2-—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRI., JULY 4, 1980 Zero Factor has slick surface “The Zero Factor” by William Oscar Johnson (POCKET»: *2.95, 330 pp.The political scenario of William Oscar Johnson’s novel goes like this: the time is November 1980, and Augustus Alvin York, former Governor of Kentucky, a Chicago Bears end for 16 years, has been elected to the American presidency in an amazing upset over the Democratic incumbent (unnamed but we-know-who).Gus York is attempting to turn the country around with a Republican program that reflects his own mountains of Kaintuck background rather than the traditional catering to big money, big business and the conservative bastions of U S.policy.Enter the Zero Factor: Since 1840 no President of the United States who won election in a year ending in zero has left office alive.Death, by the hand of an assassin, or by natural causes, the Zero Factor has played a part in the American presidential succession. For Gus York, namesis stalks the international routes of terrorism as a professional assassin, known as Le Bombardier, due to his preference for plastique exploded by remote control. While author Johnson offers us a portrait of a simple, down home president plagued by the energy, finance and foreign affairs crunches, as the inevitable confrontation between chief executive and hired assassin develops.Insights into the president's Kaleidoscope BY RICHARDLONEY typical day are less revealing than Nixon’s memoirs. The author inserts a disclaimer to the effect that all of the computer technology, explosives techniques and politics in the book are entirely fictional. He needn't have bothered.“The Zero Factor” is too glib, too easily spun out a tale, devoid of feeling for actual events. In a word it lacks realism. We do not become attached enough 6o the personality of Gus York to be apprehensive about his impending fate.As light entertainment, “The Zero Factor” has to be rated with “Jaws” or “The Exorcist”.With a more realistic narrative it could have been far more scary in an election year that ends with a zero.Wishbone Ash “Just Testing” (MCA) Their late 1979 release marked a rebirth for England’s Wishbone Ash, and this album is sort of a second opinion after their resurgence. It’s old wave, verging on progressive Brit rock, but like most of those outfits, Ash i has begun io make the human voice an impressive segment of their arsenal of sound.Guitars are still the key to Wishbone Ash’s approach to Eighties rock, and the accent is on the type of repetitive, dominant riff ripping that formed the basis for the Heavy Metal crews, Wishbone Ash, while heavy enough in their approach to rock, escape the narrower confines of the Sabbath, Grand Funk category through vocal dexterity and innovative stylings.Cherie and Marie Currie “Messin" With The Boys” (CAPITOL) The Currie girls may well be identical twins, as far as the cover art reveals on their album, but as for their singing, they are dual approaches to the up-front brashness of Deborah Harry of Blondie fame.Backed by a slick studio assembly (Porcaro, Lukather, and Winding), with Jai Winding also supplying arrangements, the Currie sisters are considerably more middle-of-the-roadish in choice of material than the outrageous Ms.Harry.Marie’s vocal on Eric Carmen’s "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)” is one of the few occasions when the vocals are not shared. It is by far the most outstanding cut on this album by two saucy blonde songstresses cashing in on the prominence of female rockers with successes such as Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and Blondie.Pekins delight Cowansville diners By JOHN McCAGHEY COWANSVILLE — As you swing down South St.from Main you might just think you had seen a stage being set up for a Hollywood ‘duster.’ Nope pard, that isn't the Last Chance Saloon, but the Cafe Terrasse. The rustic exterior decor continues in the interior and the walls are enhanced with photos of the early days of Cowansville.“It's highly appropriate,” explains co-owner Philippe Lizotte.“After all, the oldest buildings when the town was originally settled were located in this vicinity, along the banks of the Yamaska.” Phil and Yvon Nadeau opened the cafe-bistro in May of 1979 and it has become one of the most popular spots in town, especially during hot spring and summer days when the patrons can enjoy the terrace overlooking the river or sit under parasols outside the rear with trees whispering overhead.“All our main entrees are home-made/'Phil continued.“Yvon’s mother provides us with fresh tourtières and chicken pot pies on a daily basis, but quite frankly our main drawing card is the all-you-can-eat salad bar which we feel is a bargain at $3.75.” We wandered over and surveyed the selection as the lunch hour patrons entered and Phil’s statement proved more than accurate as they lined up to dig in, Wining and dining and dig in they did! A crock of pea soup led the list, followed by ham, salami, turkey cold cuts, and Matane shrimps.Potato and macaroni salads surrounded a bowl of cottage cheese while the marinades included beets, green and yellow beans and chickpeas.Appropriate garnishes as well as mounds of sliced cucumbers and sliced tomatoes were in abundance.Hot smoked meat is the favorite sandwich.Although the decor is rustic the bar setup is highly efficient and worthy of a Crescent Street establishment. The owners admitted they had a problem when they opened - the Quebec Liquor Board was on strike."We made a decision which proved to be another success," Phil said.“We checked out a Townships winery and found a dry red which exceeded our fondest expectations. We had it bottled under our own label and we offer a % litre bottle for a mere $4.75, which is a bargain these days.” The cafe draws mainly from the mid-twenties to the forties age group and chansonniers are a way of life."There is rarely a cover unless the person is a highly renewed artist,” Phil continued, “and most of them are bilingual and can entertain our anglophone friends, although the majority of our clientele is francophone.” Owners and clientele alike are most interested in the restoration of the Yamaska River and they took part in a recent drive when 1,200 seedlings were planted along the banks in the Cowansville sector. They have also provided a bit of beauty as well as a new pastime, feeding a flock of ducks. They hit on the idea last summer when the feathered Pekins caught everyones fancy, ultimately ending up on tables during a roast last autumn.Eyes will be on the river on July 5, when the Cafe Terrasse will be sponsoring canoe races as part of the sidewalk fiesta and undoubtedley later on this summer when work begins to completely restore the South Street bridge and sidewalk superintendents offer gratuitous advice.A cool one or iced tea - they’re both available in ample quantities.Big Dipper cookery is really garden fresh The Georgeville restaurant keeps its own rabbits for the rabbit with mustard sauce specialty.By JUDITH KELLOCK-HEWARD GEORGEVILLE — A beaming chef, white-aproned, answered the door of the old Georgian Lodge, newly christened "Aux Berges de la Grand’Ourse" or “Down by the Big Dipper A little country inn, "somewhere in France" seems to be the inspiration for chef Richard Bizier and partner Roch Nadeau, who closed the doors of their inn in Notre Dame du Bois to settle a month ago in Georgeville atop the hill overlooking Lake Memphremagog and the Benedictine Abbey, The cuisine is French, "and international", adds Bizier, and is based on the freshest ingredients available from the nearby kitchen garden, rabbit hutch, hen house and guinea hen house. The ducks wander free from time to time. The one called Napoleon strides about like a general.Fresh herbs, fresh vegetables, fresh blackberries from the hedge, green walnuts from the trees on the inn property, conspire with locally made cheeses, specially-fed chickens and conies to create a cuisine that has nothing to do with the freezer and the microwave oven.Right now there are 12 bedrooms for inn guests and four dining rooms for guests, and visitors on a call-ahead basis (843-8646).The gastronomic menu is eight courses long, comes as a complete surprise to the eager diner, and wears a $22.50 price tag, service and tax included.Bring your own bottle of wine, enough for an aperitif as well as the liquor license has not yet arrived.A more modest four-course meal may be had for $12, plus service and tax.Bizier promises delights such as long summer brunches to music from Jeunesses Musicales students played on the old-fashioned verandah.Bizier feels uninhibited when it comes to menus. He might, if the weather were right, serve a North African couscous, or a Hungarian goulash. One of his favorites is three-month-old rabbit bathed in a sauce of Dijon mustard, white wine, with a splash of country cream.Another is duckling sparked with fresh peaches and still another, baked car-doons, long, tender salsify-like roots done in the oven. For the present only one sitting, at 7:30 p.m.is available.A party of 10, delighted with a recent feast, reported a four-hour stint at table, ending in filtered coffee, and tiny mints.Lunch is also available on a reservation-only basis, and might feature Biz-ier's Gazpacho, a concoction somewhat like iced velvet, or a choice mackerel braised in white wine. and without a ladder yet - is superb. But his Ti-Mile, his clochard (the all-day customer who opens the tavern at 8 a m.and closes it at 2:00 a m ), his swaggering construction worker and beaten down mechanic are just as good.Marcel Gauthier, a speedy shoe salesman last year, has upgraded this character to a manager for the 1980 version of Broue, although he still has the same, single-minded preoccupation with the shoe business and betrays the same impotence His flexibility is evident in the other roles he brings to life the hen-pecked husband, a rocker and the svelte-suited Englishman. As one of two waiters who run Chez Willie, Gauthier is the only one to demonstrate some real human contact in his dialogue with Pointu, the fireman. The second waiter, psychiatrist in all but the pay cheque, is played by Marc Messier, who really comes into his own in this year's production. He puts in a sizzling per formance as the itchy-fingered, compulsive pyromaniac, a singles swinger and especially the wide-eyed boy, Leo.Teaming up with Cote as the other construction worker and mechanic, Messier also joins him in a riotous skit about Louis and Roch’s sit-in protesting the transformation of taverns into brasseries. After downing more than 300 beers, they are still keeping tabs on who’s paying for the next bottle.Their exchange is probably the ultimate indication that, rather than helping men to communicate, taverns lead to their self-withdrawal.Roch and Louis end up conversing with themselves instead of each other. We’ve got nothing but unqualified praise for the work of these actors and their self-direction.Only with a disciplined effort is one able to identify each actor behind the masque.Their timing and comedic sense is impeccable. Many in the audience on opening night were obvious converts of the first Broue.Although they had seen most of it before, they were not disappointed with the second edition. In the summer season when English plays abound locally, it’s easy to forget that French theatre is also thriving.Broue unequivocally makes its heady presence felt.Smoking is a dying habit.Join the Majority — Be a Non-Smoker. 4—TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRI., JULY 4, 1980 Brome County Museum opens doors KNOWLTON - TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRI., JULY 4, 1990 5 TOWNSHIPS SCENE Diving school opens up new world Boisvert explains diving side off ice of his school.gear Record Perry Beaton.in the lake- By JUDITH KELLOCK HEWARD MAGOG - “You don’t learn to dive in books,” announced Jacques Boisvert, snatching away a copy of Diving for Fun.“You learn by diving.” Boisvert, certified with the Professional Diving Instructors' College, has been diving for years, and has just launched an international diving school on Lake Memphremagog, a school accredited by the provincial Department of Education.Boisvert insists on the international aspect of the school and of the lake, and hopes to start a Newport counterpart in diving instruction next summer. His aim is broader than the teaching of diving technique, although he intends to do throughly, with a student-teacher ratio of 4-1.The educational aim seems to be two fold: mastery learning, so popular in England during the ’50s and '60s, where a student progresses at his own rate in a series of graded steps; and a new knowledge of diving sites on the lake, full of buried steamers, and the life of the region’s past.Working from old prints, such as the Bartlett prints, he has located the old wharf near Belmere, where Sir Hugh Allan’s pleasure steam yacht, the Orford, was moored. The Orford was no small rowboat, but a craft 86 feet in length. In his boathouse-office Boisvert proudly displays the anchors of various buried ships, while on the porch of his lakeside house is the large rusted anchor of the Anthémis, one of Captain Clarke’s steamers, which plied the lake waters around the beginning of the century, transporting between 200 and 300 tourists to and from the large old hotels, such as Memphremagog House in Newport, an all-wood mansion which boasted 500 guestrooms.Even the modest Camperdown Hotel in Georgeville had 300 rooms. The Lady of the Lake in service until 1917, outclassed the Anthémis in size as she was a paddle-w'hee! steamer designed and built on the Clyde, shipped in pieces to Montreal, with an overland leg to Magog where she was assembled. The Lady carried 1200 people to fashionable destinations along the lake.Boisvert even hints at the existence of a ship graveyard, which he swears to find before very long.Meanwhile, his collection of bottles retrieved from his daily dives grows and grows. Two handsome black bottles, probably once containers for best brandy, were found off Sir Hugh Allan’s old wharf.A sirop d’anis bottle recalled the pharmaceutical company famed for popping a good dose of opium into the licorice mixture. The diving course seems fairly rigorous. The use of the very new and gorgeous equipment heads the list of tasks for Open Water One.Emergency ascents are introduced by the third lesson, and dangers of all kinds are explored in the theory lectures.Divers learn about embolisms and ruptures, about nitrogen narcosis and rapture of the depths, the mysterious condition which hits some divers as early as a depth of 60 feet, and | which affects nearly all i divers to some degree at a ; depth of 150 feet. The sensations are similar to alcoholic intoxication, | including mental confusion and an impairment of logical thinking.Divers in warm, clear water seem to experience euphoria while divers descending the 200 feet to the wreck of the Andrea Doria in the cold and dark reported a sensation of gloom and fear. Many of the dangers are minimized by what Boisvert both advocates and practices: planned dives Part of his diving equipment is a compass, and every move of his dives are pre-planned.Boisvert's emphasis on safety permits him to carry on the Cousteau tradition of underwater research parmapacnan in mo**m*nl loi p»ison»t h Boutique We have a variety oi gifts you need Prop.: Georgette & Michel Brault KNOWLTON: 293 KN0WLT0N RD.Adults - $1 50 Children under 12 - FHEE • * • FBI .& SAT JULY 4, 5 FIVE DAYS FROM HOME George Peppard Neville Brand P G SUNDAY JULY 6 AnAMtfllCANlNTEftNAnONAl Belette DOUG McCLURE PETER CUSHING CAROUNE MUNRO MON , TUES .WED ,& THURS JULY 7, 8, 9, 10 OVER 14 HILUOH PEOPLE MiHt t 1HAT AMERICAS *1 HOt OEEICI HIT IS."A ton or pleasure:." Mel Tillis; Elektra Records; X6E-271.A couple of years ago, Mel Tillis discovered he could sell a lot more records if he performed pleasant, bland music that never asks his listeners to think or feel. That’s what we’ve been getting from him ever since, and this album is more country music for Las Vegas fake.Tillis is aiming for the heart of common-denominator taste, so the 10 songs are predictable, antiseptic and boring.Country music deserves better than this, but what’s musical integrity if you can sell records.Star; Marie Bottrell; MBS Records; MBS-2003.Marie Bottrell’s shrill, little-girl voice doesn’t have the color or tone necessary to express complex emotions, such as those in Shel Silverstein’s The Ballad of Lucy Jordan.Even in her own compositions, such as Baby It's You, Bottrell’s passion doesn't sound as if she's on fire, as her lyrics say.Bottrell is trying for sophistication, but what comes across is a little girl dressed up in her mother's high heels. As a result, it's difficult to assess just how capable a vocalist she might be.Bottrell would do much better to write and sing about feelings she’s experienced. It’s not a good idea to try to build a career on a woman-of-the-world image, when one is obviously not a woman-of-the-world John Henry; same; JHL Records; JHL-1301.What a great album! John Henry and the musicians on this session have captured the raw energy that separates really caring about the music from the calculated, contrived slickness of so many of today’s records. From the opening notes of Dave Dennison’s rockabilly song, Lookout World, to the fading fiddle strains on the Redd Stewart-Pee Wee King classic, Tennesssee Waltz, the music is alive and kickin'.The album s only weak song is Henry’s composition, Love Is Gone.On the other nine cuts his versatile baritone brings the lyrics alive. The musicianship is first rate, background voices are used effectively, and producers Barry Brown and Peter James have left a rough edge on the sound which adds to the music's sense of urgency.Ten years from now this album will still have its spark Great country! Chicago sound returns with Blues By DONNELLY Record companies are notoriously consenative about where they invest their money.Unwilling to take needless risks, they continually churn out the same old variations on a successful tune until the cash box registers 'no sale’.Not only are most record executives closed-minded about trying something new. They harbour built-in prejudices about music tried-and-true.When Tom Lavin first began to peddle a demo of his Powder Blues Band, recorded in his small 16-track studio (paid for from earnings when he played bass for Prism, he quickly learned that no one even wanted to hear about the blues, a non-existent market they claimed. After two years of playing clubs in and around Vancouver, Lavin knew Powder Blues had that magic touch as the audience response to their music was pretty convincing. It’s a good thing Lavin went with his instincts instead of smart-ass good business sense. The Powder Blues Band is currently the hottest Canadian music group around. When there were no takers on the demo, Lavin decided to produce the band’s debut album himself and sold a treasured 20-year-old Stratocaster guitar to finance the pressing of 1000 copies.First selling them at the band’s club dates Powder Blues got their big break when the top record shop in Vancouver, A & B Sound, agreed to carry 100 copies. They didn’t last long.Impressed by initial sales of the album, entitled, Uncut, the owner of A & B Sound ordered and even financed the pressing of 1000 more copies. When these disappeared in three days simply through in-store play, the ordering cycle was continued.A & B began to distribute directly to other record shops in the west, including major franchises which persisted in purchasing despite hassles from their head offices. In Vancouver at this time, the only LP outselling Uncut was Pink Floyd’s The Wall — pretty good competition.Within a month 15,000 copies had been sold without a slick marketing strategy or real financing backing, just a lot of chutzpah and the music power of the Powder Blues Band. Two Vancouver radio stations had begun including several tracks from Uncut, especially Doin’ It Right on the playlist.A program director visiting the west coast was turned on to Powder Blues and brought the album back to his Windsor radio station. At last the record companies started nibbling and Tom Lavin, bogged down with the commercial end of things, turned to Prism's manager, Bruce Allen, for some help.Allen negotiated a one-album release deal with RCA and now manages Powder Blues.Lavin is back to what he loves, playing and producing. And Uncut, distributed under the Blue Wave label, is certified platinum (100,000 copies sold) and still going strong.Like Lennoxville’s Highstreet, the Powder Blues Band gets its spark from two brothers. But Tom Lavin who plays guitar and brother Jack, bassist, hail from Chicago, where their taste for the blues was nurtured by the originals. In a Winnipeg Free Press interview, Tom said, “I grew up on the south side of Chicago playing with all these guys most people think are legends.I know them as taxi drivers in the day and the guys who play for $10 a night.” Lavin knew back then he wanted his own band and is confident that in the Powder Blues musicians he’s found the right combination.Along with his brother, piano and organ player Willie MacCalder is an original member from the Gastown club dates.Drummer Duris Maxwell a#* Powder blues band can really make audiences respond.joined in soon after. Then a spiffy horn section was added, spearheaded by saxophonist David Woodward, an eight-year veteran of the Downchild Blues Band.As part of a major get-acquainted cross-Canada tour, the seven-piece Power Blues Band will soon be lighting a blues fuse at La Poupee.Blue wave is a phrase Lavin coined when trying to combat the new wave syndrome The Piggery Theatre presents Wuiic Ly fêodçeri, dCyrici by J4art which still maintains a stranglehold on the recording in dustry. On Sunday night we’ll find out if the Powder Blues Band has the ammunition to make that wave break.Running 'til July 19 lues.toFri 8:30 p m Sat.6:00 S 9:30 p.m.North Hatley, Qué.Box Office (819) 842-2191 Country Suppers are served prior to performance.LES AMIS DE L'OPERA Presents A Piano Concert with Young Prodigious Pianist Marc Andre Hamelin WORKS; spectacular TV turnarounds in recent years The Jeffersons' not only righted itselt.it hit number one a few weeks ago. It's hard to pinpoint one specific reason for 'The Jeffersons' renaissance, but one does not criticise the scriptwriting which has remained consistently good over the long haul.Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford who play George and Louise Jefferson haven't lost any of their combative and comedic spirit over the last five years (yes it's been that long). The secondary zanies on Hie program also continue to lie a source of enjoyment as welt.Marla Gibbs who portrays the caustic maid Florence improves with very episode and is worthy of a series of fier own Paul Benedict (Bentley), Roxie ¦j* Roker and Franklin Cover as Y Æ $ the Jeffersons 'zebra' inlaws also shine when called upon to do battle with George. What will happen to n the Jeffersons next year is ’ anybody's guess but with Alice' as lead-in it shouldn't make all that much differ ence So why did The Jeffersons'
