Miss Maple Grove “The District's Finest Eating Place” CO.8-4971 HIGHWAY No.3 COLONIA COMMENTS MEMBERSHIP DRIVE BY CHATY PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION (By ALAN RICHARDSON) This coming Saturday morn- ins, at about 10.30, a motorcade will move off from Lang and Lockhart on a grand tour of the arca, the purpose being to launch a concerted membership drive for the Chatcauguay Property Owners’ Association. As the name implies, the group is open to all owners of properly in the Chatcauguay area, and it matters nut onc whit on which of the many developments you reside. As you probably know, there are other such associations but wcll venture to brag that CPOA is the largest and best, and of- | fors more to its members than \\ docs any other group of its i kind, If you took the {rouble to read the printed notice that was circularized last weckend, you'll ‘ have some idea of the activities of the CPOA, and when a representative calls on you he'll tell you more and answer any questions you may have, It doesn’t take much brains to realize a large property owners’ association is a power lo be reckoned with, and the bigger and stronger our association, the more weight we carry with legislative bodies, be they municipal, provincial or federal. You may have read the editorial in last week’s SUN, which stated that it was “time for a change” on the local political scene, an observation with which we're sure the majorily of residents will agree. If a suitable candidate is forthcoming for the office of mayor, for instance, and if he has the support of a strong property owners’ association, he should be home free.Need we elaborate? This is only one side of the picture. As you probably know, an active social program is provided for association members, man, woman and child. There are sports activities summer and winter, and the twice-monthiy association ectings have pro gressed beyond the communal being sessions which they used, alas, so often to be.You will have noticed that this week's meeting includes a demonstration for the do-it-yourselfers sponsored by the Abitiby Power and Paper Co.There will also be a furniture-building session incorporating such useful hints as how to saw the wood and not your finger.Later in the month it is hoped that CIL provide a film and speaker on the timely topic of landscaping. Then there are dances, summer fairs, Christmas parties for the kiddies and oh, no end of things. If you're not already a memm- ber of CPOA, give it some careful thought.Tuesday of next week (May 10) the Ladies’ Auxiliary meets once more.Even the distaff side is gong all do'it-yoursclf on that occasion, with instruction on how to finish a ba sement room, Presumably this is for the benefit of the ladies whose husbands are unhandy, or perhaps so that our wives can tell us what we're doing wrong.New Mercier Bridge Work to Start in June Chatting with MPP Maurice Laberge Monday about this and that and he tells us that work on the sccond span of the Mercier Bridge is to siart in June.Dominion Bridge Company has all the necessary steel, and all that has held things up so for has been the necessary Otlawa approval of the work (The SL Lawrence River is federal property).Mr.Laberge said he has seen the plans, which call for demolishing of the service sla- tions, mutel and other property between the "ridge and Centre Street, ang that when completed in 1961 the approaches to Mercier Bridge shoula rank with the finest on the continent. The plans include approaches to the bridge from Lafleur, Newman and the Lakeshore. Some slight idea of the cost may be gathered from the fact that expropriation alone will cost somcwhere in the region of a million dollars. There will be a baby clinie at Vetville Hall this Thursday, May 5, between the hours of 10 and 11 a.m.Had a number of phone calls about driveway-paving, following the item in las{ week's cu- lumn, and since we now have the necessary 10 orders, the price has dropped from $385 to $70.Since the contractor cannot bring in his heavy machinery until provincial authorities lift the spring ban on highway loads there is still time to gel in on it.As stated last week, the pr:- ce is for 9 x 50 driveway which has alrcady been prepared with a good gravel foundation, but one thing we didn’t understand last weck was that the cut-rate price applies to anyone in the Chateauguay area, not just to those in the Colonia region, A reminder that door t, door mail delivery is coming soon, and that mailboxes must be provided so that the poor mailman has somewhere to leave the bills. The variety of attractive boxes for sale by the Kinsmen Club should satisfy the most discriminating house-owner, and a selection of these can be seen at John Mercer's service station They are reasonably priced, too.(Continued on page 15) er a = an PAGE 10 THE ST.LAWRENCE SON Wednesday, May 4.1000 SNA i a mn a— | MANY TURN OUT there are very many details wihch must be straightened out before a group of the required size is completed and ready to go ahead. At any rate, the work is going ahead and you will hear further on this subject.FOOTNOTES I promised to give some information on the so-called Hudson Bay House, a name which is often useq erroneously for the large field stone house which is set back from the road just after passing Danis’ Garage on the way to the Basin, This was originally put up by the British Govt.as a store house for grain around 1760 and is one of the oldest, if not the oldest house, in the vicinity.Grain was actually stored upstairs. The floors are of hand hewn pine with the spaces between the planks filled in with small stones and mortar. The British Govt, apparently sold it to a family named LePailleur but during the rebellion of 1837 they commandeered the front two rooms as a barracks, the troops being under the command of a Capt.Clare Brown, This was ideal for the soldiers with the well being in the cellar and slots for the rifles in the cellar walls. The Lapailleur family lived there for three generations but sold out to Mr.Thos, Clark in 1876.Mr.Clark was the great uncle of Miss Rhoda McFarlane who still lives in Chateauguay and who is also a great fountain of information when it comes to the history of Cha- teauguay. It might be of interest ta say that when Mr.Clark bought the house, the location was in the centre of the En- (JEWELER — WATCHMAKER)* * co.saul fee the contractor, the SUN learned that he plans to get underway with the job this week and just as soon as the roads are open again to heavy traffic a mechanical shove! will be brought in, Without unexpected delays Mr.Charton expects to meet his completion deadline in November. After the Ceremony at the site, guests ang officials gathered at St.George's Church Hull where the ladies of the Women’s Auxiliary served coffee and other refreshments. As a humorous sidelins it should be mentioned that some 35 years ago the present Anglican Church and upstairs hall used to be known as the Tulley Dance Hall and during the reception in the hall on Sunday, glish speaking population of the district.Mr, Clark was the first to bring asparagus seed into Chateauguay, a product for which the farms here were famous for many years, Next week we will have further to say with regard to the posting house and possibly the old church. Many thanks are due to Miss McFarlane for the above information.Mayor Suyez and the prov.mens ber of parliament, Dlaurice L2- berge, were busy swapping me: mories, much to the delight of those listening in.As always the ladies did a graad job and the warm coffec they served was welcome lo all after standing out in the cold wind at the sod turning Community of Chateauguay with the turning of the sod for the new St.George's Anglican Church on St.Francis Bivd.It was a'so a culmination point for chairman Charles Grant and the other members of the building committee who for over a year worked hard to reach this goal.To them and the Rev.John Buck, without whose representation on behalf of the community at the higher church level a new church would have been an impossibility, our heartiest congratulations. We re: lize fully that there is still much to be done before the first church service takes place and we wisn all concerned God-speed in completing this important job.To us the new church not only means just another and perhaps bigger place to worsh’p God.We see it as an important means of bringing the Chateauguay community closer together. It’s very stetion of Chateauguay and the various new de xelopments. There is too much feeling of seper- ateness between the various new sections and between the new and old sections of Chateau- + guay.In a previous Editorial we pointed out the desireability of fusion between the Town of Cha- É, ieauguay and Chateauguay Centre as the only way of making Chatcauguay strong and putting it on a solid financial footing. While Chateauguay remains divided in so many seperate developments and districts no one is really going to progress and residents will continue to lack the services and conveniences | which make for better living. We therefore feel that the new Anglican | Church on St.Francis Blvd.will provide an im- | portant step towards a united Chateauguay because worshipping together under one roof more often than not creates a very close bond among members of one community.LAWRENCE SUN ve 4 , Sama ; matt.+ » 2 Jp SWS on Ns ne x location signifies this, It’s between
