took someone's advice on how to save his blossoming cherry tree from the frost which came last Sunday night. The advice was to spray the tree ell night with a fine mist. The following morning the entire tree was frosted with ice which trailed in long icicles to the ground. As the hot sun melted the ice, the tree became weird and fantastic with crackling icicles on one side and blooming buds on the other. Now the Richardsons will have cherries later on, because the blossoms survived their ordeal by ice.Desjarlais was that the administration of Ottawa U.would not permit him to proceed with the courses because they decided it might interfere with the Department of Education of the Province of Quebec.Meanwhile, it is expected that the extension courses from McGill University will continue to be given in Hull during the next season as they have been given in the past.As for the local Professional Development Committee, it intends to provide in-service workshops and lectures from visiting professors as usual and might consider delving further into the possibilities of university credit courses to be given in Shawville. There are some on the committee who feel that providing educational facilities for teachers does not necessarily constitute interference and that a meeting of minds is still possible between the Quebec Department of Edu cation and the Education Fac ulty of Ottawa University.University extension courses cancelled for Shawville (continued on page 12) company Two Pontiac High girls win Bishops scholarships lot if there were 25 teachers interested in enrolling in University Credit courses he would arrange for these to be given as an extension service of the University of Ottawa.Mr Andai then immediately received applications for these courses from over thirty not be able to provide University Credit courses in Shawville as previously promised.Principal Dave Mackenzie of Pontiac High School has announced this week grade eleven students Carol Elliott and without a nurse crop works, or if you are not ready to I gamble a whole field, try an acre on one side of the field.Annual forages are another possibility for an emergency crop on a late field.Sudan-sorghum hybrids, Japanese millet, forage rape and kale are all useful alternatives each in its own way.Dr Norman Lawson points out that Sudan-sorghum is a heat-loving crop, limited for this reason to south-west Quebec and even there may not perform well in every year. But it can be planted later, in mid-June.\" In the past two years, in his trials at Macdonald College, the top four varieties (R.P.Morsu: Funks 92F: F.F.R.66; Dekalb Sudax II) yielded over six tons dry matter per acre. This is for a full season\u2019s growth, yields are considerably lower if more than the one cut is made, for green-chop, or pastured.Japanese millet is an old standby, and seems to do especially well in the Eastern Townships, where there is plenty of moisture. In a cool summer, it out-yields sudan-sorghum.Dr Lawson points out that there are three kinds of millet on the market; Japanese millet is the only seed he recommends.Kale, a member of the cabbage family, is popular in Europe, for fall feeding. In Canada, it is a rare crop, but at Lennoxville and at Macdonald College, it has put up some remarkably high yields.Last year, planted on May 27 and harvested October 22, it yielded 6.2 tons dry matter per acre in Dr Lawsons tests.Fodder rape is also useful for a fall forage although it does not yield as much as kale, it fits in where you want to summer-fallow until July.It makes good use of fertility, a chance therefore, to get the barnyard cleaned out before seeding. It is said to be most useful for beef cattle, because of a risk of tainting the milk; it is a member of the turnip family.Whatever complaints we have about the wet weather, and the problems of spring seeding, it brings the promise of a bumper hay crop. And let us never forget that the hay crop is the solid
