is not hard’ to guess which of these scts of reasons will influence the great consuming classes.} THE FUTURE OF THE FARM, Will tho notorious “‘bonanza farm,” with’ its hundred-armed steam machinery and its company of transient toilers, eventually gobble üp the small farmer who plants his | home in the middle of one or two hundred acres and founds a centro of good citizen- shipand wholesome industry? This is a very antious question in many a farm house today.Aathe prica of wheat has fallen and fallen, thé farmer has naturally thought of himsolf as getting decidedly the worse of the competition with the gian®.{arma of the west; and has looked for some relict fo a tariff reform that should lessenthe taxation.or his purchases.Undoubtedly “‘bonanax" farming has had its effect in increasing the world's yield of wheat; and if development In this line is unlimited, the small farmer has real reason {or anxiety.A cheery writer in the Forum, however, Mr.E.V.Smalley, takes quite a different view of the future.Admitting to the full the effect that machinery has had in replacing human labor on the farm he contends that little more can be looked for in this direction, and that the coming higher price of land must wake “bonanza” farming comparatively unprofitable. His estimate of the effect of machinery is that “the farmer of our day with the help of machinery exerts a productive force equal to that 6f three men in the days of his grandfather.” This ie based upon a careful con- _.nideration of the effect of the various Ime tha ; plements now In use, and Is confessodly “moderate,” “Bonanza” wheet farms, be thinks, are due, however, not to the influence of farm machinery, but to transient conditions that made the securing of large areas of land easy. But these conditions are not now prevaleat—in the United.States, at any rate—and other circumstances, too, have changed. He says: .Th land have changed the whole aspect of large farming. There ia no bonanza in the big farn naw; it makes but a moderate profit on tha capital it ropresents in average Crop yoars, and with a bad crop it barely pays runaing expensos. It requires As careful mauageinent as a tactory.it has its coonomies and its attractions and it will survive for many years: but ftsepoch has passed, Many of the big farme in the valley of the Red River of tho North, where they are tmost numer- ous-aud are operated to the best advantage, are “being steadily reduced by sales to small farmers.' Theo innds now brin; from: fifteen to tweniy- five dollars an acre, avd the desire to realize the large profit ou the original iuvestinont, as weil an the experience of short Crop years.combine to make the owners glad to reduce their holdings.4., Then capital is not being invested in these large farms, he points out; and he looksto the growing pressure of population to both increase the price of land and the earnings of the smaller farmer. It may be that his hope for the future is biassed by his evident feeling in favor of the small farm.He regards the influence of the large farm: with itspumimer population of drifting laborers and its winter desolation, ac ‘‘unquestionably déplorable,” and wants to see in the west the farm communities of the east.It is not certain, howaver, that the Jarge farm ‘men who will live, sky, ina village community in the centre of it.Thero is no reason why, if a certain large area is farmed.by à system requiring fewer en than if divided into individuel farms, these fewer workers should not live wholly off the profits of farming, just as the larger number of indiyidual farmers would. This would keep the whole staff of the farm on the land, and create a “bonanza farm” very diffa-ent from the present monstrosity.THose fewer men could live Letter ‘on cheaper wheat, and cheap wheat would mean cheap bread for the city laborer. One thing is certain. The advanez.of machinery should increase the leisure of the farmer — should ercate leisure for him, might be a better way o! putting it—and thus give hin: mor2 time for reading and other pleasures of the leisure hour.It is sometimes contended that the farmer of the past generation was a brighter man with his multiplicity of duties than his xue-.cessor is to-day.Then, says Mr.Smalley, “he made his own axe-helves, plough- handles and flails, split fence-rails and built fences, did a little carpentry, cobbling and blacksmithing, and sharpened his wits by many makeshifts and contrivances; and his wife carried on =a little factory in the house, where wool was spun, dyed and woven, clothing was made, and fruits were bought at the stores and all the little farm arts and handicrafts have departed from the rural districts.” Bat now, too, the killing work is dono by machinery; and, as Mr.Smalley says, ‘instead of spending the evening shelling corn by the light of a tallow candle, the farmer now reads the [ riéwspapers in the glow of a kerosena lamp, and his wife, released from the drudgery of spinning and knitting.will be found rezd- ing a novel or a magazine.” Father Time has clearly brought blessings in his train for the farmer, as well as the last new destroying insect and the anti-tariff reformer Justin McCarthy on the New Ministry.Loxpox, April 18.—Justin McCarthy addressed a larce meeting in.London last evening under the Juepl ‘es of the St.Pan- cras branch of the National Liberal Associn- tion.He said: “Immed‘ately after Mr.Gladstone resigned I was especially sur- moued to meet him to discuss the prospects of home rule.Mr.Gladston: had then and has still absolute confidence that the gentlemen who constitute the present Cabinet are faithful to the Hoñe Rule cause.” My.McCarthy said the Irish now had on their side a ministry as strong as any previous one of the game aze, not even.excepting ministries led by Mr.Gladstone.Even if the Lidecel Party should lose control of the Government the Irish would have the democracy of England, Scotland and Whales behind them and the cause would be safe. They must ultimately win.In any casc ihe Irish held the Government of England in the hollow of their hands.Mr.McCariby deprecated public discussion of party differences. The majority must govern, he said.On all questions of principle, he added, the party was still united.Coxey Deposes the Great Unknown.CUMBERLAND, Md., April 16.—Some tron- ble arose here in the Coxey Army between “the Unknown" and Marshall Brown.1t all arose over conflicting orders given during the march. The “Unknown” wished to make frequent halts in qrder that he might harangue the crowd gathered to see the army.Brown and the men wished to push on to the camp. When the “Un- nown” ordered na halt the Marshall ordered march, The “Unknown” had hls way for one day, but when Coxey arrived he reinstated Marshall Brown and ordered the “Unknown” to leave camp. The commissary w ns remained with Coxey, and the men followed the w ns and pushed on near the Federal capital.Bostox, April 16—Boston's Industrial army, after exhausting every scheme for securing free transportation, has concluded to walk the entire digtance to Washington. It is now believed that over 1000 men will be in line when the New England contingent starts, The Great Northern Rallway Strike.ST.Par, April 186.—The Great Northern & Montaus Central Railway, from the Red River north to Spokane, Wash., was at a complete standstill Sesterday.Brief despatches from North Dakota points indicate that the men are quiet but determined: The St.Paul branch of the American Railway Union held a meeting, which was addressed bg Debs and about 50 others, No strike was ordered, but the men expressed their sympathy with the men west of Grand Forks.and said they were ready to strike at any moment, if by so doing they could aid their brothers to the West.was develo yesterday that there is a big row on between .the American Railway Union and the various railway brotherhoods.Condition of the French Coast Defences.PARIS, April 16.—M.Lockroy, who was sent to Toulon by the Naval Commission of Enqu to examine the fortifications there, made his report, While the honest and loyalty of the staff were above suspi- clon, he said it was undeniable that the administration was inefficient. The greatest disorder prevailed in every department Mr.Lockroy saïd that the big 10,000 ton warship ‘“Magente,” which was but recently oompleted, was virtually worthless.“Parisian” Had a Rough Passage.HALIFAX, April 16—The Allan liner “Parisian,” due here Friday night from Portland, Me., only reached here yesterday morning, having encountered heavy weather in crossing the Bay of Fundy, far worse she experienced on her tri across the Atlantic. The gale commences on Thursday night, and continued with great f all Friday.A tremendpus sea ‘was running, Many Waves swept the decks, several going clean over the bridges. An Anarchist Neat Discovered.LoxnoN, À 16 —Inspeotor Melville rested Francis Pol.‘an Italian AnnrsBiet, in Farringdon Road, London.Polti was carrying a inch cast iron shell.Inspector Melville ed to Polti's lodgings in Clerkenwell. There he found several fare retorts filled with sulphuric acid, chlorate of potash and other micals used in the manufacture explosives.Much Anar + chistie literature in Italian rooms aa vas found in | © low price of wheat and the higher price af 3 is un bad thing, if owned and worked by .dried and preserved. Now evervthing is.-] were oo .THE MONTREAL DAILY STAR MONDAY APRIL 16 1894, CANADA'S FISHERIES.REPORT ON THER CONDITION "FROM ALL OVER.One Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars Increase in Value-Mack- ers! the principal lum- Ontario inds of fish caught being: Pounds.Herring.81,000,000 Whitefish.52,000,000 Salmon-trout.50,000,000 THE TOTAL CATCH OF THE CANADIAN FISHERIES for the calendar pour 1208 is valued at £90,8:0,606, subdivided as follows: Nova Scotia 98,407,379 New Brunswick * 3,746,121 British Columbis 4,443,903 Quebec 2.218.908 rio , 1,004,930 ’rince Edward Island Tha Manitoba and North-West Territories 1,043,083 These figures do not comprise the quanti- y of fish consumed by the Indians of British Columbia, which is estimated'at about 83,000,000.The total value thus shows an increase of $1,500,000 over 1802, ‘This large increase is entirely due to the.enormous catch of salmon in British Columbia. It must be remarked, however, that there was a decrease in the output of the British Columbia canneries in 1892, from the previous year, a 2.000.000 NT Ontario oo the largest falling off in namely, 7, 000, but this is more than made up by the increase of over 500,000 in New Brunswick. The yield in the other provinces differs but slightly from the previous year. The men en, d in fishing in Canada number 67,753, and the fishing gear represents a capital of ,081,557, perinanently invested.- There are 1104 fish vessels of 40,006 tons in the aggregate.eso vessels are manned sailors, Other fishermen number 58, who nse31,508 boats and 5,406,800 fathoms rill-nets and seines. These nets are valued at 1,637,707, and to this must be added other fishing ear, such as pound and trap nets, weirs, € The lobater plant alone represents a value of 81.345.504, consisting of 682 lobster canneries, along the coasts of the Maritime Provinces, using eae traps, otc.‘More than 100 vessels and 1 boats, employing over 3000 more men, were employed than last year, thus showing an increase of capital invested of $1 © following table shows the relative value of the principal kinds of commercial fishes as well as the Increase or decrease of » - .Kinds of Fish.Amount Increase Docrease : 160 a over 1808.from 188, Cod $4.08, —_— 010 Salmon 3,890, 91.647.797 Joe Lobsters bpd “0270: Menton 1,208,768 ————— Hom Mackerel 1,008,006 ——— 300011 Seals 874,842 MR —_— Trout ee —— 38,408 Haddock ——— 160,204 Smeîte 414,174 1786 — ——— Hake ——— 9,508 Poilock 241,581 19600 —— 18.018 0805 —.Halibut —_— as plevives uv HB —_—_ 8 anal na T= 14005 uebec” On the coast of Labrador cod | “1 without promotion his im Oynters 15,410 11,49 heis “_ MA799 —_— Sturgeon 105,785 15,388 eee Daas 79,201 0,888 ——— Shad .71.076 22,816 Tom.cod or frost - 5] 77.0:0 22,70 Clams ass 50,094 Squid LT4 4,563 THE MOST STRIKING FLUCTUATION ix the extraordinary increase of over a million and a hall of dollars in the salmon yield of British Columbia where the unprecedented pack of overtwenty-hine million 1- Ih cans is reported. This value would be still higher had not the prices of last year heen considerably reduced. The sealing industry fared better than last year, showin, au increase in vaive of nearly a quarter o a million of dollars. The British Columbia feet captured about 21,000 fur-seals more than in 1892.Smelts also show the large increased value of $178,000 over that of the receding year.Thix increase was in New Pranswick, where the smelt industry is most extensively carried on, and where the catch of 1883 reached «even iniltion pounds, being nearly double that of the previous reason.Thesardine industry, showing an improvement to the extent of $100,000,ia also to be credited to New Brunswick.Notwithstanding the enormous drain of the st fifteen years on the lobster supply, an [herease of nearly half 3 milion dollars is returned over the valae of 1892, This increase is general in all the Maritime Provinces, but it is more noticeable in Nova.Scotia.About 88,000,000 of these cruatace- aus were captured this season to fill the 13,674,713 cans, besidea the 7347 tons shipped fresh or alive. The catch of mackerel, which in 1802 showed a decrease of over half a million dollars, has this year shown a further decline of a quarter of a million dollars. This shortage is general in all the Maritime Provinces; the Magdalen Islands being the only locality showing an increase.‘Che other sea fish which show a considerable diminution are.herring, haddock ‘and halibut.fish show a decrease In value of $200,000 as compared with the catch of the previous vear.Thisis due toa smaller catch in Ontario waters, which rielded over a million lbs, less than in 18%.In Manitoba and the North-West Territories the catch of whitefish was about.the same ns last year, namely 135,500,000 The la ecrease noticed in trout was owing toa smaller: catch in Ontario alone, where salmon-trout yielded half a million lbs.less than.in the preceding year. The ingréase or decrease of the other principal kinds of fish are not sufficiently warked to be “specially noticed. The quantity of tish oij obtained is nearly as large as Inst year, being 401,890 gallons, valued at $321,927.Tho value of fish used for bait war nearly $300,000, THE WAR IS OVER.Mello Surrenders and the Brazillan Rebellion Ends.MONTEVIDEO, April 16.—Admiral Mello and the 130 insurgent t who disembarked on the frontier of Uruguay, after having been driven out of the state of Rio Grande do Sul by the troops of President Peixoto, have surrendered to the Uruguayan authorities and the rebellion in Brasil may Le said to have completely collapsed.e authorities of Uruguay have disarmed the Brazilian insurgen ‘ MONTEVIDEO, April 16.—The Urugua ran Government, after having been not by Mello of his desire to surrender, sent out a battalion of infantry to receive his submission. The commanding officer after conferring with Mello, accepted his sword and pk him-and his followersformally under arrest.Mello landed his men from the ‘Republica.AN ANGRY LAW CLERK.[sPECIAL TO THE STAR.) Was it not that in the face of the advice of his nobles and advisers, he freed 21,000,000 of his o pressed subjects, transformed them from the position of chnt- tels to the dignity of man?And so with the spiritual kingdom. The glory of the second temple was to be ‘greater than the first, and we felt that, after Bethlehem aud Gethsemane, Calvary ‘and Olivet, the earth could never be a wilderness Sain.God wd glorified the place of His feet a rep tion to a greater or loss extent of Le Pentecostal scene, wherever [lis people have met, and by the heroic spirit which Re has embodied in His followers, 'khe ma + jrs of Madagascar were an illustration of this, and to-day we had seen the native negro boys of Uganda so low down in the human scale as to be consi LOWER THAN THE BEASTS, who, when burned at the stake, proclaimed raises to God, until their tongues crackled by the heat al rendered speech impossible. And 50 also with the martyrs in the Roman arena. He believed God would do the same to-day and in the future as in the past.We were to have one incarnation, but we were to have many Pentecosts—even the Apos- ~tolfc age might be revived again if there were any need.[he first Pentecost might be far transcended in its power of blessing.Again, God would glorify the place of our feet by bringing i in a higher form of morality than we_had yet attained. The des, ism of ancient times had disappeared, s va - ery had passed away from every Christian tand and even from such dark and ben night.ed countries as Russia and Brazil; duelling had disap d in the face of the power of the vince of Peace, and -cution was fast disappearing, the highest dignitaries of institutions which formerly practised it now discountenancing it.But, in spite of all that had been ac- com ed during the last eighteen hundred years, there were some things which they had not been able to purge as yet.still had intemperance, blasphemy, sambling and corruption. Then how many doubtf means there were of getting rich! What uncharitable, what mean things, many professing Christians did! In conclusion, Prof.Ross ho that God would grant them a spirit of humble self-sacrifice in their work in this new church. Some might think, when they felt the burden of res; naibility, that it would be a very tine thing if some wealthy man would extinguish their debt, but he was not so sure.It was.not the best thing for a Christian man to make his duty easy, just as it was not the best thing to make the way of education easy.In fact, they sometimes made it as difficult as possible, because perhaps we might have a cataclysm come over us.Many might think ta fine thing to sit comfortably at home on the Sabbath and read their magazine rather than sit in a close room and teach the children, but after all it was not 80 good for the soul. The man who started out to seek his own happiness and give no thought to that of others did not find, but he who lost sight of his own and sought that of others found happiness.Their in- gathering and upbuilding of the church might seem slow work, they might meet wit but even these might be the chiefest of the blessings of God.He trps that the abundantly blessed in a i¢hetr Swork for the glory of the Kingdom of AT THE SUNDAY SCHOOL GATHERING in the afternoon, a special musical programme was carried out, and addresses were delivered by the Rev, Dr.Mackay and Messrs.J.Murray Smith, David Morrice and W.on Yale. The Rev.Dr.Scrimger preached at the evening service from the text, ‘To preach the acceptable vear of the Tord,” St.Luke, iv, 19.After discussing the interpretation of the text, and speaking of what Christianity had done daring © e past eighteen centuries, although it was to our shame that fully two-thirds of the human race still remained in ignorance of the Gospel of services en thse might © and misfortunes, .cates the prosperity of the Church, of every Christian congregation, of every Christian organization. We rejoice to-night in the indications of prosperity of this congrega tion; Entering upon a larger structure you have iarger opportunities before you than ever before, and you can look forward tu a brighter period of prosperity and greater ivileges. But do not sit down as if you wd done all.If you would attain to the elevated suinmit which God has set before all, to that idea of success which is placed Lefore you, then you will go ouward and apward. You have reached a point where vou can make a fresh start, and do your share in the work of carrying the salvation of Aimightx God to the ends of the earth.” An appeal y was made by circul on behalf of mission and kindred work.Last year 81028 was collected by the cougrepa- tion und allocated as follows: Cote St.Louis Mission, 3213; French Evangelization, $100; Home Missions, $100; Auginentation, 8100; ; Foreign Missions, $100; City Missions, $150; Hospital for the Insane, $80; Preshyterian - College, 875: Missionarv Record, $40; Aged and [ntiru Ministers’ Fund, $20 Widows’ ; and Orphavs, 320.The varioux needs of ; Che chureh were set forth as follows: Home « Missions.$3R,000; Aügmentation Fund, : Sal tan); Foreign Missions, 8115,000; F rench 4 Evangelization, S35,000; Colleges, $14,500, Theres were also the Widows’ nnd Orphans’ Fund and the Aged and Infirm Ministers’ “und.OUR TARIFF IN WASHINGTON.SPECIAL TO THE STAR.)
