company spokesman said today.His 112 hours of work in seven days produced enough aluminum to build nine fighter planes.“I have a son with the navy somewhere in the Pacific,' he explained.“I can't summer has departed and the grim prospect of winter looms in the distance, the inhabitants of Isle Maligne are beginning to prepare themselves for the coming cold weather.In every back yard one sees huge piles ol wood, and cheery-faced men patiently throwing it into uood sheds or cellars.The other day.this wood question gave rise to a very interesting controversy.Mr.C.Cunningham and Mr.J.P.Cossette got into a heated argument over the qualities of several cords ol wood bought by the former.Mr.Cunningham maintained that his wood was of the very best, while Mr.Cossette insisted that it was very poor because, as he said, it did not ‘‘zing" when thrown on the ground.To settle the dispute they called in Mr.Ben Girard who is recognized a.-> lUite an expert in such matters, having worked on wood piles a great deal.After a very careful examination of the wood in question, Mr.Girard gave the verdict that the wood was ‘‘no good” because it did not zing .To prove that he knew what he was talking about he invited Messrs.Cunningham and Cossette to inspect his wood pile and to hear his wood “zinz”.It did “zing", to the great satisfaction of Mr.Girard who immediately announced it to be of A-l quality.Trouble arose, however, when the fact was brought to light that both Mr.Cunningham and Mr.Girard had purchased their wood from the same dealer, and that it had come from the same wood pile.When asked to explain why his wood "zinged” when Mr.Cunningham's didn't, Mr.Girard said that the difference lay in the fact that his wood was 2" longer.As a result of this dispute, sceptics are beginning to dcubt the "zing" theory as a method for testing the quality of wood.They figure that perhaps after all the old method ol burning the wood first and then determining its quality is the best.* * * The Isle Maligne Ski Club is also looking forward to the coming winter season.The clubhouse has been treated to a coat of paint and looks very nice and has been greatly improved by the Shawinigan.He was known to be one of the oldest aluminum producers A Last Tribute to Mr.M.Carrière Wishing to pay a last tribute to the late Mr.Melchior Carrière, the production superintendent, the workers ot our factories came in great numbers to his imposing funeral.It may be noted that a great many workers whose shift ended at 8 o’clock that morning wished also to be present at tne church service.In the cortege were seen the main directors of the Company: Messrs.R.E Powell, president, N E.Russell and E H Acton, former local managers.P.E.Radley and the superintendents of all other needed.” Mr.Carrière was born in St.Philippe, in the county of Argenteuil.the 2nd of Dec.1879.He came at Shawinigan the 4th of January, 1901.He first worked on the construction of * u> Belgo.then for a few months on the construction of the Aluminum Company, in those days the Northern Aluminum Company, to return later to the Belgo which he left to come back definitely to the Aluminum Company that same year.Mr.Carrière started out as a potman in the pot room *he 18th of October 1901.At the end of six weeks, he was promoted assistant-foreman, then two years later foreman.In 1907.he was named day foreman.In 1913, he had all the prerogatives of a superintendent, a post which was oificially established in 1920 and which he held until his death.It is interesting to note that during those forty years he only missed two weeks for reasons of ill-health.Moreover, Mr.Carrière Is a pioneer of Shawinigan, for he saw our town rise, grow and develop into the prosperous industrial town it is today.The deceased leaves a widow, formerly Marie Proulx, and one daughter Estelle.In the name of the Company, we offer to the bereaved family our most sincere sympathies.
