1,1993 m Letters Third-world phones Editorial i » Because it's not there Dear Editor: After a year of teeth-gnashing suffering, I am finally writing to bring to your attention once more of the untenable situation of our third-world telephone system in the Shawville area.1.\tWe cannot get a private telephone line.Telebec informs us there is a waiting list of more than 20 people.I know many of them; some of us have been waiting more than four years. They have been told they would get one in 1992, then in 1993, now we are all told 1994.Sometime, never.Further, should the miracle happen and the private line be installed, we have to pay an exorbitant mileage charge each month.Other telephone systems charge the mileage one time only, at the time of installation.CRTC, please review this policy of Telebec.Having a private line is not a matter of convertit is a necessity.Business development is impeded. No answering machines may be connected with a party line, no fax machines may be used, no modems connected.I have missed many essential calls and much essential information owing to this machine-challenaged state.Nor can I over emphasize the frustration of trying to make an urgent call when one of the other three parties who share my line is having an extensive conversation.Further, business contacts continually complain about not being able to reach me.2.\tAmbulance and some fire departments are actually a long-distance call. This is a hazardous situation.Sometimes I have had to wait up to three minutes for an operator to come on the line to take my number before my long-distance calls can go through. In an emergency, lives could be lost in that amount of time.3.\tLocal calling to Ottawa/Outaouais is essential.Having to consider whether to make each call to the city impedes business development.Family and other contacts hesitate to call us; we hesitate to call them.4.\tTelebec's rates are not reasonable.Even allowing for the relatively few lines per hectare, comparable areas served by Bell Canada pay substantially less.CRTC, please review Telebec's Monthly and Long Distance rates.Pontiac County is on the threshold of economic development in several promising areas and should not be impeded by an inferior telephone system.May I suggest that any politician who is able to improve the telephone system in this area would add a great deal to her/his credibility.A committee is being formed to improve Telebec's service.I urge everyone who is less than satisfied with Telebec's service to join our campaign. We will be posting petitions and preparing letters to send.Details will be in next week's paper.r Im What mountain climber was it more inclined than the present | who said that he was compelled to Liberals to shove a dump down scale the
