Steam Exhibits $1.00 FRIDAY NIGHT Retro Dance - music by Disconnexion SATURDAY NIGHT Variety Show at Haskell Opera House 7:30 — $5.00 per person; $10 per family FEATURING Pal Hurley — Dave Donnachie Im Brise Tickets available for all events at 33 Main Street, Rock Island, Que.819-876-2080 swoosh silently by; steamboats toot their steam whistles on beautiful Lake Memphremagog; and clouds of steam hover above the stationary equipment displays.People will be coming from as far away as California and from as near as just down the road. This event is unique in North America on two counts — it is the only meet which welcomes all steam disciplines (car, boat and stationary) and the only international one.ON THE WATER Lake Memphremagog is an international lake, stretching 27 miles from Magog to Newport, Vt.Spectators may take a cruise the length of the lake and back on Saturday, May 23.The Aventure II leaves Magog at 8 a m.and it will join the steamboats and classic wooden boats which will be sailing from the Cedarville Whart in Canada to Newport.Boat tickets are $15.During the layover in Newport, passengers may want to go to The Landing restaurant tor their steam brunch at $13.They will also enjoy catching a glimpse of the Memphremagog Yacht Club’s opening regatta on their cruise home.Meanwhile, back in Rock Island, more than 10,000 people are expected to view the colorful and festive stationary exhibits, whick will include lots of steam and whistles and engines of all kinds.A gigantic sale of arts, crafts, food, coins and stamps, antiques and everything imaginable — even jewellery steam cleaning — will also be going on both Saturday and Sunday.Barbecue chicken and beef, fresh corn, beer and wine will be available all weekend. The cost to see all this is $1.ENTERTAINMENT The steam meet opens tonight with a reception given by local mayors from 5 to 7 p.m.by invitation in the bigtop, followed by a retro dance with all the old 50s and 60s favorites at $2.50 per person.Saturday night there will be a variety show in the Haskell Opera House ($5, $10 per family). The Haskell, an Edwardian building modelled on a former Boston opera house, is built right on the border. The audience sits in the United States, while the performers are in Canada. Also on Saturday night there will be a bonfire for the young in years and in heart. The Rainbow Cloggers, a very popular clog-dancing group of adults and children, will entertain Sunday at noon and again at 3:30 STEAM EVENTS Sunday is the day for steamcars.A parade of steam cars, antique cars and horses will form in Derby Line, Vt.at noon, to be led by a firetruck across the border into Canada. Then steamcars will compete to see how slowly they can go.The winner of the slo-race is the loser, in a manner of speaking.Steamers can go slower than regular internal combustion cars and like to show off. They also like to show off their pickup in the hill climb, where speed is of the essence. While the steamers do make excellent time, the most amazing thing is the lack of sound as they swoosh gracefully up the hill. The Steam Meet is sponsored by Heritage Technologies, a community non-profit group devoted to the preservation of old-style small industry.Information on the Steam Meet and tickets are available from Heritage Technologies, 33 Main St.in Rock Island, or by calling (819) 876-2080.Arts and crafts sale doubles in size ROCK ISLAND — They’re calling a giant arts and crafts sale, and they’re not kidding.Last year the sale, going on as part of the Steam Meet events this weekend, consisted of 75 tables of arts, crafts and other items, and attracted about 7,500 people. This year it has grown too large for the Sunnyside school’s gymnsium. This year the sale boasts 150 tables which will not only fill the gymnasium and the basement of the school, but also line the halls and spread out into the yard under a large auction tent.“It certainly has picked up,” says Allen Nourse, co-ordinator of the show.“We re expecting 10,000 people this year.” Last year, says Nourse, 2500 people visited the show on the Saturday, when many other events of the weekend were rained out.The goal of the organizers, he says, was to get as wide a variety as possible of craftspeople, antique dealers, businesses, cultural organizations and others to display their wares. The result is exhibitors from 45 different communities showing such crafts as woodworking, doll furniture, hanging flower baskets, beadwork, leather, quilts and other fancy work, granite sculptures and jewellery, ceramics, pressed flowers, wooden toys, Cabbage Patch Doll’s clothes and liquid embroidery.Eight antique dealers from various part of the Townships will also be exhibiting, as well as people who do furniture upholstering and gold and silver jewellery cleaning.Several local painters are scheduled to show their work at the show, as well. There will be people there selling Watkins and Raleigh products, as well as office supplies, chain saws, lawn mowers and circular saws.Other tables will hand out information on such organizations as the Piggery Theatre, the Towns-hippers’ Association, the Townships Sun newspaper, the Three Villages tourism committee and the Society for the Protection of Animals. It would not be wise to visit the show on an empty stomach either, because of a tempting array of baked goods, candy and snacks on sale.A barbecue of beef and chicken will go on throughout the two days on the school grounds.“It certainly will be one of the largest sales in the area,” says Nourse. The Giant Sale goes on from 11 a.m.to 7 p.m.Saturday and 11 a.m.to 5 p.m.Sunday.There’s a $1 admission charge which also permits access to the display of stationary steam equipment and flee market tables on the grounds. The school is at 100 Main St.in Rock Island. In the eye of the beholder Beauty at any age is as much as a state of mind as a look. The way you see yourself has a lot to do with the way you in Georgeville) while the women work out in a gymnasium while discussing their sexual preferences.A well-made film, reminiscent of The Big Chill in style, but the endless, one-track conversation becomes a tad boring.Directed by Denys Arcand, this stars Dominique Michel, Dorothée Berryman, Rémy Girard and Pierre Curzi.Adolescent anxiety and conflict provide the drama in the Alexander Galt student play, Curtain Going Up!, being performed tonight and Saturday night.See Theatre column. 10—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MAY 22, 1987 Practical and picturesque exist together in Holland By Ellen Steese The Christian Science Monitor GIETHOORN, Netherlands — It’s an otherworldly feeling to drive through green fields and realize that, by rights, you ought to be underwater.Water — too much of it — is a constant theme wherever you go in the Netherlands. That’s true whether you are excitedly hunting for signs of old Holland (windmills and canals) or passing through new Holland’s polders (sea bottom transformed into fields or grazing cattle and planned cities).I was on the lookout for quaintness, so my tour plan included the funny little towns of Giethoorn and Urk on the west side of this small country, and the Zuiderzeemu-seum, where one goes to see exhibits on local architecture, a few hours north of Amsterdam. But in the Netherlands, the practical and the picturesque exist together.New Holland keeps intruding. The ways, old and new, that the Dutch cope with their low country turned out to be a recurring motif in my journey. Thus, the highlight of Giethoorn (“HEET-horn”) is its canals. That’s why you must stop at the tourist board (look for the sign that says VVV) as soon as you arrive, because you can’t see much of Giethoorn from the road.IN ANOTHER WORLD If you park your car in the VVV lot, you can pick up a map and head across the street to a paved path leading through a soggy field. If you follow it, wondering where on earth you’re going, you’ll see a small bridge on your left. When you go over it, you are in another world.A small canal of brownish water, some 12 feet wide, forms the main street of Giethoorn. All travel here is done by boat.Mail is delivered, cows go to and from pasture, harvests are brought in, and families go to church on the canal.Trees and wooden bridges arch over it.mm & ! * Small house on a canal near the Netherlands town of Giethoorn.Only a footpath borders it on each side. The houses are like those in “Alice in Wonderland” illustrations. They’re brick, have a rounded sloping shape, and are neatly thatched. Each is set back a few feet from the footpath, has dark green doors, and, of course — this being Holland — plants and tiers of white lace adorn their windows. Also compulsory is an intensely colorful postage-stamp garden.I walked along, sniffing aromas of apples and wood fires. There wasn’t a car in sight; if there were any, they must have been tactfully concealed behind barns.COWS POSED It was a gray day, and some hefty white ducks were enjoying the canal and the weather.Goats and cows posed in the fields in the distance.Once in a while a flaxenhaired child would whiz by on a bi- At the Carrefour de showing visitors around in the summer were clustered in quiet side canals, indicating that tourists by the busload are not unknown here.I recommend a chill, gray, autumn day, when the only sounds are rustling yellow leaves and an occasional sharp bell of a bike behind you. Then Giethoorn is a fairytale land you have almost to yourself. After you leave Giethoorn for the old fishing village of Urk, you’re in polder country.Towering waterco-lor-gray clouds press down on green fields.Substantial brown barns cozy into the landscape. The horizon is about the same, left and right, fore and aft.The Dutch are sensitive to minuscule changes of altitude, emphasizing to the visitor variations that would pass unnoticed elsewhere. The reason is that a few feet here is the difference between being above water or below it.SUSPENDED IN AIR Now on a modest rise in the Noord Dost polder, Urk was originally an island in the Zuider Zee.It isn’t a particularly pretty town. Its tiny brick row houses of fairly recent vintage give it a look of being suspended in air.Tourists go to Urk because a few of its people still cling stubbornly to the quaint costumes of their former isolation as an island in the Zuider Zee.You see elderly women, and a few men, wearing peasant outfits. The women’s costume is a black dress, gathered at the wait, worn with a vest of shiny green or blue. Most distinctive is the hat, a small black-and-white, close-fitting bonnet rimmed with lace.Underneath and showing through is a silver band with hair rolled around it; this ends in big silver prongs that press into the cheeks. The men wear black pants that blouse around the hips and stop well above the ankles, a shirt with wide red and white stripes, and a BUS TOURS Pennsylvania tour From September 6th to September assiduous snooping while trying to look inconspicuous — including checking out the Saturday morning market, surely a prime spot — I saw a total of tour men and 11 women dressed this way.PIQUE CURIOSITY Polders may not look very exciting, but they do pique your curiosity. On my way to Enkhuizen, 1 made an unscheduled stop at the Museum Nieuw Land in Lelystad. Here the slide show “From Fle-vomeer to Flevoland” can be heard in English on request. It is a good wrap-up of the history of the polders. You learn that in the 19th century the steam engine replaced the windmill, and for the first time it became possible to take land back from the ocean. The Dutch put a dike across the old Zuider Zee (renamed the Ijsselmeer in honor of its new status). Then they built other dikes along the edge and began draining. This not only created new land, but protected the old seashore from the disastrous floods that were a problem in places like Urk.You can learn all sorts of things about polders at the museum : how to build a polder dike with layers of sand, boulders, clay, and brushwood mattresses; how to make the land usable after it has been drained, leaving flats of dead, soft, bluish, impassable mud. There's a bit about the objects they found after the land was drained: crashed World War II aircraft and the remains of 300 shipwrecks. After the museum visit, it is interesting to traverse the dike that crosses the Ijsselmeer from Lelystad to Enkhuizen. The water is gray and smooth on one side, rough and blue on other.FISHING TOWNS The open-air Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen was opened in 1983 to immortalize the little fishing towns that ringed the Zuider Zee before they became landlocked by polde-rization.Each section of this “museum village” consists of 130 buildings from 20 Zuider Zee towns. You get to the museum by boat, which enables you to view Enkhuizen from the water — reminding one of a Dutch plate scene. You can also admire the sailboats on the bay, with their huge brown gaff-rigged sails and round, cloglike fronts. The Zuiderzeemuseum is so delightful, you wish you could have toured Holland when it all looked like this.Practical information: Driving in Holland is easy.Even in the smallest towns the roads are excellent and clearly labeled. The Zuiderzeemuseum has a small indoor section, open all year except for January and the first half of February.Hours are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m.on Sunday. The outdoor museum is open April 15 to Oct.15, seven days a week, from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.Admission price: adults $3.35, children $2.65. Evangeline statue tells tragic TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.MAY 22.1987—11 tale of Acadian expulsion , ««Ml The statue of Evangeline and the Acadian Memorial Chapel dominate the grounds of Grand Pre National Historic Park on Nova Scotia’s scenic Evangeline Trail.(Nova Scotia Tourism Photo) GRAND PRE, Nova Scotia — The face of the statue of “Evangeline" in Nova Scotia’s Grand Pre National Historic Park ages and changes before the visitor's eyes.Whether by design or by chance, the heroine of Longfellow's famous poem about the Acadian lovers undergoes an unusual and remarkable facial transformation before the eyes of tens of thousands who annually visit this memorial to the Acadian people, in the heart of the province’s beautiful Annapolis Valley. As the visitor moves from one side of the bronze status to the other, the serene, youthful, smiling face ages and changes subtly but distinctly into a tragic picture of an older and tormented woman crying for a lost lover and a lost land.More than anything else in this 14-acre park, the statue of Evangeline vividly recalls the Acadian settlement and their tragic expulsion from this historic area more than two and a quarter centuries ago.Their story began with the arrival of Champlain at Port Royal where in 1604 he founded the first permanent European settlement in North America north of Florida. They walked slowly back and forth in front of her, watching her youthful smile of happy life and memories change into an aged frown of lament for the loss of her land and her lover who was separated from her during the expulsion.MOVED UP BAY Many of the settlers of Port Royal moved up the Bay of Fundy to Chignecto in the 1670s and to Minas Basin in the 1680s.By the beginning of the 18th century, Minas was the most heavily populated area in the French colony, and the largest settlement was at Grand Pre.Here, the community reclaimed extensive tidal marshlands by means of earthen dykes which they built to shut out the sea from the upper reaches of the salt meadows. The reclaimed land produced abundant harvests of grain without fertilization, and surplusses were shipped legally down the Bay of Fundy to Port Royal and other French colonies, and illegally to New England Colonies. But succeeding struggles between France and Britain for supremacy in this land — Acadia — placed Acadians in a precarious and awkward position between the opposing military forces. In 1704, invading New England troops virtually destroyed the village of Grand Pre, and nine years later the whole of Acadia was ceded to Great Britain by the Treaty of Utrecht.Acadia became Nova Scotia, and Port Royal was renamed Annapolis Royal. The new government required all Acadians to take an oath of allegiance to the British Crown, but in fact the requirement was never enforced until 1730 when they did so but only on the verbal assurance that they would not have to fight if England and France went to war.ENTANGLED IN BATTLE Before long, however, Britain and France were entangled in battle once again, and in 1747 a surprise French attack destroyed a New England force housed at Grand Pre.By 1755.the size and uncertain loyalties of the Acadian presence became a deep concern to colonial officials and a decision was made to expel all Acadians refusing to swear an oath of unqualified allegiance to the British Crown. The Acadians refused to comply, and between 1755 and 1763 some 7,000 to 10,000 were deported, including 2,200 residents of Minas, families were broken up and relatives and friends separated, some of them forever. As a final indignity, the Minas settlement was put to the torch, leaving little trace of 75 years of settlement. Some Acadians eluded deportation, and others managed to return, but not to their former lands at Minas.Over the next century and a half, the site of the Acadian Saint-Charles Church at Grand Pre became quiet pastureland, until 1907 when poet and historian John Frederic Herbin bought the property for a park in memory of the Aca-deians.his mother’s people. He erected a stone cross to mark the old church cemetery, using stones from old Acadian foundations. In 1917, the property was sold to the Dominion Atlantic Railway and the DAR landscaped the park and commissioned a statue of Evangeline from Canadian sculptors Philippe and Henri Hebert, which was unveiled in 1920.BUILT CHURCH The DAR deeded the church site to the Acadian “la Société Nationale l'Assomption,” and in 1922 descendants of deported Acadians across North America contributed to a fund to build a memorial church on the site, modelled on churches of the Norman style. Two years later, Acadians erected an iron cross near the deportation site. The federal government acquired the park in 1957 and declared it a national historic park in 1961.One hundred thousand visitors came to Grand Pre National Historic Park in 1985, to wander its grounds, toss coins down the two and a quarter-century-old “Evangeline’s Well,” gaze at a bust of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, visit the memorial church, and stand in nostalgic silence before the bronze statue of Evangeline. They walked slowly back and forth in front of her, watching her youthful smile of happy life and memories change into an aged frown of lament for the loss of her land and her lover who was separated from her during the expulsion The admission-free park grounds are open year-round, the buildings from mid-May to mid-October.Article submitted by Nova Scotia Tourism.Q: WHERE IS JACKIE?A: With VOYAGES ESCAPADE INC./ AMERICAN EXPRESS Voyages Escapade Inc.AT 121 Frontenac promote wild boar By Laurel Sherrer COMPTON — Feeling beared?Want a chance to go hog-wild with fireworks, games and shows for young and old alike? How 'bout a chance to pig out on an exotic type of meat produced right here in the Townships? You’ll have your chance to do all these things the weekend of July 10, 11 and 12 when the Festival du Sanglier (Wild Boar Festival) takes place at the Domaine St.Laurent in Compton. The festival is the brain-child of Normand Leblanc, a St-Edwidge farmer who has been raising wild boars for the past year and a half. The idea was partly to have a festival that would bring people to the region, but would also promote wild boar meat, he says.HAS UNIQUE FLAVOR Many people have been told they were eating wild boar in restaurants, he says, only to be disappointed because the meat tastes CRUISE INTO SUMMER with a boat from DORAL Featuring special savings on boats powered by Mercruiser.“The world’s best selling stern drive.” Designed to perform.15 need to be taught to appreciate. It makes him angry, he says, to have people fooled into thinking they’re eating the real thing when it’s not purebred wild boar.He hopes the festival will introduce a lot of people to high quality wild boar.L! i Guy St.Laurent.Interest is high.r.Leblanc says he's the only person in the province to raise purebred wild boars.During the festival weekend people will be able to visit Leblanc’s 115-acre farm and see how the 300 boars are raised. They will also have a chance to taste the meat of the wild boar cooked in a variety of ways, to find out what sets it apart from pork. This is not the first year for the festival, but other years it has occurred on a smaller scale, and only in the town of St-Edwidge.This year it’s designed to be a more regional event and organizers are hoping for a turnout of 10 to 15 thousand people.WELL ACCEPTED So far, the response to the event has been marvellous, says Leblanc.“It’s been well accepted,” he says. The Domaine St.Laurent resort hotel decided to get involved in the festival because it could have important economic benefits for the region, says the hotel’s public relations director, Guy St.Laurent.“The interest is very, very high,” he says.“It’s going to be a great family festival where big, small, young and old can participate.” Besides events of a porcine nature, the festival will feature such attractions as fireworks, visits to the Coaticook gorge, a troutfishing tournament, archery competitions, children’s theatre and lots of kiosks to visit.Fiddler Charlie Landry will put on a show the Friday night, and other musicians such as Maurice Proulx, Luc Paradis and Robert Huberdeau as well as a Bavarian orchestra will perform throughout the weekend. The event will conclude with a presentation of the comedy Waiter!
