— Brae Manor Theatre has long closed its doors and the Lakeview House has been closed for seven years, depriving the community of cultural and other activities.But this will soon be remedied when the hotel, which originally opened in 1874, gets a facelift leading to the advent of dinner theatre.Ron Blair, a self-avowed history buff, bought the Lakeview and intends eventually to restore it to its original grandeur.Emma Stevens, more than a theatre buff, will look after the staging and production of the full gamut of entertainment which will probably begin in mid-August.“I’ve always been interested in photographing old buildings, graveyards, in fact my current project Emma Stevens.From comedy to the bizarre.is shooting the graves of all the former Prime Ministers of Canada,” Blair explained.“The Lakeview is a historic place and I have a flair for renovating so I thought I’d like to save it for history’s sake as it was a shame to see it falling apart what with Knowlton being the hub of the Townships.” BECAME REASONABLE “I approached the owners about three years ago and they wanted first class money for a run-down building; however, the price finally became reasonable and I bought it,” Blair said.“Even so the restorations are going to cost some $250,000 over my original estimates.I definitely want the exterior returned as close as possible to its Victorian beauty.” Blair’s critical path calls for reopening on July 1, but the possibility of interruptions due to the current construction contractual problems may cause some delays.Blair said one of the first items on the agenda was the installation of a first class dining room, “something sadly lacking in Knowlton today,” as well as a pub-type back bar with pub-type food — no disco, thank you very much.He envisions the possibility of serving dinner in the theatre as well as in the dining room, but the certainty will be excellent food coupled with top flight entertainment.Enter Emma Stevens who graduated from the Guildford School of Acting in Surrey, U.K., which was affiliated with the Y von Arnaud School of Theatre.She paid her dues in small productions, eventually made it to London’s West End where she was an understudy, then finally landed the lead in “There’s a Girl in my Soup”.FOLLOWED HUSBAND Married and with a child in tow she followed her former husband to Knowlton.The move did nothing to dispel her love for the theatre and from that emerged the Knowlton Youth Group’s production of “Je- sus Christ Superstar”.It was a hit and this resulted in the formation of the adult Lac Brome Theatre Group who performed “Play On” during the winter carnival to the delight of both the audience and cast.Devoid of makeup, stage or otherwise, her eyes sparkled in anticipation of the re-opening of the Lakeview and its theatre.“We’re planning two or three shows weekly over the year and they ’ll range from comedy to the bizarre, remembering we will be limited by the size and area of the stage and its facilities,” Emma explained.“We will certainly be using amateurs for three or four shows a year but to survive we have to have pro-fessional actors,” Emma concluded.ONLY SHELL LEFT All that remains of the Lakeview is the shell today but workers, local and as talented as available, are getting ready to jack it and level it, then get on with the interior restoration.Blair set the first phase as completion of the ground floor for 1986, the second storey bedrooms will come in 1988 and the third storey possibly by 1990.One of the sidelights of the gutting was finding a full pack of Turret cigarettes with a contest coupon calling on the owner to return it by the end of August 1932.Back in the 1870s four-legged horse power was the way and things won’t have changed too much over the years.Blair said the coach house would be restored and the Lakeview would provide horses and carriages for wedding bridal parties with the driver in suitable livery.Another flashback to a bygone era will be afternoon tea in the Lakeview dining room.“The lakeview used to be the centre of all the activities in town with service club meetings and the like and I intend to see that happen again with the community’s interest in mind,” Ron said.“We’ll provide a room free of charge to any non-profit organization — all they have to do is put in their own telephone.” Meanwhile as the interviews were going on last weekend, a host of volunteers and friends were out in the sun at an auction to raise funds at the Thirsty Boot with all the proceeds going to amateur theatre.Many a budding actor or section a number of Grands Cru Classé wines from the region of Bordeaux.These 1983 “Bordeaux Primeurs” represent a number of excellent Chateaux from the Me-doc, St.Emilion, Graves and Po-merol.Before you turn in your RRSPs however, there are several comments about the 1983 Bordeaux that should be made.This particular year had, as they say, its ups and downs.June proved to be an excellent month with adequate sun and rain to guarantee a good flowering.July was also good with plenty of sun — in fact temperatures hit record highs.But by August the heat, now combined with too much rain, resulted in a continuing battle with mildew.For those growers who sprayed Wine Bits By TIMOTHY BELFORD on a regular basis — weekly at times — the mildew proved to be no more than a costly inconvenience since MotherNature final ly got over her snit, blessing the region with an excellent September and October.The end result is that 1983 is an excellent vintage but irregular with the Medoc area fairing better than either St.Emilion, Graves or Pomerol.Or, to put it in the words of Robert Parker, editor and publish of The Wine Advocate, 1983 was an “.an abundant vintage of very good, some- times outstanding wines that are quite large-scaled in size and weight.” To find out which wines turned out well and which didn’t, you will have to purchase a good guide to the region such as Parker’s own Bordeaux.In short, caveat emp-tor, which translates roughly as “Don’t buy what you don’t know.” In another direction entirely, I tried a bottle of Casai Mendes Rose this week ($6.35 per litre) which only reinforced my belief that summer-time drinking is best done with Portugese wines — red, rosé or white.I haven’t had a bottle of this lightly-bubbling refresher in some time now but it was everything I remembered and more.Good as an aperitif, it will also serve as an excellent accompaniment to a barbecue, a picnic or that mid-da y-after-the-lawn-cuttin g sandwich you so richly
