The RECORD—Thursday, December 19, 1991—B3 Book sheds light on women’s role in farming Rv Çharrm .-____________________ By Sharon McCully SUTTON — Elizabeth Côté didn’t grow up on a farm, but she grew up a woman. Her recently published book on farm women sheds new light on the role of women who spend their lives toiling on the family farm, frequently without recognition, and rarely with compensation.“Things are finally beginning to change,” says Côté, an Aber-corn writer and publisher.“Farm women are beginning to get the recognition they deserve.” Côté’s book is a collection of some 20 perspectives and testimonials from those closest to the issue, from farm women to lawyers and sociologists.FATE Côté became interested in the issue of farm women when she worked with a farm magazine in Bedford.“I didn’t grow up on a farm. But fate brings us into different milieus and for me it was farming,” Côté said.“After reading 10 years of copy from agricultural magazines, suddenly I had a flash: where are the women? There was an absence of women in all the writings,” she said.Côté said she assembled a group of people three years ago in the hope of shedding light on the role played by a small but dynamic group of women who work on the farm.“I’ve never been a militant feminist,” Côté says.“But I believe there should be some equity in the things we do.” She points out that women are responsible for 90 per cent of all agricultural production in Third World countries.WOMEN’S ROLE In Quebec and Canada, women play a different, but equally important role in farming, she says. They often keep the books, feed the farm workers, look after marketing, and w'ork side by side with men.Only recently has this been recognized in the laws and policies of Quebec and Canada, she adds.“It used to be taken for granted in the past that the family farm is handed down from father to son. This is changing now thanks to a new government program which counsels farmers who w'ant to transfer their farms to either 94 of The Shack BE YOURSELF.SWATCH YOURSELF !” by swatch:: Goldsmith: David N.Dawes 23 years service Member CJA Interest-free payment plan available 37 Lakeside Rnowlton, Q.uébec (514) 243-5128 their sons or daughters.” “Women tend to pay more attention to the environmental aspects of farming,” Côté said.“They are the feminine soul of the farm movement.” QUALITY OF LIFE The book focuses on the quality of life of farm women and the problems encountered by those living in remote regions.La Recherche du Matri-moine also describes the difficulty faced by women when they apply for credit from farm credit bureaus.“Let’s face it, farming is seen as a man’s occupation, and most farm credit managers are men,” she said. But the book also has it’s success stories and earthy tales which leave the reader with a warm glow.Côté said she decided to publish the book herself rather than go the route of an established publisher.“After all, that’s what the book is all about.Women doing it on their owm.” La Recherche du Matri-moine is available in French from Elizabeth Côté at Box 693, Sutton, 538-0870 for $24.50 $2, Writer Elizabeth Côté says women pay more attention to the environmental aspects of farming.ki mKi> mi \k< >s nkci in SOQ 95 mth *29' s29 - Rental 600 Maple, Sutton ?G.S.SKI SHOP APPLICABLE ON A TUNE-UP Generous parishioners built St-Aidan’s church Two branches of the South Eastern Railway met at a small settlement in Sutton Township and this station is named Sutton Junction.Over the years it has been refered to as Emerson’s or Drummond-ville Junction. At one time it was known as "Enlaugra", which is a combination of the first letters of the names of the three daughters of a railway official (Enid, Laura and Grace). The people of this area were originally included in the parish of Sutton but in 1902 the Synod of the Diocese of Montreal divided the parish and Sutton Junction became a part of the mission of Brome. In 1910, the Brome Vestry accepted the addition of Sutton Junction to the Parish of Brome but it was not until 1917 that a decree was passed by the Synod of Montreal legally adding St.Aidan’s district to Brome. This was signed by Bishop J.C.Farthing — Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Montreal. The present white clapboard church called St.Aidan’s was built in 1908 at a cost of $1400 of which $900 was raised by the congregation of thirty people. It was the achievement of the late Rev.E.P.Judge, incumbent at Brome, whose enthusiasm was supported wholeheartedly by the congregation and outside friends. The lot was given by Mr.N.P.Emerson and construction was by Levi Noyes. The cornerstone was laid on May 22, 1908 in the presence of the following clergy: The Venerable Archdeacon Davidson, Rev.James Carmichael, Rev.H.Plaisted, Rev.J.IL Bell.Rev.William Garner and Rev.E.P.Judge, with the congregation witnessing the ceremony. The opening service was held on Dec.17, 1908 when the Rev.Henry Plaisted was the guest speaker. The Rural Dean, the Rev.J.S.Carmichael of Knowl-ton.the Reverends W.P.R.Lewis of Cowansville, J.IL Bell of Sutton, G.A.Mason of Iron Hill and the incumbent, E.P.Judge were also present. The church was consecrated by the Right Reverend J.C.Farthing on May 7, 1909 with Rev.Canon Carmichael, Rev.F.A.Pratt, Rev.J.W.Martin and the Rev.E.P.Judge assisting the Bishop. This was the first church to be consecrated by Bishop Farthing and the first dedicated by him to the Irish missionary who ministered to the north of England. The font of Caen stone was given by Miss Mary A.Luding-ton as a memorial to Cataline Judge.A triple sectioned stained glass window is installed above the white painted altar with its gold lettered inscription of Holy, Holy, Holy and the gold cross carved in relief on the front of it.The Altar and Reredos were a gift from Canon W.P.R.Lewis and the people of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Cowansville. The congregation of All Saints in Dunham and their Rector, Rev.H.Plaisted, gave the Bi- ble lectern and chandeliers. The 300-pound bell of St.Aidans came from Shore Bell Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland, and cost $100 which was paid for by the Guild in 1910.Other gifts include the communion vessels which were bought with the proceeds of the sale of a lot of land near Knowl-ton presented by R.H.Buchanan in memory of George Capel of Montreal.Lumber was donated by Miss Hattie Westover and with this a beautiful wood pulpit and hymn board were built by Arthur Todd. The prayer desk and communion rail of wood were made by Jay Crandall of Sutton Junction. The organ was donated by Mrs.M.G.Safford and the family of the late Dr.and Mrs.Hamilton.Over the years organists — Mrs.P.H.Legal-lais, MissH.Westover, Mrs.A.Westover, Miss S.Emerson, Mrs.Velma Smith and Mr.O.H.Barrett have supplied the music for worship. The con gregation extends a special recognition and appreciation to Mrs.Velma Smith, the present organist, who has served so conscientiously for so many years.Mr.Judge was rector until 1914 when he was followed by the Rev.William G.Walsh, 1914-1918.James Kenworthy, 1918-1919.Joseph Irving, 1919-1926 until the Rev.F.W.Gedye arrived in 1926.The year 1951 marked the 25th anniversary of the Rev.F.W.Gedye’s ministry in Canada and he also celebrated his 70th birthday at this time.A party was held in his honor and some 200 parishioners and neighbouring clergy attended.Born in London.England in 1881, he graduated from St.Augustine’s College in Canterbury in 1902, was ordained a deacon at St.Paul’s Cathedral, Calcutta in 1904 and priest at Christ Church.Gauhati, Assam in 1906.He was assistant missionary in Tezpur, Assam from 1904 to 1910 and assistant curate of St.Mary Magdalene, Torquay, Devon, England from 1910-1912.Mr.Gedye came to Canada in 1912 and was in charge of missions at Bristol, Campbell’s Bay, Eardley and Cartierville, before coming to Brome in 1926.He served this parish until 1959, was rural dean of Brome and Shefford from 1930-1940 and was elevated to Canon in 1958.See next page BOOKBINDING and MARBLING • Custom Binding • Repairs and Restoration • Unique.Hand-BOund Blank Books in Cloth or Leather • Hand-Marbled Envelopes, Cards.Tags.Boxes • All One-Of-A-Kind • MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS S.Cole & M.Taylor 538-0858 (by appt.)
