“Eanrollement and Registration in University and Secondary Schools”, - The educational climate at present in the province has changed.Ideas have changed.Education is ‘now very important and a great and serious change in the educational system is being embarked upon.In 1961 there was an en- rollement of 114,000.It is predicted that in 1970 there will be 230,000 but the figure may be more correct to say 300.000.There is a $50 million building program underway that will accom- odate 9500 students when completed.Selective admission will be imperative at this time.2¢ Will MeGill become a metropolitan Collossus?Should quality be sacrificed to quality?Should it become a Columbia or should it become a Harcard instead?- selective quality. The failure rate in the first year will be 25-30% in accordance with the abôve reasoning.Mr, McDou- gall felt that they must work toward a compromise between serving the English population and the quality of the students. There must be more facilities and then more ‘students will be accepted, The vital problem is - where are the students going to go to school? There will be selective admissions with McGill laying the groun work, An early decision if planning to enter Uni versity wil] be required. At pre sent results come in the Fall, but they may have fo come in the Spring. There will be a new criteria for admission in 1962, namely: 1) complete High School record.9) Principals comfiden- tial recommendations, 3) college entrance examination.Board's test in J/arch.Matriculation exams, will be required of all students Canadian and American etc. There is now set up at McGill a new department with Mr.Walter K, Molson as Director of Admissions.Mr.McDougall next touched on the second part, namely “The School Boards Responsibility for Higher Education. He mentioned that there are several assets available such as evening courses in which some 9000 students are enrolled. There is the McLennan Travelling Library at many school’s disposal.Individual professors are ready to offer their services in a consulting capacity.Extension, consulting and advisory services should be available in all parts of the Province as there are in the City.Me :also told of McGill's feel- schools | in Quebec and stated that Mcuill strongly support the efforts to support bilingualism, This is (Continued on page 3) = 22e: sg D0!
