TOWNSHIPS WEEK—WEDNESDAY.DECEMBER 31.1986—3 From now on it will be plain old Eaton and Zeller It's resolution time! Yup.1987 is right around the corner and it's time to make all those loolish promises that last about as long as a .Joe Clark government.Last year I promised not to be mean to Brian Baloney but the temptation was far too great. This year might he different, however, especially with Bill Vander Zalm around to take up some of the burden of being Canada's biggest horse's whatsit.Any way.here goes for 1987.First oil .in the spirit of linguistic peace, 1 promise not to put apostro-phies in any of those offensive English-language store names. From now on it will he just plain old Eaton and Zeller.I ll also ask George MacLaren to set an example by removing all that unnecessary English from office signs. You know the ones — "Danger”, "In case of fire break glass”, “Keep away from children", etc.I might even stop reading bilingual road signs. After all if the tourists don't need things like "One w^ay only”, "This lane ends 300m" and "Oncoming buses in left lane", neither do I.I also promise not to refer to Margaret Thatcher as Attila the Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE Hen any more, nor will I accuse her ol being so far right she makes Ghengis Khan look liberal.(Actually she’s so far to the right she makes John Turner look liberal. But that’s another story. And while I'm at it, I promise not to refer to Sheila Copp's shrill voice, John Crosbie’s weight problem.Bourassa’s nose, or Bryce Mackasey’s* anything for an entire year.Furthermore.I resolve not to mention the Canadian Senate in a derogatory manner in 1987.As a matter of fact.I even promise not to wake them if you don't.As a special resolution 1 also resolve not to criticise television sports announcers no matter how many dumb things they say.Since they usually manage to make about seven ridiculous comments a minute, this will be a toughy but I promise to bite my lip.On second Legal drama will suffer from deadly time slot By Bill Anderson TORONTO (CPI — As so often happens.CBC’s newest series is a mix of noble ideas and bad liming.Street Legal, a prime-time drama about young urban lawyers, premieres Jan.(i with the aim of capturing the zip and sizzle of life in a Canadian metropolis. But it comes on the schedule in a deadly time slot — on Tuesdays opposite Moonlighting, the ABC and CTV hit and almost four months after the launch of two legal shows.L.A.Law, a sort of Hill Street Blues with lawyers, caught on with audiences when was launched this fall on Friday nights. It was recently moved by NBC to Thursday, where it immediately picked up more viewers following the four hottest shows in television.Meanwhile, veteran TV star Andy Griffith has made a success of Matlock, a canny, homespun lawyer who appears on NBC and CTV in the hour before Moonlighting.ONLY SIX WEEKS Street Legal has two additional problems — its newness to the schedule and a run of only six weeks until it reappears next season.Despite all this, the series will still be a modest reward for those who find it — if only because of the stunning visual images of Toronto. In the best tradition of entertainment dreamscapes, Toronto appears far more scintillating and beautiful on screen than it is in real life. Some viewers may not want to look at Toronto in any light, owing to a long-established prejudice against the city in many parts of the country. But Toronto appears so glistening, so glamorous — so hot — that it may stir some national pride in even the hardest regional hearts.MUST IMPROVE Alas, pretty pictures alone do not make a series (Miami Vice also has great music) and Street Legal must improve on the flat dialogue and casual pace if it is to rise above the mere visual appeal of the first episode. The opening hour tries to sketch the characters of the three principals: beautiful but human Carrie Barr; brilliant but modest Leon Robinovitch; and ambitious but loyal Chuck Tchobanian. The names of the characters are a poor choice, because they break the writing adage about keeping names simple and distinct.Carrie is close to Chuck, while Robinovitch and Tchobanian will be a blur to anyone not of eastern European descent.Rut the crucial problem, as with any new series, is creating characters who somehow engage the audience enough to tune in again seven days later. And this is where the first hour of Street Legal falls short.thought, this resolution will become null and void if O.J.Simpson is involved or Howard Cosell comes out of retirement. As a matter of fact I better include John Madden, Dick Irving.Howie Meeker, Frank Gifford and anybody working for ABC.Finally, I promise not to malign Tim Raines or Andre Dawson even if they don’t get picked up by another team and have to return to those rotten Expos who only want to pay them peanuts.Seven-figure peanuts to be sure, but still peanuts.'This resolution is only valid if Mr.Mackasey stays in retirement even if offered the ambassadorship to Albania.a In 1987, Tadeusz promises not to accuse Margaret Thatcher of being so far right she makes Genghis Khan look liberal.PnE-PUBUCITE I FILM ENKTTENTE DE CLASSEMENT Heroes.Trouble They’re on the wrong side Ac GLAU HiniAINMEW PfMSEM EOT DEMI VERONICA CARÎ1IGHÎ critic for Toronto's Star, revives what looks like a serial character in Foreign Object, as he brings back the hero of his first novel Matinee Idol, named Tom Coward, who just happens to be an entertainment journalist who covers film for the dailies. In this mildly amusing, if predictable.novel.Coward arrives at Cannes.France for the annual film festival, allowing writer Base to cash in on many of the character types and filmdom stereotypes he has encountered in his job to add the local color to what is a rather thin book.Coward knows the whole gamut of Cannes folk, from the mysterious.sexy nymph who turns to him for protection in a bar, embroiling him in sudden bit of violence with a craggy-faced hood known as Rakko: to the mother/daughter act so reminiscent of Brooke Shields and her show bi/.zy mom; to the sleazy producer who has a non-stop, revolving casting couch where he promises exciting leads in major films to aspiring porno flick stars, only to have to inform them that they didn’t pass the audition. As Coward freelances around the steamy French film capitol, Foreign Object provides the reader with what must be the ambience of the international festival, with parties and promiscuity the order of the day.Beneath the glittery facade of quick deals and megabuck pictures such as the epic Saudi being hyped at the Cannes Festival that unfolds, is an undercurrent of death and violence that begins when movie financier Sir Cecil House and his yacht full of guests are stabbed and his seventy foot Hatteras craft burns off St.Tropez.With the Festival unfolding in the midst of its usual hype and sensationalism.Tom Coward tries to locate the haunting female who led him into the scrapwith Rakko, and becomes doubly perplexed when the wife of Saudi's producer bears a striking resemblenec to the mystery lady.RON BASE Kaleidoscope Ru Dlf'UADn ¦ * By RICHARD LONEY A iter he has been seduced by Dieter Voss’s wife Corinne, Tom Coward finds that the producer will go to any lengths to secure a property for filming — in this case it’s Coward’s first book — even supplying his wife’s body for his potential partner’s satisfaction. If Ron Base has been at all attentive to the goings on at the numerous Cannes Festivals he has covered for his paper, then the outra geous happenings in Foreign Object probably have a great deal of verisimilitude about them — in any event they certainly sound authentic. There are American filmmakers pushing a junky moneymaker titled Buns; a three hundred pound tub of guts resembling Sydney (Jreenstreet, known as “the Director", who holds court in a Cannes watering-hole regaling the unwashed with his priceless tales of early Orson Welles, or Bob Mitchum cadging a free feel of an Italian starlet’s obvious assets; plus lots of talk about picture financing and how deals are constructed from thin air with everyone talking about getting certain percentages of the properties.Ron Base makes it sound authentic.and as a mystery read, while I’.l).James it is not, it is a glimpse of a world that we hear about each year, which, after Foreign Object, will not seem as impossibly “Hollywood" as it often appears.RECORD REVIEWS Cheap Trick THE DOCTOR (COLUMBIA) Always one of Ihe few rock groups who have tongues firmly implanted in cheeks when they put on their shows, Rick Nielsen & Robin Zander bring their sense of the outrageous to their latest Cheap Trick album THE DOCTOR.Nielson's guitars and the most consistently weird collection of hats in all of rock, plus Zander’s Rod Stewart blowsy & blonde, teased and tuff visual aspects never overpower the music with Trick.Clever lyrics, double entendres rampant underlie the songs by Nielson, singly, or in tandem with Zander, such as the title track with its cute slant on the Doctor Feel Good angle.Or there's the smoking track "Good Girls Go To Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere)', wherein Cheap Trick make music out of ob vious social observation. If only Prince.Corey Hart and others of the polity ilk could see how stilted and phoney they look when compared to the nuttiness of Cheap Trick the current Stateof Rock might not be so laughable.Jennifer Warnes FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT (ATTIC CAPITOL) A sketch on the sleeve of this ex- ceptional album suggests that Ms.Warnes was going to title it JENNY SINGS LENNY, but instead it bears the imprint of one of the Leonard Cohen songs that really gets classied up, thanks to the wondrous pipes of this too seldom heard vocalist.Making it onto several “Best Of 1986” composites, Jennifer War-nes’s album brings a degree of tunefulness that is not always present when Lenny sings Lenny, to put it diplomatically.Wonderful performances from session aides such as Stevie Ray Vaughan on “First We Take Manhattan”, suprising appearances by Van Dyke Parks who arranged “A Singer Must Die” and plays synths and accordion on “Came So Far For Beauty ”, or Bill Payne’s arrangements on “Ain’t No Cure For Love”, happily conspire to make this a superb album. Those who have been less than thrilled with Cohen’s own monotone offerings on his own creations will find that Jennifer Warnes and the musicians here give each tune an ambience all its own, shifting moods as easily as poet Cohen slides from image to image. From the country rock of “Coming Back To You” with David Lindley’s lap steel and Freddie Tackett’s guitar, to the aching emotion of the title track, Jennifer Warnes wraps her voice box around these songs in memorable fashion on this sleeper of '86.VIDEO SCREENINGS POLTERGEIST culture clashes, this one features burly Nick Nolle as a happy-go-lucky bum who drops into the Beverly Hills mansion of Richard Dreyfuss and Bette Midler on a low moment as he decides to end it all by a suicidal dip in Dreyfuss’s pool.Upon his rescue.Nolle brings some social insights to the millionaire's family, with next door neighbour Orvis Goodnight, played by rock-ex Little Richard, providing some classic little cameo moments in this funny film. The Sutt&tar tTMvmD CUHKN / ” R : ¦ IM >S RUNAWAY TRAIN (MGM/UA) Of the two Jon Voight films currently in video release, this one is the action-packed, violence-oriented thriller that shows a side of the American actor not often exploited. As Manny, a prison hero because of his defiance of any authority, he escapes from a maximum security institution, and reluctantly takes along as his accomplice a green, young inmate named Buck, played by the very talented newcomer (The Pope of Greenwich Village. The Coca Cola Kid) Eric Roberts. The escapees hop aboard an ill-fated, runaway train and in a forced isolation situation as the train hurtles along.Voight and Roberts find out some interesting truths about their respective oddball characters.Their unsuspecting guest is a young railway worker named Sara, played by Rebecca DeMor-nay.who is a foil to each of these social misfits. For a movie in which not a great deal outside of a basic chase sequence happens.RUNAWAY TRAIN has a remarkable build-up of intensity and features some excessive physical violence.DESERT BLOOM (RCA/COLUMBIA) Voight's other movie is an understated.moody piece about America in 1950.as a family comes to terms with the end of the Second World War.the beginnings of nuclear awareness, and the unfortunate setbacks of the Korean War.• Voight's Jack, married to Lily (Marybeth Williams), is a WWH veteran, haunted by the war and anguish about his wounded leg, who is attempting to be a good stepfather to Lily’s three daughters.Ekeing out a meagre living with his gas station on the outskirts of Las Vegas, as the nuclear community in the nearby desert is building up for some of the fateful early 50’s testing, Voight’s compelling characterization of Jack builds in intensity as Lily’s sister Starr, an eyecatching sexpot.played by Ellen Barkin, comes to stay with the family. As Jack’s alcoholism and delirium worsen, a further complication develops as Lily’s oldest daughter Rose (very adroitly played by newcomer Annabeth Gish ) begins to find herself embroiled in personality conflicts with her brooding step-father.The tensions created by the rumors about the effects of the atomic bomb being detonated in the desert are equally developed within the character played by Voight.as he simmers on the screen, exuding a controlled hostility that threatens to devastate his family at any moment. As if any confirmation were needed.DESERT BLOOM reveals that Jon Voight is an American actor of rare brilliance.(VIDEOS The old man made no reply to this impertinent onslaught but stopped the conversation by resuming his work, while 1 left with a strong desire to give the Maine Law champion a parting kick, but convinced nevertheless that his picture of "ye olden time" was nearest the truth.Whether it be owing to the Maine Law or not I am unable to say, but there is certainly a greater degree of temperance, thrift, general well being and apparent happiness among the people of this State than in any community of the same numbers that I have yet seen.1 recollect hearing Dr.Orestes A.Brownson say several years ago that there was more true Democracy.equality, freedom, general intelligence and happiness in Vermont than in any commonwealth in Christendom.I was tempted to ask him how much of this he attributed to the Protestant religion which he had renounced in favor of Catholic, but the question would have been rather impertinent, and I should have probably got a sharp answer.Dr.Brownson is, I believe, a native of Vermont, and may, therefore.be supposed to be somewhat partial to his birthplace, albeit she is full of what he would call religious heresy, but my observation of the people of this State confirms the truth of the Doctor's statement.1 have been among all classes of people in all parts of the State and nowhere have I seen so much equality in social life, and such general diffusion of property, intelligence and all the comforts of life as here. You can scarcely find a family that does not take one or more daily or weekly papers, and over and over again have 1 found plain farmers living in back towns on the tops of hills, or in secluded valleys far away from the leading routes of travel, who know more about national politics and the public men of the country and even about the local affairs of the State and City of New York than nine-tenths of the men who exercise the right of su (rage on Manhattan Island.PART 111 next week.Television in ’86: Fads faded but Cosby is still king By Bill Anderson The Canadian Press Television has no pride —it will copy anything So in 1986, with the Bill Cosby Show going through the roof, one family show after another rolled off the TV assembly lines.None of the new series really caught on, however, and the star-studded homesteads of Ellen Burstyn, Elliot Gould and Lucille Ball were swept off the air before Christmas.“Sooner or later," wrote U.S.media critic Todd Gitlin, "the mass audience, having gone along with the fad, grows weary, bored, resentful — in its odd way.discriminating."It takes its revenge." NO NEW HITS Try as they might, no network in Canada or the United States could come up with a smash hit, although Sherman Hems ley’s atrocious Amen crept into the Top 10 for NBC and the critics did all they could forCrime Story, the boldest experiment of the fall season.Michael Mann watched his Crime Story, a violent, garish "22-hour movie," struggle in the ratings at the same time his other NBC creation — Miami Vice — went from last year’s hot tamale to this year's cold turkey. In a new time slot opposite J.R.Ewing and cast, Miami’s shimmering peacocks lost some of their strut while Dallas got away with murder by bringing Bobby Ewing back from the dead.Another soap opera unfolded off screen as Joan Rivers had a messy public parting with late-night king Johnny Carson.Rivers's own show opened with a bang but fizzled fast, and Fox Broadcasting’s hopes to launch a "fourth network" suffered with it.HERE'S HEADROOM Still, talk shows were all over the screen in 1986, when TV’s recapture of the baby-boom audience seemed symbolized by the departure of Merv Griffin, the ascendance of David Letterman and the arrival of Max Headroom — the ultimate talking head whose stuttering, Coke-peddling face was created in the fusion of TV and computers. While Max was babbling, Wheel of Fortune’s Vanna White got rich just by turning letters on the game show’s board.Everybody got the message — TV means money — and several cable channels baffled satellite dish owners with new signal-scrambling technologies.New choices and new technologies — especially the booming popularity of video cassette recorders — contributed to a year of political concern about American domination of Canadian TV.CBC, the pillar of Canadian broadcasting, was undermined by federal spending restraints and the corporation's own accounting gaffes.CBC executives warned of dire cuts to Canadian programming in '87, but they were told to stop crying and get on with it by a new, lake-charge approach at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.GATHERED DUST The federal broadcast régula tor began the year waiting — along with everyone else in the industry— for the report of a task force on broadcasting policy. But Marcel Masse was shuffled out as communications minister and Flora MacDonald shuffled in, and by the time the report came out in September it already seemed to be covered in dust. The government urged patience.saying it would rewrite the Broadcasting Act before the next election, but ÇRTC chairman André Bureau was already plunging ahead w ith proposals to move Canadian specialty services on to basic cable in 1987 and create a gaggle of new ones as well.Through it all.TV was increa singly seen as the key to national consciousness. But American author Paul Theroux.in his novel O-Zone.warned of a future society shaped more by pollution, violence and social inequality. For some people in such a world, television only fuels their fantasies of escaping in a rocket Day after day.Theroux wrote, the downtrodden sit before their TV screens "fervent and deluded.always glued to the launch channel.’’ 6—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1986 Artists, Canada: Soap opera, royalties and trad' By Rod Currie The Canadian Press There was an element of soap opera in the continuing saga of Canada's $1.5-billion book-publishing industry in 1986 that set the scene for some drama, glamor and spirited in-fighting in the new year.Jack McClelland, who has been credited with nurturing, encouraging and promoting scores of Canadian authors to become household names, was edged farther from the centre of things. The flamboyant, silver-haired former head of McClelland and Stewart was replaced as publisher by Adrienne Clarkson, the elegant Paris-based diplomat who launched her publishing career with what some thought was rather undiplomatic language. And in the continuing hassles between the federal government and the authors and publishers, the publishing side won a small one and lost a big one.But centre stage in the business was dominated — and will be again in 1987 — by uncertainty over the place of Canadian publishing in continuing Canada-U.S.trade talks.WRITERS SHINE Although the book business was preoccupied in 1986 by boardroom and political manoeuvrings, it was also a year of literary accomplishment— particularly in the unprecedented showing of two Canadian authors in the competition for the esteemed Booker Prize of Britain.Among the six writers on the final short list were Margaret Atwood for The Handmaiden’s Tale and Robertson Davies with What’s Bred in the Bone. The prize — which brings a great upsurge in sales for all finalists — ultimately went to England’s Kingsley Amis, although the Booker judges took the extraordinary step of announcing Davies had come within a hair of winning. In the 34 years that McClelland.64, ran the firm co-founded by his father 80 years ago, he built a glittering stable of Canadian authors, including Margaret Laurence.Irving Layton, Gabrielle Roy, Pierre Berton and Atwood. But he ran into financial difficulties in recent years and sold out in December 1985 to shopping-mall developer Avie Bennett, now the company’s enthusiastic chairman and chief executive officer.FORMERLY ON TV In November, McClelland became "publishing consultant,” and Clarkson, a former TV personality and.since 1982, Ontario’s agent-general in Paris, was named publisher and president. The day after her appointment, Clarkson told a group of school administrators in Toronto: “I’ll be able to run a major cultural institution in the free enterprise field. That’s where I now feel I can affect the greatest change.I 'm going to hire people and fire people.I'm going to do all sorts of stutf and really have fun.” She then flew back to Paris, leaving a staff already jarred by major executive changes in the last year to contemplate her words until she returns in March to take up her new job.WIN BATTLE In the political field, a 20-year battle led by the Writers’ Union of Canada ended in April when Ottawa established a modest $3-million annual fund for “payment for public use,” whereby authors will receive a small fee for use of their books in libraries. In the past, Canadian authors received a set royalty from publishers whether their works were purchased by an individual or a library.Authors of non-fiction and historical works were particularly ill-served by that system since students and others often made use of their works in libraries over and over without additional payment. Now, Canada has joined Australia, Britain, Sweden and other Authors Robertson Davies and Margaret Atwood made unprecedented showings in the competition for the Booker Brize of Britain in 19X6, countries in recognizing that such writers should receive payment for the use of their books in libraries.Although it was a small victory, in that few authors will get more than a couple hundred dollars in such royalties a year, it established a principle on which the authors hope to build in subsequent years.LOST BIG ONE But authors, publishers and opposition politicians lost a big battle despite a spirited — and ongoing — campaign.Ottawa has so far refused to repeal a 10-per-cent tariff on English-language imported books, which is expected to damage sales and cost the industry $30 million annually. The duty was announced last June in a sort of gut-reaction retaliation for the U S.tariff on Canadian shakes and shingles. There is near unanimous agreement outside government that it hit the wrong target, having only a flea-bite effect on the U.S.giants it was aimed at.The trouble is that about 90 per cent of English-language books sold in Canada are imported from the United States and distributed by Canadian outfits. Many Canadian publishers count on these sales —which now are running into buyer resistance because of higher prices — to finance the sometimes less profitable Canadian ventures that amount to less than 20 per cent of the business.GUARD CULTURE Meanwhile, publishers and others in the broader cultural field continue to seek assurances that Canada's cultural integrity will not be placed on the freer-trade negotiating table. The government has stated it stands behind its policy prohibiting foreign takeovers of Canadian publishers unless they are joint ventures with Canadian control — a policy that has riled some U.S.interests.But External Affairs Minister Joe Clark has caused concern by refusing to rule out allowing cultural issues to be negotiated. While protecting companies that require protection, it would be the height of folly, he said, to cut off opportunities for Canadian publishers who see advantages in a negotiated wider access to the lucrative U.S.book and magazine markets. The debate is bound to grow more heated as the trade negotiators get down to specifics in 1987.Top 10 books Here are the week’s Top 10 hardcover analyze his character.“In a way.Spock is an extraordinarily human character,” he said.“He is considered the alien, but there is something about his alien-ness that is extremely human. He is born of a Vulcan father and an Earth mother, which gives him an internal complex of his rational side versus his emotional side.We all experience that.“At some time in our lives, we all think, ‘Gee, I wish I could control my emotions.’ Spock is fighting that battle constantly. So in a way he is a very, very human character.” IN NEW FILM Nimoy and Spock are back for another go-round with the new film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The original Star Trek was a television series that faded from NBC on Sept.2, 1969, and everyone thought the series would soon be forgotten.‘ When we were cancelled at the end of the third season, I thought that was the end of that,” recalled Nimoy, now 55.‘‘I thought that after a year or two of reruns, Star Trek would be history.“But when it went into syndication in the early ’70s, suddenly it started coming back in a gigantic-way.It was really remarkable. It is still remarkable to me.” OLD GANG BACK Star Trek IV stars Nimoy, William Shatner, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei.Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols, the seemingly ageless space travellers, along with a guest star Catherine Hicks. For the second time in a row, Nimoy served as director, a role he admitted was not easy at the start.“I was surprised when I came to direct Star Trek III — I found out eventually in a nice kind of way — that the cast had been a little concerned about how this was going to work,” he said.“I think they were nervous that somehow I wouldn't appreciate their performances or I wouldn’t appreciate their contributions. They weren’t sure how I would be as a director.“We discovered that we all had mutual interests. It was to all of our best interests to enjoy the work, appreciate each other and get a good film made, which we did. When it came time for me to direct Star Trek IV, they were all welcoming the idea. They liked the script, and we all had a good time together.” FIRST IN ’51 Nimoy has been an actor most of his life.Born to Russian-Jcwish immigrants in Boston, he began appearing in community theatres as a teenager. He left a Boston College scholarship in drama to try his luck in California.enrolling at the famed Pasadena Playhouse, llis first film role was in 1951 in Queen tor a Day.“In 1966.when I started Star Trek, I had been in films 15 years.” said the actor, who wears a trimmed, sall-and-pcpper beard in his non Spock life.“1 had been teaching acting classes successfully for several years, and had plans to become a director.I was making a substantial, secure living.“I was a little nervous about going into Star Trek," Nimoy said.“I was pretty serious about the work I was doing, trying to maintain a dignified career. To put on pointed ears was a pretty dangerous thing to do." University of Sherbrooke Cultural Centre, the Loubard on Alexandre St.and La Rose des Sables on King St.W.Movies I just saw Crocodile Dundee for the second time, and still found it enjoyable, so that will have to be my recommendation of the week. It's written by, and stars, Paul Hogan, who plays a rugged crocodile poacher and tour operator in the Australian outback.Linda Kozlowski is a reporter who follows him to where he was allegedly attacked by a crocodile and just barely survived to tell the tale.Wanting a more exciting end to her story about him, she invites him to New York, where he gets his first taste of the city life.Of course there’s some romance involved, and some rivalry with her polished American fiancé, but what's funny is Dundee's reaction to the crowds and the modern conveniences of the city.He wears himself out saying hello to everyone he meets on the street, for example, and hob-knobs with the chauffeurs and busboys.Crocodile Dundee is playing this week and next at the Merrill's Showplace Cinemas in Newport, Vt.This week it’s at 1:40.7:15 and 9:20 today through Thursday and at 1:55, 7:10 and 9:25 Friday through Sunday.Next Monday through Thusday you can see it at 7:25 nightly. Also showing at Merrill’s this week and next is Star Trek IV.in which the intrepid Enterprise crew apparently return to earth to save earthlings from self-destruction or some such thing The times for this show are 1:30, 7 and 9:15 p.m.today through Thursday, 1:45.6:50 and 9:20 Friday through Sunday and 7:15 from Monday to Thursday next week.Until Friday there’s also something called No Mercy at Merrill’s, showing at 9:25 nightly.I'd also advise you to hurry and see Three Amigos which is only at Merrill's until Friday. This is the comedy that stars Steve Marlin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short as silent movie stars of the early 1900s who are called upon to save a Mexican village from a marauding bandit. It’s really not too bad.Three Amigos is showing daily at 1:50 and 7:10.Starting Friday at Merrill's is Children of a Lesser God This is the story of a teacher (William Hurt) who wants to try some unconventional methods in a school for the deaf, but along the way falls in love with the deaf janitor and tries to get her to come out of her shell and leave behind the bitterness that has imprisoned her for years.I’ve heard conflicting reports on this one; some thought it was great, others so-so.Children of a Lesser God plays Friday through Sunday at 1:45,6:50 and 9:20 and Monday through Thursday at 7:15 p.m.Now all of the above is fairly inaccessible to Sherbrooke and area dwellers, so for you we have The Golden Child and Wisdom at the Cinémas Carrefour. The Golden Child stars Eddy Murphy as a Los Angeles social worker who gets entangled in a mission to rescue a child with magical powers who has been kidnapped by forces of evil. This movie is showing at 1.3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m.daily now through Jan.8.Wisdom, showing at 1:15, 3:15, 5:15, 7:15 and 9:15 until Jan.8.stars Emilio Estevez and Demi Moore, and that’s about all I can tell you about it.The Cinéma Capitol in Sherbrooke still has the French film Les Fous de Bassan.based on the novel by Anne Hébert. This will be showing nightly at 7 and 9 and Sunday and Tuesday at 1 p.m.as well at least until the end of next week.At the Cinema Princess in Cowansville the same two movies continue until Jan.8, but take note that the theatre is closed today and tomorrow.Other than those holidays, Runaway Train will be playing nightly at 7:15 and Star Trek IV at 9:05.Star Trek IV is described — well, sort of— above.Runaway Train stars Jon Voight and Flric Roberts as two escaped prisoners who find themselves alone on a freight train hurtling out of control when the engineer dies of a stroke. It's been called a combination of existentialist drama and cliff-hanging action, and the critics seem to like it a lot.Watch out for the few gory scenes like when Voight gets his hand caught between two of the train cars.Sherbrooke's repertory theatre.La Maison du Cinéma, has Sting — Bring on the Night at 7 p.m.Jan.6,7.and 8.This is a musical documentary in which Sting breaks out from the rock mold of the group The Police, gathers together some high calibre jazz musicians and explores the possibilities of collective creation. 10—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1986 Travel *¦___ ifecara Alice combines color and contradictions of Australia ALICE SPRINGS, Australia — Alice Springs sits bull’s-eye, dead centre in this vast island-continent, smack in the middle of the desert. The entire state of the Northern Territory, all 1,346,200 square kilometres of it.is home to less than three-quarters of one per cent of Australia’s population.Settled originally as a supply dump and repeater station for the Overland Telegraph in the early 1870s, Alice Springs had two precious commodities — a small water hole, after which the town was named, and the Todd River.Alice, as the town is affectionately known, was named after the wife of Sir Charles Todd, then South Australia’s superintendent of telegraphy.Completion of that telegraph link in 1872 cut communication time between Adelaide and Mother England from several months to just seven hours.Back in 1903, with its entire female population at seven, Alice was sleeping sounder than a fairytale princess. What roused her was no prince on a white charger but a cross-country iron horse railroad and the discovery of gold and other minerals in the outback.ALICE SPRINGS AUSTRALIA 0 MM» 800 Sydney After the bombing of Darwin during World War II, the territorial administration moved here. Then Nevil Shute’s novel “A Town Like Alice,,” and the subsequent “Masterpiece Theatre” television series, brought world attention to this remote area. That combined with the town’s proximity to Ayers Rock, one of Australia's natural wonders, now brings half a million people here each year, making tourism the largest industry.Alice combines the delightful government administrative services. The average age of the population is 35.Most residents live comfortably in low, modern ranch-style homes, topped with solar collectors.HIGH GROWTH RATE Alice now thrives with a population of 22,000 and an annual growth rate of seven percent — one of the highest in the country. It may be stretching the point to call Alice Springs the New York City of the outback, but then there’s no town around to challenge it.Alice now even boasts its very own single set of traffic lights! From the air, the uncompromising parched red sand is interrupted by the Macdonnell Ranges, a string of jagged mountains that from the air resemble the half-buried backbone of some gigantic prehistoric creature.Alice nests at the foot of the Macdonnells, flat, dusty, and spreading.Strict zoning laws keep buildings no higher than three storeys. The surrounding desert supports a surprising number of feral animals.both indigenous and imported.Kangaroos in a variety of species abound along with parrots, cockatoos, lizards, five-foot flightless emus, australia’s native dog — the dingo — and British-introduced rabbits.Camels were imported from Afghanistan during the last century.with their Afghan cameleers. They helped build this town and were indispensable in the exploration of the outback. All these animals compete for food, if not space, with great tended herds of cattle in the centre and water buffalo north in Darwin.UBIQUITOUS TOYOTA Although camels once provided most of the pulling and hauling, they have largely been driven off the road by the ubiquitous Toyota four-wheel-drive vehicles — almost standard equipment here. There is still a Camel Farm and museum on Emily Gap Road, where some 30 dromedaries are available to rock-and-roll tourists about for a small fee.Sports are eagerly pursued here even though summer days can get hotter than a tin of Billy tea.Basketball, rugby, netball, and football are popular.A superb 18-hole golf course opened recently.Lack of public transportation makes cycling almost mandatory.Soaring is available — and even scuba diving."It’s becoming quite popular." a ruddy-faced salesman in a sporting goods store confirmed."We have some water holes over 50 feet deep." PRACTICAL INFORMATION: Alice Springs can be reached by air from most major cities in Australia, and by rail from Adelaide.Sydney, Brisbane, and Darwin. Most people combine their visit here with a trip to Ayers Rock.Touring coaches offer a variety of trips.Prices depend on the degree of comfort — or discomfort —- you are willing to endure. And, of course, you can explore the outback by four-wheel-drive vehicle. For more information, contact the Australian Tourist Commission, 489 Fifth Avenue, New York, N Y.10017; 1212) 687-6300.In California write A.T.C., 3500 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif.90011); (213) 380-6060.Kangaroos bounce along the street as you make your way to Alice's Kmart.Flocks of pink and gray galah cockatoos squawk overhead as you cycle off to the local Piggly-Wiggly Supermarket. You may even have to double-park beside a camel when you “pick up a bucket” at Kentucky Fried Chicken.4 3!(fî Tourists saddle up for a bumpy trip at a camel farm in Alice Springs, Australia. there to confide their troubled thoughts. At the head ot the couch is a tub chair, in a dark green velvet, where Freud would sit and listen. The house at 20 Maresfield Gardens was a refuge for Freud in 1938 when he fled at the age of 82 with his family from the Nazis in Vienna.By paying a so-called “fugitive tax" to the German authorities, he was permitted to ship his library, letters, furniture and collection of antiquities to England. There, ensconced with his favorite things arranged as they had been in Vienna, he died on Sept.23 the following year.GUARDED WORK For more than 40 years thereafter.Anna Freud, the youngest of his six children and a psychoanalyst who guarded his work and legend, stayed on in the home. After her death in 1982, as she had planned.the house became the property of an English charitable trust to be run as a museum.Canadian curator David Newlands makes it clear that turning Freud’s last home into a fitting museum was a race against time — and a major effort to repair its ravages.“We had four months maximum Paris computer facilities outstrip North America’s By Norma Siddiqui Suprisingly, modern computer facilities in Paris far outstrip anything available in North America and are more unfamiliar to a visitor than the historic landmarks of Paris.1 he mosaic ol great masterpieces in Paris never ceases to awe the tourist, and its landmarks, so familiar from posters and pictures are more inspiring in real life.Still, this historic architecture full of arches, domes, turrets, balustrades, fluted columns, stained glass, flying buttresses, all richly interspersed with sculpture is somewhat familiar. Not so the modern computer facilities which today’s Parisien now takes for granted. The municipal government has constructed a network of electronic billboards at a cost of over $50,000 apiece, strategically placed throughout the city. These give up-to-date information of happenings ol interest to tourist and Parisien alike. Also available are “Situ” machines on which any person may type his destination and receive printed output of the best route according to one of four choices: the quickest, the least walking, metro only, or bus only.Another useful computer aid to the traveller is the “Bison Fuité”, or "Smart Buffalo" available at strategic points along the autoroutes. These provide routing from points A to B by major highways and alternate routes which are more scenic. In addition to these computer facilities Paris also has those facilities to which the North American is more familiar. That is, many hotels and shops have electronic cash registers connected to centralized computing facilities. The use of credit cards is linked to the system and t he customer has only to sign the cash tape which is in duplicate to record a credit card sale. One copy is given to the client, the other is kept by the store. This saves the time required to make an extra credit card slip and reduces the frustration of others waiting in line to make cash purchases.Train reservations are also centrally computerized and printed. As in Canada, computers calculate long distance telephone charges according to time and distance called. In Paris, as well as the rest of France, local calls are also charged according to length of call.To make calling from phone booths easier, in addition to depositing coins the caller can buy a long distance calling card with a mini-magnetic disk tor about $20.This entitles the caller to use the card for up to .$20 of calls. Each time the card is used the magnetic disk is updated to the value of calls left until the amount falls to zero. Then a new card must be purchased. This avoids the tedious requirement for change to make calls.Suprisingly, monthly bills give only the total charge, and rumor has it that itemized billing has not been passed in parliament in order to protect the privacy of calls made to one's mistress.Considering the sophistication of government computing facilities it is hard to imagine another explanation. All in all.a visit to France’s city of antiquities was more than a little amazing.Norma Siddiqui is a frcc-lance writer from Lennoxville who recently-spent some time in Paris.to create a museum” and meet the deadline for opening ceremonies, said Newlands. The restored neo-Georgian house in London’s Hampstead district opened formally in late July.Hundreds of books line the walls in the ground-floor study, many of them in English.Freud’s fascination with the past is evident in the several dozen antique figurines standing on his desk — part of the 2,500-piece collection of Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian and Assyrian statuary he began assembling as a young man.Hundreds more are in glass-fronted cabinets.A garden is glimpsed through the glass doors, flanked by heavy ma- roon curtains, at one end of the room. There is a restful sense here and one can imagine the solace it gave Freud as he passed his final months, sick with cancer of the jaw, in the safety of his English exile. An adjacent dining room now holds several pieces of gaily painted Austrian peasant furniture, but not all the original furniture from the house was in good enough condition to go on display.Newlands, who worked from 1973 to 1982 at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and then at the University of Toronto teaching museum studies, believes his curatorial experience was considered more important for his present job than a scholar’s knowledge of psychoanalytical history.“I'm interested in presenting an accurate history of Freud,” Newlands said in his modern office atop the museum, leaning over a computer terminal which the staff is using to record the thousands of artifacts and documents the house contains.“The purpose of the museum is not to justify or defend his viewpoints.Freud can defend himself quite adequately if people are prepared to read and study him." Much remains for Newlands and his staff, numbering about 20, to do.January Values Dominican Republic Airfare only to Santo Domingo from Montreal Jan.2,9,16 from $429 Puerto Plata- Montemar Jan 4,11,18 1 wk from $639 Santo Domingo- Playa Real 1 wk from $589 Puerto Plata - Caracol - INCLUDES 2 MEALS DAILY 1 wk from ¦ $699 Venezuela Airfare only to Margarita or Puerto Piritu from Montreal Jan.4,11, 18 from $499 Margarita- Juan el Griego (1 bdrm.apt., 4 sharing) Puerto Piritu - i wk from Casacoima $599 1 wk from 1 $5991 Curacao Airfare only from Montreal Jan.4,11 from $529 Las Palmas 2 bedroom villa (4 sharing) i wk from Las Palmas SCAA room (2 sharing) 1 wk from 1 $699 J Vacation packages include return airfare, transfers, baggage handling, accommodation as selected and services of a destination representative. With every purchase of Voyageur Travel Insurance RECEIVE OUR COMPLIMENTARY TRAVEL GUARANTEE Default protection.and more.exclusively at Sears Travel Service MircABEliC-KAA ^ holiday maker Carrefour de l’Estrie 821-4204 PROTECT YOUR VACATION WITH VOYAGEUR TRAVL!.DURANCE-WE RECOMMEND IT!
